Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News pens an excellent article on Trent Edwards' struggles. I enjoyed the article because of Turk Schonert's quotes - his straight-shooting is refreshing. Trent's a pretty straight shooter as well.

Trent & Schonert are both blunt and that is nice

I agree with you Brian, it is refreshing to read their comments, they do shoot from the hip.

I am a Bills fan through thick & thin and I’ll admit that I let myself be caught up in 4-0 start, which is unfortunate because like any good drug it’s the coming down to reality that is painful.

Trent is definitely our QB of the future, we’ve seen him do things that very few are good at. His ability to read blitzes and get the ball out quick is a huge asset. Its easy to forget that for a rookie QB there are limits to how much info they can process, learning on the job will just payoff later, we need to be more patient.

Clearly the priority this off season needs to be to fix the trenches but in the meantime at least they are now finding ways to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers: Lynch/Jackson Steve Johnson is emerging as a steady contributor on the offense and Derek Fine deserves more opportunities as well. Hardy disappointed me again this week, when he didn’t even attempt to help out his QB on that INT that was intended for him, with a little effort he could have caught it or at a minimum bat it down – instead he choose to watch. Same goes for Royal, I am pretty fed up watching this guy either fumble or stay stuck in what seems like second gear. On the interception intended for him he just watched while rookie Steve Johnson blew in to make the saving tackle.

I am encouraged by the amount of experience that Trent is gaining and the progress by some of our rookies. I do feel that we can finish with a better record over last season, which for a young rebuilding team is basically the only thing we should be expecting.

The int to Hardy was way underthrown and in back of him.

His body was moving away from the ball. No way he could touch that one.

The formula going forward should, hopefully, run more especially outside. And do not throw so much over the middle in the short to med range. Trent’s throw to Royal, IMO, succeded in part because it was a bang bang play. He didn’t have enough time to contemplate. The ball got to him quickly. Reminded me of the way others have used the short slant on us. Hope that play shows up more.

Butler seems to allow us to be more versatile on the O line. What a difference. If we can match the play of the O line last half going forward, we should get some W’s.

everything goes better with bacon
