The debate is over...Jauron's time is up

Losing at home to Mike Singletary, Shaun Hill and the 49ers is the final straw for the Dick Jauron experiment.  No reasonable person can argue that Dick Jauron and his staff bring anything positive to the Bills in terms of gameday management, weekly preparation, roster management, or any other tangible skill set.  The Bills have only one active player (JP Losman) who was neither brought in or re-signed by Dick Jauron's regime.  This is Dick Jauron's team through and through and Dick Jauron's team is a last place outfit in year three of his tenure.  Tom Donahoe's mess has been removed neatly, but unfortunately, it's been replaced by an equally brutal disaster.  It's not fun to admit, but it's not questionable any more- this new mess needs its own cleaning up pronto.

I don't buy that Ralph Wilson is a senile cheap skate who doesn't care about winning.  He's a reasonable businessman who puts adequate money into the team and cares about winning, but unfortunately, he has a misguided history of placing insufficient value on the coaching staff he employs.  Look at the Dolphins.  They went from 1-15 to Super Bowl contenders in one year and all it took was landing a proven winner in Parcells and his chronies to turn the tide.  Just as Parcells is proven winner in the NFL, Jauron is a proven loser as his 8th season as a head coach comes to a close.  Even if it means cheaping out on a linebacker, or a safety, or a wide receiver, or whatever, Wilson needs to woo a Bill Cowher, an Andy Reid, a Marty Schottenheimer, a Brian Billick, a Mike Holmgren, a Jon Gruden, a Dan Reeves, a Dick Vermeil, or whoever should be available this offseason.  If he needs to use draft picks to get his man, so be it, but Wilson needs to give this team some honest, thoughtful, resilient, and most importantly, tenacious direction at the top.  The current rectionary direction of this franchise a disgrace and the loyal fans of this team deserve so much more.  It's not fun to rebuild, but it doesn't take nearly as long as it used to.  Give this franchise a chance, can Dick Jauron tomorrow.

Should read, “Jauron’s time should be up.”

Man, I’d love to see someone like Cowher come to the Bills. Not sure too many of the other coaches you mention would be great choices. Holmgren, Reid, Billick…eh. Schottenheimer and Reeves would be a step up, but neither had the killer mentality that could win them the SB.

Gruden’s a good coach, at least better than Jauron. But man he’s weird. He’d stockpile too many QBs, the Bills would never have enough players at the other positions.

but they were 1-15 last year, now they have 7 wins. That’s an amazing turnaround

Amazing? They were better than 1-15 last year, talent-wise – Cam Cameron is just a fool. Now they’ve got a vet QB and the same cupcake schedule we couldn’t take advantage of (and that we’re a part of). I’m not amazed.

Maybe Jauron is a fool too

We are a talented team in most areas, but the mismanagement of the roster and of the strategy is a big problem. As has been said, Jauron dictates his strategic will on the team, despite their strengths. Unlike the Dolphins, who even went so far as t use a dead formation because it would benefit or enhance the talent of their two excellent rbs. I want to be a trend setter, or a team that at least goes blow for blow with the elite teams of the league. Not a team that loses in the most pussifying fashion. We are a weak team, its unfortunate, but its true. We didn’t see it in the beginning, because who knew Seattle was going to take a dump, or Jacksonville for that matter. But even in those early games, it seemed that something was still up, but you can’t argue with Ws.

The final point, is that this is the QB’s second year, and as he has gone, we have gone. Our team can still build on this year. This Trent’s full year as a starter, and he may get better. Losman seemed okay in 06, but Trent has looked much better overall, and I think he can be better next year, and a franchise QB. He might not, but I think he can be. I also believe we will draft another QB, because of the loss of JP, and then we will see how Trent likes that. I think it would be dumb not to draft one at some point this draft. So, now Jauron might still be here.

The Bills CAN win every game

Your first paragraph is dead on. 3 years in, with all his players, he still can’t muster a winning season. I keep hearing how we’re building towards something, but it sure doesn’t look any different than what we’ve been seeing for years. I see an undertalented, poorly coached disaster that plays soft, especially in the cold. It’s disgusting.

I think you can include Moorman in the Losman stat. Either way, I really hadn’t thought about that but that’s pretty remarkable. After hand crafting this team, it’s still the same old crap. In fact, with some of these contracts, I think we’re hamstrung at certain positions where we may not be able to invest the picks or cash into any time soon.

