Sans Edwards, Bills fall hard in Arizona

Edwards injured on third play of game (Associated Press)

To quote Anchorman: "Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast."  J.P. Losman couldn't retaliate with a trident.  Not-so-obscure pop culture references aside, the Buffalo Bills can no longer count themselves amongst the NFL's unbeaten teams.

Trent Edwards suffered a concussion on the third play of the game, and an abysmal defensive effort by the Bills led to a 41-17 loss in the desert to the Arizona Cardinals.

Buffalo is 4-1 heading into the bye week, and the health of Edwards will be the main topic of interest over the next two weeks.  Edwards was injured on a hit by Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson (pictured to the right); he was on the turf for a number of moments, walked off of the field with assistance, was carted to the locker room and did not return.  I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about Edwards in the coming days.

Defense can't stop Warner
It was a poor defensive effort, however, that was the main culprit in Buffalo's first loss of the season.  Cardinals QB Kurt Warner enjoyed one of the better performances of his career, completing 33 of 42 passes for 250 yards and two scores in a dominant offensive outing for Arizona.  The Cards didn't make too many big plays through the air, but they didn't have to; Arizona held the ball for over 36 minutes in this one and wore down Buffalo's defense from the start.  Edgerrin James and Tim Hightower combined for 3 rushing scores.

Coming into this game, Buffalo's defense led the league by a wide margin in third down defense, holding opponents to around a 20% conversion rate.  The Cardinals weren't listening; they converted 9 of 15 third-down opportunities (60%) to control the ball, and the Bills couldn't make a play defensively to counter their dominance.  It was quite out of character for this Bills defense; rest assured we'll be looking for reasons why in some more in-depth film reviews this week.

Losman keeps things interesting... for a while
J.P. Losman replaced Edwards early in the first quarter and kept things interesting for a time.  Trailing 14-0, Losman found Lee Evans wide open for an 87-yard touchdown to cut the lead in half; he later scored on a quarterback draw in the first half to cut the lead to 21-14, which Arizona extended by halftime.

Losman's stat line looks OK (15 completions in 21 attempts, 220 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 101.2 QB rating), but it doesn't tell the whole story.  He didn't get much help from his defense, to be certain, but Losman took 5 sacks, lost two fumbles and threw an interception, killing any faint hopes of another fourth-quarter comeback attempt.  Losman doesn't deserve blame for the loss by any stretch of the imagination, but his errors certainly didn't help the cause.

Falling behind early, the Bills never had a chance to establish the offensive balance that was so crucial to their success on the day.  Marshawn Lynch finished with 55 yards on 13 carries, Fred Jackson carried once for five yards, and the Bills had their worst offensive performance of the season.  That was bound to happen, however, with Edwards out of the lineup and the defense performing so poorly.

Game Balls
None.  There are no awards in a losing effort.  We can only hope that these young Bills use this effort as motivation to continue to get better.  The Bills simply ran into a buzz saw in Arizona; the Cardinals are a very good football team (clearly the best team in the NFC West) with a huge home-field advantage, and the Bills were missing their leader.  Take this loss with a grain of salt; it's unfortunate, but it's also very clearly not the end of the world.

Oh, and Mr. Edwards?  Get well soon.

At least Marshawn averaged 4.2 ypc! I didn’t think we’d see another game over 4 ypc again this year!

This game was dismal. I hope this doesn’t turn into one of those losses that cause a downward spiral from here on out. Hopefully, Edwards will be 100% in 2 weeks and we’ll be ready to take on SD. They’ll be a desperate team coming into Buffalo, and we need to play with the same sense of urgency because another loss followed by a very tough game in Miami could really spiral this nice start out of control.

It’s safe to say our D needs to find ways to start making plays. We obviously can’t get to the QB, so at some point our secondary has to make some plays themselves. I’ve been terribly disppointed with our D’s playmaking this year. Only 6 turnovers in 5 games is pretty pathetic….

We really need Edwards.

