Losman played like Losman
Today's performance is the exact reason why JP Losman was benched last year and should become a FA at the end of the season. He is TERRIBLE and I've said it since day 1!
Yes...I will give it to him that he had a very nice play to L. Evans and they have good chemistry together; but besides that one play he is pathetic. He held onto the ball way too long, took too many sacks, and of course had a few turnovers like he usually does.
I was really hoping to see Hamdem put in the game. True, we don't know what he has to offer in a regular season game but I'm sure he can't be any worse then Losman.

That’s what you get with Losman….a long ball here and there, along with holding the ball too long, making dumb passes and not being able to read a D. We really need Trent back….

I wonder how many people still think JP
is the best backup in the league. His trade value is officially 0. I posted this summer that we should trade JP for whatever we could get for him. Then draft a young QB, like Eric Ainge, who was available late. And, wait for Chris Simms to be released, which he was. If Trent Edwards is out for an extended period, or God forbid becomes Trent Green, who would you rather have under center. JP, Simms, or even Ainge?

cough cough cough, Simms is officially availble as of right now
He was released on Fri by the Titans so they could sign a back up kicker in case their punter couldn’t play this Sunday. He is available if the Bills decide they can’t win with JP.

Hopefully Trent will be good to go come the Chargers game with an extra week of rest. If we have to start Losman for an extended period of time this promosing season is worthless because he will run it into the ground.
Though I trust Turk calling the plays…I don’t trust JP running them.

Exactly
We need someone with Trent’s abiltiies running this O, it is not suited at all for Losman’s strengths.

wah
the losman debacle is in the past. that’s what you took out of this game? that losman isnt our starter? way to dig deep.
how about the defense getting run over? the o-line looking brutal again?
regardless, 4-1 has never felt so good. excited for the bye week, get healthy, and hopefully have mcgee and edwards out there for a statement win at home against sd.

I am not willing to lay all the blame
at Losman’s feet. The O-line played terrible and, yes, JP did make his usual mistakes. But he moved the ball here and there. The Royal fumble, the Jenkins offside, all lead to this dismal game.
The blame can be spread around.

Agreed, but
would you feel better if the Bills Def played well and JP lost us the game with his fumbles, sacks, and INTs? Because if we play a playoff caliber team with JP under center, that will most likely be the result!

For the love of God. This loss was MUCH bigger than Losman, folks, and frankly it’s a bit ridiculous that this thread exists at all.
We need Trent Edwards. Very few people like Losman. I get that. But… does it really need to be said AGAIN?!

Yes Brian, I think it does...
The team mishandled it’s back-up QB situation. They could have gotten some value for Losman in a trade, and they could have tried to get a back-up who fits in with Schonet’s philosophy…

A. That’s very, very debatable.
B. It’s ridiculous to second-guess every little thing the franchise has or hasn’t done.
Seriously… let’s talk about the defensive “effort”, or the turnovers, or the fact that the Cardinals are a really good team. Losman should be on the back burner, but he’s not, and it’s ridiculous.

He is just the most visible target Brian
The D needs to be looked at seriously and NOT just from a perssonal standpoint. Yes McGee was out, and the rest of the D players didn’t step up, in fact they came out flat and scared after Trent was lost for the game, I swear I saw “OH CRAP” looks on a number of them in the 1st quarter.
The big issue was Fewell’s lack of adjustment DURING the game to the looks being used by the Cards. I saw several times where the Cards had either 3 WRs and a TE all split out and we were trying to use 2 CBs, 2 Safeties and 1-2 LBs trying to stop them. This means Fewell wasn’t paying attention or has irrational belief that LBs can keep up with WRs on the slant or quick in. I advocated before that the Bills should just run base Nickel the whole game and use Youbuty as the 3rd LBer in those situations due to his tackling skills.
Also our lack of pass rush forced us to pull LBs from coverage later in the game and that exposed the DBs even more. We do need to resolve how to get pressure with 4 DL, maybe use the Giants 4 DEs alignment on occassion to get some pressure, because we can’t rely on the Blitz to do it if McGee isn’t around to shadow the opponents #1 WR.

The 4 DE's alignment isn't going to help us
If none of these guys have any pass rush ability, Schobel included, we aren’t getting a rush no matter how we line them up. The only way we’ve gotten to the QB and will get to the QB in the future is by blitzing. Of course, we can’t do that if we plan to play the CB’s off the line so much all the time. Another problem is that even when we rush 4 and get no pressure, there are still a ton of gaps in the D, especially over the middle. Our LB’s and safeties have to start making some plays in the passing game.

