Around SBN: Tottenham's Plans for Northumberland Stadium Approved

I hate when the off season starts before Xmas.

As usual, many of you have covered every topic under the sun regarding the Bills on this website.  For what it’s worth, here’s my two cents going forward…

As far as Jauron goes, I like the guy, and have stuck up for him this season.  Not with the verve that BG has, but nevertheless, I’ve been in the guys’ corner.  Until maybe now…

I think the light has gone on for me, but I reserve the right to change my mind, just in case I choose to do so.  As much as I don’t want to see him go completely, I don’t think I want to see him on the sideline next year.  I just don’t think (as many of you do) that he has the “it” that we want in our coach.  So what to do, what to do…

I’ve heard the following suggestion before (and I’ve even made it myself), that he’d be a decent addition to the front office.  Maybe that time is now?  I think he is a man of character, and in spite of his gaffes on the field, he may very well be a good influence on the organization off of the field.  The guy is a football lifer – he must have something to bring to the table with all of his NFL experience.  He certainly is well regarded around the league.  Maybe he could join the three headed triumvirate we have in Brandon, Guy, and Modrak.  Let Brandon focus on what he does best – make money.   And then let Jauron work with the other two guys in building a successful team.

This might seem like I’m sitting on the fence.  Well, in a sense, I am.  We have a unique situation here.  There is some talent on this roster, and whether we like it or not, we are in better shape than we were when Donahoe got the old heave ho.  There is no need for a complete overhaul here; just a need to do some tweaking.

BG did a great job with his analysis of possible head coaches.  Personally, he sold me on the TB guy.  Would it be possible, and more important, beneficial to the organization, to bring in a guy without asking him to start up from scratch?  I think so.  Whether it be Bobby April, or Coach X, I think it is possible to bring in a “fresh face” without rocking the boat entirely.  And as of right now, I’d be okay if OBD agreed with that line of thinking.

One thing I would do is to show Turk the door.  I had reservations back in training camp when I heard about his offense.  He was going to use the same offense from the prior season, but give it more “looks,” and call plays better.  That worked out real well.  I still am befuddled as to why you would want an offense with multiple reads and pre-snap movement for a team that was/is so inexperienced at the skill positions.  KISS, KISS, KISS – that is the way to go.  Ask Joe Flacco how that method has worked out for him.

I’m okay with Fewell.  Given what he has to work with, I think he’s done a fair to decent job.  I personally think that with an actual playmaker or two, he has the tools to coach this team into a top ten defense.

Here’s one I will get ripped for, over and over again.  Wait a second; not now.  If I say it now, no one will read the rest of my post.  I’ll save it for a little…

With only three games to go, and virtually no playoff hope, it’s fair to say that we are in the dreaded regular season/pre-season mode.  Basically, some guys should be shut down, and some other guys should be given a chance to play.  Granted, this is a slippery slope to ski; you have to consider what guys have playing incentives in their contracts, whether they are LTBE or NLTBE incentives.  You screw with a guy’s contract nowadays, and you stand the chance to lose him forever.   Aside from that, this is what I would like to see over the next three weeks:

-          Does Omon have any game?  Would it really hurt much to find out?

-          Derek Fine is really, really growing on me.  As Ron from NM alluded to, he seems to be more than a capable blocker.  I haven’t seen him much on STs though, and I thought that’s where he was supposed to make his mark.  In any event, I could see this guy contributing much more next year.  Aside from Leodis, has any rookie contributed as much as he has thus far?  I’d like to see a lot more out of him over the next three weeks.

-          Steve Johnson and James Hardy.  Again – nothing to lose.  These guys need two things – an offseason in an NFL program, and game time.  Rookies typically make the biggest jump between the first year and second year.  The only problem is we’re not there yet.  Give them the next best thing – playing time.  Evans doesn’t need it.  Reed doesn’t need it.

-          How about Demetrius Bell?  Haven’t heard a peep from him since he made the cut.  I’d like to see if he made any progress during the season.  With Walker being a little banged up, this might be the perfect excuse to get this kid’s jersey a little dirty.

