Bills at Patriots: Three Key Matchups
The New England Patriots are set to host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in what can easily be considered the most relevant game the teams have played with one another in quite some time. The two teams are among three tied for the division lead in the AFC East - a division in which all four teams are separated by just one game. New England is 1-1 in the division (with a road win over the Jets), while the Bills are 0-2. Both teams have lost to the Dolphins. Needless to say, both teams are eager to turn around their in-division woes.
Both teams are dealing with injuries, which makes the game even more competitive, if a bit diluted. Naturally, however, several key matchups - and which teams can control them - will play a large role in determining Sunday's winner. Pats Pulpit and Buffalo Rumblings recently collaborated about three such matchups; here's how each matchup was broken down by Pats and Bills fans:
MATCHUP ONE: Patriots WR Randy Moss vs Bills CB Jabari Greer
MaPatsFan, Pats Pulpit: Jabari Greer has had a good start to 2008. With 28 solo tackles, he's well on his way to beating his 2007 total of 41. Oh, let's not forget the 2 interceptions and TDs! The interception and score against New York was highlight reel worthy, for sure. On the NE side, Moss has struggled a bit, but most of that is by design. QB Matt Cassel has yet to develop the long ball with Moss and they're turning him inside where he's not comfortable. Hence, we haven't seen a lot of production. Against Indy, his job was decoy, keeping S Bob Sanders out of the box most of the game. The key to winning this matchup? Greer is 5-11 and Moss is 6-4. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out - throw the ball over Greer's head! Advantage: Patriots
Brian Galliford, Buffalo Rumblings: To be honest, I'm not concerned about Moss in this one. Yes, he's quite clearly still capable of making huge plays, and the Pats will undoubtedly target him early in this one as they attempt to get out to an early lead. I'm just not especially enthralled with the playing preferences of Matt Cassel. The Bills need to weather that early storm; if they do, this Greer vs Moss matchup becomes much more about the run than the pass. New England is going to run the football; Moss can hardly be considered an effort blocker. He'll decoy a lot, as MaPatsFan alluded to, so Buffalo's corners - Greer in particular, but also Terrence McGee - will need to pitch in to stop the run. If they don't, it'll open the passing game up for Randy and company. Advantage: Push
MATCHUP TWO: Bills C Duke Preston vs Patriots NT Vince Wilfork
Brian Galliford, Buffalo Rumblings: Ugh. This one is going to be ugly. I consider Vince Wilfork a better player than the Jets' Kris Jenkins, and Jenkins absolutely destroyed the interior of Buffalo's offensive line last week. What's more, New England's defense is designed to funnel run plays toward Wilfork. Preston doesn't stand a chance against him, and I'm not particularly confident that Wilfork can be contained even if he's triple-teamed. Advantage: Patriots
MaPatsFan, Pats Pulpit: Both Preston and Wilfork are young and large, pushing 325 pounds, but Preston has a height advantage at 6-5 to Wilfork's 6-2. If Wilfork is to win this battle, he needs to get under Preston and use Duke's extra three inches to stand him up. Running a 3-4 most of the time, that's what the Pats demand of their front defensive 3 - jam the line. This'll be cool to watch, because the only C I've seen Vince have trouble with is Indy's Jeff Saturday. Battle in the pigpile; this oughta be fun. Advantage: Patriots
MATCHUP THREE: Patriots RB Kevin Faulk vs Bills MLB Paul Posluszny
MaPatsFan, Pats Pulpit: Paul is sitting 23rd overall for total tackles; not too shabby for a young mike who missed a lot of 2007 with a broken arm. Did I mention he's right behind New England's rookie ILB Jerod Mayo? Just thought I'd letcha know. I think this will be interesting because the Pats have been using rookie RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis quite a bit and he's doing very well. My sense is they'll let BenJarvus take the lumps and then bring Faulk in for the third down conversions, similar to his role of past years. Green-Ellis has been coming along nicely which frees Faulk up for those conversions and options. If Posluszny isn't smart, he'll get burned by Faulk who does everything from running to receiving to blocking; he's an everything guy who's hard to keep track of. Advantage: Patriots
Brian Galliford, Buffalo Rumblings: Faulk is one of those guys that's both easy to respect and easy to hate just because of the player he is. MaPatsFan has this one right; Faulk will be protected by Green-Ellis until he's needed, and he's hurt the Bills in the past playing this exact role. He's never faced Posluszny, however; Paul has proven to be one of the best open-field tacklers I've ever seen. He kept San Diego's Darren Sproles and New York's Leon Washington largely under wraps, and they play similar roles to Faulk's in New England. I don't think Faulk is going to be particularly effective Sunday, though I do expect the Patriots to run well enough to keep themselves balanced. Advantage: Bills

