John McCargo Traded

As per the Bills text alerts, John McCargo has been traded to the Indianapolis Colts for an undisclosed draft pick.

Always good to get more draft choices, though I kind of liked McCargo. At least he will finally get a chance to fulfill his potential in Indianapolis. Mere speculation on my part here, but I think it would be a 5th or 6th round draft pick at the highest. I almost want to think that it could be a 4th, but that seems a little high for just McCargo. Hopefully more information on the trade will come to light in the next 24 hours.

It might be a 4th or 3rd choice if the Bills slapped a bunch of escalators on it

Which they may have done to allow one of our rotation guys go. I wouldn’t be surprised if the escalators included things like playing time, how well the Colts do (playoffs, AFC championship, Superbowl). Since the Colts were so desperate, and we had someone we could give up (I guess) this may be for a bit more than a 5th, but we’ll have to wait to find out :-(

It had better be for a pick higher than what you suggest....

My guess is that it’s a third at minimun. I’m hoping it’s a two, plus some change. I’d fall off of the proverbial rocker if it was a first.

I liked the potential McCargo had. I thought he played better toward the end of last season. Unfortunately, he hasn’t shown much this year, and the organization seems to have frowned upon him some.

This now begs the question of who is available FA wise. Certainly, the Bills need to add another player. I don’t think it’s smart to run with three DTs for the rest of the season.

Is Corey Mace the practice squad guy I’m thinking about?

by krytime on Oct 14, 2008 5:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mace is on the PS, and Rod Coleman is still out there

He isn’t what he used to be, but he would be an OK 4th DT in a rotation and used on obvious running downs.

I’d love to add Coleman. Good pass rushing threat, could be a nice situational DT for us. Please say no to Mace. That guy stinks…

I’m in better shape then he is

Thats good, I just got off the phone with Geronimo and he says that the Bills are calling you in for a try out.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Who? Coleman?

Are you his trainer?

I think if it was obvious, it could have been fixed and he would still be here. I wish I could tell you, he had plenty of chances. He was beat out for the starting spot his rookie year by a 5th rounder, and has never really been the player we all thought he was. He showed plenty of flashes, (see Giants game last year) but never could produce consistently.

He can penetrate with the best of them when he is on

I think the issue with him is desire. He only seems to turn it on the field only occassionaly. He has the physical tools to be unstoppable, but he seems to lack focus and a consistent mean streak. When he does get his considerable skills headed one way with a will to make a play he is hard to stop.

I think he just doesn’t have that killer instinct needed by all good DTs to do their job and get it done, thus why someone like Kyle Williams who is less physically gifted than John could beat him out of the job because that kid never takes a play off and has a nasty mindset on the field.

That's a great question...

And unfortunately, I don’t think we have the answer…

He showed flashes of brilliance, but they were few and far between. He definitely has the size and speed. For some reason, he just didn’t play well here. I think you guys got a good deal here; DTs with any talent are at a premium.

McCargo Trade

Ultimately, I think this is a good move by the Bills. We were able to move a player that wasn’t really contributing to our on-field product for a draft choice (always a valuable commodity). Hopefully it’s at least a 3rd. I’d feel bad giving up a guy we moved up, back into the 1st rd to get, which cost us extra picks, for anything less. But I guess I’d grudgingly accept a 4th.
The best thing this does for us, IMHO, is it allows us to further address our need for more QB pressure. It opens up an “active” spot on our gameday roster which will, hopefully, be filled by Chris Ellis – 2008 3rd rd pick out of Virg. Tech and supposed pass rushing specialist. He’s had 1/2 a season to get his bearings and maybe the staff has deemed him worthy enough to finally see the field. I sure hope so. I’d like to see him get some quality playing time ( and maybe chip Phil River’s tooth)

Get ready to grudge. It was a fourth.

DT Depth?

Something I’ve been noticing around the league is that DL depth is CRUCIAL (see the Giants). What happens if we lose one of our other DTs? I really hope that pick is escalated to a 3rd because I think having him here for depth is more important than a 4th rounder. There must have been something pretty wrong for the Bills to give up on a 3rd year player like that, basically admitting they were wrong on one of their 1st rounders. It’s a shame Kyle Williams doesn’t play in John McCargo’s body. The thing is the Colts are going to give McCargo a lot of playing time, and that may have been all he needed to improve his game. We’ll see. That would be awesome if Chris Ellis gets activated now.

How would Chris Ellis fill the void at DT?

Copeland Bryan has beat out Ellis so far at DE. How would a 265 pounder help at DT? He can’t even be trusted enough to get on the field for STs. Chris Ellis is not the answer for now..

by krytime on Oct 14, 2008 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?

When did I say he was the answer at DT? There’s possibly a spot for Chris Ellis to see the field now is all I was implying… even still… if Ellis were ready to be activated I think he push off Bryan for a roster spot…. so it will be interesting if the Bills will even carry a 4th tackle. But seriously, how did you come up with that?

FA, you kind of transitioned straight into the Ellis thought from your thoughts on DT depth. I read it as you suggesting that Ellis could fill in at DT as well, but realize now it was a separate thought completely.

It’s a shame Kyle Williams doesn’t play in John McCargo’s body.

McCargo, on the roster, is listed as 1 inch taller and 1 pound heavier than Kyle Williams. And after seeing both in person at training camp, McCargo is the kind of fat guy where his legs bow out and he is not that athletic. If you’ve ever played football, he looks the kind of player that was always last when you ran laps and to boot, never had the athleticism to make an impact consistently. KW is like a rock with athleticism, and of course he’s fat, but it’s just different. Either way, one is gone, one stayed, and 5th round or late 1st, besides the money, i don’t care where the good players come from as long as they’re good.

The Bills CAN win every game

I've...

never seen McCargo in peerson… but I’ve seen him blow up some plays… and the common wisdom was that he was an above average athlete. The funny thing about Kyle Williams is that I was absolutely shocked he fell to the 5th because I watched him absolutely tear the SEC up his junior and senior seasons at LSU (much to the chagrin of my Gators)… and I was more excited when we picked him up than when we traded up for McCargo.

I wonder if anyone was excited about trading up for McCargo? I know I wasn’t because I hate trading draft picks to move up in the draft for questionable players….

For the record...

As much as I’m bashing the Bills for making this trade (seemingly sticking up for McCargo), I hated that trade to move up more than anything. I’ll say it again now, and at the pre draft discussions, and forever more. You build a successful team when you accumulate picks in the 2nd to 4th rounds, and of course, draft successfully. After the top 20 of the first round, yoiu don’t have to worry about cap hits going forward…..

Exactly

and why I wasn’t too thrilled about the Poz trade either (yeah, I know, what blasphemy).

I'll eat crow on that one too...

I hate giving up to move up. I would love to see the overall stat for the last ten years if this is a move that actually pays off in the long run…

by krytime on Oct 14, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still think it was a bad move….

We couldn’t have gotten the same play from a guy like David Harris from our original 2nd rounder and then used the 3rd rounder to bring in another young talent??? Poz hasn’t been an impact player and looks to be nothing more than a good, solid LB. I like the guy, but I would probably prefer a guy like Harris and that 3rd rounder back….

Ah well, at least Poz is a starter and should be for a while….

Methinks that if the Bills needed depth inside, Ryan Denney could fill the void nicely, particularly on passing downs.