I have been thinking about your pass rushing DE with our #1 pick idea

I am in!!! We need a center (big news flash), but we don’t have time to develop one. So, if there is not a clear cut NFL ready center coming out of college this year, then DE it is. Which, means we need a FA center. We may have covered this before, but anyone going to be available at the end of this season?

Along with Edwards, I am concerned about Stroud’s health. He seemed to be having a lot of trouble.

There is a center availble in the draft

named Alex Mack, goes to Cal. Some say he is the best center in a decade.

My personal belief is that Terrell Suggs (from Baltimore) could be had in free agency while cutting either Kelsay or Schoebel as a cap saving move. Neither are playing as they get paid.

Matt Birk is also availble in free agency. Could sign him a draft a center in the second or third to devleop behind him.

Good stuff...Thanks

Has Birk recovered from injury?

As far as I know

he isn’t listed on an injury list and I saw him play last week.

Used to be

he is a DE now. And a real good one.

by RabidBuffalo on Oct 5, 2008 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aren’t they still a 3-4 D? He must be an OLB then. Unless he plays on the line 100% of the time.

I can’t see us paying big money for a DE. Not after spending all that money on the junk we have now. The FO isn’t going to cut the guys we have now and admit their fiscal mistakes.

It’s to early to say DE #1 just yet, but I firmly believe that an upgrade to Kelsay and Denney is in order.

by krytime on Oct 5, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brian, I know you are an opptimist

and it seems silly to look ahead already, but this lose made a few weaknesses very clear. They were there before, but they were glanced over because we won but that doesn’t mean they weren’t weaknesses. I love this team and am very proud of what they accomplished but this was going to be a year in which to gauge problems and then go and fix them. We have plenty of cap space and all of our picks. We have some great young talent here but the holes are glaring and must be fixed if the team can achieve it’s full potential.
The season isn’t over by any means, but it is time to be realistic to see what can be done in the offseason to be a better team.

by RabidBuffalo on Oct 5, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I’m optimistic, but I also like to live in the now. This team CAN sew up some of their weaknesses, and more importantly, they can get healthy.

The Bills are 4-1, their schedule is still iffy, and they’re looking to end an 8-year playoff drought. I just don’t see why we can’t put off the “how to fix the Bills” talk until those goals have been achieved or are out of reach.

by Brian Galliford on Oct 5, 2008 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think because

the weaknesses are so obvious. No pass rush, poor O-line play, and the like. It will fester all year and cause many problems. It seems to me the problems can’t be fixed internally and it’s a way of just filing away those problems to see what does happen.

I am not hoping they continue, but they were worries of mine from the outset and they look to be manifesting themselves.

Doesn’t necessarily have to be the #1, but we need pass rushing options and multiple ones at that. It’s obvious that our DE’s have nothing to offer in that area. I would definitely start looking at Chris Ellis and try getting him ready for playing time soon. Copeland Bryan is downright terrible, I can’t imagine Ellis would do much worse. If I have to watch Bryan fly upfield while a running back runs right by him for a big gain one more time, I will go bonkers.

If we have to buy a situational pass rusher in free agency, so be it. We need that.

Woot! I win! I think.....

Honestly, we were going to have a bad game soon with the way we’ve been living on the edge, I just wish we hadn’t lost Edwards doing so.

I hope Trent is A-Ok and able to play in 14 days, thank heavens for the Bye this week, were going to need it with Trent and McGee beat up.

I think not having McGee on the field hurt the D more than we thought it would, but the D also just played lousy football, the fundamentals were just not there today (missed tackles, people not making smart plays, etc.) Fewell also did not help the D on a number of plays by having the incorrect package on the field, I saw several times where the Cards would have 3-4 WRs on the field and we would still be in the base 4-3 asking our LBs and Safeties to cover guys who really needed CBs on them.

I think DJ will give the team most of the week off and I hope our guys take it to rest up and get ready for the Chargers who got outplayed by the Phins, who are no jokes with Bill Parcells running the show.

