Got Questions about the Arizona Cardinals?
Hey Buffalo Rumblings,
Cgolden from Revenge of the Birds here. In an effort to maximize community interaction between ROTB and you guys at Buffalo Rumblings this week, Brian and I have decided to cross-promote by throwing up a FanPost so that you, devout fans of the Bills, can get any and all questions answered about the Arizona Cardinals (and vice versa over at ROTB).
So I'm here to answer your questions - and I expect a few ROTB-ers will migrate over to discuss the upcoming Bills/Cardinals game as well. Want to know what to expect from the high flying Cardinal offense? Wondering if the Cardinal defense is as bad as the unit that allowed half-a-hundred to the Jets? Curious about the Cardinals' injury situation? I may not be the dali-lama but I'll do my best to shoot it to you straight. Anything you got, fire away - I'm here to share and learn. Let's do this up, Buffalo Rumblings.
I'm looking forward to a very close Cardinals/Bills game this weekend. Should be fun.
This FanPost was written by a registered user of Buffalo Rumblings. Its views do not necessarily reflect the reviews of Rumblings' editorial staff, but are just as valued as our own.

hey guys
The run defense is better by far and should be getting even better this week. The defense started the season with the #1 and #2 nose tackles on the sidelines and while the #2 (Alan Branch) has been back for two weeks, our #1 (Gabe Watson) should be back this week. He practiced for the first time since early in the off season last week and if he continues to progress he’ll make his first appearance of the season on Sunday. The units are ranked pretty closely (Rush D 14th – Pass D 16th) but I feel much better when the opposing team hands the ball to a RB.

a little more on the defense
Besides just run and pass, could you give some detail on the two strongest points of your defense (I’m going to guess one is DT based on your response above and on the two weakest points of your defense? Are your corners a problem in pass defense? Outside linebackers suffering? Solid play from your safety tandem? Do the Cards generate pressure from the DEs? Thanks

Dansby and Wilson
These guys play all over the field and seem to be the catalyst for bad things for the opposing offense. Wilson has some hamstring issues which kept him out last week. If he cannot go this week, be thankful as Aaron Francisco can hit but tends to be out of position on deep balls. Not good. If Adrian Wilson can go (I think he will this week considering the indoor venue and a dry field), even at 75%, he can cause havoc on Edwards’ reads.
The corners…well, Roderick Hood has been solid, just not spectacular. Eric Green can be real good but last week he effectively gave up and was burned…repeatedly. He is a weak link at this point. Our back-up CBs are serviceable, with Rogers-Cromartie having some great potential. If Green’s knee is sore still, he could see some increased PT which may be the best thing that could happen this week for the secondary.
The weakest point to the defense is their “smarts”; the defensive line is offsides prone and Darnell Dockett tends to get his jock in a bind and gets all kinds of dumb penalties, usually at critical times. I love to see the guys play spirited ball, just as long as the yellow hankies stay in the refs’ pockets.
Losing Bertrand Berry certainly hurts at the OLB spot. Rotating three players between two spots may not be a “red flag” in my mind, but after last week’s abortion of a football game I have to wonder.
Travis LaBoy has been our best rusher this season followed by Berry. I’ve been disappointed with Antonio Smith’s production so far.
I suspect that Clancy Pendergast is going to shake things up a bit this week on defense. His game plans have been rather bland in performance since Week 1 and after getting the “fiftyburger” put on last week, the defensive look should be more aggressive.

completely agree
Dansby and Wilson are the heart of soul of the D. They are the play makers.
OLB vs. DE – The Cardinals run hybrid 3-4 so the DE’s generate more pass rush than a normal 3-4 but in the same way, the OLB tend to generate less pass rush than your typical 3-4 teams.

Thanks for the in depth answer, much appreciated. What is Darnell Dockett’s deal? Sometimes I hear he is one of the better lineman in the league, sometimes I hear nothing about the guy for months.

Love/Hate Relationship with Dockett
The guy is a great player, don’t get me wrong. He’s just a very…high strung…emotional…charged…player. He tends to overreact to things on the field and thus the penalties. He perceives a dirty player on the O-line and goes and grabs a face mask on the next play. ::shrugs:: I hate to see it but that’s “his game”. He has faded towards the end the of season because he plays so many downs. There’s some decent depth on the D-line now so I’m expecting his numbers to be steady through the year. “Hoping”, as badmatty53 states below.
I think Bills fans can empathize somewhat with that clinging to hope; both our teams seem to be ready to make the move towards the post-season. This week’s game should be a good scale to judge that progress against.

