A month ago Trent Edwards was an MVP candidate. Monday night he was a candidate to be benched for J.P. Losman. Not that the Bills would have ever done that. But they had to consider it.

In an ideal world....
The Bills would put Edwards in the game whenever the defense blitzed and Losman in whenever the defense was going to drop into coverage. Edwards is deadly against the blitz while Losman gets rattled. Edwards can’t figure out 7 man coverage schemes while Losman can strong arm balls into places.
Of course, if I was a defensive coordinator I’d tell my guys to blitz whenever they saw #7 on the field and drop into coverage whenever they saw #5.

I know they wouldn't actually do it
But that definitely had to cross someone’s mind on the coaching staff after Edwards threw 3 INTs in the first 4 possessions.

Totally agree. I’m sure they at least thought about pulling him and hoped that Losman gave them a spark. Jauron might have even had a score in mind after the third pick where if Buffalo was down X points at halftime he would let JP play the second half.

I don't think so...
You’d have to believe Losman could do something Edwards can’t-or at least something that would help. Juron is keenly aware of the turmoil caused by a QB Controversy since he started here in Buffalo with one-reintroducing that would be a terrible idea-while he’s not the brightest crayon in the box these days, he’s not that stupid.
Plus it would go completely against his even-keel attitude.

I can guarantee you that it did not. Losman isn’t held in high regard here by any stretch of the imagination.

lets not even raise this issue
it is dead. Losman is not our answer. Trent is.
Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

Losman is not the answer
But I’m not sure Trent is. I stand by my opinion from last season that Trent Edwards would not amount to a good QB and we would be starting over in three seasons.

dont give up on him so soon
well i guess your not giving up if you never believed in him but just like Edwards, Ryan and Flacco will go through tough spots in their development. I just want Reed back for him

Reed
I do agree that he is probably the most important player for this offense. It’s not that I dislike Edwards I just don’t see him ever being the guy so to speak.

I find it ridiculous that “traditional media” even bring it up.

Situations in which losman will play:
This list might not be perfect, but I think I covered the most likely cases
Edwards is injured
Edwards has a personal issue and must miss the game
Edwards is suspended
Edwards is killed
It’s a blowout and we don’t want to get Edwards injured
We suffer so many injuries at another position that we need to get an extra body on the field
For a team other than the Bills

This is what, game 18 for Trent Edwards?
How did Peyton Manning look at game 18? or Eli Manning? or “fill in the blank of awesome QB.” Or, fill in the blank of “reasonably good QB.”
get the kid a line, stop calling pass after pass and he’ll do better. Thow him a TE or a 2nd WR and he’ll do better than that-I think Josh Reed was secretly holding this team together from the two spot.

you may be right
about Josh Reed. Have we missed him or what!

Reed
Was (believe it or not ) a Veteran and (believe it or not) a reliable WR. He runs good routes and (now) has good hands.
He’s the kind of guy that gets open every now and then under a Tampa 2 and keeps the other team from tripple teaming Lee Evans.
Evans, Reed and (Parrish/Hardy/Johnson) works a lot better than what we have now.

thank you sir
as bad as it sounds, I’ve started to like Kawika more during this losing streak. He never gives up and plays hard. Can’t say that about the entire team. They are young and hopefully he sticks around a while to teach these guys

Cool heads are required
I was at the game last night and like everyone I was not a happy camper! Clearly Turk does not read these blogs because he came out in the shotgun on the first play of the game! Nothing has change with the whole formations issue and predictability issues.
Obvious negatives:
1) Trent had the worse game of his career. Any other QB would have been an improvement. I would have definitely pulled him in favor of JP after the 3rd INT but just for this game. I do not buy into any theory that you can’t pull your starting QB when he is clearly rattled and struggling monumentally. Trent is an extremely smart kid and he was the first to admit that his play really sucked last night. I think pulling him would have provided him a chance to gather his thoughts and provide him with some perspective. The purpose of the game is to WIN not to stroke egos! Edwards could have been re-inserted later in the game, after having taking the time to reflect a bit. Even if JP would have done well, I think Edwards would still be the started the following week.
2) Turk was as predictable and as boring as usual. When the run game got going he should have called more play-action plays. He did only two (by my count) and that clearly is not enough. He ran three draw plays to Jackson in a row (Left, Right, Left) and although it worked well at first by the third time it became predictable and juvenile. Turk is a rookie and it clearly shows in his mistakes and lack of ability to adjust during the course of a game.
3) Again, Dick Jauron found several ways of screwing things up by totally and utterly mismanaging time-outs. C’mon when you are 1st and one you certainly do not give the opposing team a chance to catch their breath you pounce!! Instead DJ takes a timeout. On another play, on defense on 3rd and 10 we take a timeout??? How can this situation be confusing enough to scrap a time-out? When your QB is struggling the way Trent was, you need to be able make the call and pull him without being afraid of what people think. As Head Coach you are not there to be their friend, you are there to manage games and make whatever adjustments necessary in order to get away with a “W”
Very positive things
1) The run game got going!!
2) The Oline did a very good job at run-blocking as well as providing Trent with time.
3) McKelvin had a huge game! I would say a breakout game for him
4) They finally realized that Steve Johnson is playing well enough to deserve more chances and again he did well when given the chance last night
5) Marcous Stroud is back!!
6) Mitchell was an animal last night!! He was flying around everywhere!!
7) Fewel called a very good game (with a few exceptions)
As much as it pains me to admit that the season is practically over at this point, I still prefer to take the positives out of this game.

