After a three-game stretch against Arizona, San Diego and Miami where McKelvin averaged 21 yards on his 14 returns, he has erupted in the last three weeks against New York, New England and Cleveland. In those games he has 13 returns for 502 yards, an average of 38.6 yards.
This recent surge has vaulted McKelvin to third in the league with a 29.0 average and his 1,073 yards — already the seventh-best total in Bills history with six games still to be played — is the most in the league.

I said all along that he was going to break one soon.
I just wish it would have come on an opening kickoff.

I think we will see the same kind of explosion from Hardy
It may not come this season, but look how long it took most of us to appreciate Josh Reed’s value. I think Hardy will work out fine, and McKelvin is clearly showing his value.

Yikes
I don’t want to have to wait as long as it took us to appreciate Reed to appreciate Hardy. Plus Hardy is 6’6, I want TDs next season! (and not garbage ones at the end of the Pats game, the kind from the Jags game)

We appreciated Reed...
when Reed started playing football. For more than one year I was calling him “stone hands”-a title I’ve passed on to Robert Royal for the time being.

fair enough. Speaking of Royal, it looks like Martelleus Bennet, Dustin Keller and many other rookie TEs are looking like potential studs….I want one!!

I picked Martellus Bennett in the SBN Mock Draft.
Of course, I picked Malcolm Kelly at #11, too. :)

I do remember that. You must have been squirming when we took Ellis over Cottam in the third no?

Not really, because I actually thought Ellis would, you know, do something this year.

I was a big Bennett fan too.
But over time, I think Hardy will be very good. It will be interesting to see where OBD puts the need for a TE in the next draft. I’m guessing round 3.

Double Edged Sword
The down side of the total return yards is that the other team must be scoring alot of points to be kicking off so much. I would prefer there be only one runback a game!

So when are we going to sign another CB? Right now all we have is McGee, McKelvin and Corner. Greer seems like he’ll be out a while, maybe the rest of the season. We can’t go with only 3 CB’s…..

I thought we drafted McKelvin
because he was the best CB in the draft? His skills in the return game should only be icing on the cake.

Why should return skills only be “icing on the cake”? People were calling him a bust as a return man, too…
I get your point, though. Leo’s getting better as a corner, too. And speaking of Leo…

I did not realize Toronto had picked a mascot yet?
Agreed, he is getting better at CB. I don’t think I got down on McKelvin as some did. I think the reason he got so much "heat " is because other CBs taken after him are making the highlight reel and McKelvin got lit up a few times. I think we will have the last laugh!!!!

it is way too early to discern who is the best CB in that draft
the return skills were a great bonus to tide us over until he does become a nasty corner. Which I maintained pre-draft and will continue to: Leodis McKelvin is going to be nasty.

at this point
I’d love to trade in my Trent Edwards authentic I bought for a McKelvin! He is electric. And I hope that he becomes a playmaking CB for us. I Mean seriously, McGee, Greer and McKelvin playing bump and run is the way our defense should roll. Those guys can do it. McKelvin will take his lumps at this point, but Greer & McGee can cover and jamming guys like they did some on Monday night was fun to watch

McKelvin and our return on the #11 pick
For every Aaron Ross type player who comes in as a CB and makes an immediate impact, there are a lot of players like Winfield and Clements that take some time to grow into their roles on the Defensive side of the ball.
The fact that he is becoming a very good return man is just extra on top of what we were hoping for. A solid rookie effort and growth into a very good to great CB a season or two down the line. I was really hoping he wouldn’t see the field much this season, but due to injury he is being forced too, and what we are starting to see is very encouraging. I think we’ll all be very happy by end of the season with what we have in McKelvin.
Btw, who else thought the same thing when Youbuty got hurt filling in for McGee while injuried? “This kid is just so dang injury prone” I really think if we have to rely on Ashton to be more than a Nickel, the kids leg is gonna fly off!

Hey, In fairness, I said he would be a bust as a kick returner. I thought he would make a dynamite punt returner. How wrong was I? I guess I can’t be right about everything! (just kidding …… kinda)

He was a bust as a return man. The past 3-4 games he’s finally started to rely on instinct and has been making cuts and finding space instead of just going to wear the return was set up. It’s been night and day since that’s occurred, thankfully.

bust should be reserved for players like a certain offensive lineman…….