Offense
Is the Cardinals offense as explosive as it seems? Based off of Buffalo’s past games this season, would you think they could keep the Cards “O” in check?
Also, how does their special teams look?
Thanks

Cards O
To be honest, the only time I’ve seen the Bills play this season was the preseason game against the Steelers so my knowledge of the defense is pretty very limited. With that being said, I don’t think there’s a secondary in this league that can contain the passing game when they’re playing their game. If Warner has time in the pocket, he’s capable of picking apart any defense, especially if the D is missing a couple of corners (did I hear correctly that the Bills have injury issues in the secondary?). On the other hand if he’s pressured and knocked around he’s just as likely to complete a high percentage of his passes to the opposing team.
As far as explosive:
Are they able to score from anywhere on the field? – Yes
Are they capable of scoring the most points in the league on an given Sunday? – Yes
Are they also capable of imploding and having to play catchup for most of the game? – Yes
As for special teams, Ken Whisenhunt is currently petitioning the league to abolish the kicking game. Well maybe not, but he should. Neil Rackers is one of the worst FG kickers in the league and most fans aren’t even comfortable when he lines up for an extra point. He’s great at onside kicks and squib kickoffs but that’s the extent of his skills. Dirk Johnson is the new punter and he’s been pretty good this year but we’re just waiting for him to revert to his career averages. Steve Breaston is a good punt returner but average to slightly below average kick returner.

Don't worry about our secondary
You’re going learn this name came Sunday: Ashton Youboty
Hopefully, for us you loathe it, but I expect him to make plays. He has come a long way from being a skinny kid from Ohio State picked in the 3rd round

That being said
I would still rather have Mcgee starting. He’s is definetely our most proven corner and it seemed he was in store for a good year after those 2 picks in the first two games. Our depth at the position is definetely grade A and I agree that youboty will come read to play.

Even if he’s not in there, they still have Fitzgerald, Breaston (all he did last week was rack-up 324 total yards) and even Urban looked pretty good. If Boldin isn’t in there it hurts, but not that bad.

i think it hurts more than you may think
With Boldin in the Cards have two major mismatches if Terrence McGee doesnt go. Jabari Greer will play Fitz tough at least, as he does everybody, but Youboty on Boldin? forget about it, and McKelvin on Breaston?, forget about it. With Boldin out it puts Youboty on Breaston, a battle I think either can win, but Youboty will play him tough and competitive and it puts McKelvin on some more even leveled coverage.
Boldin out or in I think is a huge game-changer

This team is an enigma to me
After week 2 everyone was giving the Cards the NFC west, of course those first 2 wins were over the 49ers and the fish. Then after a tough road loss to the Skins, they get blown-out by the Jets. Is this team a legit division winner or not?

enigma
They’re probably an enigma to themselves as well. I will say that they’ve always struggled on the road and most NFC West teams struggle on road trips to the East Coast (although I have no stats to back that up).
As far as division winner: In the NFC Worst, why not? In any other division, probably not.

Hightower/James
Why does Hightower (and last year, Shipp) get the carries in the goal – situation and not James? I would have thought it would have been the other way around.

RBs
Edge has never been used around the goal line much since he came to AZ. Whether they think that he’s not suited for it or because they don’t want him to endure the punishment, I don’t know. My guess would be that they run the dog out of him the rest of the game so they try and spare him the beating of goal line carries.
Hightower is a promising rookie that was almost instantly a fan favorite in AZ. He’s very much like Edge but he runs tougher and has the burst that Edge has lost with age. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were splitting carries 50/50 by seasons end.

Hightower's burst
It’s been so long since I’ve seen a decisive burst towards the line of scrimmage coming from a RB in a Cardinals’ uniform. Thomas Jones’ maybe? Hightower gets the nod now because of that burst of speed he has, hitting the holes when defenders are still making their moves against the blockers. Shipp used to get the nod because he could bowl folks over. Arrington used to get chances but tends to do the four-step tango. Edge still get’s some chances but only when the defense seems to be expecting him to flare out as a receiver; Warner sees that and calls the run and Edge will get his scores (two last week).

This Cardins team is an enigma to me as well
Yes, as a devout fan I can honestly say that in the last two weeks I have gone from a man with exaggerated expectations to one with an uneasy felling settling in the pit of my stomach.
It seems to me that the team has all of the tools to be great but haven’t found a way to put all of the pieces together yet. At times they seem to work like a well oiled machine, one piece of the puzzle picking up where the last left off. Then you have the other extreme side of the spectrum where in they seem like a discombobulated group of special olympics kids running around in circles and bumping into each other.
As for this Sunday I can only hope to see the a well oiled machine. HOPE being the operative word in that sentence.

Injuries and other questions
That Boldin hit was ugly, but any idea what his status might be? I can’t imagine he’d play, or the team would allow him to play after being knocked completely out. That’s not something to get cute with. Have you heard anything yet?
Will Eric Green be playing? I watched a lot of your game against the Jets and I saw him crumble to the turf on a long Coles TD holding his knee. Is he going to play???
How does Rodgers-Cromartie look? Many Bills fans thought he’d be the #1 CB on our draft list heading into the draft, but we had Leodis McKelvin ranked there instead. Does he start????
Did Warner hurt his hand against the Jets? I thought I saw that somewhere and that’s part of the reason for all the turnovers, along with the lack of blocking…
Speaking of blocking, is your OL good, bad, average, etc in pass protection???