-          Reggie Corner.  If he can show anything, it might help the front office make a decision on Greer and/or McGee.  I’m of the belief they are only going to keep one of the two, at best.   If they sign Greer this offseason, we know McGee is a goner after next.  If they don’t sign Greer, I’d say it’s a sign they are happy with the two rookie CBs.

-          I’m so flipping p!ssed Ellis was placed on IR.  This would have been the perfect time to see what he has; he could have gotten 30-40 snaps a game over the next three weeks.  Instead, nothing, much like his whole season.  I am and have been a hater on this kid, right from the get go.  This guy needs a very successful off season to even justify a training camp invitation if you ask me.  A 3rd round pick on a 500 hundred team should contribute something.  He did nothing.  Copeland Bryan was better for crying out loud.  Copeland…friggin…Bryan.  Nice.  Real nice.

-          What did Corey Mace do last week?  I don’t remember seeing him on the field.  I know he was dressed.  I applaud Stroud’s efforts this year (along with Kyle Williams), but I’d say give those guys a break.  Let me see if Mace as anything to offer.  Line him up in three spots – the one gap, two gap, and even DE.

-          Why bother with Losman anymore?  Hamdan supposedly has been a good side kick to Edwards.  Knowing that Trent is the QB going forward, would it hurt to see Hamdan play a little, if Edwards can’t play?  If Edwards can play, I’d like to see him do it without Schonert.  Let the kid call all of the plays himself.

That addresses some of the things I’d like to see from the young guys on the roster.  Here’s what I think of some of the vets:

-          Why even dress #94 now?  As much as I’m not crazy about him, his absence really did hurt the pass rush this year.  Out of curiosity, what do you think the trade value is for him?  I’d guess a second?  Would it be smart to move him and his contract?

-          Where does Youboty fit?  I was awfully hard on the guy before he seemingly turned it around this year.  Then he got hurt.  If he is what I saw of him early this season, and even including the pre-season, and not the schmuck from the previous two years, his absence might have been underrated.

-          Boy, do Poz, Ellison, and Mitchell need a break.  Unfortunately, they aren’t getting one any time soon.  I think another underrated loss was DiGi’s.  Is that Detroit cast off Lehman worth watching?

-          Does Bryan Scott have the most to gain/lose over the next few weeks?  If the Whitner move to FS is indeed permanent, then it stands to reason we need a new SS, correct?  Or, do we?  I figure Wendling and Wilson might have something to say about this too, but then I think – no, they don’t.  This Cover 2/Tampa2 defense needs a playmaker at one of the safety spots.  I like Whitner.  It’s too bad he’s not the playmaker needed.

-          Could Kelsay and Denney be fighting for their Buffalo lives?  What do you think could be fetched for either of them?  Before you guess something really low, think how bad the depth is on many other teams.

-          Robert Royal has played his last game as a Bill, correct?

-          Is there a coincidence between the decline of Moorman and Ryan Neil’s arrival at the long snapping spot?

-          What happens to McCargo from here?  I can’t imagine they would just let him go, and I can’t imagine they’ll get much for him via a trade.  Can I hold out hope he does a Youboty?  I blame his non-contribution for the lack of pass rush this year.  The Bills counted on him.  In theory, Big John, Stroud, Williams, and the change of pace Johnson would have helped the pass rush from up the middle.  In reality, he did nothing, forcing Stroud and Williams to play too much, IMO.

The Bills have plenty of cap room, and by my count, 7 picks in the draft next year.  They probably won’t (and shouldn’t) use the cap room on expensive FAs.  What I’m disappointed about here is the number of draft picks.  I know hindsight is 20/20, but there is no way any of you can make the argument now that Crowell, Losman, or even McCargo should not have been traded when they had some value.  I’m sure I won’t hear much from the folks who argued in favor of keeping Losman and Crowell.

What would Lee Evans fetch in a trade?

