So much for that fourth rounder: McCargo trade voided

PFT reporting, ESPN confirming...

A league source tells us that defensive tackle John McCargo has failed his physical in Indianapolis, voiding the trade that sent the 2006 first-rounder from the Bills to the Colts for a fourth-round pick and a half-eaten Kit Kat.

Per the source, McCargo has a bad disk in his back.

So now McCargo is returning to the Bills, where (if they keep him) he’ll have to play for a position coach who has called him out publicly.

“It’s like we’ve said from Day One, you’ve got to really want to play,” Bill Kollar told the Buffalo News. “It’s real easy to go and talk about it.  But what you have to do is work and get better on the practice field and take it into the game.

“He’s got the ability.  But deep inside yourself you’ve got to want to end up getting it done.  You’ve got to end up doing it on the field.”

McCargo won’t be doing it on the field for the Colts.  Whether he ever does it on the field for the Bills or anyone else remains to be seen.

Editor's note, by Brian Galliford: Wow.  Didn't see this one coming.  My guess is that with everything that's transpired - i.e., a trade, a failed physical, public comments about McCargo, and a bad disk in his back - McCargo will hastily be placed on IR.  I highly doubt he plays for the Bills again, at least not this season.

This is a big deal, because let's face it - the Bills ripped the Colts clean on this deal.  Now that deal is out the window.  The Colts remain screwed at defensive tackle, and the Bills have a lame duck on the roster - again, at least for now.  One word to describe this situation: bummer.

OK, time for an attempt at a positive spin

Maybe his bad back is the reason for his lack luster play. Tell him to get his back fixed and see if he can improve his play, most likely next season. If all he needs is a bad attitude, I would be happy to kick him in the groin before the start of each game!

I think the bad attitude is what did him in in the first place, Joe.

I think he goes straight to IR, and he’s essentially a lame duck entering next season, if he’s not cut outright.

Ah. Well then, yes, your tactic may be efficient. :)

by Brian Galliford on Oct 15, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is he eligible for the PUP list?

I’m not sure how that works at all. If not, I agree with BG – he’s headed straight for the IR.

I’d like to hope Joe P is right here (bad back/lackluster play). I could even envision a scenario where this serves as a wake up call to him. But I tend to think that’s wishful thinking….

I knew he had the rep for not being a hard worker. I thought that could be changed with a birthday or two passing by. Where did I not see the “bad attitude” coming from? I never heard bad things about him. But judging from comments out of OBD, they weren’t exactly tearful about parting ways with him. If anything, their silence spoke volumes…

I can’t imagine getting anything of value for him now going forward. And without trying to pick on old scabs, I still wonder what the Bills may have gotten in a package deal for Crowell & McCargo on the day before the draft.

In order for a player to be eligible for PUP, the injury must be non-football-caused or occurring prior to the start of training camp. So no PUP for McCargo.

Thanks for clearing that up.

So, it really is IR for him then, right?

by krytime on Oct 15, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s just my speculation, but I think the chances of him going are very high.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 15, 2008 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes me wonder if the Bills knew about the injury and tried to sneak it past the Colts, non-award winning doctors, or if they really had no idea about it.

Maybe Kollar’s quote will give him a kick in the pants.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

It's hard to tell if the Colts medical staff sucks

or if the team has just been dishonest about the extent of a few player injuries.

I won’t be nominating them for Trainers of the year, but most of the injuries come to all the undersized defenders who get pounded and dish out poundings through the season. Not a ton the staff can do to prevent that.

Don't think the Bills would do that.

The Lions offered Kitna to the whole league, knowing full well he was going on IR if he wasn’t traded. That’s kind of a d*****bag move. one I wouldn’t expect this regime to pull. They might make mistakes, but I don’t think they do things like that. My guess is they didn’t know he couldn’t pass a physical, and shame on their staff if that’s the case….

[Here’s something I want to bring up for another time – I don’t think the Bills training/medical staff is all that good. There are too many inujuries over the last few years. They get a pass though because of Kevin E. A lot (most) of that credit doesn’t belong to the Bills’s staff on that one. Thank the local hospitals, and their doctors]

What I think happened

is that the disk in his back herniated as soon as he was traded. Bad things happen to Colts NTs. Corey Simon, Anthony McFarland, Quinn Pitcock, Ed Johnson, now you can add McCargo to the list. Soon NTs will suddenly get injured, arrested or quit in the college ranks as soon as a Colts scout lays eyes on them.

Colts and Bills fans are both depressed

One teams’ fat load is another teams’ best DT.