We’re 4-1 and on top of the East still gang, lets just regroup and get ready for a dog fight in 14 days.

today

sucked. Hate to see the mental errors, penalties and inability to make a play defensively. But, we are 4-1, have a bye week to regroup and hopefully we get our Starting QB back cuz God knows how much this season relies on him being healthy.

This is typical Bills Def against pass-heavy offenses though. We rush 4, keep everything underneath, and teams have huge, long drives against us. It is infuriating how we don’t play closer with our DB’s, and how we bltzed so rarely or when it was an obvious 3rd and long and then we blitz. I didn’t like the playcalling of Fewell at all today.

I’m ready for a week break though. But in 2 weeks this team has to come out with fire because the AFC east is there for the taking, but the Bills have to TAKE it with the opportunity right there/

One thing worrying me is this, if Trent is down longterm (3-4 games) our O is not built to work on JPs strengths

Our O is right now predicated on quick, precision passing with the occassional long play. In many ways like a knife fighter (Edwards) who uses quick thrusts and slashes to bleed his opponent out and then finishes them off with a quick thrust to the chest (Raiders, Jags, and St. Louis games).

JP Strikes me more like a medieval warrior using a broadsword who is going for the big blow to either cripple or behead his opponent, and is not capable of fighting for a very long period of time. JP is wonderful at the long ball and getting it down field, no arguements here (see Evans 87 yard bomb today for evidence). But right now our Offense is built around Trent’s strengths which is a quick tempo passing game, JP is not able to take advantage of that style of Offense, it just doesn’t seem his style and I don’t think they mesh well.

Yes we can make the big strike but we have a broadsword enthusiast trying to wield a bowie knife going forward if Trent misses significant time. The real question becomes this, can Turk change the O around in that case to take advantage of JPs strengths and minimize his issues with the quick passing game? I have a feeling the answer may be no since JP is much more reliant on the run game than Trent is.

(Btw, this post is mostly so I could use sharp object imagery, so sue me) ;-P

PFT news about Trent, feels fine maybe lost playing time might be up for Wilson

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/10/05/fine-seems-almost-certain-for-wilson/

A week after a key player for the Arizona Cardinals was knocked out (literally) by a helmet-to-helmet hit, a member of the Cardinals used his hat as a weapon, and almost certainly will be fined for it.

Safety Adrian Wilson sent Bills quarterback Tent Edwards to the showers early by putting the crown of Wilson’s helmet into Edwards’ facemask. The play took on an even higher level of violence as Wilson seemed to intentionally drive his hat into Edwards’ jaw when the two of them hit the ground.

If the goal is to stop these kinds of hits, then Wilson needs to lose a significant chunk of his pay for the week.

Meanwhile, NBC’s Keith Olbermann will likely generate a flurry of calls and e-mails for his comment while narrating highlights of a disoriented Edwards being carted off the field.

"I can see Russia from here" was the line Olbermann attributed to Edwards. It was an objectively funny line, but the pro-Palin viewers in the audience, who surely are already looking for reasons to complain about the polarizing Olbermann’s involvement in a sports show, probably won’t see the humor in it.

Mitchell’s hit on Warner looked worse then Wilson’s hit on Edwards, as far as helmet-to-head goes, IMO.
J.P. showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only does Trent belong as the starter of this team, but after watching him hold onto the ball for so long and look so bad at times, I’m wondering if Trent is out for the San Diego game if Hamdan isn’t a better option. I think Hamdan can do the things that Turk wants to do on offense better then J.P.

Ahem, the original phrase this is modified is as follows

“He brought a gun to a knife fight” I changed to reflect the following.
1- We brought no gun, in fact we didn’t even bother to show up with a proper knife for said fight.
2- The Cards definetly brought a gun, one which put a whole lotta holes in our D, thus the Uzi change for the aforementioned gun.

seriously Brian?