And here’s one I will get killed on, for sure.  #23 is overrated.  Yes.  He’s overrated.  Great nickname – Beast Mode.  Runs with reckless abandon, and has a fire and tenacity that I wish all players in Buffalo unis would exhibit.  But…he’s not that good.  He’s slow to the hole, and doesn’t have breakaway speed.  Is he a good back – hell yes!?   But he’s not an MVP candidate, and we need to realize that.  I hear talk around here that he’s a guy to build around.  I think that’s wrong.  I think he is more along the lines of a complimentary player – a guy who needs other guys to be good so it looks like he is too.  If he were the true “franchise” back, he would’ve made this OL look better than it did at times this season.  If he were a team leader, he wouldn’t have placed a self imposed ban on interviews with the local media.  The RB spot is easy to fill.  Every year there are a number of guys who replace other guys as the “top” backs in the league.

I will be interested in how the next three games play out.  Barring a DJ firing, I actually expect the Bills to play rather well decent ok over the next few games.  I don’t think he’s lost the locker room yet, and I think he’ll have these guys ready to play like pros.  This is the reason I’d like to keep him in the organization.  If they sh!t the bed over the next three Sundays, it may make the decision to part with him easier.

And like all of you, I’m so sick and tired of the off season beginning before Christmas.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I just put up a post and thought it was dang long. Now I see this one! I put some things in my post that may persuade any other fence sitters about Jauron, haha.

Let me finish reading this post now and provide my comments….btw, I’ve rec’ed it already…

I think the better question is, do you want to trade Lee Evans?

Good post Kry. I rec’d it too.

As for Lynch, I’ll say this. I actually do like him as a player. Is he all-world? Probably not. But he is good, plays hard, gets more yardage than he ought to given his miserable OL, and has a great stiff-arm.

However, there’s one part about him I don’t agree with most Bills’ fans on. People seem to really like his personality. I think he comes off as a doofus. Does that matter much at RB? I’m not sure.

Great post, I reced it

Regarding Jauron, I don’t think I have heard anyone suggest Jauron would move to the front office. I am not sure Ralf would just add him to the big 3 we currently have. Would someone else get the axe? I doubt it. Remember Juaron was Levy’s pick, and Levy is gone.

by Joe P. on Dec 10, 2008 10:43 AM EST reply actions

Why would Jauron accept that??

If the guy enjoys coaching, which I’d imagine he does, he’s not going to simply move up to the front office because those above him think he’s not a good enough coach. He’ll take the high road and look for another coaching job elsewhere before he moves to a FO position here. I would imagine he has some pride.

about Jauron

first off great post! Do you think Jauron would be willing to accept another position other than HC? Also where would he fit in the best, in the front office or as like a DB coach?

i like these thoughts

I kind of like this train of thought. I am very opposed to the idea some have stated about blowing this team up because I think it is building and has been building in a very fine fashion. I also like that the players love their coach and so I am opposed to firing Dick but I do want to cut off Turk now.

That said, I’m not saying I’m sold yet but it is worth discussion, perhaps we should blow up the defensive end position. This is a long time coming and the only reservation I’ve ever had is that I do, unlike most here apparently, really like Schobel.

Fact is, Aaron is past his prime and is probably at the last year of any serious trade value before he becomes an “old man” by football years. Like you said kry, I think a 2nd rounder may be a possibility for him, especially because he was out this year without a tear, and is one year removed from a string of, in order, seasons with 6.5, 8.5, 11.5, 8.0, 12.0, 14.0 and 6.5 sack years. I mean, honestly, that is very very good. Kelsay could probably real in a 3rd or 4th because of his value as a seasoned starter though probably a 4th because of his massive contract, and Denney, well whatever with him maybe keep him as depth or let him go or whatever.

If we could bring a 2nd and 4th in the coming draft and send off Kelsay and Schobel’s contracts (which are how many years left now, anybody know?) we then have the opportunity to trade back into the first round AND bring in a great free agent.

