Where's the D?

Another week goes by and still another game that the Bills defense cannot cause pressure on the opposing QB.  Our D-Line/LB's does a fine job stopping the run...we know this already; buy why can't we pressure the QB?  We've blitzed in previous games to cause pressure and it's turned out relatively good for us in either a sack, pressure, and even forced fumbles!

I was very disappointed in Fewell's approach to this week's game in terms of pressuring the Dolphins.  He only dialed up about 2 blitzes and Scott was able to get a sack on one of those.  If that's what it takes to pressure the QB don't you think that is something we should do more often?  2 of our 3 LB's are phenominal and are able to put pressure on the QB if they're allowed (excluding Ellison because he's a bum!)

McGee...WTF?  Why was he even allowed to give up 160 some yards to Ginn Jr?  Why wasn't he taken out earlier in the game when it was obvious he was having coverage issues?  I've noticed it for a very long time that he gives up too much of a cushion making it easy for WR's to run hooks and sprint screens.  His play today was very questionable.  His heart/mind was in the right place but swallow your pride and let the coaches put someone in who can play 100%.

Those were the 2 major issues I had with todays game.  This was supposed to a way to ease into our divisional games, instead we got embarrassed by a mediocre Dolphins team.  We've always had Pennington's number but for some reason we couldn't pressure him to save our lives.  If this is the way our Defensive Coordinator is going to continue to put together gameplans then this promising season is going to come in for a crash landing!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Actually, he dialed up a LOT more blitzes than that. You’re speaking of the two that were actually effective.

Re-watch the game, if you can, and you may notice that Ellison is actually one of our better performers defensively. He’s not a bum. He probably shouldn’t be a starter, but the dude can play.

Agreed, he is the perfect 4th LB for any team

He can come in and play well for short stretches, but he is not an every down starter. I like him on STs and especially as a guy with some speed who can spell the other LBers. The whole Crowell thing has forced him out of his more normal and I think comfortable role. He hasn’t disappointed me much at all considering what he has faced so far this year.

Please note that it’s the defensive scheme, not McGee himself, giving that cushion.

Is it totally though? I think it’s definitely Fewell’s doing, but Greer creeps up closer to the line near the snap. McGee goes the other way. Either way, both should be up on the line regardless….

i thought

it looked like McGee might have still be hurt. Is this possible? I hope that can explain his awful performance.

The numbers game

I think after last week Fewell thought that maybe McGee at 70-80% was better than McKelvin at 100%. After that 1st quarter, McGee should have been put back on the bench as the dime back, and Corner and McKelvin brought up one spot in the depth chart for this game.

This time it was more noticeable

When McGee is healthy, he has the speed and quickness to make up that ground. Today his heart was in the right place, but he couldn’t get his usual jump back towards the line of scrimmage like he usually does.

Embarrassed? Yes. Mediocre Dolphins team? Clearly not. The Dolphins are good.

Come on Brian

they were 2-4. They define mediocrity. They whipped us today, but we’re not talking about a playoff team here. Please

agree with Kurupt

Dolphins are not good. They beat us because we played sloppier than they did. Both teams looked terrible in my opinion. They were keeping our drives alive with penalties and mistakes and we were giving up our drives with turnovers and penalties right back. Honestly, how much longer do we have to wait before we start being able to take over a game on the ground. Honestly.I have been a big proponent for some time that we are one of the best AFC teams in the league and I still believe that. But until we develop a more consistent run blocking scheme we are going to be a poor man’s Steelers. That’s still good but not good enough.

marshawn actually had

a pretty good day running, 4.7 ypc average, but he only had 13 carries which was questionable. Fred had a decent amount of carries too so that may have been why. I think the run game will improve. Marshawn is a beast inside the 10 though and he is 1 TD away from as many as he had last year.

by jdol1568 on Oct 26, 2008 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Jackson too

They should have used the two running backs more effectively. Where running the ball failed for the Dolphins, we could have taken advantage. That was poor playcalling on the part of Turk. We should have taken advantage of their over pursuit; more misdirection, more designed screen passes. Instead, Turk called a game like mike Martz, when we didn’t have to.

First visibly poor coaching job of the year…besides the Cardinals, but this game seemed different, maybe because I was able to watch it at home instead of work.

On Defense, I don’t understand why our corners can’t man up. I think Mcgee was physically good for the first half, but tapered drastically. If anything McKelvin should have subbed with him more often and work him back slowly. Anything would have been better than getting carved like turkey by dam Pennington and his beety eyes.

But then again, of the O gets two redzone TDs in the first quarter and then we have a win even if they mke the blocked field goal.

Bad game, so i hope we can bounce back. The Pats and Jets won, so we need to win the next two games in order to separate ourselves.