“Losman doesn’t deserve blame for the loss by any stretch of the imagination”

Oh really? I love your analysis on this site Brian but I have to respectfully disagree big time here. Sure our defense was crummy but Losman turned the ball over three times, and if I remember correctly two if not all three were in our own territory! In addition, time of possession was huge in this one and a big reason was that Losman kept giving up the ball and could not sustain drives. I firmly believe that with Edwards in the game we control the clock and methodically move the ball as opposed to the erratic Losman offense we have seen many times before (big play, turnover, big play, bad decision). Losman was his usual jittery self. Our defense didn’t play well but honestly, I didn’t expect them to, the Cardinals offense is a matchup disaster for out defense, especially without McGee.

Either way, I am happy our first loss came before the bye week, this team is young and has to learn that we will not win every game. Also, we lost with Losman not Edwards, which is good for this teams confidence. Plus, Edwards has more time to get healthy.

Man I hope he’s ready for the Chargers.

We need to fix our run blocking now! Its getting unacceptable.

One final point, its one loss guys, no big deal. We are 4-1 and we are playing well, whats important is we have a head start on the rest of the division and we haven’t played them yet. Lets be happy with where we are, this team looks good, and lets get ready to win our divisional matchups.

The Cradinals scored what, the first 5 or 6 times they had the ball, something like that. Losman didn’t start turning the ball over until they fell really far behind. And you can’t blame Royal’s fumble on him.

thats not true

The Cardinals got the lead because of Losman mistakes.

Losman turned the ball over on his second play of the game when we were tied 0-0 and the Cardinals got the ball on the Buffalo 38. The defense has no hope there, TD Cards.

I am not a JP blamer. I know he has been the scapegoat in the past but if we can not admit the HUGE role he played in this loss then I don’t know what we can blame him for. Sure our defense was terrible and I won’t argue that point (I also am getting sick of Peters not being good this year) but Losman is clearly a player that isnt aware of his surroundings. Fact is, we should all appreciate Edwards a lot more after this game. It was not all JPs fault, but man oh man, he really made it very hard for us to win.

And even if Trent is back next game,

we still don’t have a reliable back-up QB. After getting a refresher of what life with JP looks like, maybe it will motivate the O-line to play better! LOL

by Joe P. on Oct 5, 2008 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so boring

you’re blaming a failed handoff b/t a backup qb and a rb in which the rb shifted mid-handoff? perhaps trent would have anticipated marshawn’s maneuver, but a backup on one of the first couple handoffs of the game cannot be blamed for a bad handoff.

i think what brian, and any objective observer, is trying to say, is that losman had a limited roll in this disaster. we were within a TD after a series a piece in the second half. already 24 pts on the defense, but still 24-17. this was followed up by a cards TD. after that we had to push the ball down the field, and it didnt go very well.

i leave this game a lot less worried about our backup qb than i do about our starting defensive unit and starting o-line. pathetic performances there, much more so than out of a guy coming off the bench and trying to put up 41 pts.

by jmorris0823 on Oct 5, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

perhaps

but why do we have to apologize for Losman all the time? Our defense was at fault yes, but would you not agree that part of the reason the Cards had so much time of possession was not only that our pass defense was atrocious but that our offense could not sustain drives or hold onto the ball for extended periods? And isn’t this a strong indication of the importance of Edwards to this offense?

Why does it all have to be the defenses fault? Our offense was atrocious as well. I think this game was a bigger indication of the value starters like Edwards and McGee have to this team more than a sign of our defensive weakness. I posted this week about a potential shootout because I think we all knew that the Cardinals offense was going to impose its will, our offense should be able to respond to that pressure and put up points rather than take sacks and turn the ball over.

In fact, I would wager that Fowler and Peters performances had a major impact on the outcome of the game, that doesn’t excuse Losman but the play of those two and our run blocking worry me far more than a defense that struggled against a top 3 NFL offense.

To not talk about Losman is silly, obviously he is not our starter but we have no idea the seriousness of Edwards concussion so it is a very valid topic of discussion.

Nobody is saying the loss is totally JP's fault, but he did have a big part in it.

