A possibility of 13 coaching changes?
Per Peter King in his MMQB column in things he thinks he thinks or whatev:
9. I think as many as 13 coaches may change in January.
So who do you think those 13 coaches COULD be? Here is my list
1. Dick Jauron - like we discussed today, IF they finish the season 1-9 he almost has to be gone and they way we are playing who here thinks they win another game?
2. Marvin Lewis - Cinci
3. Rod Marinelli - Detroit
4. Mike Holmgren - Seattle, Retiring
5. Mike Singeltary - Up in the air if they'll lift the interim title
6. Tom Cable - Oakland - Al Davis & Ralph Wilson should go in peace
7. Gary Kubiak - Houston - similar deal as our Jauron
8. Romeo Crennel - Cleveland - pretty much for sure gone
9. Brad Childress - Minnesota - if they collapse and don't win the division I can attest he will be gone
10. Norv Turner - San Diego? - I think the owner said he was coming back but how can he?
11. Herm Edwards - Kansas City - is he their guy to rebuild with?
12. Jack Del Rio - Jacksonville - Has he lost control?
13. Jim Haslett - St Louis - Is he their guy?
Out of all of these I think the BILLS MIGHT, be interested in just as a candidate, strictly from the way Ralph works:
Jim Haslett - played LB for the Bills in the 80's
I would also think Jack Del Rio, Norv Turner, Herm Edwards would all be interesting candidates, noe of which I really like.
This got me to thinking today however. Kevin Gilbride under Coughlin is doing wonders with the Giants, Greg Williams under Gibbs/Zorn has been a stud with the Redskins, Mike Mularkey under Mike Smith is now doing wonders with rookie QB Matt Ryan in Atlanta, Wade Phillips is running a successful show in Dallas with a stud OC in Jason Garret.
My point is this: Successful coaching staffs have experienced, smart, veteran coaches that come from winning traditions on all 3 sides of the ball. They preach fundamentals, hammer on discipline, let the players know its TEAM before I,let their coordinators run their own units, and more or less just MANAGE the team on gamedays. But they also have to have talent on the field, and it seems some people on this site want to have it both ways. They say "we have screwed up drafts n FA, have a lack of talent on this roster and Dick Jauron is also a terrible coach." So which is it? Both???? Are we THAT BAD? I don't see that. I think the drafting and FA of the last 3 years has been very good and this team that has been built is young, talented, and most of all YOUNG. We have Dick Jauron who has been a head coach for 129 NFL regular season games, coached under Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, coached under Mike Holmgren in Green Bay. We have Fewell as DC, who if I'm correct came from Tampa Bay, and Schonert who has held nothing more than a QB coach role for various NFL teams. And the one and only Bobby April who is money coaching ST's. I think Jauron has what it takes to be a successful HC in this league. BUT HE NEEDS HELP! As you'll see above, coaches who failed in Buffalo have succeeded at other stops due to the talent around them and the great coaches that they have surrounded themselves with. Dick needs help. He needs an OC that really knows his stuff. He needs someone he trusts. Who that guy is I don't know, but before we say "it's all coaching" look at the past and that will help us be reasonable and predict the future.
I hope that this off-season Turk and maybe even Fewell find new jobs or are shown the door. If Dick can bring in talent around him then Ralph should let him. If not, I do believe hiring a coach that could bring in the best coaching staff should be hired. Which would mean Ralph would have to spend money on COACHES. Something he won't do. So, if that's the case...go get an OC and give Dick some help. This is the NFL...it's a damn competitive business. Turk has looked like an idiot with some predictable play calling for that 4 game stretch, ineptitude at understanding to call run plays, and his lack of experience as a OC. Don't let him kill a potential franchise QB in Trent Edwards.
Sound off Bills fans, for it's time to look ahead as this season is all but over for all intensive purposes. Is it talent? Is it Jauron? Is it Both? If Jauron brought in an offensive specialist as OC would that suffice?

