Kellen Winslow

I got bored today and went to the BB message board and came across a lively discussion on whether to trade for kellen winslow at the end of the season.  First of all i dont know what kind of contract kellen is in, but it seems interesting.  i think the main question comes down to "is this a kid with severe problems mentally and immature or is it just the organazation he is in that he is unhappy with?"  obviously he is seen as bad as shockey and his complaints and antics, but shockey calmed down this season it seemed.  anyways to the point, winslow is only 25 years old, and a real threat at the TE position.  avg blocker, but really excels at catching the ball.

in theory, this would give the bills lynch, edwards, evans, jackson, reed, and possibly winslow on the offensive side of the ball.  no one can argue that wouldnt be a hell of an offensive attack.  but of course his attitude remains.  i think if he can prove hes not an a-hole and have faith that whitner, edwards and jauron could keep him check, hed be a grreat asset.  i would give a second and 5 for winslow maybe get a 6 or 7 in return also.

i thought i would just throw this out there, feel free to call me dumb, but winslow (love him or hate him) has the potential to be a great TE, and hes still young.  maybe with age comes maturity?

Terrible idea

I had a discussion with a Browns fan yesterday and he agreed, Winslow is a selfish player. We hear all the time about how much this team likes each other and they go out an battle for each other. Winslow has a ton of talent and very little desire, let another team make the mistake of trading for him.

No thanks

I’d steer clear of him at all costs.

Big mouth, selfish, cry baby, knees of a 45 year old, can’t block, shaky hands and most of all he wants a new contract. No thank you

Draft

A lot of people are talking about us taking a TE from Missouri or Notre Dame I think. (For the first time in a few years I am not thinking about the draft after six games!)

Worth the 32nd pick in the draft?

Love the size, love the production, love the attitude, love the petigree. What’s his draft status? Let’s do it.

GO BLUE!!!

Doubt it

He looks like a WR, so I’m not sure how complete a TE he is. Blocking? Ehhh, probably not in their spread O…

No

We need to draft Alex Mack.

I’d rather draft a heady player than take one who is full of himself.

by MattRichWarren on Oct 22, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

We can find someone like John Carlson in the draft this season. Carlson came to the Seahawks in the 2nd round (38th pick) and has 19 cathces for 201 yards and 2 TDs for a team that really just stinks like 10 day old leftovers that have been sitting on the counter that whole time.

He is a smart player, keeps his mouth shut and head down and is becoming a favorite target of the Frye and Wallace out here, and was becoming one of Hasselbecks go to guys before injury forced him out of the lineup. His numbers are slightly higher than Royal, 2 more recpetions, 46 more yards and 1 more TD, and I think his blocking in the games I’ve watched is a bit below Royal, then again Robert is known for his blocking and has 5 more seasons under his belt. Oh yeah, and Carlson has no fumbles.

hang on a minute everybody

I don’t really like the selfish, big mouth argument you’re all throwing out there. Many of the best players in the league are just that and we all know many of the players on the great teams in the 90s certainly were of that variety. There is no problem bringing in a few arrogant pricks with talent so long as you have a coach and QB who can keep them in check. Winslow is certainly not T.O. and I don’t think its fair to question his desire. The guy wants to win and plays hard.

That said ,the argument against him I do like is that his knees are a major concern and that he is always injured. He’s had two healthy seasons so far. However, there is no denying that when he is healthy he is one of the top 2 tight ends in the league (I even think a healthy Winslow is better than Gates).

It has just recently come out that prior to the trade deadline, the Browns had been offering Winslow to any bidders, probably wanting a 2 and a 5th or even more. That is a lot to pay for a guy with questionable attitude and injury problems.

However, with that said, we are a team that is chock full of blah blah, better than average but only barely tight ends. Fine and Schouman are young and can fill in when needed, they have already done so. So if we had Winslow, I would think our offense could explode when he was healthy and tick along just fine with Trent Edwards conducting the same offense he does now with a backup Fine or Schouman coming in when he is injured.

I don’t think it is such a bad idea at all.

