Cardinals' Wilson fined for hit on Edwards
Surprisingly (or maybe not so much) Ardian Wilson was fined 25K for his hit that knocked Trent Edwards out last weekend in Arizona. The NFL said that he was being fined, not for a helmet to helmet hit, but instead for throwing his entire body weight on top of Edward's as he fell to the ground. The link to the ESPN story is below:

Justified
based on way he hit Edwards. He didn’t appear to try to avoid the train-wreck collision with Trent, or soften it in any way. It was like he was trying to take Trent out of the game with that hit. Besides, I’m sure he can afford the $25k…

It’s football. Wilson is paid to hit other people as hard as he can. He didn’t do it maliciously, but he’s had similar run-ins in the past. I expected a fine, and he got it. It’s a little steeper than I thought it would be, but that’s due to his repeat offender status. This is about right.

Yeah
Wilson is paid to hit other players as hard as he can, but he happened to hit one of the league’s up-and-coming playmakers at the QB position. The league office is not going to be happy when someone of that caliber (at least on the offensive side of the ball) is taken out – the NFL wants to see scoring go up, not down.
We can’t know what Wilson was thinking on that particular play, but it kinda looked intentional, IMO. He didn’t have to hit Edwards that high, but he did.

Trent could have been David Carr there and it would not have mattered. The league was fining Wilson regardless of who he hit. If the guy being hit mattered, Bernard Pollard would be banned from the NFL.

…And Peter King would cry himself to sleep every night…oh wait that does happen.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Injury
One other note: If Trent isn’t knocked out of the game Wilson doesn’t get fined. Kawika Mitchell busted open Kurt Warner’s chin but no fine for him. If Kurt Warner gets knocked out you bet there is a fine, too. The simple fact remains that is Trent spring up I don’t think Wilson gets fined.

Well Deserved
I was most upset by the way he kept the fore of his helmet engaged the entire time. I was pissed the announcers didn’t focus on that aspect because it ended up dislodging Trent’s helmet. IMO he was trying to hurt him. I get that it’s football, but the ball was gone and he knew it.
