Dick Jauron's Press Conference
MARVelous posted it in the long Jauron thread, but I thought I'd make it into a FanPost.
Here is the link for your listening and viewing pleasure.
Complimenting the D, specifically Denney and Kelsay
The answer to the question about getting Trent accustomed to the weather really irked me though. He says he doesn't know how you can get used to playing outside in that type of weather. Here's a hint....PRACTICE outside. The Bills routinely play a good portion of their games in inclement weather, either at home or against other AFC East teams, and other northern teams. Why they continue to practice full-time indoors when it starts getting cold and sloppy out just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm not saying spending every minute of practice out in the elements, but you've gotta get your team used to playing in that type of cold and precipitation. This team HAS to spend some time outdoors in order to acclimate themselves to the conditions and to give themselves an advantage over the opposition. There's no reason SF should come into Buffalo and look like the team that routinely plays in this weather. This should be second nature to a team from Buffalo, like it is to the Packers, Steelers, Giants, Patriots. Trent also needs to simulate playing in the weather. Go out and throw a drenched, frozen football. That'll only help him come game time.
I'm absolutely thrilled that Jauron called out Turk, FINALLY. After a question about Lynch getting one carry in the 4th Q, he immediately says:
"I wish he would have touched the ball more, obviously"
Nothing else, just that. Hope Turk feels the jab....
Also, Jauron always takes the blame and covers for everyone. I do like that about him.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

If everything is so obvious to Jauron why doesn’t he obviously see these things during the game? yesterday isn’t the first time that we should have continued to pound the ball.

I find it ironic that our next best chance for a win will be against Miami – not because they are Miami, or that we’re playing at “home” but because “home field” in this case is Toronto and our offense will be playing in the comfort of the Rogers Centre.

How can they not practice outdoors?
That is unforgivable. It’s not like crowd noise where you recreate the effect. The fact that we practice indoors all the time is confusing. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail, or something like that.

1000000% agree
When you KNOW the weather is going to be bad, why are you not doing everything you possibly can to simulate that and get used to it???? I can see this week not practicing outdoors that much, or at all, since the game will be in a dome, but there’s no reason to have no practice time outdoors before a game like yesterday….

Lately, these press conferences make me feel bad. Dick is visually hard to watch; the way he touches his cheek and forehead constantly shows how much he is uncomfortable in front of this group. The reporters are even kinda chummy, the way they frame the questions for easy awnsers.
This whole subject is a tiny bit silly, when the real statements have already been made on the field. Yes, I will always watch the post-game interviews, and be glad that we can discuss the reactions of the coaches and players, but at the same time we know 99% of the Q&A is dogmatic rhetoric. Nothing profound here.
My point is how squirmy DJ seems this week, when I am so used to his stoic demeanor. He is feeling the heat, like he should.
Great point about outdoor practice, BTW.
Sweet home Orchard Park.

I totally agree about practicing outdoors. Even if the team just spends one practice, or half a practice each week outdoors it could make a huge difference. How about they even just turn the heat off in the facility one day and make everybody practice in a nice sterile 20 degree environment. This team does not like playing in cold weather and that is pathetic.
but at the same time we know 99% of the Q&A is dogmatic rhetoric. Nothing profound here
That is the way I feel about interviews in general. I rarely care what coaches and players are saying after games.
Good to see him point out how not terrible Kelsay and Denney played. It’s no coincidence we had one of our best defensive performances of the season when we got average DE play.

Outdoor weather and practice
So let me get this right:
One one hand we have 53 guys plus another 6 who make more money than 95% of their fan base who practice indoors in a nice temperature controlled environment the whole week before playing a game outside in the cold and snow in Nov. And then they play like dog doo doing so.
On the other hand, the NY state football playoffs started about a week ago, after all the Sectional championships have been played, and will not move indoors to the Syracuse Dome until this weekend now that Syracuse has finished its season for the state championships (please go easy on me, its been 10 years since I last played a HS game and I could be off by a week on the schedule for that.). Anyhow, my team practiced outside, every day during the week before the big game, regardless of where it was played inside or out, because our coaches understood that by being able to execute in inclement weather meant that we would play as well if the weather was bad game day, and acutally play BETTER in good conditions since we were not fighting the elements as well. Btw, my HS since Section 3 in Central NY was formed went to playoffs and deep for nearly 20 years straight at the highest level, what does that tell you?
So who has it right here? The Pros who are wimping out because the coaches appear to be afraid of the cold and will not even consider going outside for a days worth of practice? Or the HS coach who was smart enough to know that team can only play in bad weather if it freaking practices in the same conditions? No brainer to me, you play in a cold weather area, practice in cold weather.