I think we need to see where we are at the end of the season before this sort of discussion

We won’t know what we need, or what is available by the end of the season. Winslow could blow out his knees again before the end of season, and I wouldn’t want to rely on the lemon to make my offense go then! We also might find that there are other options available in FA for TEs or in the draft that would be a better emotional or chemistry fit here than Kellen.

Yes having a brash guy on a team of guys who are nose to the grindstone types can work, for a while, please see T.O and the Eagles for a good example of that. Is he T.O, I don’t think so, but he is more of a headache than his diminishing stat returns are starting to show. Yes I like his desire to win, but obviously the FO here didn’t even want to touch the guy with a 10 foot pole, and I can bet you we wouldn’t have offered anything better than what we did for Tony G.

true enough

but for the sake of speculation, it seems like most rumblers agree that we are three positions away from being a truly complete team. (If you ask me Ellison is just fine at OLB, at least fine enough to drop it down the list of priorities). Center, Tight End, and Defensive End

The front office has already demonstrated that it believes they have built a good enough team through the draft to start being able to trade away draft picks to immediately address holes. The FO deserves credit for using picks to build this team and then realizing when we were ready to start using draft picks to obtain talent. Only complete or near complete teams can begin to do this, those that try to build through trading and FA are doomed to fail. We sent a 3 and 5 for Stroud and obviously tried to send another 3 for Gonzalez. I give them kudos for doing a great job with this team.

Let’s see if a Winslow trade would help or hurt our ability to obtain all three positions of need in the off-season. Gonzalez would have been perfect for a 3 because then we could have used a 1 and 2 on a DE and Center respectively. If we do trade for Winslow he will probably cost a 2, which would make it difficult to gain talent at both center and defensive end for next season with a 1 and 3. One of the two would have to be neglected or at least relegated in the draft to a 3rd round selection. Not good.

However, if we can find out what free agents will be available at center or defensive end next off-season, we could find out if there is a suitable pick-up for either position and then use our 1on the remaining need (that is assuming there is a round 1 quality center next season, there almost always is a DE worthy of a 1st pick, can’t say the same about center).

A preliminary glance at free agents at linebacker in 2009 offers potential star talent like the Cardinals Karlos Dansby and the solid Eric Barton of the Jets. Center looks less promising, with Matt Birk as of now the only attractive option and odds are the Vikings keep him.

But I guess in the end what you say is correct. We are 5-1, have a chance at being a division champ and a playoff contender so it really isnt worth a discussion until after the season, but it sure is still fun to speculate

excuse me

also forgot to include potential FA defensive ends which include: Julius Peppers, Terrell Suggs, Bertrand Berry, and Kevin Carter. Of the four I’d say Suggs is most likely not to be retained, although Peppers inconsistent play could let me test the market as well. All of these options would probably cost too much

Hmm

peppers wouldn’t be oevrly priced because of his onconsistency I think but because of his inconsistency, that would make me a little hesitant to get him. We need a colid, consistent, pass rusher and the only way were going to get that is most likely through the draft . Round 1 in my opinion.

Peppers will get a contract that exceeds Schobel’s in all likelihood.

yes

I would love a DE in round 1. I know last year I was against all the pass rushing crowd (I think Kurupt was leading that war cry?) because I really thought we needed a great corner of the future. Now that we have one, and its paying off we’ve had injuries to our DB starters, I would love to grab a DE in round 1 and a center in round 2. Which is exactly why I wanted TG so bad. But I guess some are pointing out that Royal isn’t playing too bad this year. Plus, it seems like he has a good rapport with Edwards.

Not sure I get you there

McKelvin had two TD’s nailed to his chest last game. He’s clearly not ready yet. I’d sure like to see McGee back in there.

true

I was referring to if we did not have McKelvin. I love Youboty but its good we have depth. Plus, hes getting real game experience. We can now officially ignore CB in the draft after this year.

He wants a new contract though. We don’t need to give out another questionable contract to a guy with too many issues.

PASS

and Winslow drops it!

There are 2-3 strong TEs coming out in the draft who will not have the baggage this dude carries. Now if his daddy was available at 25 – I’sd be all over that move!