Poz is one of the surest tacklers I’ve seen as well… If the Bills do not make mistakes, they should win this game… but haven’t we said this same statement the last two weeks? Moss win not be an issue this week… Cassel just hasn’t gotten him the ball deep all year and I’m confident that Greer and McGee will be able to keep him honest… This will by far be the biggest game of the season for the Bills so far this season…

My matchup for this week
Richard Seymour vs. Jason Peters… I will be watching this matchup all day… Peters has in my opinion, regressed since the retirement of McNally… (as a matter of fact, the entire OLine for that matter). Peters lateral movement has been slow this year. A problem that I thought was due to him being out of shape in September, but now that it is November, that excuse should not be there. Seymour has 4 sacks this year and looks as dominant as usual. If Peters has another poor game, the rushing attack will suffer, thus putting all the pressure on Edwards once again… And as good as Edwards has been this year, we all know that it’s still a little early to put the team on his shoulders…

Interesting point, considering Dockery will be helping out with Wilfork 90% of the day. Peters is going to have to handle Big Rich by himself. Could be ugly at times…

I’ve been really annoyed Cassel hasn’t developed that deep ball with Moss; that’s a real weapon for us that’s just not in use this season, sans Brady. They keep turning him inside where he’s lanky and uncoordinated. Some hungry young mike (Poz anyone?) is gonna lay him out one of these days.

Greer in the past has held his own against Moss and without Brady it should be a lil easier.
Also Like said a lil farther down Seymor against Peters will be interesting

Greer in the past has held his own against Moss
Wow, this isn’t even CLOSE to being the case. Greer didn’t play much – if at all – until last season, and when he played last season, he spent most of his time on Moss. How’d he fare? Not even close to “holding his own”.
Moss in 2 games against the Bills last year: 15 catches, 243 yards, 6 TD. PUKE

Kevin Faulk is the type of guy who can and will kill us if given the chance. The underneath dumpoffs that Cassel is living on and that Faulk excels at are what concern me.

Faulk has made a career as a Bills killer. Poz needs to be exceptionally wary of him. I would be leaning more towards a push or a mild Pats advantage on this one. The Bills have had some containment problems on plays where someone like Faulk could shine. I’m more concerned about him than I am about Greer covering Moss.

Greer will be fine
I’m sorry, but i don’t buy Moss being able to torch Greer without Brady. just not going to happen. the height advantage is worrisome, but i’m not sure Cassel will get the ball in the right spot. regardless, they won’t need moss to beat the bills this week

Re: Faulk. Sure, he’s killed us, but as I said, Poz handled Sproles and Leon Washington (save one big screen by Washington, which in reality was Ko Simpson’s fault). I don’t see Faulk being too much of a problem for us, though he’ll convert a few third downs to irritate us.

Lee Evans vs. NE Double Team
Lee Evans has to get open in this game because without Josh Reed, with Hardy doing little to nothing for this team so far, and with the running game a mess you know that Bellicheck is going to use a safety and a corner to try and blanket Evans. I feel like we are basically entering this game like we have so many in years past, with the opposing team only fearing Evans. He needs to get open or Derek Fine needs to make them pay for ignoring him.

