Where is the committment to winning?

Leo Roth asked that question in the D & C podcast this week.  Specifically, him and Sal spent about 25 minutes just straight hating on Dick Jauron and the coaching staff-and I've come around a bit.

I listen to the interviews and read the press releases and just once, ONCE, I would like to hear Dick Jauron say "yeah 'we've had a tough time, and we're going to try something new."   Or Trent Edwards say "yeah I'm frustrated and in a rough patch."

But Sal's quote from Walker saying essentially "we're okay, we're still 5-5 there are teams worse than us" is just nauseating.  That's like when I teach class and I come across a student that seems to be shooting for D, I can't stand it.

Or someone somewhere to just ADMIT that this is a four game losing streak!  As the podcast guys point out this team seems happy, or at least content, with being 5-5.  How can we keep supporting a team that is just okay with showing up on Sunday and not really coming across as concerned about winning!

It's really one thing if the team wants to win and they come across that way- It's a whole other thing to have no sense of urgency, no sense of disgrace, no sense of pride about the last month of terrible football they've played.

I like these two, even though they often come across as prophets of doom-at least this week they really seem to hit the nail on the head.  These problems with the team really have to do with the direction and coaching-not the talent.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Buffalo Rumblings - all you care to know about the Buffalo Bills and more

by Brian Galliford on Nov 20, 2008 8:18 PM EST reply actions

It’s hard to argue against that. The players, the coaches, the entire team hasn’t shown urgency all year. Maybe for a handful of plays against the Browns, but it sure didn’t look like they knew their season was basically on the line.

It would be refreshing if someone, anyone, came out and just let it all out. Hearing the same junk out of everyone is quite annoying.

If people think these players, coaches and the organization in general are trying less hard to win games, or care about winning less or are less dissapointed with losing, then that is your opinion, but if you think the players and coaches are actually saying what they are thinking after games, then I can’t help you.

How many times have you heard a coach give a player his endorsement only to bench him the next week? Or when a GM says his coach is here to stay and then fires him within the month?

When there is a big rivalry game a few weeks down the road and the media asks every player about it only to get the answer “well we are just focusing on the game this weekend, we will worry about the rival team when we play them. Every game is just as important as the next one.” Do you actually believe them?

How about when a team isn’t mathematically elimanated, but they need to win thier last 5 games and they need everyone else in the race to practically lose out. Do you believe the players when they say that they are still in the race and they havn’t given up hope yet?

How about a school reference, have you ever had a student who pretends like he doesn’t care, but really does and gets straight As? The kind of kid who tells all his friends he didn’t study for the test to try and look cool, aces the test and downplays how well he did to all of his friends, but has a big smile on his face when you return the graded test to him.

The players don’t speak their minds and they probably shouldn’t. The players say what they think they should say and not what they are actually thinking. That is why cliches exist in sports. Players are trying to say the right thing to support their teammates and stay positive. This is exactly why I go out of my way to not listen to post game interviews and when I do catch one, I take it at face value and don’t read into anything they are saying. you can’t read between the lines when players are just throwing out cliches. Do people actually think that DJ going out to the media after the game and saying that his team played poorly, or that he coached poorly, or that the team is backed into a tight spot in the standings is actually going to help this team play better on Sundays? What does a press conference or a player interview actually tell you about anything?

I don’t think it speaks poorly of the players or coaches for answering questions with cliches and other thoughtless answers. I get why they do it and I would do it too. If you were getting interviewed when all you want to do is hit the showers and go home, but if you give a stupid answer to the question will get called out publically, then wouldn’t you give the answer that makes the interview end the quickest and the answer that nobody notices?

Good post Kaiser

I’m not a huge fan of the media. Still, I do think it’s their job to ask tough, penetrating questions, whether the players and coaches want to answer them or not. When I did the weather on TV, I used to chide the other reporters, etc., at my station who only ever asked the nice, amiable, bland, let’s-not-embarrass-the-interviewee-type questions.

Fair enough, but

And I’m not so silly as to believe everything that is being said is what is being felt/talked about-but still a little sense of urgency would be nice.

Not admitting 5-5 from 5-1 is at least a bit of a freefall? Kind of ridiculous.

Langston Walker saying he’s okay with 5-5? Not okay with me.

A family of four can’t go to an NFL game for less than $200. I live in Washington DC, and to see the Bills I have to go to a bar and spend some cash on drink or food (not that i mind THAT much) or get a dish/cable package. The Bills are a product-and that product is in disrepair.

I would at least like some sort of acknowledgement that the product has been off this past month. You can’t lose every game in a month and think the same fake ass answers are going to cut it.-It would go a long way with a lot of fans IMHO to show some emotion is all I’m saying.

by Frank L on Nov 21, 2008 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Good thoughts Kaiser. The games people play.