What does this potentially mean? A stud DE with our first 1st rounder and Alex Mack with our second 1st rounder and a free agent DE with our new found cap space.

Don’t know how realistic this can be, and I don’t know if I want to get rid of Schobel, but I think it could be worth talking about?

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

by poz on Dec 10, 2008 6:06 PM EST reply actions

Poz - your 4th paragraph is what I like, to an extent.

You’ll hear this from me at least a hundred times between now and the draft – try to stockpile draft picks in the 2nd to 4th round, and stay out of the top half of the first round.

What did Washington give up for Taylor?

by krytime on Dec 10, 2008 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

ouch

I looked it up. Looks like the phins got a 2nd in 09 an a 6th in 2010. That doesn’t bode well for what we could get for Schobel. The only difference I could see is that everyone knew Jason Taylor was threatening to retire if he didn’t get traded which brought his value down.

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

by poz on Dec 10, 2008 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

There’s no way this team tries to stockpile draft picks. The opportunity to do that was the past couple years. It would be the right thing to do this year, but won’t happen. This team goes into rebuilding mode by only half-assing it, which is partially why we’re always “starting over” every few years….

Lee our best player on offense??? Lynch overrated???

Too much. Are you Kidding me? I would trade Lee and a second round pick for Boldin in 2.5 seconds. No questions asked. Lee doesn’t get good leverage on other cornerbacks, he often gets double covered and as a result gets lost and is never open. When was the last time you saw Trent throw a 5 yard slant to Evans? Never. Why you ask?? Evans can’t get position because he is too small and he might lose his head because today’s linebackers are huge. Lee is a good receiver but he isn’t a number 1 and he sure doesn’t play like it either. Unfortunately the Bills pay him like he is > trade him for Boldin > great value!

Lynch is NOT overrated. If I was EVER told that by anyone I would laugh in their face. If you have ever played football you know that an offensive line is often centered around the CENTER. HA HA. Seriously. The center makes all the line calls and he is the LEADER of the offensive line. Kent Hull retired like what 12 or 13 years ago??? Since then the O-line has never EVER had a leader at center. When your offensive line doesn’t have a leader, there isn’t much passion being envoked into the players there and it isn’t easy to run behind that. LYNCH is the BEST PLAYER ON THE BILLS BY FAR. He has great talents and a great attitude when out on the field.

EVERY WEEKEND I WISH THE REST OF THE BILLS WOULD PLAY LIKE LYNCH

I stand by my comments about Lynch.

He has a ton of talent, and a great game day presence. #23 didn’t run well this year; he even knows it, and finally has said as much.

He’s not a true franchise RB. Those guys are hard to find. Lynch is good, but he is overrated to an extent.

Free Agents/ Trade = A MUST

If the Bills dont go out and get a veteran FA or trade for a veteran TE, C or WR, the offense will be no better next year. Simply put, we BETTER draft a DE or OLB to rush the passer and we need to make a FA move or a trade to try and bolster our offense. It is much easier for a rookie defensive player to make a bigger impact than an offensive player.

I really do not like Robert Royal and I hope that the Bills axe him ASAP. Same goes for Melvin Fowler as well. KICK THE TRASH TO THE CURB!!!

Keep Youboty as he shows good potential.

free agency...

i think this off-season the Bills need to generally focus on the offense in free agency and the defense in the draft (i.e. DE, OLB, S). Offensive positions, especially the ones we need (TE, C, WR) take time to develop. The Bills need immediate impact players here if they want their offense to improve next year. Whether any worth while players are available at these positions will be the question.

A lot depends on what we do with the coaching staff. If a new staff comes in, the change in philosophy will dictate what we need.

A change in philosophy could change

the need at some positions, but not at Center. It is true that Centers can take time to develop, but Mangold played as a rookie. I think Mack can too. Anyway, we appear to be at least 1 year away from the playoffs and 2 yrs from a run at the SB, best case. We have time.

by Joe P. on Dec 11, 2008 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

There are

a couple veteran Centers that are potential free agents (Matt Birk, Jeff Saturday). It would be great to pick up a veteran for a couple years for cheaper than a high draft pick.

