Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Troy Williamson

Would anyone be interested in acquiring Minnesota WR Troy Williamson?  I'm sure he could be obtained for very little compensation.  As a former #7 overall selection in the 2005 draft, his size and speed has never been questioned.  However, he clearly has struggled to consistently catch passes thus far in his short career.  He's still young, and I believe that Williamson may still have some serious potential.  Anyone interested?

Another question: is catching a football a talent or a skill?

I think talent is gifts that you are born with.  In football, talent is usually physical gifts.  Size, speed, quickness, and arm strength are good examples of talent.  Conversely, I think skill is something that can be learned with experience.  In football, route running, coverage reads, and pass rush moves are good examples of skill.

If catching a football is a skill, then why not target wide receivers such as Troy Williamson and Devery Henderson as potential acquisitions?

Scenario: if I were scouting a receiver with many positive attributes, but I knew that he dropped a lot of passes, is that okay because pass catching can always be coached up?

Many fans incorrectly assume that just because a player plays the wide receiver position that catching the football is a given.

With all of our discussion regarding YAC, if a receiver cannot catch, then yards-after-catch becomes irrelevant.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Deal or no deal?
I wouldn't be opposed to trading for Troy Williamson.  Sending JP Losman to Minnesota straight up could make a lot of sense for both teams.  Their quarterback situation is one of the least attractive in the league right now and an upgrade would probably be welcomed.  The Bills need weapons, especially ones that are big.

Losman wants out of Buffalo and has made it known publicly.  I don't know if Williamson has expressed similar frustration in his situation, but I'm sure he's not excited about the way that the Vikings seem to be shifting to more of a run first offense.  Plus, he could find himself buried on the depth chart even more in Minnesota if they choose to draft a wide receiver high as many experts seem to be predicting.  Viewing the Bills situation, he might see a little bit more of an opportunity for more playing time and even possibly starting.

Personally, the only problem with this theoretical trade is that the Bills would be bringing in another player that is unproven and has not yet turned his potential into production.  It would be nice if the Bills would acquire a player that you know what you're going to get.  They rely too much on what ifs and maybes.  If the Bills for some reason decided that they wanted Chad Johnson for example, you know that the dude would instantly upgrade the whole passing offense.  Him and Evans would probably catch about 70 balls and have about 1,000 yards each, while the tight ends would see increased production as well.

The Bills would be bringing in another player
The Bills just signed Teyo Johnson, I"m not too keen on bringing in another player who was somebody else's bust. I would rather start over with a draft pick, then try to "rehabilitate" too many guys from the scrapheap.

not interested
don't forget Williamson has a huge contract.  The former seventh overall selection has two years left on his contract and will make almost 10 mil next year.

Even if Minnesota cut Williamson (a very realistic possibility) he is primarily a deep threat that wouldn't satisfy Buffalo's need for a big possesion guy who can go over the middle and be a threat in the red zone.  Williamson's hands (or lack thereof) would also be a liability in the move the chains, timing based west coast offense.

Catching is talent.
If it were just a learned skill, than anyone who could run a 4.4 forty could play WR in the NFL, and we know that's not the case.

Troy Williamson is a bust.  And that's not neccessarily a slight on him.  More than 50% of WRs drafted in the first round are busts.  That's another reason why Buffalo has to be so careful when drafting one this year.  I don't want to see Perry Tuttle's name on the draft board this year.

If you're gonna trade Losman to Minny, then give me Pat back, or Antoine. (insert dream cloud there)

Ocho Stinko?  Forget it.  That act would never fly here.

Perry Tuttle
The worst part about him is that he was drafted #19 overall and Mike Quick, and Mark Duper were still on the board. It sucks when you draft a bust at 19 and a pro-bowler who played the same position went 20.
