Too many NFL teams fall into the trap of impatience. They look for the quick fix and the instant gratification of a playoff appearance. Sometimes, in the Browns' case last season and the Bills' case from earlier this season, some surprising early success can lead to unreasonable expectations. You almost expect another young, rebuilding team from a hungry small market -- think the Kansas City Chiefs -- to go through a similar situation next season.
Patience a needed virtue for young Browns, Bills - SportingNews.com. Very fitting reminder from SN's Vinnie Iyer.

Good read
I am more willing to be patient with young players than old coaches.

Whaaa
How come Miami and Jet fans get to enjoy their teams and we have to always be patient? I want candy too!

Because of the way the teams were built. Miami and the Jets have vets at QB. Pennington and Favre have been there.

And so they are in trouble
right when we’ll be coming into our potential. Which means our defense will be feasting on young, inexperienced QBs

I’ve been overly optimistic in my life this week to compensate for Monday. I think loved ones are starting to get worried, they know this is not my normal reaction to a loss like that.

Jets fans won’t be enjoying their team next year when they’re in salary cap hell. Especially after they go one and done in the playoffs this year (at best).

Yeah – good article. Gives some perspective on our place in the AFC East
Bills fans should keep in mind that it’s still better to beat up on “bad” teams than it is to be one. The bigger wins will come in time….Too many NFL teams fall into the trap of impatience. They look for the quick fix and the instant gratification of a playoff appearance.
“Instant gratification” pretty much sums up the Jets-Favre thing. I agree, tm, about the Jets and Miami although in fairness I think Miami is building more for long term success (Damn you Parcells! Is it his mission in life to help our division opponents and mess with the Bills, or is he coming here next?). But the Jets are definitely in salary-cap hell and saddled with a QB that qualifies for AARP discounts.
Patience is the key but the quick turn-around of the Jets and Miami is still irksome.

I agree with the message
Clearly we let the 4 wins in the beginning of the season pump up our hopes to unreasonable expectations. I fully agree that we need to realize that we are building something special and that we need to be a bit more patient.
That being said, I don’t know how that correlates to keeping Jauron around, not sure that he is the reason why we drafted Lynch/Edwards/Poz or signed Mitchell or Stroud in the off season. He could be the reason why we still have Royal/Fowler in the mix, when both positions were available in the draft. I know that DJ seems like a nice guy and he seems to be able to keep the team from being too down on themselves but is he really a good coach? He seems totally unable to instill the sense of urgency or inject passion into our guys. I would like to see some emotion, some passion come out sometimes, show that it means something to you, you know what I mean..
When we go into battle, I feel very comfortable with the individual match ups but I never, ever feel that we have a shrewder coach than the other side, never! I am always worried that he might fall asleep. The way he blunders challenges and misuses timeouts is so frustrating. As the season progresses I am of the opinion that it is critical to get a coach that can get us to the next level, someone that understands a thing or two about smash mouth football and playing in the severe conditions of buffalo, someone that can show some passion. Mr Wilson should sell the team before he passes in order to get an owner that is fully committed to winning and not just getting by.

the only thing
that worries me is what dropping Jauron would do to the development of all of our young players. Remember what such overture has done to our young players in the past: completely stunted promising development.

don't worry about that
its not like anyother NFL team would want him.
we could hire him as a “continuity” coordinator
they make positions up in the NFL everyday. this would work

The way he blunders challenges and misuses timeouts is so frustrating.
I don’t like the way the team uses timeouts, either, but not all of that can be put on Jauron. My biggest pet peeve is when the offense can’t get out of the huddle and get the snap off in time to avoid a timeout. I HATE that, but that’s not Dick’s fault. That’s on Schonert/Edwards and communication.

Its almost like Schonert has never done this before.
by Zumone on Nov 19, 2008 10:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not the first time
Brian, if it were the first time then I would agree with you but it isn’t. The Head Coach must be on top of these things and get them fixed and he hasn’t so yes I agree it is more on Edwards/Schonert but Jauron should be fixing it one way or the other. I have been coaching for several years and I prepare for situations in order to be able to react quickly and take advantage of momentum & confusion. At a minimum being ready for it will force the opposing team into taking a timeout. But to actually be the team taking a time out in that situation when you’ve got them reeling and gasping for air, is just plain un-prepared!
Jauron seems like a really nice & calm person, which is great in some circumstances but in the overall picture he is quite mediocre at best. I think what we need in Buffalo is a proven winner that can teach this young team how to go out and get it done! Play aggressive & play to win – as opposed to playing wimpy and playing not to loose. Buffalo is one of the best venues, it is a hostile environment, with a tough climate and a great 12th player – there is no reason in the world to be playing wimpy.
by keysh67 on Nov 19, 2008 12:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
This isn’t necessarily a response to you, but a general question I’d like to pose to those who aren’t as comfortable with Jauron as I am…
Most of y’all want to replace Jauron with “a proven winner”. How many of those are there just floating around, exactly? Better yet, how many of them are there who would actually come to Buffalo? It’s not like we’ve got the option to dump the guy for Bill Belichick Jr. Don’t give me Schottenheimer or Cowher; Schottenheimer is done, and Cowher wouldn’t mesh well with Ralph Wilson.

what i want
is a coach that has the balls to win the game. play to win. thats what i want.
a coach with a hard nosed old school approach that won’t take crap from players and knows how to motivate.
a coach who is prepared on game day
a coach that reckognizes what their doing wrong and fixes it instead of trying the same thing over and over
a coach who is unpredictable
i’m not sure who that coach is. but ralph gets paid millions for his team….hire someone to find that guy…you got the $$!!!!