I disagree about pulling Edwards
He was not physically hurt. JP is not the answer. Sit him on the bench to think about what? The fact he has no confidence in himself? He had plenty of time to think about it while the defense was on the field. And sitting on the bench longer than that is going to help how? Improve his confidence for the next game? Bullshit!!!! You do exactly what Jauron did. Tell him you are the QB of this team, son. Get your ass out there and play like it. Maybe if JP had not been mishandled, he might have developed or at least we would have found out he sucked sooner.

How does pulling him, destroy him?
It is common in other sports to pull someone who is struggling big time. Look in hockey, there is no hesitation to pull a goalie when he is struggling, no hesitation to pull a pitcher when he is struggling. In both cases it is not an indication that the player has lost the starting status.. just for one game in order to manage the game and make sure the team doesn’t lose.
Joe, I never said that JP is the solution and I sure as hell am not suggesting that Trent is no longer the Starter. I still think that he can be a great QB see Interesting stats regarding the great ones
I am just suggesting that these guys are highly paid athletes not babies and the purpose of the game is to WIN. Jauron’s job is to make sure we win the ball game. Specifically yesterday, keeping Edwards in the game did not serve much purpose, he struggled the whole game. I would have said the same thing for any other position in which we have the luxury to put in a qualified backup. If Peters would have let in 5 sacks in the first quarter maybe you change him… If Marshawn fumbles the ball 4 times in the first quarter obviously to think of sitting him in favor of Jackson. The goal is to win the game, it’s not a working practice it’s for real, it’s a game and it’s the difference between making the playoffs or not.

Good points keysh67
But I think the QB position is very unique in sports. A goalie, starting pitcher, or RB is not the leader of the offense. A good QB is a field General in every sense of the word. Custer’s men followed him to their death. That doesn’t make him a good General, but his men believed in him and were willing to follow him. If you start pulling a QB when he struggles, it sets a precedence. Then, it is open for discussion how badly he has to play before he is yanked. Is it 3 INTs? How about 2 INTs and a fumble? You get the idea. The QB starts looking over his shoulder after every mistake and becomes …well….Edwards-like…. thinking to much, tentative, and afraid to take chances. By keeping him in the game, you say to him….Work it out kid because it is your job no matter what!!! Not pulling him may have cost us the season, I would say there were many other factors in play, but if he is the QB of the future it was worth it. Lets face it…..this ship hit the ice berg in AZ and has been slowly taking on water ever since.

I see you point
And I guess the last thing you want is a QB that takes himself out of the game like Vince Young tried to do… And probably Turk did the next best thing by getting him to throw to Lynch in the flats, getting lynch to the outside in some space is like running the ball, it was safe given Trent’s frame of mind.
I think you when you go 1-5 in your last 6 games its more than a slow leak. But we’re Bills fans so, we’re used to it!

No, I want a QB that will not leave the field unless he needs to be carried off.
The coach does need to decide when it is time to pull a QB. In this case, I think Jauron made the right one. In a perfect world, Edwards throws the winning TD to Evans on the last drive :-)

I’m starting to get tired of hearing Edwards blame the game on himself…..He has not taken the first to correct his failure’s. He is not the same since his injury, what to do?
Maybe sitting him a game will help, seeing competition might influence him. One thing for sure the last 4 games have not been good for him