We don’t have an Ocho Cinco or a Terrell Owens here, thankfully. So we are very unlikely to see a player just start spewing on camera. The observation of a “livid” Evans after the last game is as close as we’ll get. I have always taken sports interviews with a grain of salt.

IMO this also has a lot to do with our expectations as diehard fans. What are your expectations for our team? The first 6 games may have artificially inflated expectations. I still am taking the long view – that is one to two years down the road. After we replace a few black holes on the team, my expectations will be different. I also try to remember that when reality differs from expectations, to drop the expectations. Much less painful. Do I expect this team to do better? Yes, but.

expectations did get too high

I think most fans were thinking 8-8 for this team and that’s what we are about to get. The next 2 years will get better, we have to have patience.

great post by kaiser.

I would like to add that dick jauron has said that the team is 5-5 and is trying to get back on the winning streak. If Ryan Lindell made that kick last monday, no one would be putting up these posts this week.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t. People have to just be patient. The Bills have a young QB. Everyone just needs to chill out. Dick Jauron is doing a fine job.

If Lindell had made that kick, my post would have said, “It’s clear the Bills can only beat weak teams this year. Don’t expect them to beat any team with a winning record for the rest of the season.”

by thefourwinds on Nov 20, 2008 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Fourwinds here

I still would feel pretty critical of a team that had to luck out against the Browns.

There just seems to be a lot of talent on this team and they can’t produce-that seems like a coaching issue to me.

by Frank L on Nov 21, 2008 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

lots of talent

What do you define as a lot of talent?

1. We have a second year QB who is still learning.
2. We have only one viable receiving threat.

Watching the team play.......I see no indication that the players are not trying to win...

Now maybe they’re hamstrung at times from the coaches, but I see nothing that tells me the guys are just “showing up” and failing to give their all every single play………..but thats just me, and shockingly…I’ve been wrong once or twice in the past.

Disappointment proves that expectations were mistaken.......ladies and gentlemen your 2008 Buffalo Bills.....

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 21, 2008 1:38 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think that’s what anyone is trying to say. If someone says they don’t feel the Bills are committed to winning, it doesn’t mean they aren’t out their on the field trying to win. It means (at least as I would read it) that they don’t throw every single thing they have into putting the best team out there. If that makes any sense, which I doubt. You see other organizations bringing in proven players, coaches and front office people, but that isn’t as apparent in Buffalo.

I do think there is a lack of urgency and that dreaded losing mentality in Buffalo. Sure I’m sure the staff and players talk about turning it around and doing everything it takes to get the W this week behind closed doors, but it just doesn’t look that evident out on the field. Much of the time it just looks like complacent football and the players almost expecting something bad to happen (as fans, that’s the case for sure).

I don’t see much giving up out there, though it sure appeared that way against the Pats, and I’m sure many of the vets on this team wouldn’t put up with any sort of quitting. I really do think the losing culture of this team for so many years really does have an impact, even if just a little bit, on the way this team reacts to adversity….

Right

I’m not saying they don’t want to win, I’m saying the attitude portrayed seems to be they could live without winning.

Urgency. Please. I’d just like someone to say “I intend to go out there and make a difference this week.” Not "I’m okay with being 5-5 and losers of 4 straight.

Frank I get whatb you are saying..

By Kaiser is absolutely right. Those interviews are a necessary evil that can only complicate their lives so by always keeping it even keel they avoid further conflict/discussions. I think what makes me even more furious is the media itself, guys like Don Banks, Dr Z, Deon Sanders, Sapp, Fabiano, etc. They are all a bunch of idiots trying to stir the pot, that’s all that they are good for. They say one thing one week and then change their minds the next. They look so hard for controversy that they often try to create it.

I can see why a guy like Dick comes out and basically says nothing, cause if you give them an inch… Where I would like to see Dick come alive more is on the sidelines during the game. He looks so overwhelmed all the time that it does not seem very inspiring for the team. I would to see him get a bit exited when there is a bad call, see him throw the challenge flag like he means it, maybe get in the players face if he screws-up – you know what I’m talking about.

I have always been a huge fan of Bill Parcels, I like the way he manages his team and I also like the way he has always managed the media, like the scum they really are – ridiculing them when they ask dumb questions or are trying to bait him. He’s a straight shooter, take no prisoners type of guy and you always know where he stands.

Funny thing is that Dick Jauron comes from the Parcels coaching tree, through Coughlin.

Okay but still

Can I just get Dick to say “We understand how serious this is, and how you are taking it. We are taking steps to improve.”
