Color me flabbergasted. Who here thinks McCargo passed a Bills physical once the trade was voided by Indy?

Unless it happened in the past few days, he’s been playing with the injury. I don’t see why that would keep him from practicing now. Having a trade voided is the reason I’m surprised he’s practicing. He’s still better than Corey Mace, so we might as well try to get what we can out of McCargo now….

That must be a bit…..awkward

I just wrote this in a different thread:

McCargo has a bulging disc, which is different from a herniated disc.

The disc is essentially a bag of soft material that seperates the vertebre. The condition is just what it sounds like, McCargo’s disc has shifted and now sticks out a little. It’s a strange injury for a player to have. Discs bulge over time and typically people who get them are much older than McCargo. Herniated discs are usually the result of an accident or collision of some kind. It’s a harmless problem unless the bag herniates (ruptures). The fluid inside the disc aggravates the spinal nerves and causes pain. McCargo’s likely treatment will be restrictions on weight lifting along with some heat and ice.

If the Bills do put McCargo on the IR it will show a lot about how they think of him as a player. Since he has an injury with no symptons and almost no treatment there is no reason to put him on IR unless they simply don’t want him on the roster anymore. I don’t think the Bills will place McCargo on the IR unless the team doctors think his disc is bulging to the point where it is at a high risk to rupture.

There is no reason whatsoever for McCargo not to be practicing. It is essentially a non-injury. I have no idea why Indy voided the trade unless they felt that McCargo’s bulging disc is a sign of how injury prone he is. It is a very uncommon injury for someone so young.

Great report kaisertown

Would it be better for McCargo to leave it alone and see if it ruptures, or would he be better getting the vertebrae fused in the off-season?

If the team doctors thought there was any risk of the disc rupturing, he wouldn’t be practicing. They will probably just ice him after each practice, limit his weight lifting and moniter the disc closely with an MRI every week or so. Your average person wouldn’t have a surgical procedure for a bulging disc, but in McCargo’s case I could see how he could have surgery in the offseason.

He also needs to lose the extra weight he put on this past offseason

The Bills reported I think he was like 30 pounds overweight coming into TC and that can definetly be assisting in giving him a bulging disc. The issue here is that he needs to lose some weight and get his step back.

This turn of events can only be beneficial...

Sure its a bit uncomfortable for him having to come back to the team that just tried to trade him but the fact that as a first round draft pick that couldn’t even get traded for a 4th, should definitely ring a bell somewhere in him. If this guy gave better effort he could be a very good player, the flashes he’s shown is proof of that.

Now the message is quite clear, work or your goose is cooked. He is so lucky to be able to learn behind a guy like Stroud that he should take full advantage.

He can’t be worse so I view this turn of events quite beneficial.

who knows

I feel like he is lazy, unmotivated. He would rather eat cookies and play Halo than practice. It happens, teams miss on 1st round picks ALL THE TIME! They hit on Whitner, Lynch and hopefully McKelvin.

Yup

Last year he was looking like he could be a playmaking DT that this team needed. Remember he got the giants RB in the backfield on the Bills yardline on 4th down last year? I think hes got the talent and I think this might have been the kick in the ass that he needed.

It must be so awkward in that locker room.

I mean the guy was sent packing, and the Bills were apparently happy to replace him with either a practice squad player or third string player. And now he’s back and everything’s hunky dorry?
Wonder what Stroud or Schobel or Kelsay or Whintner would say about this whole situation if given the chance. Got a feeling DJ put the kaibash on any player comments about `ol Johnboy, though.

I imagine the captains are having a busy week...

First, they have to deal with the TG thing. Can’t imagine Royal, Schouman, or Fine felt to good until 4:00 Tuesday. That kind of thing never does well for your confidence.

Now, they have to deal with McCargo coming back? Eash. With such a young team, I’m sure there are a lot of eyes on them watching to see how they react to all of this.

Who wear’s the letters on this team again? I can’t recall off of the top of my head.

Edwards/Evans (offense), Kelsay/Whitner (defense), Moorman/Wilson (special teams)

This whole situation is very odd. By all accounts, this is one of the closest, if not the closest, Bills team in recent memory. With McCargo getting traded and thrown under the bus by his own position coach, then not only returning to the team, but the locker room and the practice field, I would love to be a fly on the wall during defensive tackle meetings this week. Supposedly, Whitner invites all the defensive players to his house on Thursday nights for dinner. Think McCargo is in attendance tonight?

Coming in I had high hopes for him.

Let’s try that again. He had a good year last year. I now wonder about his motor though. We like high motor players.
I had three bulging discs about 2 yrs ago. The neurosurgeon told me that about one third of them go back into place, but it can take a year or more. In my case about a year and a half. Depending on the site, different muscles or a group of them are pinched off to varying degrees causing pain. From what I read, his is just one and not causing much of any pain. If that is the case, he is a lucky buckaroo. There is a German man made disc that is available in Europe. Not sure in Canada. This seems to be the way of the future in disc surgery. Any surgery to repair his disc means trimming the bulge and that usually herniates it. If he can play with it, do so and wait to see what happens in the off season. The recovery time from trimming the disc is not bad as I recall. If I were him, I’d get an incline table and do stretching routines.
I hope the light goes on for him soon. Those flashes are good.

Welcome back, John.

Now go get a bunch of sacks and TFLs so you don’t get cut at the end of the season.

cause that seems right…

That would be BS. If the Colts reject the trade and then were to sign him soon after he was released….

Actually, in the Clayton article you linked (via Rotoworld), Clayton said nothing about the Colts trying to sign McCargo if they released him. That sounds more like speculation on Rotoworld’s part.

Threw me off when they started with according to Clayton

and then had the stuff about the Colts in the same paragraph and color text.

I agree that it would be shady as hell. As much as I want a big effective DT I don’t want the Colts to get one that way.

I like the other conspiracy theory better, they made the trade then former Colts 3rd round pick Quinn Pitcock who quit before the season agreed to return to the team. The Colts found an excuse to fail McCargo on the physical to void the trade because they had their new NT and are going to use the roster spot for Pitcock. The very slim evidence for this one is here