Definitely has to try something else
anything else. But I can’t envision any scenario where rushing 4 gets us consistent pressure. Not with our personnel…I’d like to see more of Mitchell off the edge though

My last comments on this for today....
Come one BG – you know it’s not debatable. There were plenty of rumors out there where he could have been had for a fourth round pick.
And, it’s not ridiculous to second guess the little things. It’s the little things that count….
Am I grumpy about today’s loss? Yes I am. I do agree completely that today was about the defense geting exposed. And, the Zona football team is a good team. But make no mistake about it, a back-up QB who has the skills to fit Schonert’s mind set would have been better for us than JP. Losman is just not a good fit here, and that should have been addressed prior to this season…

Seriously dude
there were no rumors or offers of 4th round picks for Losman. If someone had offered that, I’m sure it would have been scooped up immediately.
If there’s something to gripe about it’s the pathetic pass rush that we’ve had for numerous years now and the continued poor play of the OL. Those are areas that shouldn’t be giving us such poor play with all the $$$ invested in them. I’m not mad that Losman is our backup, I’m mad that our lines have been so bad for so long.

Yes there were..
And for the record, I scold myself for posting again on a topic I said I wouldn’t….
Yes – there were trade offers for Losman. At the time, the Bills were over-valuing him, which was/is silly given his contract status. Again, as with Alexi Zhitnik and Miro Satan (sorry for the reference to you non Sabre fans), I say try to get something for nothing. Get something for Losman while you can, and they didn’t. They tried to fit a square peg in a round hole for a back-up QB. Why would you do that? Give Trent a guy he can rely on for help – not a guy who may very well have “Billy Jo Hobert’ed” this game.
As to the line play, I agree with most of your sentiments. I didn’t think the DTs played well today. I was adamant that improved play at that spot this year would help out the DEs. Maybe they’re not helping. Do you know the breakdown on the DTs play? I don’t think I saw Stroud out there much..

I don't speak hockey
so that pretty much went in one ear, out the other….
Anyways, I don’t remember a single solid offer for Losman or anything near a 4th rounder. There was a lot of discussion about hoping for a 4th or 5th, but there was very little interest mentioned any where. I don’t think the Bills overvalued him, I think Bills fans overvalued him. The rest of the league has seen the guy bumble his way through his 5th season now, not improving and showing the same stupid mistakes each time he takes the field. There wasn’t a market for him.

I just find it crazy how the team reverts to crap, crap, bomb to Lee Evans, crap with Losman in there, with the same talent that Edwards has led thus far. I know that he’s not the main concern, it just floors me how much the team regressed with him in there.
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

Losman
Just curious – if any of the “Losman is the best back-up for us” supporters could wind back the time and get a decent pick for him, would you finally do it?
I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again – he’s not a good QB. I love what he did for the city of Buffalo, but he should have been moved for a pick.
If you have an offensive system in place, and it’s tailored around the strengths of a QB, why would you have a back-up QB with almost complete opposite strengths? It doesn’t make sense. Look at the monkey….

Losman had 101+ QB rating
what more do want in a backup QB. yes he had an int, probably a little miscomunication with Evans and he had pressure on him when he threw it, of course he had pressure on him all day thanks to a pathetic effort by the O line. There is no way anybody could rationally blame this loss on Losman.

ugh
this is pathetic. our defense gets blown up for 41 pts, our o-line looks terrible, and people are debating whether we shouldve brought in a better backup quarterback? really? seriously? there isnt a backup in the NFL that could have been expected to put up 41 pts today with the way the line played, especially trying to put up numbers without having the time to develop a running game.
lets concentrate on not imploding on defense and getting edwards back healthy against SD in two weeks.

Reality
The reality of the situation is that the offense performed almost exactly the same way with Losman I am afraid to tell you. The offense contributed 2 TD’s. Which by my count would be 2 against Seattle, 2 against Jax, 2 against the Rams and 3 against Oakland.
How is this game any different?
They stopped running the ball which hurt them the most – i know that we were down by a lot of points, but the RUN game hurt the offense even more. Hold the ball longer – defense gets a rest – and their “O” tends to get out of sync while they are on the bench.
check out Lynch’s carries – 4.1 yd average – not enough carries. 13 carries?
we control the clock with the run, slow them down and we have a chance – Edwards would not change the fact that our D got slaughtered.

I don’t see how running it more would have solved anything….The Cards scored on every possession in the first half and 7 of their first 8 drives overall. Our D simply couldn’t stop them and get off the field. We had 14 points in the first half and were still down 10 at the half. That’s all on the D right there. We basically had to abandon the run in the 2nd half since we got down so much.

got away from it too early
that was the reason. even when your down by 14 pts. its still the first half. run the ball – keep running it. they got away from their game plan. lynch should have 10 runs in the first half at least.

section from TMQ - espn
when the Redskins fell behind 14-0 to the Eagles in the first quarter, Zorn didn’t go pass-wacky, but stuck with a run-based game plan, slowly crawling back and frustrating Donovan McNabb by keeping him off the field. After the first quarter ended with Philadelphia ahead 14-0, for the remainder of the contest, Washington outrushed Philadelphia 180 yards to 20.
we abandoned the run way to early – probably would not of won us the game. but if you think about it – less pass attempts – less sacks and picks.
our coaches got nervous, got out of their game plan

never even tried. 13 carries? look at the vikings. adrian peterson had 32yds on 21 carries. they didn’t run it well either……still won the game after being completely out played.