Did you HS have an indoor practice facility or something????

Nope, just one hell of a large gym
We would practice indoor if there was lighting, so we all made sure to keep running shoes handy. If there had to be contact, we would move it into the wrestling room which had a rubber floor and pads on the walls.
In college, we did have an indoor faciltiy for practice, that was nice, especially once they got rid of the dirt floor and put in fieldturf there.

One question
Does anyone actually know if the Bills of the early 90s ever practiced outdoors. I know they were great in the elements (ripping up Marino’s Dolphins every time they came Orchard Park), but did they actually practice in it regularly? How often?
by thefourwinds on Dec 1, 2008 8:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I believe the Fieldhouse was opened in October of 1995. So unless they had an indoor facility beforehand, then no those guys did not practice indoors during the glory days….

Outside
Last night, in the freezing rain and snow, I played football outside under some street lights just as an experiment.
Without boring you, my conclusion is not only should the Bills practice once a week, or at least for aout twenty minutes every practice outside, but Trent needs to keep moving on the sidelines…throwing the ball around, etc. I mean these guys are professional athletes, certainly he can keep the heart rate up on the sideline without exhausting himself.
When I was throwing it around, after about 5-10 minutes of running around and throwing, my bare hands became accustomed, and the regulation ball stuck to my hand nicely and I was able to throw spirals with decent accuracy. Surely Trent could do the same. This is all trickle down from the coach. They play scared; scared to run Lynch too many times so he isn’t injured, scared to practice in the snow to evade illness or injury and scared to go with his gut, and pick the right dam play to get the touchdown.
Time for a pink slip.

Too lazy to do the research....
But honestly, how many NFL teams practice outdoors anymore during inclement weather? I really don’t think any of them do anymore. I couldn’t find a link but can somebody correct me if I am wrong?

I think the Bills should practice outdoors a little bit too but ……
I searched and searched to find out if any northern team actually practice outdoors still too. I couldn’t find anything as well and would love to know the answer. I think Jauron is to blame for keeping the team indoors, but it sure seems like everybody overreacts to every decision Juaron makes despite whether or not every HC in the league would do the same thing.

Steelers
Q. The Steelers play outside on a grass surface at Heinz Field. How do you decide whether to practice inside or outside during the week, now that winter is coming to Western Pennsylvania?
A. I stay outside if at all possible. The only things that take me inside are inclement weather and footing that may be conducive to people getting hurt. Those are the factors that I weigh, but I’ll always stay with the premise that we practice outside if at all possible.
Mike Tomlin sure doesn’t seem to have a problem staying outside. Of course, practicing out in the sleet or a snow storm isn’t wise, but practicing when it’s 25 degrees sure can help. Having the QB’s and WR’s just out practicing/throwing in the elements would also help….
I love Tomlin’s attitude and love his demeanor overall. Just a tough SOB that demands the same of his players. Sure, he may not be the best X and O’s coach, but that type of attitude can sure rub off on his players in a very positive way….

Great Post K
Didn’t realize that they always practice indoors – bunch of morons!
I used to look at all the conferences but it is so fake that it really started to get on my nerves. Not one reporter has the guts to really put them on the spot and ask a real question
Regarding the “drenched” ball comment, I though the receiving team prepared 20-30 balls for the game, meaning that the ball is normally new to start the series so it really doesn’t have time to get “drenched”, cold & wet yes.
Tks for the link for the Tomlin quote – good one! A coach is there to coach not be their friend, I have always liked coaches like Bill Parcells, because he is tough as nails and doesn’t take sh%t from nobody and yet the players play hard for him because he’s earned their trust and they know this guys knows what he’s doing – funny but I really don’t get that from Jauron…

I might agree with being outside.....
when its cold…but not inclemate (as Tomlin seems to agree with). I think all these southern and California boys need to toughen up. I just think its its an overall toughness attitude that we lack for the most part. That come down to the overall team philosphy (coach).
