Edwards Calling out Schonert and Jauron?
I just got home from work to watch a press conference with Trent Edwards. Considering our recent discussion on how much blame should be placed on the coaching staff I couldn't help but down this quote from the conference. Oh boy...
When a reporter asked Trent if he is not trusting what he's seeing down the field and if that is the reason for his interceptions and turnovers recently Edwards responded as such:
"The hardest thing that is happening to me, this happened earlier in the season, its happened in the past couple of games, is that I'm preparing for defenses that we're not really getting on Sundays or Monday Nights. They didn't really bring the defense that we thought the Browns played against the Broncos, and that's what we're practicing out here on the practice field all week and then we're facing an entirely different defense. That's something I need to grow from and learn from."
Wow. If the team is pracitcing against looks they are not getting then something is seriously wrong. Trent has to make adjustments to whats happening on the field, as he acknowledged at the end of that statement, the coaches need to provide better insight if he's getting the wrong looks during practice. Thoughts??

RE: Thoughts
Sometimes you have to tip your hat to the defense. They aren’t going to do the same thing everytime. Trent is a young guy, opponents are smart to change things up and try to confuse him. You can’t blame the Bills coaches for getting Trent ready to face the Browns and the defense they have used the majority of the time, only to have the Browns do something completely new. The Bills coaches are then under more pressure to make the correct adjustments. I thought they did that pretty well Monday night.

good points all
but the one thing that worries me is that he said his being unprepared for defenses occurred more than once earlier in the year and during this losing streak. So the question has to be raised. Why isn’t our quarterback ready on game day? Is it his inability to adjust to game plans? Or is he not being properly prepared as a young QB during the week leading up to the game.

Lets also not forget that there was some trnover on the Bills offensive staff. McNally retired, Turk is a first time OC and Nathanial Hackett is the Quality Contrtol coach, which I believe is a new position for him as well. The coaching staff has some “young” bugs to grow out of also.

i don't
think he is calling out the coordinators. But what he is saying is that his timing with what he did in practice that week has no bearing on what then he needs to do in the game. But this goes back to who is dictating who here? It seems every week defenses are dictating to our offense what WE CAN OR CAN’T DO instead of the other way around.
Regardless though, it all comes back to running the ball effectively, early and often. And playing from a lead. The Bills need to have an opening TD drive, take the lead, impose their will and finish a game. It really is that simple. They have talent, and I’m sick of people calling for wholesale changes. You have to be patient in this league. THERE ARE A LOT OF MEDIOCRE TEAMS in this league, but the DIFFERENCE from becoming the GIANTS is not as big of a leap as you think if you give your coaching staff & QB time. This management has had its misses on player personnel but they also have made some very good draft picks and IMO did a ridiculously good job getting Stroud & Mitchell as they have been great fits for our defense. But they KEEP NEGLECTING our offense. We need more playmakers, and it has to be a PASS CATCHING TE.
I’ll digress….but it is all about giving Edwards time to develop his rapport with his WR’s against all coverages. In the NFL it is only 16 games a season, the kid only has 18-19 starts under his belt. This isn’t JP Losman here….This is a cerebral, tough, smart QB with all the physical tools. It will work out in the end. When Jauron was hired I said, Please, give him time….bring stability to this organization. We have that…no one wants to lose, but I plead to not abandon ship now….they will rally this season, have some meaningful games in december and as cliche as it is….next year is our year…..yikes i just said it

I agree with patience
But i don’t think we have to look to next year yet. We are still alive. If Rod Marinelli won’t quit w shouldn’t either

I don’t think he’s calling them out in any sense of the phrase. Defenses are pretty unorthodox defending our offense.

I don’t think they’re that unorthodox anymore, are they? They are unorthodox in the sense that the opposing team is not running what they have typically run in the week’s leading up to their game with the Bills. But the last three week’s we’ve seen the opposing D drop 7 or 8 in coverage and beg and plead the Bills to run (hey, I have something in common with the Bills’ opponents!)
Shouldn’t they expect to see these types of coverages until they show they are capable of moving the ball against it?

It’s been that way for 4 weeks, and it remains unorthodox until the Bills figure out how to beat it. :)

I wouldn’t call them unorthodox, but at the same time I totally understand how a rookie coordinator and second year QB have had trouble figuring them out. Think about how many coverage possibilities you have when you drop 8 players into coverage. The possible combinations between short, middle and deep zones are seemingly limitless. I’m sure the Browns had robber type plays where you have two players crossing each other in zone coverage ie: the middle linebacker goes to his left and plays the short left side of the field and the left outside linebacker works his way towards the middle of the field and covers a zone where the middle linebacker initially lined up. They must have mixed it up and had their cornerbacks in deep zones on cover 3 calls sometimes and in short zones on other plays. Their linebackers stayed deep in coverage A LOT and I think that is one of the things that Trent struggled with the most and something that teams havn’t been doing to the Bills at all lately. It’s hard for a QB to read an 8 man coverage scheme, even if he has been practicing it all week because there are so many possibilities.

