Bills possibly in on Tony Gonzalez
According to Chris Brown, at Buffalo Bills.com, the Bills are one of a few team possibly in on getting Tony Gonzalez before the trade deadline. The information was obtained from ESPNews on TV so there is no link as of yet to their story.

I have lobbied for the Bills to trade for Gonzalez for a little while because I think he could be a huge asset. This team has a boatload of potential but a few positions are still holding us back and TE is one of them. Gonzalez is a high class guy like the Bills want to build the team with. He would be a great leader in the clubhouse and on the field would be an excellent option for the young but developing Trent Edwards.
The story suggests the Chiefs want a first round pick plus something else which is outrageous. T.O. was traded for a second as was Daunte Culpepper a few years ago. Randy Moss was had for a fourth. We only got two thirds for Willis McGahee. No way does Gonzalez go for a first but if the price comes down to a third and possibly a pick next year, I think it should be done. Also I do not believe J.P. should be part of any deal. He may not be very good but he is our best option right now if Trent can't go.

So Brian, would you like a big heaping plate of crew my boy?????
I said we should go for him, at the least kick the tires of a deal, and what do we have here? Brownie saying we might make a play for him, so I think a plate of crow may be in oncoming buddy.
Anyhow, as for Rabid, I do think we can surrender a 3rd for him and maybe a 4th or 5th next season to sweeten the deal. If we can get him, and he agrees to play out his full contract, that would allow us to concentrate in the next draft on a pass rushing DE and a C to replace Fowler, those would be good times friends.

How do you eat crew?
Are we talking cannibalism here? Does he have to eat the boat and oars, or just the guys who row? Can he go Hannibal Lecter and just pick and chose certain parts, or does he have to consume all bodies completly?
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Please don't eat the crew, Brian
I only recently signed on and certainly not for that…

I would only be willing to have him consume the Coxswain
They’re small and replaceable, the rowers themselves are too tough to train. As for the boat itself, it was still made of wood, I would have him do so, as it is a good source of fiber, and we all could use more fiber. But since its fiberglass, that would be a bad idea, I may be a vengeful person, but not unecessarly cruel!

A rumor is a rumor for a reason, WA. You saw what the Chiefs wanted. The chances of anything happening are remote.

Oh, and I forgot… if the Bills miraculously did end up making a trade for Tony Gonzalez, I don’t think I’d mind “eating crow”. Or “crew”, for that matter. I think he’d be a huge asset for this team. But don’t mistake this report as an indication as something is imminent; it’s not.

We'll see, as long as Peterson stays the GM they can unload Tony and Herm won't anywhere
It is all dependent on the owner now. If he tells Peterson and Herm they get another 2 years to turn it around, Tony is gone for a 2nd or 3rd. If he tells them they need to win now, he stays. It is a pretty simple piece of math. And I would love to have Tony for three years from the Chefs as K noted.

Also, please realize that the two other teams that have been mentioned at this point are the Giants and Eagles. Both have quarterbacks that have taken their teams to a Super Bowl; Manning has won it all. If I’m Gonzalez, I’m pulling for a trade to either of those teams before Buffalo. If I’m the Chiefs, I’m working my hardest to get Tony out of the conference, if I’m trading him at all.

The NFL Draft is about so much more than plugging holes, WA. There are a ton of other items we need to address in next year’s draft that nobody talks about (I’ll leave TE, DE and C off of the list, since you basically mentioned them):
- QB (a guy to develop alongside/behind Hamdan, an eventual Hamdan replacement)
- O-Line (we need depth BAD. Preston, Whittle and Chambers are all free agents after the season, and none of them are locks to be brought back)
- DT (McCargo might be out, Stroud’s getting older, and you can never have enough athletic bigs)
- LB (Crowell’s gone, and though I like Keith Ellison a lot more than y’all do, I think he’s better as a reserve)
- CB (Greer’s going to be a FA, and numbers there are always an issue)
All NFL teams, no matter how good they are, have needs, specifically when it comes to depth. The Bills will be facing some serious depth issues both as this year wears on and next off-season. The Bills have 19 players in the final year of their deals; only 7 of them are Exclusive Rights or Restricted. I’d hate to see them throw multiple picks away for a short-term player like Gonzalez; one I could handle.

