Trent and Play Calling

Why does everyone give Trent Edwards a free pass.  I am tired of saying we are building for the future and afraid to hurt ego's.  We are not good enought to protect anyone's ego.  He turned the ball over 3 times in the 4th quarter against Miami, 3 times against the Jets.  Trent turns it over twice and until bascially McKelvin houses one to the 14 we put up 3 with GREAT FIELD POSITION.  Sorry, he deserves to have his job evaluated and I would hope JP would start next week.  Trent is supposed to control the clock, we are last in the NFL in drives of 10 plays or more with 9.  JP never had a line, now Trent is learning what that is like.  He needs to avoid the rush, he needs to make good decisions, he doesn't have the physical ability to be an avg decision maker...that is why he plays because he is suppose to think out there.   THis is the NFL and players need to be men and accountable.  Unfortunately for Edwards the QB is the most criticized position.

This is not a player who has done it before this is a 3rd round draft pick who threw a terrible pick against the Boys last year and could only score 3 points on the road against the Jets last year b/f JP came in.  Last year we gave him a free pass the last few games due to the weather.  Everyone wants him to be Brady but he isn't.  If you really break down his games this year the only game he was really solid was the Chargers.  Believe it or not hte Chargers might have the worst D in the NFL.  Seattle it was special teams and D, Jax he had a great opening drive and 4th quarter but an awful middle.  Rams he was nonexistant in the first half and we won thanks to a Greer int that changed the game.  He says the correct things...PERSONALLY I WANT HIM TO SUCCEED...I LIKE TRENT...but maybe the reality is he is just not that good.  Was he a winner at Stanford...NOpe.

Today's game he missed balls to Lynch, threw hard when he needed to place it is a spot, when he tried to be accurate he misplaced (I remeber bad balls to Parrish and Hardy).   He took sacks, he turned it over.  But it not just today's game it has been the last 3 and most of the Oakland games, 2.5 quarters on the Jax game, half the Rams game, and half the Seahawks game.  Again...If you say we are building for a future...OK...Trent stays on the fielf good or bad, but then accept this season is done.  I for one am tired of the execuse that we are building for the future.  I want to win now.  I think the D is good enough to get us a wildcard spot.  I want JP even if I know it stunts Trent's growth and knowing JP is gone next year because I think he gives us the best chance to win this year.  Maybe that is shortsighted but I am not convinced Trent is a quality QB or ever will be.

I was going to rant on the Shotgun formation, abandoning the run (was running for 7 yards on the first play not enough?), using a Timeout to punt when we could have used it at the end of the half, the botched challenge, but this post on Edwards was long enough already.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I really hope you re-consider opening that can of worms. Can we NOT make the same mistake with Edwards that we made with Losman? I agree he needs to play better (Edwards), but to J.P. him would be THE BIGGEST MISTAKE this franchise could make.

agree w brian

Trent sucked today. Almost all of his throws were off, and he deserves all the bad press coming his way. But the one thing that could ruin any chance of turning this around would be to start JP right now. I am not going to post any more on the subject. Edwards is the man for the near future. His confidence will be back, but for now we suffer again as Bill faithful.

Maybe

I was always of the opinion that JP got judged unfairly for a very bad O-line and Offensive Coordinator. I as everyone else had high hopes for him in 07 after his solid end to 06. Keep in mind the o-line really made his life tough as well. But I dont think JP was as bad as Trent has been recently. Maybe he was that bad, and I am only remembering what I choose to remeber. I have been extremely skeptical of Trent as I remember the Jets/Dallas/Baltimore/Eagles/Giants/Browns game from last year. My posts here would be consistent with that in the offseason.

Basically, we are putting faith in this coaching staff and the fact that they “SEE” something special in him. Should we really trust the staff? This is the same staff that is throwing repeatedly on 3rd and 1. Cant get challenges right (This goes back to the Chargers game in 06 when Jauron botched one with about 3 minutes left in the first half), cant use Timeouts properly for the second week in a row, and decides after running for 7 yards on the first play that he best thing to do is go into shotgun and 5 wide with no protection (Last time I checked we are not Texas Tech).

