Got Dolphins Questions?
Hello Toronto Bills fans,
(That just sounds too weird)
Many of you probably know me from our "Around the AFC East" segment that we did before the season. For those that don't, I'm the guy who runs the Miami Dolphins blog on SB Nation - The Phinsider.
As we prepare for Dolphins/Bills - Round 2 - I wanted to come over here and see if any of you had any Dolphin-related questions for me.
So shoot me some topics and I'll check in from time to time and answer them best I can.

No way!
I’ve learned never to underestimate an opponent. Fact is the Dolphins have beaten the Seahawks, Raiders, and Rams by a combined total of 8 points. And I’d be lying if I didn’t proclaim openly that I’m very nervous about this game. The Bills will be angry after their loss on Sunday and are essentially playing for their playoff lives. A loss would probably put an end to any playoff thoughts for the Bills – and that has me scared.
Nothing worse than playing against a desperate team.

They’ve been “despearate” for the last three weeks. I wouldn’t worry about them suddenly turning it on.

Exactly
Losing at home against the Browns and 49ers when your back is up against the wall pretty much shows what kind of desperation this team is playing with….

If they don’t, then somebody within the organization deserves to be fired.
All I need is to hear that Ronnie Brown can’t make the game because he never got a passport.

Matty,
What’s the injury status of your guys? I read that a very happy player on your team just broke his leg. Is there any other injury concerns you have right now?
by jj24 on Dec 1, 2008 4:54 PM EST 0 recs
haha
a “very happy player” – that’s classic.
Yes – Justin Smiley is done for the year, which hurts big time. Greg Camarillo, our leading receiver, suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Pats two games ago. But other than that, I don’t have any concerns. Ricky Williams left the game after tweaking an ankle on Sunday – but later returned.
Jason Allen, who has been our nickelback the past few weeks, missed yesterday’s game with a “hand/wrist” injury – forcing Joey Thomas into the nickel role. The result? Two pass interference penalties on St. Louis’ first drive to help get them in position for a FG. He also allowed at least 2 3rd down conversion completions. So Jason Allen’s health will be something to monitor this week.

Thank you.
We’ve been dinged up in the secondary, too. That’s where we’ve been getting beat on defense. Not with the effiiciency that Chad Pencilington demonstrated against us earlier this year, but still pretty bad. It we don’t pull out a miracle division-winning run, I hope you guys get it. Good luck, bro.

never root for the phins….I am amazed at your guys turnaround and I’m sure Brian has more in store later this week comparing our two franchises (at least I hope) cuz seeing your turn around is pretty amazing. The complete cleaning house, the amazing player acquisitions, draft, all of it. Most importantly though has been you picking up Pennington undoubtedly IMO. Without him, you guys maybe have 4-5 wins and not 7 for sure. Do you see Pennington as a long term solution?
Also, what can you say to us Bills fans muddering in mediocrity under the Jauron regime? From an outside divisional perspective any thoughts? I mean you guys suffered thru Saban and Cameron, and then boom you get a savior in Parcells….man I’m jealous

RE:
First, about Pennington, he absolutely has been the key to this team’s success. As far as a long-term solution, I think CP can handle the starting job for another year or two. But at some point, it will be time for Chad Henne.
Secondly, I’m not sure what to say. As an outsider, I really thought Jauron had this team headed in the right direction. But I think the regression of Trent Edwards is worrisome. I was never really sold on him – just like I was never sold on Losman. But I think the Bills are one good veteran QB (like CP) away from breaking out.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit :)
Congrats on the turn around. Sparano & Parcells have definitely given your team a new attitude this year. It has been the diffferece between losing all of those close games last year to where you guys are at now. I love Tony’s and Bill’s roughneck attitude, and it appears to be paying dividends for you guys so far.
How do you see your squads’ outlook for the next 3 years?

Hating on Beck from the Toronto crowd. That hurts. Poor kid. All he did was try to win football games on a bad team.

He did
Won’t lie for him.
I’m just afraid that we will ship him off and not see what he can be. Obviously he was selected in the 2nd round for a reason (even if CamCam did it), and no one was really surprised by that pick (especially when compared to the Ginn pick in the first round), so he can’t be all that bad.
Hopefully we will give him another year or so and see what he can be. Then, if there’s not anything worth holding on to, then we get rid of him.

Next 3 years:
Probably a step back in 2009 – record wise. That’s generally what happens. Then I think 2010 is when things really get rolling with a serious playoff push.
But a lot depends on how this team handles the QB situation. If Pennington stays healthy, do they have him start next year? Do they have him start for the next 2 years (would have to give him an extension, as he only signed a 2 year deal). Or do they give the reigns to Henne sooner rather than later?
Interesting storyline to unfold at some point.

Absolutely, how could they not?
Two years down the road is where things get interesting. So much of the Dolphins future is in Chad Henne’s hands. The Dolphins could become a perenial super bowl contender if he is the real deal, or they could go into a parcells is gone and our QB is a bust tailspin and complete rebuild mode in 3 years too.