The Bills CAN win every game

what I want to know

is why was 3 straight carries inside the 10 on that halted drive given to fred? Marshawn is obviously the better back for that situation

by jdol1568 on Oct 27, 2008 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Good question

I thought he was hurt at that point but that wasn’t the case. I think Turk might be a litle to enamored with Jackson and is getting to “cute” playing him in that situation when if he’s going to pound the ball 3 straight times Lynch should have been doing that.

by jimkutica on Oct 27, 2008 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Aren’t we? They’re 2 games out of the AFC East race and right in the thick of the AFC wild card chase. They’ve been mediocre; they’re not this season. Pennington can beat just about any team in the league.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 27, 2008 6:36 AM EDT up reply actions

They still are mediocre Brian. Most of the AFC is defined by mediocrity.

Pennington can help beat the teams that let him go out and beat them. That was the case yesterday.

True that about the AFC. The NFC is clearly the dominant conference.

Still think you’re underestimating Miami, though. I think they’re about on the level with us, and I still consider the Bills a good football team.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 27, 2008 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe they are on par with us, but that’s more a criticism to us than a compliment to them, IMO. Miami is a decent team, but by no means are they good. They are improving and will probably be rather good by next year. I just don’t see why Miami all of a sudden deserves all these accolades. They were 2-4 heading into yesterday.

We’ve always had Pennington’s number

Wrong. We had Pennington’s number last year in that we swept him, but he’s always had good statistical performances against us. He’s the type of QB that eats our defense alive (see: Warner, Kurt). So no, we have not even come close to “always having Pennington’s number”.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 26, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

bottom line

is we see how this team now reacts to this loss next week vs the Jets. That is a must win game for this squad. Another team that we should beat, at home, we have to take care of business and come out with a sense of urgency.

Today was defined by poor execution, mental mistakes, and getting out-coached. I’ll give it to the Dolphins. They are heading in the right direction. They have a great future with that coaching staff, and Bill Parcells buying the groceries

Dolphins are good, but this game was there for the taking early. We just started bad on offense and then their defense was hungry. Both teams we lost to, were two good home teams coming off of two losses
The team has to get more physical on defense as well. Why don’t our corners jam the other team’s wide receivers? And how big of a factor was not having Aaron Schoebel? We might think he’s not doing much sometimes, but without him it just might show up. I’m sure we would have moved him around so he’s not always on Jake Long, rushing the middle or from the left, and some stunts, and 94 would have had a big game. I bet he will in Toronto (something that looks like BS now more than ever

Fewell is afraid of the long ball

He is so sacred of it, he is willing to let his team get beat by any other method than that. The long ball shows up on ALL the highlight shows whereas steady gains do not, so no one outside fans who actually pay attention notice how bad a job he is doing. By keeping the long ball down, it also looks nice in the category rankings meaning he might be able to finagle a new job somewhere else when he gets canned (hopefully at the end of this season).

Schobel

I think we have learned quite a bit about how important Schobel is to this defense. He gets ripped a lot for not being a complete DE or whatever that means but I don’t think its very fair. He’s played at a Pro Bowl level for multiple years and the fact is that he is a disruptive force on our defensive line and he forces offenses to adapt to his presence on the field. He may not be flashy or a speed rusher but I for one definitely appreciate his presence more now than ever. It was horrifying to watch Pennington have all day to pick apart our zones.

Agreed Marv

I said it earlier this week and year, with Parcells running the Phins, they will only get better and tougher to beat. We really needed this one, because I think their team will be even tougher to beat next game unless injuries strike a lot of their starters down.

I was encouraged that we stayed in the game considering how badly our men played and how poorly the coaching staff did in making sound decisions. But we cannot continue to sink to the level of the opponent we are playing that week. The Phins are a decent team working towards becoming a good one. We are a good team trapped at the upper portion of that level and not seemingly able to break through the ceiling into the Great category till we put games like this one away.

Would you say coaching is the main reason for not reaching that next level?

I might go there….along with inconsistent play all around, some random growing pains, a lack of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball, and absolutely no pass rush. I think we’re still a year away from being really good, but with smarter play and some better game planning, we can win 10-11 or so games this year based on our weak schedule and be a factor in Jan. That’d be nice, but this team has some major holes that just seem to hamstring us so much….

Coaching is one of the reasons

I think DJ is a good coach for the players we have now. Turk is showing flashes of becoming a good OC, but this is his first year of calling plays, and we just have to accept the lumps that come with the learning curve of him.

Fewell and April have no such excuses for bad play by their portions of the teams. April will get less crap from me than Fewell since we did let 5 of his best players walk this past FA period, and he has kept this team in games the past couple of years at time due to his stellar work with the STs. Fewell, well, people know where I stand regarding him and his keep the CBs 8 yards off the ball on 2 & 5 or 3 & 3 situations. I think he may be the biggest coaching stumbling block we have.

