No Defensive 'needs" this year.
Just "Wants".
All the upgrades we need are already on thie defensive side of the ball are on the team....Poz and Ko returning.
Ko-Ferno (My awesome nickname for the Ko Simpson/Donte Whitner tandem) reunites giving us great Safeties with great depth (Wilson/Wendling) and Ko will help Greer out allot.
Can the #2 CB spot stand for upgrade? Yeah it can...but we can do ALLOT worse at that spot....we really are lucky Greer is a very solid player. Add Youboty to the mix and really depth is just needed. I mean depth depth....like K-Tom and J-Baller...er I mean....Butler. Has this CB group hit its potential? No...is there a chance it won't? Yea, there is. But let our investments grow...some times satisfaction isn't instant and we need to commit.....something that is very hard for fans to do, which is understandable, we have not been to the play-offs since I was an 11 year old, and we have not won a play off game since I was 7. Ouch.
Next area is Linebacker. All the controversy stems around John DiGiorgio.
Some fans like him, some don't. The nay-sayers hold their argument by saying he is undersized and being a MLB in a cover-2 inflated his stats. In the NFL there is 31 other starting MLBs (duh) and DiGi was #16 in total tackles (#14 in solo). Of these 15 guys who did better, only 2 were in the 230 pound range (230 give or take a few pounds). 1 tied with DiGi, other just plain beat him, but DiGi did not play a full 16 games at MLB, he only started 12, and still started a few games at OLB for injured Keith Ellison. The player he tied with was Gary Brackett of the Colts, a 232 pound MLB who started every game this year, and the man who beat him was Green Bay's Nick Barnett. These guys got Mr. DiGiorgio in tackles, but DiGi still probably would have took em out in pass breakups, INT's, tackles for loss, and sacks if he started a full 16 games at MLB like they did.
What am I getting at? DiGi is "undersized" for a MLB, yea sure...but not a WLB. Why put your arguably most productive LB on the bench to bring in a kid who may be a step backwards? Makes no since to me, and Jauron is saying the same thing I hope!
Next is the D-Line, in which the only bright spot was (SURPRISE) Aaron Schobel and (SURPRISE...no really) John McCargo. Kelsay and Denney fought injuries this year, Hardgrove got busted for something costing him 4 games so really the only DE teams had to worry about was #94, who still got 70+ tackles, 7 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles. D-Tackle wise Williams and Tripplett are good but far from forces and Mr.(Jason) Jefferson is far from "movin' on up".
The DE's are good...let Denney and Kelsay heal up and let Hardgrove get his parting out of the way now rather than in training camp and these guys will be among the NFL's best again (25+ sacks in 2006).
As for DT's they are light but still did an ok job. They got in the back field and took QBs and RBs down, they were just super inconsistent. When McCargo got in the game we all felt better, but the he needs his "fat friend". Add a McCargo-like guy for the rotation to help sure up the consistency and wa-la, a respectable defense!
How so? To shut down the pass this 'D' calls for either great DBs who can cause coverage sacks or a great DL that can pressure the QB into making mistakes. Both the DL and DBs are good, not great, but looking at them both you just get a feeling that we can have a great D-Line easier than great D-Backfield.
So Poz replaces DiGi, DiGi replaces Ellison and either a stud CB or DT get added and POOF...back to circlin' the wagons!

meh
Personally, I think we need a 1A CB to put across from McGee. Youboty hasnt proven to be that person yet, and Greer isn't a top 2 CB. We also need a WLB not named DiGi. DiGi is a solid depth player, but shouldn't be starting in the NFL. We also need a DT to move Triplett and Williams into true backup roles, and a DE that can blow by somebody.
I would be happy with those four positions filled, and would be comfortable with our current safeties. I would also push players like DiGi, Greer, Ellison, Kelsay, and Williams into their proper positions as solid backups.
Considering we have a lot of picks and FA, it shouldn't be difficult to fill these positions and still pick up a WR and TE to help the offense while also filling depth needs on the o-line.

Team Needs: One Man's Plan
I'd like to see CB addressed in the draft in the hopes of landing a player to compete with Greer and Youboty for playing time next season. Hopefully, you net an upgrade, but if not, I think the team could live with McGee, Greer, and Youboty headlining the CB's.
I rank DE behind DT, OLB, and CB. I think we need a pash rushing specialist and it's possible to land one later in the draft as teams often pass on lighter DE's that aren't considered "complete" players (See Elvis Dumerville).
If Buffalo could land both a starting WR and a starting OLB in free agency, I'd look for a draft that goes something like:
- DT (move into top 5 by giving up a 2 & 5)
- TE
- CB
- DE
- OT
- WR
- G/C
- FB

Defensive needs
I agree with Nick, thats a lot of draft picks, so moving up is a strong possibility. Top five for Dorsey might be pushing it, but if it happens I wont complain one bit.