As Buffalo spends year after year in mediocrity there are a lot of fans that have used Miami as an example of how quickly you can turn things around. I’ve pointed out that Miami lost 7 games last year by three points despite having some of the worst QB play that I have ever witnessed. I’ve argued that the step up from Beck and Lemon to Pennington has led to most of your success. So …..
Is Miami’s resurgence mostly due to Pennington? How much credit should Parcell’s other personel moves get (Ferguson, Fasano, Smiley, Ayodele, Starks, Long, Merling)? Has the ingame coaching, playcalling etc… been better than last year?
Basically, is Miami really that much better than last year, or were they just an average team with terrible QBs, that added a couple nice pieces and a good QB and emerged into an above average team with an above average QB?
by kaisertown on Dec 1, 2008 5:37 PM EST 0 recs
Good question
No doubt, Pennington has been the most important key to Miami’s turnaround.
But there are a lot of other reasons. Jason Ferguson’s acquisition was key because, to run a 3-4, you need that big NT. Justin Smiley, who is done for the year now, was a big factor in Jake Long’s development because they played next to each other. Randy Starks, Phillip Merling, and Kendall Langford were big acquisitions that helped improve Miami’s DL.
But one of the other keys has been the RB play. Last year, Ronnie Brown only played in 7 games and Ricky Williams only got in for like 2 or 3 plays. So having those 2 back and healthy makes a big difference.
But I agree with you that the Dolphins shouldn’t have been as bad as they were last year. But with that said, only about 20 players from last year’s team remain. So the moves that Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland orchestrated have been brilliant – with the exception of Ernest Wilford – and those two deserve a lot of credit.
Oh – and having a capable head coach also helps.

The turnaround
How do you guys feel about the decent record/playoff hopes/beating the Pats (thank you)/solid season so far? (BTW, that is intended to set up a single focused question.)
Do you see this as any sort of fluke-ish-ness? Like, maybe teams underestimated the Fins for a while? Or is this for real, built for the long haul, quality? I don’t like to speak for other people, but I seem to remember Brian saying he was impressed with the ‘right-pieces-in-the-right-places’ aspect of Miami. Because I am so frustrated with Buffalo’s inability to move up the in the rankings, it hurts to agree, but I do. It seems as though Parcells has it in for the Bills.
That said, I would prefer if the Fins-Bills rivalry took top notice in the division, and the Pats faded into thin air.
Sweet home Orchard Park.

RE:
Yeah – I think we’d all agree that the Jets and Bills fading into oblivion would be a good thing. They are definitely my 2 most hated rivals. Your Bills are third – but I wouldn’t say it’s a close third.
Back to your question. I think a lot of the team’s success is for real. Again, I know I’ve said it like 2 or 3 times already, but Chad Pennington has been a savior for this team. So much so, in fact, that I’m going to be purchasing a big ol’ CP jersey – even if he’s only starting for 1 more season before Henne takes over. He’s been 1 million times better than I thought. I’ll admit it – I was dead wrong about him. I originally didn’t want the Fins to sign him. And now he’s like one of my 2 or 3 favorite players.
With that said, I do think the schedule has played a small part in Miami’s success. They lucked out and got to play the two worst divisions in football – the AFC West and NFC West (as every other AFC East team did). So far, against those 2 divisions, the Fins are 5-1. But next year, our AFC East teams play the AFC South and NFC South – a much tougher task. So it’s probable that they could take a step back, record-wise, in 2009. But that doesn’t make their success this year a fluke.

Did you guys play the 3-4 last year? I really don’t remember. I’m hoping you didn’t because many of would like to see the Bills move towards that type of D and it’d be nice to know if the transformation could be done in one offseason….
Will Ted Ginn have another career day this week? How bad has he been since the last matchup?
~K
by Kurupt on Dec 1, 2008 7:56 PM EST 0 recs
RE:
The Dolphins originally intended to run a 3-4 defense – with Jason Taylor and Joey Porter as OLBs. But injuries really prevented them from playing a true 3-4 defense. In fact, they were in a 4-3 more times than not – which is partly why Joey Porter had such a down year. So I won’t say the transformation was totally done in one offseason, but some of the key pieces were found this past offseason (Jason Ferguson, Phillip Merling, Kendall Langford). Since you guys have a potential NT already with Stroud, I’d say it can be done.
As for Ginn, he’s actually been quite good since the first meeting between these 2 teams. He’s averaged 4 catches for 60 yards in 5 games since his big breakout game against the Bills (but only 1 receiving TD). But he has also scored a 40 yard TD on a reverse.
But I’d keep the name Davone Bess in mind this week. He’s going to be the receiver that surprises you guys.

Edwards
will be fine and will be a good QB in this league. He had a concussion, an idiot play caller refusing to run the ball with one of the best RB’s in the NFL and the biggest OL in the NFL to take the load of our young signal caller. He has all the tools to be a decade long starter in the NFL.
I would say I’d rather have our guy, then have a stop gap in Pennington like Parcells has done his last few years with the Brad Johnson’s and Testaverde’s of the world. Sure they are good game managers but you can never go anywhere with them. Trent isn’t this all world QB he was made out to be in the beginning of the season, but with him, lynch, evans, Jason-Peters back to pro bowl form, our offense has all the parts to be good down the road if we ever find an offensive coach

The Toronto thing is funny. Of all the games to move, this one was probably not a good choice. Probably figured you could beat up on us in Toronto, build the fan base, and not lose a home game against a good team. Then, we became a good team, and you are in a dog fight for the Division.