If you don’t agree, that is fine. I have seen our Defense play better this season. I have seen our Offense play better this season. But, JP plays just like he did today most every time he plays. If you had to bet your life on who would play better vs the Chargers, would you pick JP?

I don't agree

4 turnovers lost the game for us. I tpiled up from when Trent went down and the game was nearly last with that first fumble.

Then we look good for a while, then another fumble by Royal. No JP, but still, a turnover that lead to opposition points, and negating our rhythm to continue.

Then JP fumbles again…and after that I didn’t even see the int whenver that happened.

But frankly, JP does not get the ball away fast enough. It is my opinion he was the major cause for our loss. If they offense is successful, than it keeps the oppoisiton off the field, and then we could have at least taken it down to the final moments. We could have won a shootout with Trent in there, but not with JP…he will make mistakes against good teams that cost us wins.
If Trent stays in there it would have been like the BUF-SF game of like ’92 or ’91 where we 31-28 with both offenses kicking ass and no punts. Maybe not wuite like that, but we could have won, and a poor showing by the D would have been chalked up to going against a strong offense, which Arizona has.
Even though we let some big runs go, we kept their run game mostly in check yards wise, and had our offense been up to snuff from the get go, which it could have, had we not had the turnovers. Even if we would have went 3 and out, at least it gives you field position. We unraveled, and we will come back strong with a healthy Edwards against the Chargers.

3 of the 4 turnovers came after the score was 31-17. Turnovers did not lose the game for us today. A defense that couldn’t get off the field and an offense that couldn’t keep up sure did though….The turnovers ended any hope of a miracle comeback, but we were well on our way to losing by the time the last 3 TO’s came…

Losman’s turnovers came largely in garbage time, when the game was all but over. (Of course, it was all but over in the third quarter…)

We don’t win that game with Trent Edwards at the helm, either – our defense did nothing. Losman made a couple of plays offensively; the same can’t be said for the defense. Ergo, blame to the defense.

Still don't agree with either of you

That first dumb turnover spelled doom, and no matter what, Trent in there gives us a better chance to win. To Kurupt: Even at 31-17 in the 3rd, two TDs and you’re in it. I am not saying the defense played well at all, but an offense that is methodical and effective, takes away from and changes the Cards gameplan

YEs

but you said the 4 turnovers lost the game for us. Considering we had already allowed 31 points by the time those turnovers started flowing, I think that point is a bit overblown.

Well of course having Trent in there gives us a better chance to win. Nobody’s debating that! :)

The first dumb turnover was the line’s fault, FYI; there was an unblocked interior lineman that absolutely blew up the play.

O-Line

The Oline really has sucked all season long. What is going on, I keep telling myself that they will gell and get better but it seems far from it, they will have given up more sacks by the time they have played 8 games this season then they had all of last season. And waht was up with the defense i cant continue im out

Injuries and Turnovers

After we get over the emotional aspect of this loss, I think we will be able to look at these things objectively,

Defensively, I know they gave up 41 but they didn’t play that bad. They knew they had to take away the run which they did a decent job of. The Cards averaged only 3.6 yds per carry and most of the yardage came on only a handful of plays. If you take away 4 carries that total 57 yds. they gave up less than 2yds a carry on 30 CARRIES!! I know you can’t do that but….Pretty good defense for even the best group.

As for the pass, without McGee, their lockdown corner, and then losing Ko in the first half they wanted to keep evrything in front of them and not have there young untested corner backs one on one against this team, which they did. Warner completed 34 passes for only a 6 yd avg. This is a team that avg. over 10 yds. an ATTEMPT before this game, AB was obviously not there only weapon.

Keeping everything in front of you means that you don’t blitz much. Even on the plays that looked like a blitz you would see a DE down field attempting to cover a reciever or his zone area. This allowed CW and Ariz. to always have a 4 – 5 or even 4 —6 man advantage in pass blocking. Not an excuse because we could have done a better job getting in his face but the turnovers and inability to get off the field seemed to affect them. On another positive note the tackling was great in this game even with being on the field all that time they didn’t miss too many tackles, it was there best one yet.

