Niners Nation Q&A

Hey folks, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. I (and my fellow 49ers fans) are here to answer any questions you might have about the 49ers, heading into this Sunday's game.  It's a little early in the week, but due to Thanksgiving I wanted to make sure and get this up earlier.  Brian and I will be doing some additional preview work, but for now feel free to ask any questions you might have.

The 49ers have had a rough go of it this season leading to the firing of Mike Nolan and the promotion of Mike Singletary.  Singletary is 1-3, but one could argue the team has shown improvement under his leadership.  While there has been improvements, there has been a large level of inconsistency.

On the offensive side of the ball, Singletary's promotion directly led to the benching of J.T. "Just Turnovers" O'Sullivan.  Shaun Hill has brought a more conservative approach to the offense, and yet the offense has been clearly better with Hill at the helm.  Although Hill might not be the QB of the long term future, he is proving to be a capable stop-gap while they figure out what that answer really is.

On defense, the team is really struggling to find an identity.  While the defense has very talented players (Patrick Willis and Justin Smith to name two), they lack a decent pass rush and the secondary has struggled much of the season.  Terrell Owens absolutely blew them up which has to give Lee Evans some confidence heading into his battle with Nate Clements (more on that coming later in the week).

I'm not sure what team will show up on Sunday in Buffalo.  If Mike Singletary wants to earn the full time head coaching job, he's going to need more than moral victories.

So, with that, I'll open the floor for questions.

Justin Smith? He’d fit right in with our useless, overpaid DE’s here in Buffalo!

Justin Smith

His numbers don’t reflect it, but Justin Smith has been a force on defense. He plays at 6 of the seven spots in the 3-4/4-3. His numbers don’t reflect this because the problem has been that with a lack of talent in many other spots. Defenses can just game plan specifically against Smith without worrying about compensating in other spots.

If the 49ers win, expect to have seen a big day from Justin Smith. Maybe a couple tackles, a shared sack, a forced fumble, pass deflection…that sort of thing.

Just line up Smith against the Bills C

Whether it’s Preston or Fowler, Smith will be virtually guaranteed to have a good day.

Do....

the 49ers blitz a good deal (5 or more) or do they usually play coverage? Do you think they will mimic what the Browns and Jets did and send 3 rushers with 8 in coverage, because Trent Edwards has yet to show he can deal with such coverages.

?

blitzing

The 49ers don’t bring nearly enough blitzers and when they do they tend to be ineffective. Under Mike Nolan they ran a defense that was a version of the prevent where they’d play a lot back in coverage. After seeing Nate Clements get badly burned by TO Sunday I’m curious to see how the 49ers respond. I’d personally like more pressure to force the QB to make quicker decisions. The 49ers would get pressure to Romo’s right and left but it was pretty easy for him to just take a couple steps up in the pocket and have another couple of seconds to make the pass.

I know I’m answering the questions here, but what is causing Edwards’s struggles when 8 drop back in coverage. I’d imagine only 3 rushers would give him more time to find a receiver, but is he just not able to see open men?

Edwards’ struggles against that coverage have nothing to do with time – he’s got all the time in the world to throw. Our receivers aren’t getting open, and he’s been a little tentative since he’s turned the ball over so much. That changed in KC, but again, it’s KC.

People forget that Edwards has barely a year’s worth of starting experience. He’s still learning how to read coverages and make adjustments. He overcame some of this last week by just taking off and running; he finished with 38 yards and 2 scores. He’s getting it, it’s just taking some time.

Shaun Hill

One could make a similar argument about Shaun Hill (although probably less talented than Edwards). Hill signed as an undrafted free agent out of college in 2002 and prior to last season, Hill had appeared in one game with the Vikings in 2005 and that was just for a kneel down. In the last two seasons he’s appeared in 7 games, 5 of them as a starter.

My belief about Hill is that he’s a guy who would be a solid starter while the 49ers try to develop another young QB. Hill is signed for 2 more seasons and if the 49ers were to go after a QB in the 2009 draft, they could take their time developing him. I don’t think the 49ers should roll a first round pick on a QB because they have big needs on the offensive and defensive lines. But grabbing someone in the middle rounds could give them some time.

IMO, Brian is being a little kind about Edwards

Edwards is not trusting his receivers and/or anticipating the “window”. Because of this, Edwards throws a lot of curls and very little passes where receivers catch the ball in stride headed down field that give receivers like Parrish and Evans a chance for some serious YAC potential. Now, Edwards may develop the ability to anticipate the “window”, but right now he does not.

by Joe P. on Nov 25, 2008 1:30 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Maybe I’m being a little kind, but only of late. A lot of the anticipatory throws you reference, Edwards was making early in the season, when opposing defenses were doing a lot more blitzing.

