You’re 26th in rushing, I told Peters. That’s not a playoff team.

"I’ll remember that comment when we make it," Peters said.

The play-calling has a lot to do with it

"As coaches, I feel like we’ve got good game plans. But everybody’s got to pull their load."

Eric Studesville who is the running game coordinator is basically not taking any responsibility for the current situation, WOW !

We have the same exact O-Line as last year, yes folks the same crappy center! But yet we did considerably better last year? Why is that? Doesn’t make sense, it was their first year together… Normally good Olines take time to gel? Well folks the biggest change from last year to this year has been coaching & play-calling. We lost Jim McNally (who retired) and replaced him by Kugler who I think should shoulder a lot of the blame. Also, we changed our Offensive coordinator. On the surface it seemed like a huge upgrade because the short passing attack has been much better but yet we’ve regressed enormously in the running game? We actually now have a Running game Coordinator, lucky us I guess?

My observations: We run too much up the middle and not enough off tackle away from our weak center (which is what I think we did last year). We are too pass happy and not sticking with the run enough to get it clicking. We’ve become very predictable as Ron pointed out last week. The O-Line does not call the plays, it’s Turk & Eric and they need to accept responsibility and realize that whatever they are doing is not working and they need to go back to what actually did work last year!

Why are there so many Peters quotes this year? I’d never heard the guy say a word before, now it’s a weekly spectacle….

Sullivan’s right. You don’t make the playoffs running the ball this poorly unless you have one of the best passing games around or one of the best D’s, which we definitely don’t have.

I agree with keysh, we run it way too much up the gut instead of utilizing our RB’s and OL’s strengths. Run it off tackle and outside more, please! Just give it a shot and let’s see what happens. I’m not sure we aren’t sticking with the run enough though. The past couple of games we’ve been down and couldn’t run it. We needed to try to score points and by wasting time trying to establish the non-existent run wasn’t going to help. Once it was obvious we couldn’t run it against these teams, we had to pass. Sure, we probably passed too much against the Jets, BUT Trent was able to move it a bit and we simply couldn’t run it AT ALL. If we were having success running the ball, then I would agree we need to stick with it more. The predictable play calling obviously doesn’t help. Pass from the shotgun, run from the standard snap, run up the middle only, etc. It’s like playing Tecmo Bowl back in the day when you only had 4 possible plays.

Looking back this year & Last

In the first 9 weeks this year and last, we won every game where we ran the ball 24+ times per game and we lost EVERYTIME that we did not.

I do not disagree that if the way we are running is not working stop doing it BUT it’s not a reason for not adjusting the running game. Just like the passing game we need to take what they are giving us and we need to play to our strengths. All I know is the starts don’t lie and I don’t think we’ve ever won a game in the past 2-3 years when we ran the ball fewer than 20 times.

It seems that Turk doesn’t like punting at all and he gets impatient, and I really disagree with that unless your confidence in your defense is zero. But our defense is able to stop the run this year so why not play the field position battle a bit more?

by keysh67 on Nov 6, 2008 11:45 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

We did run it 27 times for 119 yards against Miami…..

We simply have to run it better, whether it’s 20 times a game or 40 times a game. Not being able to pick up yards, especially in short yardage situations, is unacceptable….

that

is a good point.

It seems that turk doesn’t like punting at all and he gets impatient

. I see this too. I’m so sick of the first 10 possessions of running it every stinkn time we have a 1st down. We need to change it up, and please GOD run more screens, underneath stuff and just quick outs to Evans. Evans should touch the ball minimum 5 times a game. It’s time to start counteracting these defenses we have been seeing and out executing and out-scheming em. I have a feeling this is the weekend we play a great game. However, to beat New England you have to FINISH. I know they will play well, I just hope they can finish

I agree also...

It seems like we have the Oline better suited for running the stretches, tosses, and sweeps. If we can start to implement more of that type of running, we might start to see things open up a little bit more in the middle, at least for some 2-3 yard positive gains to keep the opposing D honest. I think the loss of Butler hurts tremendously in the run game. He’s an animal in the run game. I’d rather see Preston at RG and Fowler stay at C until Butler gets back. Preston is obviously not an NFL caliber center, but at least Fowler has a decent football IQ and usually gets the line calls right and Preston is OK as a fill in guard (better than Whittle IMHO).

If Lynch doesn’t get 20+ carries this week, I’m officially off the Kool Aid. The answer to fixing our rushing woes is not abandoning it. It is augmenting it to suit our strengths. What those are exactly these days are for more intelligent football minds than mine to figure out. I look at the last 2 weeks as extremely disappointing, but I also look at it as us playing horrendously and barely losing games that we could’ve and should’ve won.

Looking at the rest of our schedule, 10 wins seems a minimum to me. KC, SF, CLE, DEN, NYJ, MIA, NE(2). You know we could split with MIA, NYJ, and NE and there’s 8 wins and you’re telling me that we can’t win 2 more out of KC, SF, CLE, and DEN? Jigga please!