Q – should get an update today.
Green – came back into the game. He’s fine although fans may wish that he was hurt
DRC – they’re taking it slow with him but he’ll probably take over for Green before years end. I can say he’s more physical than I thought he would be.
Warner – He did ding his hand early in the game but it’s awful hard to blame the turnovers on that considering that most of turnovers came in the 2nd quarter and then he had an amazing second half.
OL – I’d say they’re OK in pass protection. They’re vulnerable on the right side where Deuce Lutui has been in danger of being benched and Levi Brown got absolutely abused last week.

Welcome to Buffalo Rumblings cgolden!
Are you all happy with Ken Whisenhunt? The Bills once had an ex-Steelers offensive coordinator as a head coach and it was an unmittagated disaster. How are things for you?
The new stadium is pretty nice, I haven’t really looked so I’ll ask: Do the Cards play better at home or on the road? Is the difference severe or hardly noticeable?

Whiz – You’ll get a mixed result on Whiz depending on who you ask. I’m personally a huge fan and my only complaint would be that he doesn’t always play to his strengths. At times he tries to run the ball like he did in PIT, even though this team is built to throw the ball.
The Cards are a different team at home. This is only one year but they were 6-2 at home last year (w/ wins over PIT, CLE and SEA), but a miserable 2-6 on the road.

Hello cgolden
I’ve only recently jumped on the Bills bandwagon so I’ve got a lot of suffering to catch up on, but I’m also a Seahawks fan so I watch with interest every year as the Cardinals are picked as a dark horse contender and upset canidate in the division only to fall short.
My question is this; is the general consensus amongst Cardinal fans that Matt Leinart is a bust or just a slow learner? Is he going to get a shot this year? Basically I was expecting to see him under center and was shocked when Warner ended up there.

Leinart
I honestly don’t know how to answer that question b/c I think Cardinals fans are split down the middle on Leinart (as you can tell by badmatty’s comment). Most wouldn’t call him a bust (I happen to agree), but there are some who’ve written him off and think he should be cut after the season. I do think that he’ll get his shot at starting again, although it’ll only happen if Warner goes down or has a couple more games like last week. I know most fans outside of AZ don’t give Warner much respect but it’s worth remembering that he threw for 3,400 yards and 27 touchdowns in only 11 starts last season. He is a dangerous quarterback when given time in the pocket.

Leinart will get his chance
Warner is anything but Mr. Ironman…but neither is Leinart. Matty will get some PT this year. Honestly I’m surprised he didn’t play the second half last week.
First Round QBs tend to have a different scale of criticism when it’s time to consider them as “busts”. I don’t think Leinart has really had an opportunity to prove his critics wrong or right. He has talent, there’s no doubt.
I suspect that his chance will come next year IF Warner doesn’t get the Cardinals into the post-season this year. Warner is in the last year of his contract and if he cannot get the team over the hump, I don’t see management giving him another year to try with the money invested in Leinart already.

It’s a combination of the two. He’s no where near the back that he was 5 or 6 years ago but the OL hasn’t helped him out a great deal either. In my mind, he’s one of the best backs in the league at turning a 1 yard gain into a 3 yard gain but he’s also the best at turning a 20 or 40 yard gain into a 10 or 12 yard run.

Thanks to the ROTB fellows for posting here.
My question, is with regard to the point spread. I saw it it at Zona minus 1.5 at the beginning of the week, but has since moved to pick ’em. That means more money has been put on the Bills than Zona thus far. Now, granted, the old maxim is that the home team gets 3 points. But is it a fair thing to say a 4-0 team is better by more than three points than a 2-2 team coming off of a horrendous loss?
So, to the question, if one of you guys were the oddsmakers, what would you set the line at? Personally, I’d go with Buffalo minus 2 to 2.5.

Don't be surprised...
Remember, the oddsmakers just set the line. The line moved because more money has been placed on Buffalo so far. Think about it; the Bills have gotten their share of national publicity lately. While that’s not enough to sway the thinking of a die hard gambler, it is enough to sway some of the general public who bets.
I share an entry in a suicide pool (country wide, not just an erie county thing) with a friend of mine. When we saw the picks for the last two weeks, we laughed. Buffalo had been picked a lot over both the Raiders and the Rams. Now, if some of you don’t understabd how that pool works, it’s easy – you pick a team each week, and if you win, you move on. You can never pick the same team twice. We’ve been in the same pool for several years now. We couldn’t recall anyone but ourselves who actually had the gumption to pick Buffalo the last few seasons for a game. As of now, just about every entrant in the pool has used them up for the year..