So, as a fan, I must rely on the coaches and the fact that the “SEE” something special in him. Maybe. But from what I have seen from watching every game and every single snap I dont see it with Edwards. I think it is the Bills fans view of wanting something great (Wanting Trent to be Brady), and if you look at all the games he has played he has been above average in only 4. jets at home last year, miami at home last year and Chargers this year (Again at home), and I suppose we can throw in the Skins however I dont know how solid he was throughout. Maybe you are right that I need to be more patient but I have been hearing that for a decade now.

Unfortunately J.P. is done in Buffalo

There is no reason to make this switch now because J.P. Losman will not be here next year. I agree with you that Edwards is not now and may never be the QB of the future but it doesn’t makes ense to make this change now. I never really understood the move last season…I thought it was done to make the fans happy instead of what was better for the team.

The bottom line is that they made a decision that Trent would be the QB of the team and now that is a decision that they need to live with. Playing J.P. at this point would be a huge mistake.

Enough w/JP

We’ve watched this guy STINK over and over. No matter how bad Trent plays, we can’t go back to that pile of suckitude. Losman can do nothing but throw the long ball. At least Trent has other redeeming qualities.

Plus, I want to see if Edwards really does have what it takes. Let him continue playing and prove to us what he is. I don’t want to see him in and out of the lineup. That’s not going to help this team going forward.

What are his redeeming qualities?

I say this not be negative but because I’m not sure. I know the game isn’t all about statistics but last season Losman was statistically better than Edwards was and yet we had to hear about J.P.’s suckitude and how great Edwards was.

As I stated above I don’t want them to change to J.P. but I’m not sure what has been so great about Edwards. Keep in mind that I am not basing this on the past three weeks I am instead basing this on his career up till this point.

I suspect there have been more residual effects from the concussion than have been reported.

Yes, he had a good Chargers game afterwards, but the Chargers’ D is really bad. I think the concussion has had a lasting impact.

The team as a whole

I guess I am in the minority when I believe the pieces are in place if Bulter, Schobel, Reed, and Whitner get healthy for a superbowl run. NOt a playoff run but a superbowl run, however I believe the QB play is holding us back. Maybe I am delusional but I honestly think Butler and Schobel make huge differences on the line and the AFC is so weak that the Bills can win it. Therefore, I am of the opinion that the Bills need to do what is in the best interest to win this year which I believe is JP. There are certainly viable arguments that Edwards is better right NOW than JP however I disagree. RIght now I believe two things, the pieces are in place and JP at present is better than Edwards at present. I do not in any way believe this is a good move long term (I doubt anyone does). I think we are better than the Pats, Jets, Fins even though we lost to them and I think the Titans are beatable, same with the Steelers, and the COlts will have a tough time making the playoffs.

I am not usually an optimistic fan but I really was not that discouraged with the team excluding the coaching and QB play. Since I am a Jauron supporter and believe they will figure it out from a coaching perspective it leaves only one fix.

Why is JP the best for this year?

You think that guy wants to be here? We don’t need a lame duck QB ‘leading’ us.

How are we better than the other 3 AFC East teams? Have you not watched us get punished 3 weeks in a row by them? Those teams imposed their will on us and we crumbled.

Miami: 4 TO’s in 4th Q. Thought we out played them and gave it away. Game plays diff w. a healthy McGee and 1 TO as oppose to 4.

Jets: Trent Edwards cost us the game with his TOs. 3 TO’s. D was big early until they deflated when we couldn’t score

Pats: Trent Edwards and poor offensive play calling cost us the game. 2 TO’s. D again plays well until they were gassed in the 4th bc the offence couldn’t score.