Offensive Perssonel wise, its the lack of a good TE, and C .

TE- Schouman is a decent receiver, who knows what in the world we have in Fine, and well, we all saw why we want to remove Royal from the team entirely on Sunday. When we lost Reed today, it really brought home the desperate need we have regarding a true, real threat of a TE. No, I don’t mean a Witten caliber game changer, more like a real move the chains type, solid pass catching and decent blocking type TE whom teams have to key on regardless of the personnal on the field on 3rd down.

By the way, the loss of Reed CANNOT be understated for this game. Every week Trent looks to Reed to bail him out of messes and the guy just makes the damn play. When Reed went down, Trent’s game went south pretty quickly, and that was because you KNOW he doesn’t trust Royal to make a play unless Trent has no other choice but to throw it to him.

C- Preston wasn’t horrid, nor did Fowler stink up the joint, and now we all know why Preston was pulled late in the game, it was to get Whittle off the field. Still, being able to say “He wasn’t horrid” is NOT how I want to look at a game whether or not it is a win or loss for this position. I want a real C who when Ron looks at the tape he can say, “We honestly didn’t hear much from the C today good or bad” how sad that is the level of play we wish to attain at this position? Until we get a guy who can make the line calls and can handle for most of the time the massive NTs we face thanks to three 3-4 Ds in our division, this will continue to hurt us.

Defense personnel wise I think the issue is lack of a real pass rush DE, starting OLB, and quality LB/DB depth.

DE- Are our ends overpaid for what we get? Yes, is there anyone coming up in FA any better than who we have? Debatable. As it stands we need a pure pass rush DE this offseason. People think that when we say a Pass Rush guy, we need some barn burning DE. That is not completely true, a good pass rush end is fast enough to get by a OT (doesn’t need to be 4.4. speed ya know), strong enough to bull rush as needed and fight through double teams, and smart enough to make adjustments on the fly. Needless to say thats a tough set of skills to pick up anywhere, but we need to find some varation of this type of player who can be an impact next year.

OLB starter- Thanks to the Crowell mess, we have Ellison who is a solid backup OLB, but no full time starter, playing full time. Not a good situation, and alot will be talked about here and at ODB about how to fill this hole in the offseason. It may be a FA or a draft pick, but we need Ellison where he belongs, on STs full time and backing up Kawika and the new starter which is his strength. Until that is fixed, we will have struggles in the LB corp, though so far we have covered that up pretty well so far.

LB/DB Depth- Well, this is an area we thought was completely covered at the start of the season, and it was until these past 2 weeks. The lose of DiGi to injury hurt the LB corp today, they looked tired by the end of the game since most of them played the whole game. When DiGi and Bowen get healthy and our new OLB allows Ellison to return to his comfort area, our depth will be OK, but we may want to think of a 7th guy to keep around if we continue to be injury prone there.

Our DB depth which looked good at the start of the season with McGee, Youbuty, Corner, McKelvin, and Greer is now reeling. The fact that we have kept 5 safeties helps a little, but while Scott is a decent cover player, he can’t keep up with the Ted Ginns of the world. Simpson looks to have regressed slightly since his injury. Today on Cheech’s run for a TD, Simpson stopped his feet and tried to should Half Baked instead of moving forward aggressively to try and keep him from the endzone, he didn’t and there went up 6 points in the Phins favor. Some of this can be masked/repaired with improved coverage schemes, but it sure seemed today that Fewell was afraid to run McKelvin out there even though he couldn’t play worse than the hobbled McGee.

I have a feeling that Bills fans had better be ready for a roller coaster ride the rest of the season. I still believe that a 9-7 or 10-6 record will be in the offering for us without a lot of trouble this year due to the slide of the traditional powers, and we earn a playoff berth. I feel we are a year, and a real TE, C, and OLB with a pass rush specialist if we can find one away from being a consistent threat to the AFC in general for a yearly playoff spot. If I had my druthers, Fewell would be gone as well and replaced by a DC like one of the Ryans or Ron Rivera, or even Ron Meeks of the Colts, imagine if he had Stroud and Mitchell to work with instead of just Freeney and the Brittle Man?

Very nice. You should have made this a separate post. It seems to have been lost here…

Glad you brought up April. Not that he has coached poorly this year at all, but the ST’s units just haven’t been as good this year as years past. The kick coverage team has struggled at times. The punting unit has been up and down. And the kick return unit has been pretty terrible thus far, though I think that’s mostly due to McKelvin running towards the sidelines every return and showing no cutback instincts.

I really hope we have a shot at the kid from Texas, DE Brian Orakpo. I’m frightened to death of Texas players, but this kid looks like the real deal. He has a nice first step, a pretty good motor, nice pass rush skills, great size and an all-around DE game.