As for offense, I think this performance by JP will erase any doubt, that there might have been, that TE is the man in Buffalo. JP once again showed his happy feet and decision making or lack thereof. There is no doubt he has a strong arm and…… This was, hopefully, his only audition for a job next year. Would you sign him??? There is no question that the offensive line played bad today, but JP didn’t do anybody any favors and with being in the hole they were they had to abondon the run so Ariz. was able to egt pressure.

If there was ever such a thing as a good loss this was it. There isn’t anyone on this site that wouldn’t have been tickled pink with a 4-1 record going into the bye week; with the one loss being a road loss and an out of conference game. With a week off they will get healthy and get ready for the rest of the season.

Well, in many ways Trent covers for the Oline when they are off slightly

He is so quick in his reads and especially in his release, it really is one of the fastest I’ve seen in a while, not saying the ball is amissle in flight, but from the time he makes a decision and then throws its one of the quickest.

I think this actually covers up for the Oline when they are playing poorly. Which sadly means they have to be playing horrendously when Trent is getting clocked by pass rushers. JP does not have the same skill set and it seem Turk has pushed his chips as far as pass blocking, alignments and play style to Trent’s quick release, and JP just can’t do it. We need Trent back badly, out of anyone hurt, he is most critical.

Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....

Sorry, but I can't agree

The Cards did whatever they wanted. Your stat analysis makes me laugh. If you take away this run….. yeah, and if my grandmother had balls she would be my grandfather….the reality is she doesn’t!!!! WE WERE COMPLETELY DOMINATED ON OFFENSE, DEFENSE, AND COACHING!!!!

Did anyone notice the cutback runs seemed to be on Ellison’s side?

by Joe P. on Oct 6, 2008 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Glad to hear that about your grandmother...

Because that would just suck. I state pretty clearly in my post that you can’t do that, but if you take your finger off the trigger for a minute you would objectively see what this game turned out to be for the Bills.
Going into it they were down there best CB and there 2nd or 3rd best WR then lost there QB and FS on the road, a nonconference opponent, chnaging two time zones for the second consecutive week.
No one thought they were going 16 -0. Relax its a long year….

Silver lining...

It is generally accepted principle that in life, you learn more from your failures than your successes. Apparently, the past two losing seasons didn’t provide enough “education” to avoid losing in ’08. And who thought they would go 18-0 anyway? As much as the team echoed Jaurons controlled confidence, I got the sense that they were taking the positive vibes a bit too seriously. Sometimes a real a**kicking can do wonders to keep you hungry and focused on bringing your A game.

These Bills may have turned a corner, but they are still remarkably similar to last years losing team. The Arizona game looked like it could have been played in ‘07: quarterback knocked out of the game; inability to get off the field on third-downs; inconsistent pressure on the opposing QB; turnovers; the list goes on and on…and I’m not even including the lack of sustained drives by the Bills O.

On the bright side, if you’re going to lose, better to have it happen to a team outside of your conference. The Bills still have a leg up on the Pats. Besides we (and hopefully the coaches/FO) learned much about the team in the loss:

  • They’re not as good as people gave them credit for, but they’re definitely not as bad as they performed at Arizona.
  • Trent Edwards is a big reason why this team has four wins. Isn’t it nice to be able to say that about your QB?
  • The case for JP is officially closed; while he didn’t stink up the joint (at least not much more than the Bills defensive backfield), he showed that he is utterly incapable of carrying the team when needed.
  • The Bills big offensive line, plays like midgets at times; the Hogs or Electric Company they are not (notwithstanding the weak link at center).
  • Officially add the Schoebel-lite to the Kelsay/Denny party for “ineffective, but they try real hard” DE’s.

This team is still capable of churning out 10+ wins (with Edwards that is); the San Diego game in two weeks will likely be the barometer.