As a Colt fan, I’m very frustrated. The Colts DT’s are simply pathetic, and honestly that is the type of thing that ultimately prevents a Super Bowl. And I know you guys are a bit upset, since he has no use to you, and a 4th pick isn’t bad.

Pathetic?

The Colts have 3 very good guys to play the undertackle/3 technique. They just don’t have anyone of a decent size to play the NT/overtackle.

Come on Shake, let's be realistic

Raheem Brock = Ok but needs a big guy
Keyunta Dawson = Mediocre
Eric Foster = Mediocre
LaJaun Ramsey = Mediocre (I wonder if we re-sign him now)
Darrell Reid = Special Teams Ace, not much at DT
Daniel Muir = It’d be nice to actually see him play. I don’t give guys like him anything until they prove it

The defense will continue to struggle with these DTs. I wouldn’t be shocked in the least if this is the Colts downfall.

ouch

If the Bills knew about this injury and tried pawning him off on another team, that is just sheisty business. The Lions were getting ripped for trying to trade an injured Kitna, imagine what will be said of the Bills if they were trying to trade a guy that only they knew was hurt.

I don’t think that’s the case since McCargo has been practicing.

I’d have to guess his Bills career is done regardless. You don’t “welcome” a guy back after shipping him out like that. He’s definitely headed for the IR and will likely be cut in the offseason. What a shame, and it freakin’ stinks that we’re getting nothing out of this guy now. I almost want them to keep him around now and just hope he gets his back and attitude fixed and dedicates himself in the offseason to getting in better shape and proving himself. Maybe McCargo will still have the chance to help us out in the future, but at this point it’s looking unlikely.

Sigh

What can we do,

franchise him? Ha Ha !!!!

by Joe P. on Oct 15, 2008 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's still under contract until 2010.

7/28/2006: Signed a five-year, $8.6 million contract.

It was a joke

I was trying to think of a way that the Bills could show McCargo they still “love” him and soothe his hurt feelings. I doesn’t matter when his contract is up, he is not a franchise DT.

Bill Polian used to work for Ralph Wilson a while ago

I don’t think Ralph would even have allowed such a shady deal to even be discussed as he is so conscious of his standing in the NFL (or lack thereof) and among the fans. I think this was a case where maybe McCargo has been feeling hurt, never disclosed it since Kollar called him out earlier this year, and then the Colts found the issue since John couldn’t duck the issue like he could with our own staff.

One more question...

Do we get the half eaten kit kat bar back as well? Again, a small market team like us can’t afford to lose any assets….

by krytime on Oct 15, 2008 11:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just read that Tony Dungy consumed the rest of the Kit-Kat. So as compensation the Bills will receive a Snickers wrapper with some chocolate stuck on it.

The Injury...

I’m not sure what team protocol is, but unless the Bills had recently given John McCargo a FULL physical (as the ones that are given for a trade, which includes x-rays and MRIs apparently), then they would have no way of knowing about the herniated disc. A herniated disc in your back is usually asymptomatic most of the time and just flares up when you aggravate it… so it probably doesn’t even affect McCargo’s play. I don’t see the point to putting him on IR, who will take his place? There’s no incentive for McCargo to go out there and lay down on us if he wants any shot at making another team next season.

If the Bills just scrap him now, then that just means we lost a 4th rounder…. :(

I don’t see the point to putting him on IR, who will take his place?

Well, who would have taken his place if he was still in Indy? That’s not the issue here. The issue is that the Bills tried to trade the guy, succeeded, then failed; if they trot him back out onto the field and expect him to give them his all, they’re insane. No, he’s likely headed straight to IR.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 16, 2008 6:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Would they put him on the inactive list for awhile?

That way, he could still play if needed in a pinch…

Get the Bills back to the big game!

McCargo's injury

McCargo has a bulging disc, which is different from a herniated disc.

The disc is essentially a bag of soft material that seperates the vertebre. The condition is just what it sounds like, McCargo’s disc has shifted and now sticks out a little. It’s a strange injury for a player to have. Discs bulge over time and typically people who get them are much older than McCargo. Herniated discs are usually the result of an accident or collision of some kind. It’s a harmless problem unless the bag herniates (ruptures). The fluid inside the disc aggravates the spinal nerves and causes pain. McCargo’s likely treatment will be restrictions on weight lifting along with some heat and ice.

If the Bills do put McCargo on the IR it will show a lot about how they think of him as a player. Since he has an injury with no symptons and almost no treatment there is no reason to put him on IR unless they simply don’t want him on the roster anymore. I don’t think the Bills will place McCargo on the IR unless the team doctors think his disc is bulging to the point where it is at a high risk to rupture.