Buffalo Rumblings - all you care to know about the Buffalo Bills and more

by Brian Galliford on Nov 25, 2008 1:31 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Agreed. He was making throws before receivers came out of their break earlier in the season. Now, with the additional defenders in coverage, and his recent int struggles, he’s no longer anticipating where the receivers are going to be. He’s waiting for a WR to get open, which is too late. Gotta make the throw before he’s open.

by thatguy34 on Nov 25, 2008 1:50 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

unquestionably

WR’s were open against Cle, but after you throw some picks, one can understand throwing against 8 man coverages made Edwards hesitant. BUT, look what HAPPENS when you run the ball, get beast-mode going and THEN ask him to throw against normal 6 man coverages? Its apples to oranges when the run game is going. If that continues Trent will pony-up and make the throws. But you rely on him going 3-5 wide sets, shotgun and have him make timing throwns…..NO CHANCE

by MARVelous on Nov 25, 2008 2:57 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I thought...

Ron Jaworski put it really well when calling the Monday Night Game against Cleveland….

Edwards was WAITING for receivers to come open instead of ANTICIPATING them coming open. So naturally his throws were late and into tight windows allowing defenders to make plays on the ball. Schonert and Van Pelt need to do a better job coaching the QB and receivers in anticipation of these coverages. Our receivers aren’t exactly the best at reading coverages on the fly yet as we have a lot of youth at the position.

I also place a lot of blame on Turk Schonert (the OC) for Edwards’ problems because the Bills got the 3-man rush for the entirety of almost 2 full games and he did not call ONE draw play or screen. That is absurd. When defenders are dropping back like that, why wouldn’t you call a draw or two?

by thatguy34 on Nov 25, 2008 1:51 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

screens and draws arent as effective when teams are dropping back in coverage everytime..

Screens and draws are used to counteract a feverious up the field pass rush……

Thus I believe this point in your argument doesnt apply.

Disappointment proves that expectations were mistaken.......ladies and gentlemen your 2008 Buffalo Bills.....

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 25, 2008 1:54 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Draws...

also work because they’re designed to make defenders see a pass key so they takes steps backwards away from the LOS… it’s becoming cliche that draws are used to counteract a “feverious” (word?) pass rush… they serve other purposes like taking advantage of a D playing loose zone and low pressure.

How do you feel Rookie Kentwan Balmer has faired this year in the 3-4?

by Fam_1st on Nov 25, 2008 1:17 PM EST   0 recs

Balmer

It’s ridiculous to say, but he’s actually made more of an impact on special teams so far. For some reason when opposing teams kick short, he ends up with the ball (5 returns for 47 yards).

He’s slowly getting more playing time, but given that the 49ers are struggling with their defensive identity, it’s possible he’s just in the wrong system. He’s not big enough to be the nose tackle the 49ers need and I’m not sure if he has the skills to be a defensive end in their 3-4.

With the season quickly coming to a close, I really hope he gets more playing time so the team can fully assess him. They’ve done that with rookie guard Chilo Rachal, as he’s been plugged into the starting lineup even if he struggles. They need to do the same thing with Balmer.

Takeo

How has former Buffalo Bill Takeo Spikes fared in SF? I haven’t seen or heard much from him since he left Buffalo – clearly he’s not a dominant LB anymore, but is he competent/making any impact at all?

by roscoe11 on Nov 25, 2008 1:28 PM EST   0 recs

Great question. He has almost 70 tackles so he has definitely made an impact. I’m really curious about how good he has looked too.

by kaisertown on Nov 25, 2008 1:30 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Spikes

I think most 49ers fans are happy with Spikes’s contributions. He’s the second leading tackler behind Patrick Willis and has made numerous impact plays. One of the highlights of the season had to be his 3 straight games with an interception.

It’s hard to tell what kind of leadership he exerts on the defense but I get a sense that he is a vocal leader. When local media are looking for a post-game quote he’s quick to respond. Maybe that’s all just an ego thing, but he seems like a guy who is enjoying his time here and making important contributions.

All in all, he’s definitely making an impact for this defense. There are numerous holes on the defense, but the two inside linebackers (Willis and Spikes) are NOT two of those holes.

