I had planned on posting about the Tony Gonzalez-to-Buffalo rumors this afternoon; then I was contacted by Arrowhead Pride about that very topic.

So, rather than write the same things twice, I invite you to visit AP for the full interview, then drop by back here to discuss this scintillating rumor.

Thanks, Brian

Over at AP we’re slowly coming to the realization that it would be okay to trade Tony if we get the right price.

As of now, it appears a 3rd rounder would do it which would be an excellent move for the Bills IMO. TG catches everything, hasn’t declined and would be a great security blanket for a young QB like Trent Edwards.

If TG can be had for a 3rd round pick

I think the Bills would take it. Buffalo’s 3rd round pick should be higher than the Giants’ 3rd, so KC would get slightly better value if Gonzo comes here.

Get the Bills back to the big game!

If the Bills can make this trade, it would be the icing on the playoff cake. I have been a TG fan for a long time, and have seen him rip up teams in the redzone, and the Bills are included. He’s a team player and a good character guy who would fit in great. I’m not sure if we get him though, because the Bills never seem to nab a player like this. But we’ll see…

The Bills CAN win every game

From what I've heard

He wants to go to New York. They’re more likely to make a run than the Bills it would seem at this point.

Plus, TG is very visible around the league and the media….If you’re looking for exposure and a life after football then NY trumps Buffalo there.

I thought I read that the Giants weren't really interested in him

They did, after all, win the Super Bowl without their stud TE last season.

I can see why Gonzo would prefer a big market, though. The Giants are pretty certain to make the playoffs this year so that would be another plus. However, the NFC has suddenly become much more competitive than the AFC meaning Gonzo’s best shot at playing in the big game may come with an AFC team on the rise….like Buffalo.

wow...

have your head buried in books and look what you miss!!

TG in Buffalo would be awesome. The way Trent plays, he would almost immediately be his go to guy. Gonzales would do wonders for that offense. It would provide the threat they need opposite Lee. Reed and Roscoe have been doing good, but it’s obvious that Hardy is going to take a while to develop (beyond just this year).

A pass catching TE was a top priority last off-season and one of the few that we didn’t take care of. Getting Gonzales would fill that hole big time. When was the last time a Bills receiver had anywhere near 99 receptions?

Not getting too excited though. NY does seem like the more likely scenario and where Gonzales would probably be more likely to want to go. Buffalo is a good fit for him though… we’ll see!

Exciting like the off-season!

I think I speak for most Bills fans...

This is one of the most exciting trade rumor for the Bills in a heck of a long time. There is no real downside for us.. Gonzo is still at the top of his game and would really help us get to the promised land, huge upgrade over what we already have. It would also give us the opportunity to groom a young TE for 2-3 y down the road with the best who has ever played the position.

Imagine this… Gonzo has been the #1 target in KC for years now and still remains and still manages to break all TE records. With Evans/Reed/Parrish & Lynch/Jackson taking a lot of the pressure off – he could be even better!

3rd + 6th rounder would be a very acceptable price to pay.
Or a 4rth while throwing in a WR like say Jenkins or maybe even Josh Reed. I think Steve Johnson hasn’t made the field yet because he is only a rookie but with a guy like Gonzo, we could work him into the Slot and he looked really good in PreSeason. Kansas is rebuilding so getting a young guy like Jenkins would be good for them

Gonzo is still at the top of his game…

I’m not sure that is entirely true, but you are correct when you say that he is still better then anything the Bills currently have at TE.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Yeah, he's at the top of his game still

He had arguably the 2nd best season of his career last year with Damon Huard and Brodie Croyle throwing to him. And Larry Johnson on the bench for half the season.

99 rec, 1172 yards…those are WR numbers. Not to mention he’s a solid blocker as well.

He’s towards the end of his career, and is no longer the best TE in the game, that tittle belongs to Jason Witten. He’s very good, the all time leading pass catching TE in fact. but if he was still as on top of his game as you say, why would the Chiefs trade him?

Maybe they're starting to realize

that trading Jared Allen last offseason wasn’t such a good idea?

No

The Chiefs got good value for Allen. Do we want him? Well, yeah, but we’re just as happy that we got a starting LT outta the deal.

by Joel Thorman on Oct 13, 2008 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, he is towards the end of his career

TG had more receptions and more yards than Witten last year. That was Witten’s career best in each, but it wasn’t for Tony.

If you look at his numbers they’ve been very consistent the past decade with guys like Bono, Grbac, Huard and Croyle throwing to him.

I would rather have TG over Witten next year but if we’re talking multiple years then it’s definitely Witten because he is 6 years younger.

The Bills would be trading for the TG of 2008 not the TG of 2007. The TG of 2008 is not the #1 TE in the league IMO. Don’t get me wrong though, I would take him in a heartbeat.