There is little to no chance that Del Rio gets fired.
Fewell never coached in Tampa. He started at Vandy then coached the DBs in Jacksonville, St. Louis and Chicago before getting a coordinator job here. This is Fewell’s first job as a coordinator. Considering the injuries and average talent, I think he has done a terrific job though.
Jauron really deserves to be ripped apart for not only hiring Schonert, but not even interviewing other candidates. Jauron needs to be like so many head coaches who leaves one side of the ball entirely in the hands of a coordinator. He might even be doing that now with Turk, its tough to tell. But I have a hard time giving guys like Gruden credit for defensive success in Tampa when Kiffin runs that defense on his own. Same as Dungy and the Colts offense, Andy Reid and the Eagles D, Mike Tomlin and the Steeler D or Super Bowl winning and unemployed Brian Billick and that Ravens D. Its funny how much credit Billick, an offensive guy who let the D coaches do their thing, got credit for winning when he had very little say about the draft and the offense was only great when Jamal Lewis was great.
The Bills need an offensive coordinator who knows how to call a game and a quaterback (I still think Trent can be that guy) who knows how to execute it and I think people will be shocked at how capable of a head coach Dick Jauron is.

Billick Sucks
Like you said, it was Marvin Lewis who took care of business for the SB winning Baltimore Ravens. Billick consistently put terrible offenses on the field and kept blaming the coordinators. Billick gone = something of an offense in Baltimore.
And Billicks draft track record as far as his specialty, offense, was pretty terrible.

Not easy questions
Is it Juaron – To an extend. He can seem to those game time decisions. He gives his coaches free reigh, which I like, but doesn’t seem to know when he has to step in. He needs to go, but only if there is a better option.
Is it Fewell – I want to say yes, but he may have learned his lesson. I still want him to go because I want to got to the 3-4. I have had enough of the Tampon 2. It does not work in the AFC East. Everyone else knows this.
Is it Turk – YES!!!!! He is a bad OC. He needs to go, no question.
Is it talent – I hope not. We need a C, DE, LB. We could use another NT, LB, FS. Edwards in the big question mark for me. He needs to prove he can play in the cold. If Edwards can’t do it, we need to pick up a vet to take over until our next heir apparent can be drafted this year.
I used to think rebuilding took several years, but the Fins and Falcons have shown us different. If you pick the right HC and assistants, you can turn it around in a hurry.

Hold the presses
We need to see more years of the current Fins and Falcons before we decide they really turned it around. Many teams put a solid year together only to have all fall apart. See Jaguars, Jacksonville and Browns, Cleveland for current examples. A couple years ago it was Jets, New York in their first year under Mangini. The Jets are in for trouble in the next year or two because of the salary cap and Favre’s age.
As far as OC’s go, how would it be to bring in Charlie Weis if he is fired from Notre Dame?

Well the Jags had won 31 games over the last three seasons. I don’t think they really fit.
I’ve said this before about Miami, but I think they were a 6-10 or 7-9 team last year that just got saddled with abysmal QB play and a devasting injury to thier best player, Ronnie Brown. They added a solid QB in Pennington, had the first overall pick pick and added a couple nice pieces (Akin Ayodele, Jason Ferguson, Anthony Fasano) and now they are a 7-9 or 8-8 team that is actually taking advantage of an easy schedule. In a sense the turnaround is real, but I don’t think they are a team that is poised to compete for anything, anytime soon.
On the other hand, Atlanta is for real. They were in a world of trouble, but you can see some similarities with Miami, namely QB play. This is a quarterback league and when you go from the worst QB play in the league (Beck, Lemon, Redman, Harrington, Leftwich) to above average QB play, you are going to win games. If Trent plays like he did early in the year for all of next season, we will watch the Bills turn things around pretty quick too.

he really has no connection to the Bills and Ralph other than Trent played there, and Turk did as well. I wish Marv Levy had just stuck around another year or 2 and kept the stability….

that’s who I wanted as well….marv knew Jauron from chicago so maybe marv went with his heart instead of his head. But Jauron is no doubt Levy’s type of guy. But Jauron has proven he can’t hire big names….maybe Ralph won’t pay for it. But gosh, we need some smart coordinators to earn their money and get these guys straightened out, on the offensive side of the ball.
What ever happened to Mike Sherman?