Yes, but we need starters at C and potentially DE and TE more than a backup Guard or backup CB, etc… OLB starter is needed too….
We obviously need depth, but we need some starters at those positions ahead of some depth, IMO….
If we traded a 3rd for Gonzo, wouldn’t that kill our need for a starting TE for the next 3 or so years? I wouldn’t call that a short-term player, just not a really long-term player. Plus, he’s able to help us immediately instead of hoping for some production down the line like a rook…
I’m not someone who ever wants us to trade draft picks, especially for a 32 year old, BUT to get a starting TE who’s under contract for the next 3 or 4 years, and is as good as he is still, makes a ton of sense for us….especially if it’s for a 3rd rounder or less….

Clearly. But the original argument was that a 3rd, and a 4th or 5th to “sweeten the deal”, was worth it. That’s what I was disagreeing with. I’m fine with trading a single draft pick to get Gonzalez; more than that is a bad idea.

Those 4th or a 5th picks would be for the 2010 draft
I was thinking the 3rd this season the 2009 draft included, with the 4th or 5th coming from the upcoming 2010 season + draft. Sorry I didn’t make it clearer in my post, my bad,

A 1st rounder is WAAAAAAAAY too steep of a price. The Chefs aren’t going to get that from anyone. A 2nd rounder is probably what they can get for him. If the Bills feel that Gonzo for the next 3 or so years is better than any 2nd round pick from this upcoming draft, I’d say go for it. I do hate giving up high draft picks though….
His contract is a little high as well, but cutting Royal in the offseason could help with that.

Apparently
the Chiefs only want a 3rd rounder….
I would be all over that then. Heck, if the Giants are only offering a 6th, we should be offering a 4th or 5th to get discussions started. If a 3rd or less is all it takes to get Gonzo, I’d almost bend over backwards to get it done. He could really help this team…

Well, since we don’t have anyone on the side of the Losman idea, I’ll take up that position. I’d definitely throw in Losman, knowing it’s a gamble if Edwards get hurt again. We have very little time to get something of value for JP, and if we can use him to beat out the other teams to get Tony Gonzalez, great! I mean, we have to at least consider it, don’t we?
Don’t get me wrong, Gonzalez isn’t going to light anybody up, but he will open things up in a MASSIVE way for Buffalo’s offense. Just imagine what Trent, Evans, Lynch, Roscoe, and the rest could do with a legit TE weapon in the passing game!

NOBODY WANTS LOSMAN
in a trade. He’s a FA at year end, so what is some team going to gain by trading for a backup QB? Plus, how is he any different than Brodie Croyle in KC? Both stink

Huh?
If he’s that bad, then why do we have that much interest to avoid trading him?
I think it’s safe to say that Losman is clearly better than Brodie Croyle in every aspect of the game. JP has a much better deep ball, scrambling ability, more experience reading defenses, more time in the league, and better durability. Brodie Croyle can’t stay healthy or throw for a 50% completion percentage if his life depended on it.
JP Losman will never be a Manning, but he isn’t Croyle or Jamarcus Russell either. With the right co-ordinator and a change of scenery, it’s easy to picture him as a solid, more consistent starter. And remember that some inconsistent play is the hallmark of pretty much every QB in the league at some point in the season. There are 3 or 4 elite QBs who seem to always pull things together — but the rest of the pack goes through seven-sack, sub-50% completion days throughout the season. Life in the NFL.
As far as no one wanting Losman, frankly KC has a liability at QB right now. They are looking to deal Gonzalez to draft a QB most likely. If we can include JP in a package with a low draft pick (3-5) I think the Chiefs have to take it.

Because he knows the system and the coaches. And the free agents at QB this past off-season were garbage. And he works well with Evans. Need I go on?
K’s point was that nobody would knowingly trade for J.P. Losman right now when he’s scheduled to hit UFA next off-season. It’s the same reason that no one will trade for T.J. Houshmandzadeh. I guarantee you, also, that very few Chiefs fans share your opinions on the Losman/Croyle comparison. There’s literally a 0% chance that Losman is worked into any deal for Tony Gonzalez.
Bottom line is this: Losman has 11 more games in a Bills uniform, then it’s bon voyage. No more, no less.

afterthought logic
Keeping Losman, I guess is the safe move. But we might have a chance to be a Top 5 offense if we can get this guy, and that’s what’s going to be needed to get us places!
