The Evans Penalties

I was watching the game in a bar (I live in Denver), so I couldn't hear the audio feed too well; what was the deal with the second unsportsmanlike penalty on Evans late in the game?  It looked to me like he was just arguing vehemently for a pass interference penalty, which it seems to me is the sort of thing that happens on basically every pass play in the NFL.

Did he do something more than that, like use some magic phrase, or was this just a case of an over-sensitive referee?  Granted, it didn't affect the outcome, but the whole thing struck me as pretty unprofessional on the referee's part.  These guys get jawed at and lobbied for penalties all game long, penalty calls shouldn't get personal.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

He's on the Bills
That's why he drew that penalty. I can't imagine what he said is any worse than the hundreds of other things that get said to the refs every game.

I still don't really know what the first penalty was. It looked like he handed the ball to someone on the Steelers...I love that that draws a penalty, but watching the Pats game, Wes Welker spikes the ball after every catch he makes. That was supposed to be a delay of game penalty this year (Shockey got one yesterday for that same thing), but since he's a Pat it gets overlooked.

I noticed that too...
Particularly one time it was incredibly obvious for Welker.  As soon as I saw him do it without a penalty flag, I just went nuts.  Not that the penalty had too much of an effect on the Bills' loss, it's just annoying to see that get called on Buffalo, but not NE.

Penalty reasons
The reasons for the penalties: the first one was interpreted as Evans throwing the ball at a Steeler; Jauron believed his excuse that he was just trying to get it out of his hands to move the offense along, and so do I.

The second was Evans' fault. He wasn't flagged for what he said to the ref, but instead for getting in his face to do so. Getting up in the grill of a ref is about the dumbest thing an NFL player can do - there's no excuse for Evans there.

Talk about a meltdown of team leadership.