I think Marty isn't done yet
And I’d like to know why you think that Cowher wouldn’t mesh?
I also like Rex Ryan a lot. He’d credentials are great and I’ve been of the opinion that our team could easily be converted to a 3-4 scheme, which in my opinion is much better suited to stop the run. In our weather, an aggressive 3-4 is better.
On the Cowher meshing note.. I think that Mr Wilson should sell the team while he is still alive. I think that a big reason for our situation is the uncertainty. A new owner would automatically mean a renewed passion and hope. New ownership would surely want to add their say in the coaching & front office. Until Ralph sells the team, I guess calling for Jauron’s head is premature. Or another way of looking at it is if Ralph could actually go out and get a guy like Cowher, it would probably increase the value of the team and could help secure a local buyer.
by keysh67 on Nov 19, 2008 1:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No, Marty’s done. Trust me. You won’t see him coaching again.
Cowher would need to come in like Parcells went into Dallas – the #2 guy behind the owner. He’d need GM control as well as head coaching duties. He’s not going to get that out of Ralph Wilson.

Impatience? Quick fix? Unreasonable expectations? Seriously?
From a fanbase and organizational standpoint, we have been waiting 8 years (I think I can start saying 9 years now). We are now on our 3rd regime attempting to reach the playoffs. I’m not even concerned about a Super Bowl, contending in our conference, our even winning a playoff game. I’d just like to see a playoff game.
As a team, we are now in year 3 of the Jauron project. I see no real end in sight; in fact, I’m not sure we’ve even reached a milestone. Whitner made a playoff guarantee in the preseason (Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time.) Poz backs his guarantee. Several other players speak of the playoffs as the season goal. Hell, even the guarded, conservative Jauron indicated that playoffs were the ultimate goal. Not to mention their ridiculously easy schedule (outside of divisional games) and the fact the Tom Brady went down 8 minutes into the season to bring the high flying Patriots back to Earth. I would hardly call expecting playoffs this year “unreasonable.” It was unreasonable to think that at 5-1 the Bills would actually miss the playoffs.
I understand the main theory in the article and how it pertains to the Bills. Supposedly, the Bills are a good (certainly not great), young team with potential for the future. However, I’m beginning to wain on that point. Maybe they do. But they certainly haven’t shown that over the last quarter of the season.
Expecting “instant gratification” isn’t unreasonable. The Falcons have a first year coach and a rookie QB. The Ravens have a first year coach and a rookie QB. The Redskins have a first year coach and a third year QB. The Packers have a second year coach and a fourth year QB who started his first game this year. All these teams appear to show more promise than the Bills AND have a shot at the postseason this year. Meanwhile, the Bills continue to look no closer to the postseason than the previous year(s).

The chickens were counted, my friend. I’m saying that IN 2006, the Bills were 4-6 after their first 10 games, and then won 3 of their next 4 to get to 7-7. So with 2 games to play in 2006, the Bills were 7-7. They then proceeded to lose to Vince Young and the Titans at The Ralph in a game in which Robert Royal stepped out of bounds on an obvious scoring play and Rian Lindell (shocker!) missed a key field goal.

spot on
the problem lies of course with Ralph from the beginning. He hires losing head coaches or head coaches that never coached in the league then wonder why they fail. Just because your a good coordinator does not mean your a good head coach.
Then look at the front office. our scouting guys are no where near the bill polian or scott pioli’s of the world. it starts with Ralph.
And this article fails to realize your exact point “thatguy34”. how long do we have to sit through a rebuilding phase? this is 3 years of the ivy league dynamic duo that get worse every single year. fails in the spotlight. plays with no sense of urgency is completely unprepared for game day decisions. same old same old. i bought this record 10 years ago and its the same crap. we’ve been rebuilding since ’99. impatient??? i think not
the change needs to start from the top. after wilson passes if somehow (i don’t think we can) kelly can become an owner in ANY capactity and if it stays in buffalo (i don’t think it will) i beleive he would do whatever it takes to win. just like any fan would. ralph doesn’t care or doesn’t have the capacity to care anymore. lets hire a bunch of coordinators and losing coaches then wonder why our teams sucks. get someone in there that wants to win. at any cost…i’d take bellichick and his cheating ways at this point. at least it’d be fun to watch!

See Jeff Fisher Wiki page
If you want to calm yourselves down, go check out Jeff Fisher, coach of the Tennessee Titans wiki page. If you look at the first few years of his tenure, it is remarkably similar to Dick Jaurons first few years here. Remarkably similar 1-5, 7-9, 8-8, 8-8, 8-8. Look at even Bill Belichick’s career. We need to have patience. The absolute worst thing that could happen for the Bills future would be to fire Dick. He has on the job experience, knowledge of our personnel and organization that could translate to great success in the next couple of years. The chances of finding a new head coach that would be “The One” would be much less than 1%, where as DJ could very well find himself coaching a perennial ployoff contender if we just show patience.