Turns out aggressive, blitzing defenses don’t always work the best.

this is why I blame Jauron...
I had to dig in the WAY BACK machine to find this, one of my posts from January 18th 2008, From Brian’s front page story about the Bills hiring Schonert as OC:
my problem with this is not Schonert. He deserves a fair chance and the benefit of the doubt and I will give him that.
What I do have a problem with is the process and lack of effort by management (Wilson, front office guys, Jauron) to want to get better.
Who did the Bills interview for this job?
Schonert and appearantly RB coach Eric Studesville were the only candidates (interesting that in the buffalobills.com article, they had one line about Studesville being a candidate, but now that line is no longer there. Interesting).
Why limit your search when there are many other established candidates out there? Why not even interview any of them?
Cam Cameron
Al Saunders
Hue Jackson
Norm Chow
Brian Billick
Mike Shula
Chan Gailey
That’s as good of a list as you will ever see in an off-season. And if you don’t buy into that and say they are all failures for one reason or another then I guess you and the Bills are the only one on that side of the issue with organizations like San Franisco, St. Louis, Baltimore, KC, Tennessee, Miami, Atlanta, Washington on the other side of the issue. Even Denver (who said if Mike Heimerdinger goes to Tennessee, they would go after Chan Gailey) and Dallas (if garrett leaves, you know they would go after the most proven talen to replace him) have made stronger tries for established coordinators then Buffalo – and they aren’t even in the market for one!!
If that’s not enough, Garrett has indicated that his OC will be Cam Cameron if he gets a head coaching job. Now ask yourself this: If Garratt, a young up and coming, red-hot offensive assistant knows the important of getting the BEST OC possibile (even though he, himself, is more then qualified to handle the offense on his own) what does that tell you about the importance of having someone with prior success/experience calling the plays?
the evidence is overwhelming. If you want to win, you be aggressive and go after when you need to make that happens. The Bills had an amazing opportunity this off-season to change the face of their offense for the better, instead they tried to “play-it-safe” in the name of continuity.
Lastly, lets talk continuity for a minute. Continuity is only a good thing when there is something good to protect. I highly doubt that ANY sain person would be able to say that Buffalo had a good thing to perserve on offense that they didn’t want to disturb. All this continuity talk is just a mask, a disguise. It’s smokes and mirrors for what’s really going on. An owner who is penny-pinching and afraid of anyone outside his “circle-of-trust” and a head coach that is completely content with a mediocore/safe offense.
This is a team, and I am afraid more so, a fan base that has become content with mediocrity.
I hope Turk works out. I hope the Bills find a diamond in the rough. Diamonds are rare though, and often, it is more advantageous to go to the store and buy one that is already cut and polished for you in the store (and may be a little more money), then going out and hoping you find one in the rough.
For all of our sakes, lets hope Buffalo stumbled on a diamond.
I think i was pretty angry when I wrote that, and for good reason. It was Jauron who decided to promote Schonert without even bringing another person in to interview for the position. Schonert might be failing as OC, but it’s on Jauron for not even looking elsewhere.
John I.

glad you brought that back John
Agree 100%
I think we were all ticked that Schonert was just given the job without interviewing other, more qualified candidates. That was pretty discouraging and still is.
Dick Jauron hired the guy who would least disrupt the current setup and would cause the least amount of resistance. There was no reason we shouldn’t have gone after an experienced OC especially with a 2nd year QB. In retrospect, how stupid was it to go into the season with a rookie coordinator and a 2nd year QB???
I definitely agree with your continuity argument from before. What exactly do we want to continue? It’s not like we have some abundance of talent or look anything close to a Super Bowl contender. We’re a mediocre team, with a poor coaching staff and an owner that does more harm than good. And we want to continue going with what we’re doing??
I just wish Jauron would be held accountable for the crap that’s out on the field. From the continued questionable and stupid playcalling of his coordinators, to the poor game management and use of timeouts/challenges, to the playing scared and to the letting his team play so dang Charmin soft. We hear about the not wanting to disrupt “the plan” and not wanting to start over, but I don’t see why that’d be such a bad thing. We wouldn’t be scrapping the team and rebuilding. We’d be going with different leadership, something this team SORELY needs. We see the same old garbage out on the field in year 3 of this regime and there is no improvement, no signs of competency and more importantly, no winning….