Good to know Takeo has found a niche in SF. I think I speak for all Bills fans when I say that we freaking loved the guy when he first became a Bill. He was all over the field and one of the vocal leaders of a very solid D. Just seems like he’s been a shadow of his former self since his achilles injury. Hope Bills fans give him a warm welcome on his return to the Ralph.

by roscoe11 on Nov 25, 2008 1:46 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Hope he gets a nice warm welcome as well. He was a tough player for us when healthy, but couldn’t cut it at the end of his tenure. Glad to see him playing pretty well again.

He's just another great player

that has never tasted playoffs which is the only thing he ever wanted. Bengals, Bills, Eagles 9ers.. He came to the Bills for that amazing 9-7 campaign that should have been playoffs but ended up watching the Bengals participate instead. Hard not to feel for him given his current situation and his time rapidly running out.

It seems like the Niners use every WR on the roster. Isaac Bruce seems like a regular contributer, but other times its Bryant Johnson or Josh Morgan or Arnaz Battle or Jason Hill. Which WRs should Bills fans keep their eyes on and who do you like to be the Niners starters next season?

by kaisertown on Nov 25, 2008 1:30 PM EST   0 recs

wide receivers

Injuries have rattled the 49ers receiving corp at different times this season, which is a big reason different players have made different impacts. Josh Morgan injured his groin a few weeks ago and the team is taking their time with him so I’d suspect he’ll be out this Sunday. Arnaz Battle missed the last three games with a foot injury, but might be back this week. Bryant Johnson was banged up throughout training camp and only now seems to be getting back to complete health. Ironically enough, the ageless wonder, Isaac Bruce, seems to be the healthiest of the receivers.

Two guys to keep an eye on are Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler. Hill has been filling in for Battle, so if Battle is healthy it will be interesting to see how Hill’s playing time will be affected. I’d imagine he’ll start the game and Battle would slowly be worked in if he is in fact active. In spite of a poor performance last week, Hill has shown a solid chemistry with Shaun Hill that has translated to production. He’s a guy 49ers fans would really like to see step up into a big time role in the offense.

Dominique Zeigler was spending his second season on the 49ers practice squad when Morgan and Battle got injured. Zeigler seems to have really good hands, which he credits to having played baseball for a long time. He’s had only 3 receptions on the year so I’m not expecting him to blow up. When Hill was running the scout team as JTO’s backup, he and Zeigler developed a solid rapport, which could pay off for Zeigler the rest of this season.

Next season’s starters is an interesting question. Rookie (and sixth round pick) Josh Morgan had become the starter opposite Isaac Bruce but injuries have derailed his season, with the groin injury now and a staph infection at the end of training camp. If he can stay healthy through all of 2009 training camp, I’d say he’s a safe bet to start. Other than I honestly don’t know what to expect. Bryant Johnson is only signed to a 1-year deal so I’m not sure if he’ll be back next season. I really hope Jason Hill can step up and become a starter, whether it be as the #1 guy or in that slot position. And of course a high draft pick could net a receiver. Although I’d expect the team to address OL or DL with their first round pick, I’d imagine Michael Crabtree could look mighty fine in red and gold.

Thanks for a such a detailed and in depth answer.

For the record, Fooch, Bryant Johnson is known as “Panda” in these parts. There was about a week-and-a-half stretch this off-season when the only team Johnson had visited was Buffalo; there were seemingly daily conflicting reports, highly speculative, on whether or not he had a deal in place with the Bills or not. We talked about it every day for a week and a half or so, and in reference to the awesome scene from Anchorman, “Panda Watch” became “Bryant Watch”. So if you see a few of us call him Panda, you’ll know why. :)

Johnson

Bryant Johnson was really banged up in the preseason and really struggled early in the season. If you don’t include Week 2 against Seattle, the Panda had 10 catches for 130 yards and no touchdowns in the first 8 weeks. In the 4 games since the bye week, it seems like he’s coming around with 11 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. The beat writers are convinced he was covering for injuries and is just now getting completely healthy. I mentioned Hill and Zeigler as guys to watch but I expect Bryant Johnson to probably make the biggest contribution on Sunday (Isaac Bruce has contributed but been rather inconsistent overall).

Also how do you feel that Nate Clements has done with the 49ers? And do you think he was worth the amount of $ they have invested in him?

by Fam_1st on Nov 25, 2008 1:51 PM EST   0 recs

Clements

The opinions of 49ers fans on the worth of Nate Clements vary pretty widely. First off, as to the contract he signed. It is a large deal no matter how you slice it, but it’s not quite as big as people think. The last two years involve huge salaries that he’ll never see as a 49er.