Agree on your first sentence…We have a big OL, but they are tall and pretty athletic. They aren’t the mauling type that will succeed in the power run game up the middle. That’s exactly why we need more of those outside runs, counters and even end arounds.

I’m sick of seeing the short yardage situations where we simply run the dive up the middle. That’s garbage Turk. The one time you tried something different there against the Jets (the Wildcat formation run w/Jackson), you picked up 4 yards and a first down. The predictable run up the middle there just doesn’t work for us, so go with something else!!!!

call me crazy

but i have confidence that they will reverse this trend. I think Turk has lately tried to “force” his offensive philosophy combined with Dick Jauron’s desire to pound the ball. What I mean is it seems like runs up the middle on predictable run downs, and then the passing plays Turk likes on 2nd and 3rd downs. I’d like to get back and see Turk throw it more on 1st down, and even run on 3rd and 3 or 4 from a spread formation. I think spreading the defense out, with 3 WR’s, 1 TE, allows Trent to audible to a run or pass based on what he sees.

Our 1st down yardage has to be MUCH better. He needs to mix it up more so there are more manageable downs and distances on 2nd and 3rd to keep the defense guessing. I mean last week, 1st down was brutal for us. I’m going to re-watch the game tonight on DVR and maybe take a tally of our 1st down plays.

Some thoughts

1- Peters, WTF man, “I’ll remember that comment when we make it,” Peters said…. DUDE, SHUT THE F&%K UP AND PLAY LIKE A MAN! We will NOT make it if your fat sorry ass doesn’t play better you punk. You held out for more money and have been playing like a journeyman, good job there dumbo, enjoy playing out your contract as it stands.

2- Why do we have a Running Game Coordinator? What the h*ll does he do? I mean, any 13 kid playing Madden could coordinate a better run game than what we have done the past 8 games. Cripes, what is it with team becoming more and more specialized? Back in the day, you had the OC, and his position coaches, this is all BS, all coaches are doing this day is hiring as many buddies as they can so if they get canned and one of their former employees gets hired somewhere else, they can get on that staff. This is preventing teams from being able to make quick and sound decisions. The best teams have the smallest staffs, has anyone else noticed this? I have!

3- The stretch and toss sweep and pitch plays all seem to work fine for us. We need to run these more so when our opponents do stack the box, they will be forced to spread those 8 defenders out all over the field. This will then allow us to have a more succesful inside game by keeping LBers and Ss out of the tackle to tackle area and should give Freddy and ML some cut back lanes. RUN IT OUTSIDE TURK AND ERIC!

Studesville is the running game coordinator AND the running backs coach.

The best teams have the smallest staffs, has anyone else noticed this? I have!

How could you have possibly notcied that? Do you actually know how many people each team has staffed?

The Bills site lists 18 coaches.
The Pats have 13
Tennessee has 18
Pittsburg has 16
Miami has 18
Cinci has 17
KC has 16

To think there is any correlation between good and bad teams and how many coaches they employ seems totally absurd to me.

You might consider laying off the caffeine. :)

In all seriousness, I don’t mind this comment by Peters nearly as much as I’ve minded the other ones. I like a guy with confidence. But yes, he needs to play better.

We’re not the only team to have a running game coordinator, and probably the only reason we do is because Schonert’s a rookie. In time, Turk will inherit that responsibility.

Could the split in responsibility be causing the disconnect?

Two minds are normally better than one but in this case both seem quite oblivious to the fact that our middle is our weakest area and should be avoided, especially when Butler is not there!

Can someone explain this running game coordinator position

and how to apply for it?

It’s not like Studesville is calling the plays, and I’m going to say he probably didn’t draw them up either…so what exactly is this role? Maybe he did draw them up? Did he devise the blocking sets for each run play? Is this a fake title? Did Studesville actually get fired but was going to protest, so the team hired him back and gave him the title “Running Game Coordinator” ala Homer Simpson as the Safety Inspector?? Is he like Homer and can’t get fired from the position no matter how craptastic of a job he does??

~K

by Kurupt on Nov 6, 2008 9:54 PM EST   0 recs

I think it is mostly a fake title. He is the running backs coach too, so it isn’t like running coordinator is his only duty. It’s like in the business world where you can reward someone with just a raise, but it is smarter to give someone a small raise in addition to a better title and slightly more responsibility than it is to just give someone a big raise.

My guess is that his job is to oversee the entire running game. He makes sure the running backs know the blocking schemes. He makes sure the blockers know the tendencies of the running backs. He tries to get everyone on the same page. I know that is vague, but his job description probably isn’t too much more specific.

Bills

With the bad weather coming the Bills will be lucky if they win two more games this year. Unless they make some big moves and get a starting caliber Center and two starting caliber Guards they will be a one dimentional team. Opponents will dare the Bills to pass.

by copman on Nov 7, 2008 8:36 PM EST   0 recs

This is a little too negative. I get the sentiment, but we have far more than two winnable games on the schedule. We should get 2 of Cleveland, KC and SF alone…