I don’t want to sound like I disagree with you and John, because I don’t (at least about hiring Schonert), but the continuity thing wasn’t about keeping the status quo. Look at how different the offense is this year as opposed to last year. Not better, but different. The continuity was so Trent didn’t have to learn an entirely new system with new terminology in just his second season. You guys are right though, he could’ve handled it and with a better OC he would probably be better off right now in terms of development and on field success.
by kaisertown on Dec 2, 2008 12:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That was a good rant and I totally agree with most of it. The one thing I don’t agree with is when you mentioned Ralph. He has no say over who Jauron picks as coordinators. Isn’t Bobby April one of the two or three highest paid ST coordinators in the league? Ralph would probably be more than willing to dish out the extra 750K if Jauron went with one of the best as opposed to a rookie.
by kaisertown on Dec 2, 2008 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If your
looking for continuity why not give the head coaching job to Bobby April, he seems to get the best out of the special teams and the player like to play for him, and he has an emotional side to him from the interviews I’ve seen of him. The rest of the staff could stay so there is very little disruption to the differant sceams that they run. This would also entail getting a new O.C.

Ralph
you don’t think he has any say in who Jauron brings in? I would imagine he has a say when it comes to pay day. I mean I don’t know how much Jauron makes but the top coordinators make close to $2 million.
John, all great points and great foresight. I think we all just ate up the company line for the most part about Schonert. We were all relieved to see SF-M go and then we thought hey, Schonert, former QB maybe this is what we need. But he & Van Pelt, 2 terrible NFL QB’s, are not the guys we need leading this Offense. We need creativity, experience and veteran OC leadership

No. no say whatsoever other than a symbolic approval of whoever Jauron picks. I doubt the front office guys even get much if any say as to who Jauron picks.
Which coordinator is making 2 mil? I found an article from 2006 that say the average offensive coordinator was making about 575K. Even if that is up to a mil (which i doubt) the best coordinators would be making about 1.5 mil. Thats how I picked the 750K total thinking your average guy makes that much and one of the top guys would need an additional 750K to come here. I think Ralph would pay that if Jauron told him it was in the best interest of the organization. He isn’t nearly as cheap as people make him out to be. Wasn’t Levy one of the highest paid guys in the league by the time he left? I know he has never hired someone who came in at a high price, but coaches have been given contracts by Ralph that put them in the top 3rd of the league in pay. He is an owner who has spent big a number of players over the last couple of years. He would sign off on another 750K for a top coordinator.

Jason Garret
Greg Williams, Al Saunders, all those types I know are making close to $2 million, and Garret is making $2.5. I’m sure there are others well over a million.
What do you think Turk makes? I’d guess no more than $350k? But why should he

Check out the link above for new coach possibilities and who is likely to be gone. Interesting note, he lists 12 coaches and their likelihood of being pink-slipped. No mention of a certain gaunt-looking 716 area code coach in his list of possible pink slips. He gives Mike Mularkey a chance at a head coaching job, though.

I don't entirely agree with you MARV
I agree that our coordinators are the main problem, both Schonert & Fewel need to go. But it’s the job of the HC to do something about it and Jauron is way too soft. In his conference this week he made a small comment that he would have liked to get the ball to Lynch more in the fourth quarter..
The main problem that I have with Jauron is that he is not a head coach, he’s a babysitter. Someone you put in charge while the parents are away, someone that looks after the kids and doesn’t do much other than watch over them. I’ve watched him say each week (after each loos) that they need to execute better and work harder – never did I hear him say anything intelligent. It’s like he’s not even aware of the stupidity that went on during the games. Against the 49ers when you’re run game is clicking on all cylinders, when your stud RB is gauging them badly (something like 130+ yards in 3 quarters) how the hell can you justify that each time you got to the redzone you lined up in a spread (shotgun)? At least if your OC is pass happy and wants to pass, at the very minimum fake a run do a play-action but nooooooooo they go shotgun and fail miserably – not once, not twice but three friggin times.
Jauron is the worst game day coach I have ever seen. I understand that if he had good Coordinators around him but even then he still is the guy that will manage time outs and challenges and he is lousy at that too!! No way that this guy should keep his job!
As far as the previous coaches that are having sucess like Gilbride, Williams – remember that they are now coordinators and not head coaches. Mularkey needs to do it at least another year before I weigh into the debate. He is working with an exceptional run game and a great rookie QB/Receiver combo which helps a lot…
I still choose to hope that there is a chance at Cowher or Schottenheimer. Nobody from that list interests me at all. Brian suggested Russ Grimm as a possible candidate and I kinda liked the idea if Bill or Marty don’t work.