LOL sheesh… have we learned nothing from the Cowboys? Adding me-first crybabies to a talented team ultimately leads to team implosion.

This is a terrible idea. PASS.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 22, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well.....

The cowboys added more than just me-first cry babies. T.O. is far more than a cry baby, he calls out his teammates (didn’t he tell the media that Jeff Garcia was gay?), doesn’t accept coaching and is quite clearly a manic depressant and Pacman Jones is a violent offender who was part of an incident which left one man paralyzed for life, man I hate Pacman. Roy Williams is the only comparable of the three to Winslow, a true me-first cry baby, but we haven’t seen enough of him to determine how he will affect that team yet.

Ditto. If there’s anything we should have learned from the disaster that was Donahoe, it’s that team chemistry is as important as the talent level of its individual players. We have something good going here in Buffalo. Let’s not even think about importing a team cancer here.

Desmond Clark

Will be a free agent in the off-season with Greg Olson in Chicago. He’s in his 30s but hes not a team-cancer, at least from what i know.

In the words of Herb Brooks...

“I’m not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right ones.” Winslow is not the right player for this team.

Great reference.

And for the record, I vote to PASS as well. Mr. “I’m a soldier!” Winslow is the apple that fell far from the tree. I’d just as soon take his father…

still its not horrible

and like i said before, i was just throwing this all out there to get feedback. but i still honestly dont think its a hands down “horrible” decision. i also didnt know about desmond clark and greg olsen being FA at the end of the season. id take olsen over winslow anyways, cheaper and less of a headache. and i dont think you can compare the cowboys to this debate. the cowboys are buying an entire team, im suggesting one player that we actually need/could use. seriously adding williams to a roster that has TO? thats just not smart, but not in the same league as gettin winslow.

im not familiar with the new te’s coming out, but we just drafted a TE in fine, and i think we should get a good te with experience. i refer back to olsen and clark.

to clarify

I meant that Desmond Clark would be a free agent, not Greg Olson. Clark will be a free agent because Olson has broken out and Clark will not be resigned. But I agree with you that the Cowboys are not comparable to signing Winslow.

I don't think...

Winslow would have the same issues in Buffalo that he has in Cleveland. Besides, there are too many young leaders on this football team to allow a player pull that kind of stuff. Do you see anyone in that Browns locker room (other than maybe Willie McGinnest) that is a high character leader? Besides, have any you of actually heard the comments he was suspended for? They weren’t crazy outlandish comments: he basically said the staff is impersonal with the players and he disclosed that he had stapholococcus aureus growing on him… which the Browns desperately wanted to censure.

I’m not saying let’s do it rah rah rah but we’re not talking about a Terrell Owens here, if the Bills got this guy I would be stoked. But if the draft has some excellent TEs we can pluck then there’s no sense in trading for him.

"I don't agree with a damn thing you say, but I would die for your right to say it."

Granted

he would be a great addition, talent-wise, and you’re probably right, he likely would straighten up in Buffalo. I just don’t see the Bills’ FO giving up that much for a guy who is injured as often as Winslow.

Chase Coffman

I live in St. Louis, went to Mizzou, and watch every game that is on tv. Chase Coffman is flat out the best TE in college football…maybe in the last five years. He can catch like nobody you have ever seen, runs well, and is mentally very tough. His dad played in the NFL for 10 years. No attitude problems either. I’d spend a first round pick on him and we’d be set for 10 years.

by patton044 on Oct 23, 2008 7:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't see any mention of his blocking ability in your enthusiasm

And also, his size.
We need a guy with it all. If we’re only drafting a role player, we’re right back where we started. If Royal is in, he’s likely in max protection or at best a dump-off alternative. If Shouman’s in, they have to cover him but he’s not much of a blocker.
The Tony Gonzalez tight ends of the world don’t come around that often. I get that. But we’ve drafted role players for this position for years. If we’re only going for a pass catching TE, then let’s continue to use a 4th or a 7th (Fine and Schouman, respectively), and go for a defensive end or center in the early rounds.