I will tell you what I think
I think I hope Trent gets all this figured out soon because if I have to start hearing about JP I am going to puke.

In all complete seriousness, If it ever came to benching Trent due to poor play, I would rather see Hamdan then J.P., Hamdan will be on this team next year, and has more upside then J.P. at this point.

Amen, though everyone has consistently said I was mad for stating that before
If Trent must go the bench, let Hamdan do the dirty work, JP is gonzo next year, so why spend time on him if Trent gets injured again? But that is the only way I want to see Hamdan out there, ONLY ONLY ONLY if Trent goes down to injury again. At this point its sink or swim time with Trent, lets see if he can at least dog paddle or maybe we need to toss him some water wings.

I still think you are both crazy.
Why would I want to see JP in there if Trent gets hurt? because the Bills aren’t out of the playoffs yet and JP gives the team a better chance to win than Hamden does. Did you guys like the way Hamden looked in preseason or something? I thought he looked pretty mediocre at best.

Against the 0-10 Lions, no less. (Though I guess they were undefeated in the pre-season, or something like that. Probably because they were playing scrubs like Gibran Hamdan.)
Don’t get me wrong, I like Gibran. I just don’t think he’s a #2 QB in this league.

Exactly, if the team want to keep him around to be Trent’s buddy and as an insurance policy than that is fine, but if he is in this team’s long term plans (or short term) as a primary backup, than we are in trouble. If Trent goes down and it’s week 17 and the Bills are mathematically eliminated, then go ahead and throw Hamden in, but please don’t put him in if the games still matter.
by kaisertown on Nov 20, 2008 10:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I believe that Hamdan is better suited and is better prepared each and every week then J.P. is to be the QB of this team. Are there better QBs out there to be had as back-ups? Yes. But if you are giving me a choice of J.P. or Hamdan, then I’m taking Hamdan because I feel like he will make less mistakes and be better suited to make the heady play to help the Bills win. Losman has never proven that he can be dependable.

Right on, sireric
We should only have to put up with this play JP crap for two more weeks tops. Either Edwards starts to play better and we win some games, or after one more loss, even the biggest Kool-Aid drinkers will have to agree that the Bills are not making the playoffs. Then, I never have to hear about JP playing for the Bills again!!!!!

Then why didn't we draft one last year?
Oooohhhh….that is right, we needed ST players. I hope they are looking at bringing in a vet to back up Trent and drafting someone to groom. How nice would it be to actually let a QB sit on the bench for a year or two before he has to start.

I’ve never liked the idea of drafting a backup QB to a young guy. If Eli Manning had ever gotten hurt in New York, that team was going nowhere fast behind Jared Lorenzen.

I don't think he is calling out the coaches
One of the things they have been saying about Trent is he watches a lot of game film with Hamdan. He can see for himself what to prepare for that week against that defense. Just because a team brings a different defensive look week to week doesn’t mean a whole lot especially when the Browns had 11 days to gameplan the Bills. The Browns Thursday-Monday turnaround gave them extra days of practice and it was closer to a bye week (14 days) than a regular week (7 days). Just saying they had time to change their defense if they wanted to.
by MattRichWarren on Nov 19, 2008 6:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
The extra time the Browns had is a great point. I am sure that they added some new looks that they havn’t used all week. It would take quite the coaching staff to prepare for some new plays that the other team hasn’t even used yet.

I dont believe anyone has “turned” on anyone, or that there is “calling out” going on.

Just a thought...
I’ve been hearing the same thing now for 4 consecutive weeks… That Trent is having difficulty reading the D when a 3-4 defense drops into coverage. Why are we not trying to fix that? I understand that we need to watch film on the next opponent and we can assume to a certain degree that they will do what they normally do BUT it is not a reason to work on what has caused us issues in the past! Teams are adjusting to our weakness and we don’t seem to be doing anything to fix it.

That's a very good point
One has to know by now what teams are doing to “befuddle” our quarterback. Where are the adjustments and why is the passing game getting worse each week, not better?

This has been my thought the whole season
That’s why I keep harping on the poor coaching. I believe this is why the Bills’ offense had such slow starts in games, and then came back in the 4th Q. The coaches were being outcoached during their prep week (I know I remember saying that on this blog early in the season (right after the Raiders and Rams games).
Once the Bills ran up against some better teams (who had figured out Edwards’ difficulties with non-blitz situations), the O could just never muster enough to come back late in the game. But I think it STILL means the O is doing mostly the same old thing nearly every week, and other teams’ Ds are throwing in wrinkles that the Bills’ coaches haven’t even thought of or considered how to address.

Trent has always pointed the finger at himself. Like many great leaders, he is so focused on being the best that he can be that he doesn’t point fingers at other people. He simply stated a fact…the scout team defense wasn’t the same as the brown’s defense was. I hope everyone recognizes the monday night football as a learning experience for trent edwards. The guy is a great leader, I hope they don’t put J.P. in. J.P just can read defenses that well, and can’t learn from his mistakes very quickly.