Even Moorman was extended in 2007…You could even make the argument that JP Losman, the backup QB, is a product of Jauron’s regime in that he moved to this role last season and Buffalo decided to bring him back as the backup in 2008 rather than replace him with somebody else. This team needs a new direction and the most honest way to do so is with a strong leader at the head coach position. Whether the Dolphins are true Super Bowl contenders or not, their quick turnaround time (IN OUR OWN DIVISION) makes it clear that “starting over” doesn’t have to take half a decade these days…a real head coach would have no problem determining what pieces we already have can contribute to a winner and which pieces can’t. But the first step to fixing this mess is Wilson admitting that Jauron/Schonert/Fewell/Kollar etc. aren’t the right pieces in terms of gameday decisions, preparation, or roster management. Waiting until 2010 won’t help; this cleanup process needs to begin this week.

hand-crafted

i understand the disappointment, but this is a really young team. a 2nd yr qb running the offense, 2nd yr MLB running the defense, 2nd yr RB carrying the offense, not to mention the future development of leodis, marshawn, hardy (hopefully), whitner, et al.

i feel like a lot of the same people that predicted 8-8ish seasons are now outraged that we are headed to something similar. the teams we beat to get to 4-0 were awful, regardless of what we thought at the time. (sea-brutal, jax-huge disappointment, oak-bad, rams-bad). the chargers and chiefs are also bad. our 6 wins have come across very bad or very disappointing teams, all of which have terrible records.

im resolved to our 2008 misery, my major concern is the piss poor performances laid out by edwards after a quick start. very frustrating to contemplate a future without a rock solid qb.

jets and pats getting spanked. irritating.

I hate the youth excuse. Just another excuse for the junk that’s being put out on the field. When the Cowboys beat us in SB27, their average age was under 26 years of age. Youth is just an excuse and nothing more here. Playing scared, conservative, uninspired football is where the root of the problem really lies.

This team doesn’t have a whole lot of talent, which is a major factor. The coaching staff is outcoached routinely.

I didn’t think this team was that good heading into the season, but after a 5-1 start, I believed we could be a playoff team, especially with a somewhat weak schedule. To be 6-6 right now is flat out disappointing and outrageous. I guess beating other bottom feeders, like ourselves, is nothing to get excited about.

Not only does this team stink this year, but the future doesn’t look all that bright with what’s in place now….

I can definitely see the difference in the Bills from previous years.

The organization is trying to build a consistent winner. Just because the Dolphins have won more games this year does not mean they are poised to be better than us in the future. Sure, the Bills may not be winning a bunch of games now, but they are building a really good football team that I believe will be a consistent winner in the near future.

The ball just hasn’t bounced our way a couple times this season. If Leodis doesn’t get burned on the one play to Isaac Bruce, and Lindell makes his field goals then we would be 7-5. If Lindell makes the field goal against the Browns we are 8-4. If the Bills were 8-4 right now would they be better poised to be a consistent winner? I don’t think so.

Another question you should think about. If the Bills were 8-4 and ended up making the playoffs would they get out of the first two rounds? No.

Of course I wish the Bills had a better record right now. Just because they have not won more games than previous years does not mean that they are not building the football team correctly. Sometimes you have to go through growing pains. As soon as Trent Edwards develops, this team is going to be one of top 3 best teams in the AFC.

Well, the debate may be over, but whether you like it or not, Jauron’s tenure is probably not up. :)

billick

i will cry if the bills hire billick. didnt take the ravens long to turn it around once they got rid of him. now they just need to bounce willis (who sat in uniform on the sideline all day without playing, havent heard why) and they will be good to go.

ive never had an issue with jauron’s demeanor, when the bills win people call it calming, when they lose they call it uninspired. ive always detested his conservatism and random, unsubstantiated risk-taking, and that won’t change. i was screaming for a FG on 4th and 2; get points and let your defense get the ball back, although that wouldnt have worked with our offense today. even if you do go for it, how do you put what’s left of your season in your backup qbs hands, run the ball, set up a screen, do something do get it into a playmaker’s hands ASAP.

the playcalling last year and now this year has been disgusting. the niners had no idea how to stop marshawn, and yet the bills are in the shotgun half the game. if you demand to pass the ball all day, atleast do it through play action, rollouts, standard running sets to give the impression that you actually realize you are dominating the game on the ground. i really think we wouldve won the game if we had 2 WR sets on every play and just ran the ball 70 times.

the red zone playcalling/o-line play was horrific. it is easy to say run the ball in the red zone, but when you are taking losses on first down in the red zone, it is equally as difficult to call another run.

with all this said, i still think the current setup could work. we are very young, and i didnt really expect anything until next year. with that said, the quick falloff this year cant be a positive for our young core’s psyche heading into next year.

jauron

i feel for him. he really is trying to win and I think he is shocked at how flat his team played today…..the players sucked. I blame this all on having crappy qb’s and an idiot play caller in certain situations….

I momentarily feel for the antelope being eaten alive by the pride of lions when I watch a nature documentary on the National Geographic Channel, but then I remind myself that this is merely what happens to the weakest antelopes; they get eaten. Dick Jauron is the weakest antelope and the NFL is the Serengeti. I’m tired of watching my team get ripped to shreds and the ineptitude of the QBs and coordinators that Jauron handpicks aren’t excuses, rather, they’re just more evidence that Jauron is not capable of surviving in a kill or be killed environment. This fan base deserves a better antelope than Dick Jauron.

McGee

Is he being directed to play that far off or is he doing it on his own? His play has gone in the dumper. At this point, I’d let him walk and re-up Greer. Here is a prime example of our coaching. McGee is getting eaten alive week after week playing off so much. He is allowed (?) to play close in the Cleveland game and does well. Do we recognize that and allow McGee to play closer more often? Why? Conservative does not do this justice. Intractable is more like it.