It’s easy to point to last Sunday and TO’s numbers and say Clements is a waste of money. However, that can’t all be placed at the feet of Nate Clements as there were also issues with safeties covering over the top (or not sufficiently covering over the top might be a better way to put it). Clements has certainly had his struggles at times, but he’s also put up some great games against the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson, among others.

All in all, Clements is obviously not the #1 cornerback in the NFL. However, given the weight of such a big contract, I think he’s done a solid job. Others will disagree but I’m happy with him.

Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

by Fooch on Nov 25, 2008 2:08 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I don’t think most Bills fans realize(d) that the last year of Clements’ contract has already been voided so it was essentially a 7 year, 64 million deal. His salary is only 3.5 mil this year and next year and 6 mil in 2010. He did just get a 10 mil roster bonus in the offseason though. You are defnintely right that Clements’ contract wasn’t nearly as big as the national media made it out to be.

by kaisertown on Nov 25, 2008 2:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

correct

At the same time it’s part of the whole mystique of the player’s salary. He wants to “appear” to be paid as one of the best corners in the league, so he better perform like one for the fans to get behind him. I think given the lack of a pass rush (which can certainly hurt the secondary) he’s done a pretty good job overall.

just like the Bills offense needs to run through Marshawn.

Disappointment proves that expectations were mistaken.......ladies and gentlemen your 2008 Buffalo Bills.....

by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 25, 2008 1:57 PM EST   0 recs

Martz has always been a throw first guy! Gore gets a lot of catches out of the backfield, similar to how we’ve seen Lynch getting a lot more carries lately.

by Fam_1st on Nov 25, 2008 2:00 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Martz

Mike Martz has certainly frustrated 49ers fans. He uses Gore at times but then goes long stretches at critical points in the game without using him. The worst had to be when the 49ers were leading the Eagles going into the 4th quarter and Gore touched the ball something like 2 times that quarter.

I think Martz’s ego creates a stubborn streak. Since Singletary took over as head coach it has seemed at times like Martz has been reigned in a bit, and then we see a game like Dallas where Gore doesn’t get nearly enough touches, particularly in the red zone. Consider me baffled by the whole thing.

by Kurupt on Nov 25, 2008 2:53 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Hill

Hill HAS been an improvement over JTO. JTO was higher reward at times, but he was tremendously higher risk. Hill runs a more conservative style, but it also seems more efficient. He runs longer drives which benefit our defense and puts points on the board more consistently.

Going forward my hope (and somewhat of an expectation) is that the 49ers draft a QB somewhere between rounds 2 and 5. They let Shaun Hill remain the starter as he has 2 years left on a cheap contract. During that time the 49ers do with their draftee like the Titans did with Steve McNair. Give him a small number of reps in year 1, more in year 2 and starting in year 3.

Big Picture

To get away from X’s and O’s for a second – do 49ers fans see the team as rebuilding and headed in the right direction, or in disarray/mired in mediocrity for the forseeable future? Put another way, do you think the right pieces are in place (Singletary, Alex Smith, a nucleus of talent to build on?) or is this team a dysfunctional mess that needs turnover, starting at the top?

Yeah, his salary is over 9 mil next year, he is as good as cut.

by kaisertown on Nov 25, 2008 3:12 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

big picture

Well Alex Smith is going to be cut. It’s actually possible he returns at a cheaper contract but I kind of just want them to pull the plug and move on.

Singletary has brought a new attitude but I still think he needs to get some wins to win the full-time job going forward. The team has some great talent, but also has some serious holes on the d- and o-lines. They need to decide what kind of scheme they’ll use as that will affect their draft. If they stay 3-4 they really need a big old nose tackle. if they go 4-3, they probably need more of a pass rush defensive end.

As a whole there are plenty of people who think the team is in disarray. I actually think things are improving. The ownership has deemed their son Jed York the new face of the franchise and he seems to know his stuff (he’s got a little Eddie DeBartolo in him and Eddie D happens to be his godfather, which we like). Ownership has invested money in the team so I’m not concerned there.

I honestly think it all comes down to a few more pieces and better scheming. Singletary seems to have them going in the right direction but there’s no clear answer yet. I think by the end of the year I can give you a better answer.

Niners Nation - The premier 49ers blog on the Internet!

Why pull the plug on Smith?