Did we really get punished in any of those games. All three losses were by 10 pts or less, 2 games on the road, we turned the ball over a ton and we were missing some key players. Butler will vastly improve the online when he returns. Same w. Schobel. Denney will suffice subbing in for Kelsay here and there. I think Butler is an extremely underrated guard. Maybe our best lineman.

Players certainly get up to play for their contract. JP would play for his future.

Seriously, let’s please stop with the JP talk. We’re not Browns fans. It’s Edwards or bust; Losman wouldn’t get the job done.

Ok

Hey, I’ll stop with the JP talk. However, that is my opinion. I hope Edwards proves me wrong. I am still rooting for the kid. I am not that angry about this loss, I actually saw a lot of good in the team as a whole.

I will be back in Blo for my 3rd game this season (Live in Atl, gone to Jax & Miami), sitting in the Jim Kelly club with the family’s season seats. We will be tailgating at some point (me and my brother) so If anyone wants to meet up just let me know where you will be.

FYI: I consider myself and educated Bills fan, my thoughts were not based on anger. But then again I never jumped on the Edwards band waggon last year.

We understand your Trent concerns. We have them to.

I, personally, think the problem with your reasoning is Losman is the guy you’re calling for. Putting Losman in does nothing to help this team now or more importantly, in the future. Edwards needs to continue learning, playing and growing from mistakes. Pulling him out is just going to stunt his growth and make it much harder for him to become the QB we all hope he can become. He needs to learn from games like today’s by playing through the issues. That’s the only way he’ll grow from them.

by Brian Galliford on Nov 9, 2008 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Brian: Yes, MNF. We are loooking for a decent tailgate.

Kurupt: I understand the anti JP stuff, but I believe the last 8 games of 06 are closer to what he is capable of then the first 8 in 07. If I didn’t have such high regard for the Def (WHen healthy) and S. Teams I would never believe this would be the right direction either.

by Berg79 on Nov 9, 2008 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

In case you didn’t notice JP had 3 glorious turnovers in AZ….

Yes, those teams made us play their games. The Pats had 15+ more minutes of time of possesssion! The Dolphins made us eat their short passing game and Ted Ginn all day. The Jets D completely overwhelmed our OL. Sure, we weren’t punished in every facet of the game, but those teams did more to us than we did to them.

calm down

i know we are all upset as hell but bringing up JP is not going to solve anything.

Trent missed throws today. He also got hit a ton again. And when every time you go shotgun the opposing team knows you will be passing, they can just tee off on the QB. Turk pisses me off lately. The predictability is uncanning. I just cannot believe it.

The formula of Jauron, if he wants to continue to play his base Tampa 2 that makes no plays is to score 20 + offensive points, not turn the ball over, and run the crap out of the ball. The Offense can’t do that, and that is Turk/Trent responsibility with the other pieces doing their part. However you want to cut it, it is up to Trent & turk to get this thing figured out. Cuz Jauron clearly has no offensive education in his job history

Trent hurt his throwing hand

It looked like that may have effected his throw on the second interception. Maybe he should have come out of the game for a few plays. His decision to stay in possibly cost them the game. I know no player wants to come out of a game but if he couldn’t grip the ball he should have at least called a time out or a run play, not a 20 yard pass attempt.

Injuries

I’m not trying to give excuse to Edwards’ play recently, but could his bad plays be linked to his concussion and hand injury?

I personally thought the Bills brought Edwards back too early after the concussion, but I’m not a doctor and the Bills’ medical staff should have had a proper evaluation of him to give the go-ahead. Could the Bills medical staff give some info on Trent’s reaction time before and after the concussion? Could the pass plays be mostly called upon shotgun formation be due to the fact that Edwards needs that extra split second to make a decision? Sorta like compensating for his reduced reaction time after the concussion? Someone should compare the number of pass plays under shotgun formation PRIOR to Edwards’ concussion.

Just desperately trying to look for more answers……..