Roscoe Parrish vs. NE Secondary
Agreed, Evans will be doubled, regressing to the troubles he had last year. Evans is an elite receiver but even with his skill its hard to consistently rub off double teams all day. Obviously Hardy and Johnson will need to make more than a catch, but watching Roscoe, our most experienced WR outside of Reed and the aforementioned Evans, will be interesting. He isn’t used nearly enough, he wants more touches, so get him the ball. Look for him to play a Welker role in this one. The Pats have a lot of trouble in the secondary, and even if he’s not used on bubble screens, he is great at finding the soft spots in the zones.
ADVANTAGE: BILLS

and then hopefully
If Roscoe can be successful underneath eventually there will be a slight opening for Evans deep. We really haven’t gone deep in either of the last two losses. We need to start taking shots again.

Bills Pass Rush vs. Patriots Pass Protection
Another matchup we can win as ridiculous as it sounds. Cassel gets sacked…a lot…i think he leads the league in sacks. If there was ever a time for our d-line to have a Seattle like performance again it is Sunday. We have to bring Cassel down or at least rattle him and rush his throws.

Cassel and sacks
Luckily, he wasn’t sacked once against Indy, but that was at a cost. Freeney and Mathis were kept at bay by keeping our TEs on the line for blocking duties. We lost those big guys as receivers in the process.

Cassel and sacks part 2
Does Cassel take sacks because he’s still slow to read plays developing or did the giants performance in the superbowl (sorry to bring up bad memories there) signal the decline of a once dominant o-line because of aging?

start of season
as far as i could tell it was his progressions and not being comfortable out there. the line did give up some sacks, but they are not a weak point. definately performing better than our line….but thats not exactly tough to do.
maybe someone should put a cupcake at the firstdown marker and make them go get it.

I don't get
why, if we can’t run, we don’t use screens more to keep the defense honest. When you can’t run you still have to find a way to use your backs, ie screens and draws out of the shotgun

Fewell & DJ specifically
I think Fewell is in over his head at times to be honest. DJ has issues it seems with talent evaluation. sometimes i see players that you can just see have the gamers mentality, but it takes 2 years for DJ and company to put them in.
i’m just being whiney too….getting frustrated because i’m not expecting a victory and 0-3 in the division sucks

i hope we win so bad
because I’m making the trip to Boston for the game and I will not be able to stand being in a sea of Pats fans as we drop three straight divisional games. I am excited to see Gillette Stadium though.
As for the coaching, you have to wonder if DJ is part of the problem defensively in stubbornly refusing to switch things up or if he’ll end up being the guy who presses Fewell to make some changes.

could be wrong but I’m not so sure the fans at Gillette are going to be a problem. From first hand experience I know Jets fans can be a bit rowdy. I don’t understand what problems we have defensively outside of personnel. If you know Jauron, he lets his coordinators alone, lets them do their thing. I don’t think he tinkers heavily – i.e., in the way you suggest – until the off-season.
The D is not costing us games; mistakes offensively are. That is where the real progress needs to be made.

true but...
you have to admit, the short passing game is absolutely shredding our defense. Chad Pennington did it and then watching Favre just abuse us with that 90 yard drive last game was brutal. Also, Warner had some nice drives on us too, through the air. It’s painful when you watch opposing QBs get into a rhythm in the short passing game because you start to get that sinking feeling that the driving is ending in 7 pts for the other team.

Yes, but I tend to believe that that attack has more to do with a less disruptive line than scheme. Schobel being out has impacted us negatively more than a lot of people realize, if only because he demanded attention.

It’s a good point, but we don’t have an “elite” pass rusher, so we passed on this matchup for this reason. If we’d done it, we’d have called it “Bills blitz vs Patriots pass game”.

risk vs reward
if we bring mitchell (if he plays) or Poz on blitzes (or even Scott), it looks like the Pats have the tools, Welker and Watson, to make us pay. Basically our blitzes have to be effective if we’re going to use them or we will get burned. This I guess comes down to Stroud and Williams causing havoc like they used to. I would love to see us get after Cassel but we need our d-line to at least occupy blockers.