Will he really be cut? No trade value same as JP I guess. Is he that bad, or just not a good fit in S.F.? Do you think he will be able to compete for a starting job elsewhere? If not, we need a backup for Edwards. Would he be a good one for the Bills, given the fact Smith is only 2 years older than Edwards? Would Smith accept the role of backup QB? How about a straight trade, Smith for JP?

by Joe P. on Nov 25, 2008 9:54 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Smith is getting cut because his salary is almost 10 mil next year.

YES.

Looking at his skill set, he is JP reincarnate.

by NJBillsfan on Nov 29, 2008 1:58 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Smith is not JP reincarnate

Here is the SI scouting report on Smith:

POSITIVES: Efficient and reliable passer that’s done well in his college system. Accurate in the short field, leads receivers over the middle and places throws where only his target can make the reception. Solid timing on crossing patterns. Patient in the pocket, effectively reads the defense and does not make poor decisions. Goes through receiver progressions, waits for pass catchers to come free and throws to the safe underneath target if nothing’s available downfield. Sets up with solid fundamentals and passes with an over-the-top delivery. Keeps his feet active and easily gets outside the pocket, making the throw on the move. Displays outstanding wherewithal and knows where receivers are on the field. Throws tight spiral with good zip. Stands strong and poised in the pocket as it collapses around him.

NEGATIVES: Must improve his corner patters in the end zone as passes tend to be flat. Rarely threw the ball down field in the Utah system.

ANALYSIS: A natural leader that does an excellent job running the offense, Smith has been very productive the past two years. Stays away from mistakes and has a tremendous touchdown-to-interception ratio. Does not have a deep passing arm just yet but would be initially effective in a timing or West Coast offense as he grows into a pro passing game.

Smith sounds like someone who would fit our system. And weren’t most people saying what a great backup QB JP was? Well, he will be walking in 30 days. Then who will be our backup? I seem to remember saying, “Trade JP….get Eric Ainge in the draft.” Now we need to get a servicable backup QB somehow. Drafting one this year is a possibility, but do you really want a rookie QB backing up Edwards. Hamdan has not looked like he is ready to be the backup. That leaves us with one option, signing a veteran QB.

by Joe P. on Nov 29, 2008 11:49 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

salary

As kaisertown stated, salary is the reason he’ll be cut. His salary next year is like $12M and the following year is like $20M. They may try and sign him to a league minimum deal after that, but I’d prefer they just let him walk and start over with a new young QB (developed behind Shaun Hill.

how do you like your front office? Do you think the people are in place to direct this team? I’ve heard the organizational top structure is so corrupted that the people are not in place to make smart football decisions? IMO, anytime you miss on a #1 overall QB, you set your franchise back 10 years at least. I was sad to see that happen. I think its an organizational thing as well.

I’ll be the first to admit I thought the Falcons were CRAZY for taking Matt Ryan, but that kid has been unreal. But the Falcons also have a great, great running game. But its sad to see top picks like Smith never even touch the surface of their potential

Front Office

There are people down on Scot McCloughan but things will be interesting with a new full time coach (whether it be Singletary or a bigger name). Nolan had a lot of influence on things, even after he was stripped of his personnel title. It’s hard to separate between what is the hand of Nolan and what is the hand of others.

Personally, I think things are going in the right direction and that started with the firing of Mike Nolan. As I stated above, it’s still a little too early to tell with Mike Singletary in regards to his impact on the performance of the team and his own input into the drafting and free agent process. I hope Singletary keeps the job after this year, but I also think he still has to prove its his job to have.

Some of you may find this enjoyable. Just a little chat I had with 9ers fans a while back.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Dude, your the man. I enjoyed that very much. Most of the 9er fans were pretty cool, but I have to quote this:

Just how I see things, you may not agree, but then that doesn’t bother me overly much. – sireric himself

Awesome. Thanks for linking that!

haha. You kept your cool and like I said, most of the 49er guys were really cool.

It was some good natured joshing. I didn’t realize Bills fans were so thin skinned especially after choking in all those super bowls.

what a curse worde, expletive, curse word, nickname for a penis that guy was. The 49ers have been bad for awhile now and I don’t see how they can turn it around anytime soon.

Sure maybe it’s a disadvantage to play at 10:00 am than it is to play at 1:00 but is it that much more of a disadvantage than playing at 4:00 instead of 1:00? I don’t think so.

Clearly he was very, very, very wrong and this year proves that without a doubt.

I think this is the first time that the word “penis” has been used on this blog. Well played. I think.

I tried to use it in the classiest way possible. I doubt it was all that successful, but at least it wasn’t inappropriate, or that inappropriate.