Rookie progression / Grade
McKelvin = D+
Let’s be totally honest, he didn’t look that good in the first games! He had a great opportunity to get some playing time with McGee & Youboty both out for a while but yet managed to remain the worst of all the CB’s in the first round:
McKelvin (11th) 14 tackles, 1PDef, 0 INT
Rogers Cromartie (16th) 21 tackles, 9PDef, 2 INT
Talib (20th) 12 tackles, 6 PDef, 3 INT
Jenkins (25th) 19 tackles, 3 PDef, 1 INT
Cason (27th) 44 tackles, 5 PDef, 1 INT
Hardy = D+
I know that WR’s take a while to learn their position and given the simplistic system in Indiana, we need to understand that it will take a bit more time. Unfortunately, we needed someone to come in and make a difference this year. I find that he looks lazy. I was EXTREMELY disappointed on Monday night because in my view, especially after reviewing the play, Hardy ran a poor pattern and more importantly he just stood there and watched the defender intercept it and didn’t do anything about it. Again when you compare him to his peers he really has not lived up to his draft rank:
Avery (33rd) 34rec / 485y / 2TD
Nelson (36th) 21rec / 247y / 1TD (he is not a starter and is the 3rd/4th receiver)
Hardy (41st) 9rec / 87y / 2TD
Royal (42nd) 56rec / 659y / 4TD
Jackson (49th) 42rec / 652y / 1TD
Clearly we got the short end of the stick once again. Unfortunately instead of getting a good Pass-catching TE they tried to combine both by getting a 6’6" WR but by doing so limited their options to a guy coming out of Indiana that would take a while to develop. I guess we didn’t have a choice because most of these other receivers are only 5’10" and most teams today have at least one receiver over 6’4" and we didn’t so I understand the pick.
Ellis = F
Total disapointment. There is absolutely no other way to put it. With Schobel out, you’d thik this guy could at least crack the lineup! He is wasting a valuable spot on a 53man roster – get rid of him!
Fine = C
Looks pretty good but because of the injury, not enough playing time to judge.
Steve Johnson = A
From what I can see this guy is for real. Great measuments for a WR at 6’2" 202lbs. He has made the best of his very limited opportunities so far and is well deserving of more starting time. He clearly should be getting the next start over Hardy. He dropped one pass and I am certain it was nerves (his first NFL start…) but he made some great catches other than that. A few weeks ago he made a great shoe-lace catch while knowing he was going to be laid out immediately afterwards – showed great poise! And on Monday night he impressed the socks out of me when he tackled the Defender that had just intercepted the pass intended to Robert Royal, while Royal was just standing around – this kid is the diamond in the rough of our draft!

You don’t cut a third-round pick before the end of his rookie season, or immediately after it, for that matter. Disappointment? Yes. Cut him? Good Lord, no.
I disagree with every single one of these grades, and not just because you unfairly predicated most of them on instant impact. It’s way too early to be grading these guys on anything.

Come on keysh, you gotta be kidding me. Grading rookies eleven weeks into the season is as ridiculous as Mel Kiper’s hair. If McKelvin is a D+, then Jenkins must be a Q-. He’s been absolutely horrendous so far. But, none of this really matters because they are all just rookies.
Hardy has been a little disappointing so far only in that I was hoping he would have made more of an impact in the red zone by now. But given the simplistic nature of Indiana’s offense, is not too surprising he’s had some hiccups figuring out an NFL offense (if that’s what you can call what Schonert does). Just like Nelson, Hardy is not a starter either. He’s barely seen the field given Reed and Evans rapport with Edwards. But, none of this really matters because they are all just rookies.
I’m not sure how a 3rd round rookie who, at best, was supposed to be a situational pass rusher is a total disappointment eleven weeks into a season, of course, I’m not sure how anyone can be a total disappointment eleven weeks into the season. Ellis is behind three established DE’s. They may not be very good DE’s, but they are established (for w/e reason). But, none of this really matters because they are all just rookies.
So, you admit Fine has looked good, but really hasn’t had enough playing time to judge….soooo, you go ahead and judge him and give him a C. But, none of this really matters because they are all just rookies.
I admit, Steve Johnson has looked good so far, given that he has had very limited playing time so far (see: Derek Fine….maybe we should give Steve Johnson a C, too?). I’m not really sure making a few catches and making a tackle after an interception (isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?). I’d like to see him get more playing opportunities as he seems to be grasping the offense much quicker than Hardy. Of course, with Reed most likely back this week, that probably only further limits Johnson’s looks.
Oh, and again, none of this really matters because they are all just rookies.

The premise for the grading is Rookies making an impact
I should have added that note, my bad.
I am not implying that these guys won’t come around, just saying that for a team that needs rookies to have an impact our Front office did poorly. Unlike teams with a lot of quality depth we need the rookies to come in and have a more immediate impact and unfortunately it is not the case.
I stand by my comments. Maybe I went a little far in the Ellis comment but the way I see it, we are so bad at pass rush, you’d think that the guy could at least get in for a series or two. Obviously the coaching staff do not like what they see because he has not played a snap so far this season and surely there has been ample opportunities to get him in for a look.
by keysh67 on Nov 21, 2008 10:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hardy’s production has been a disappointment, but I’m more disappointed because he just looks bad. He’s slow, can’t make any moves or cuts, doesn’t go up strong for the ball and just looks lost most of the time. He in no way looks like a future stud. From the way he looks out there, I don’t know if I can see him as anything more than a redzone threat. This has nothing to do with what he has produced for us so far.

Johnson / Hardy
And on Monday night he impressed the socks out of me when he tackled the Defender that had just intercepted the pass intended to Robert Royal, while Royal was just standing around
And Hardy made an awesome tackle in the Rams game. He looked like a better tackler than the entire Bills’ defense at that time (except for Youboty). So suddenly Johnson is stellar because he made one good tackle? I don’t think you’re being as rational as you think you are.
by thefourwinds on Nov 21, 2008 3:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Did I say it was because of a single tackle?
Johnson has made the best of each opportunity he’s gotten this year. I’ve seen him drop only 1 pass thrown his way. I can’t say the same for Hardy. Hey don’t get me wrong, I am glad we drafted Hardy and I am certain that at some point he will be able to contribute big but I don’t think that its going to be this year. He seems way too tentative and at times slow and confused. I really like Johnson, I think he can contribute this year. He’s was a steal as a 7th rounder!
