Bills lay groundwork for better run game : The Buffalo News
Looks like the defenders aren't the only ones looking for self-improvement during the bye week. Buffalo is concentrating on bettering themselves in the rushing department, as well; Langston Walker calls the line a "work in progress".

I would hope they are concentrating on improvement. They’ve been horrendous thus far.
If we don’t start seeing improvement after the bye week, does anyone really think it’ll come this year?? They’ve got the time to work on things this week, and they’ll have been together for well over a month by the SD game. It’s time to start playing well…

“Horrendous” is a bit strong, K. Bad, yes, but it’s not like our offense isn’t much better than it was last year.

horrendous blocking, for the most part yes….especially in the run game….pass blocking has been ok (bad in the first half of games, better in the second, except the AZ game). The O has improved in spite of the play of the OL….

this is a good time to work on it
with Trent unable to practice they should be focusing almost exclusively on shoring up the run blocking and running schemes. When he is able to return Trent will find himself with a much more capable offense with which to work.

But
the only reason that the offence has improved is that TE has been able to get the ball out fast. I have to agree that the run offense has been horrendous when Lynch can’t get close to 100 yards the way he runs thats beyond bad!

83 rushing yards isn’t close to 100 yards?

Glad the run blocking’s finally being recognized as an issue. Let’s hope it gets fixed fairly quickly.

Run blocking is bad, pass blocking is livable with the QB we got
Thanks to Trents quick decision making our Oline while playing sub-par pass blocking compared to last year its not as big of an issue as our run blocking.
The run blocking is beyond horrible Brian. Lynch and Freddy are really getting alot of those yards despite facing 1-3 guys in the backfield or at the line on a very regular basis. I know the adage is the RB has to beat one man on every run play, but were asking our guys to beat 3-4 guys each time it seems. With a line of fat boys like we have, we should ONLY have to lean on them for 3 quarters before seeing the RBs getting huge holes. This is where having a very bad run blocker like Fowler is hurting us, we pull alot to get the RBs some extra blocking play side, because we can’t rely on Fowler to either hold his man, or to make it to the second level and actually HIT the LB and keep him from flowing to the ball.
Until Fowler is replaced for a real Center, we will continue to see a temporary patches applied to the Run blocking scheme in attempt to cover up his weaknesses.

You’re not getting an argument from me about Fowler, but he seems to be the only one y’all ever bring up, along with Peters. What about Dock, Butler and Langston? Don’t they deserve to be called out individually as well? It doesn’t have to always be Fowler, because it gets a little repetitive. ( :) )
I think these guys will be fine – yes, all five of them – if they start playing through to the whistle, as Kugler alludes to in the article. But still… Alex Mack is already my favorite draft prospect.

Dockery has been good. I don’t really recall seeing his many dancing with Lynch in the backfield much this year. I also don’t remember him allowing any sacks either.
Peters has been better than it seems too. A handful of plays have really skewed everyone’s view on his play this year, but I think he’s been rather solid in the run game. Take away those plays where he was beaten badly against a pass rusher, and he’s been pretty solid in protection as well. Of course, those plays where he was torched turned into disasters, which we can’t have. Overall, I don’t think he’s been as brutal as we’ve all mentioned.
I havent’ been too impressed with Butler this season. He’s allowed some pressure and sacks up the middle. He’s also been pushed around in the run game some. Of course, this could be due to Fowler being so weak and Butler needing to help him out some. I wonder how good he could be with a solid Center next to him where he can concentrate on blocking his guy only??
Walker has been bad, IMO. He shouldn’t be getting beat by pass rushers on the right side like he has. He’s not usually facing the team’s best rusher, so it’s a bit concerning. Unfortunately, we all forget that he the majority of his time in the preseason at LT and is just now getting back into it at RT. That doesn’t excuse some missed blocks in the run game, although I don’t understand why he has been pulling as much as he has. I wonder if that’s also being done to cover for Fowler?
Fowler has been the weakest link, and his position is one where if he screws up, the whole play screws up. If Peters screws up and the DE gets by him, he can either push him out of the way, or hope the QB can step up in the pocket. Fowler gets shoved into the backfield, into ballcarriers and allows the pocket to collapse at times, as well. That’s killer.
I think Peters and Walker will improve, hopefully Butler too, but I don’t see any hope for Fowler. It’s been this way since he’s been here.
Mack would be nice, though a Center in the 1st round is a bit of reach to me, unless it’s really late. I think the kid from Arkansas, Luigs, will be a good Center too, and is probably a 2nd rounder. Maybe we can address our DE problem in round 1 with the C in round 2….Either way, we need to get a young, stud center ASAP!!!!

As for the other lineman
Dock, has been solid if unspectacular, which is what I’ve come to expect from him, and honestly I can live with it since he seems to average out to one great play a game, one bad play a game, and the rest of the time he does his job.
Walker has been very inconsistent again this year, he seems to be reverting to the Walker of the Raiders mode as far as pass pro is concerned. As K alluded too, maybe this is due to swapping spots back and forth but its a worriesome state.
Butler has been surprisingly bad this year compared to last year. He has been getting beat up in the run game and the pass plays as well. As K noted, it could be due to the fact that out of all the lineman he assists on Fowler’s blocking a lot, and this may be bringing his whole game down, but he looks uncharecteristicly weak in run strength this year.
Peters, well, with him he gets a buy till the San Diego game, at tha point he will have been in town 6 weeks, and I will be expecting to see better play from him. San Diego will be down to one true pass rushing LBer and if Peters struggles against their left overs, he can kiss any contract extension good bye till after the 2010 season.
If he does firm up, then we have a chance as an offense to get the ground game rolling as long as Fowler at least gets into the way of someone on the defense. But since Folwer is suppossed to be a better pass blocker than run blocker, its disturbing to see him getting blown into the backfield on pass plays. I am starting to wonder the how and why our Oline can’t seem to keep leverage and their bulk down closer to the ground to negate the bull rush, they seem to be standing up to straight to much. Put them on a diet Kugler!