We do need a pass rush but I think our offense has hurt us more during the season. There are the obvious TE pickups. Jermaine Gresham would be an amazing player to have. Lots of yards and touchdowns, hopefully.

I’m assuming coaching staff wont change.

Any suggestions of defensive players we could pick up?

by Buffalove83 on Dec 16, 2008 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t want Saturday….

I think he’s a good player, but made to look better than he is because of Manning. He also seems to be a bit injury prone these days. I don’t think he’s a fit for what we need….a guy who can handle the 3-4….Plus, he’ll return to Indy anyhow.

Birk on the other hand could be a really nice pickup, especially if we plan to go DE early….

good post...

a lot of good stuff in there krytime. I agree with a log of what you said. Here’s a few things that stuck out:

1. Dick Jauron. I don’t think it’s any secret that I do not like him as a head coach. I never have and I never will. I hope to God he gets fired. That said, he does garner the respect of the payers. I also don’t think he would be a bad front office guy. Although, I don’t see how that would work with Buffalo’s current structure and I don’t know if Dick would want to take such a position.

2. Schobel/Kelsey: Bottom line is that Buffalo vastly overpaid for both players. Schobel is still a value when healthy, Kelsey has never been of value. I hope they suck up the guarantee money and just cut their losses. Maybe they can try some dumb team to trade for him, but I doubt it. I’m looking DE in round 1 of the draft this year.

3. Linebackers: I think this is one of the hardest groups to analyze. Mitchell has been so up and down, but as frusturating as that has been, at least he has made big time plays. Poz has been consistently consistent (yeah, you read that right), but the big play has been non-existant. I’m a PSU guy and a HUGE Poz guy. I’ve watched him make dozens of big plays in his college career. I don’t know if the lack of game-changing plays is a result of talent or the defensive system. In the Fewell version of the cover-2, the MLB is asked to drop off into coverage a lot, protecting the deep middle of the field. Very rarely does Poz get to bltiz or prowl the line-of-scrimmiage without having to worry about a large chunk of the pass zone as well. I would love to see him play in a non-cover 2 defense, whether it be the 4-3 or 3-4 that he played in college. Becuase of that, I just don’t know what to think about him. As for Ellison, he has to go. He’s just too much of a liability in the run game and offers no help in the pass game. I hope they can find a SLB to replace him this off-season, whether it’s in free agency or the draft.

Wow, I can't believe I waited this long to read this thread.

I havn’t read comments yet, so I don’t know what has already been said in response. I hope it isn’t too late to jump into the conversation. Anyways, here is my standard super long response:

Does Omon have any game? Would it really hurt much to find out?

I doubt it would hurt, but would it help? He is entrenched as our number three and we certainly won’t keep 4 runningbacks next season. The team has all of training camp and the preseason to find out what they have in Omon. And don’t forget that he has been practicing with the team for 8+ months now. Just because we don’t know what the Bills have in Omon doesn’t mean that they don’t.

Similiar response about Bell playing. What is the need for throwing a 7th round offensive tackle who isn’t even the primary backup and probably shouldn’t be next year either into a game? Kurupt mentions that it wouldn’t hurt to throw him in for a couple series, but what kind of feel are you going to get from him from watching 10-15 plays? We should just wait until preseason next year to worry about these kinds of playes.

Reggie Corner has been seeing some playing time in nickel and dime situations because of injuries. Even if Greer is let go, Corner still comes back as the 4th corner, so there is no need for him to play anymore than he is now.

What did Corey Mace do last week?

Who cares, he should be considered a long shot to make the roster next year and if he does it will be as a 5th DT type of depth player who will spend most of the year inactive anyways.

Steve Johnson and Derek Fine will probably be counted on to contribute a lot next year, so they definitely need the PT.

Why bother with Losman anymore?

It’s a week late, but apparently the team agrees with you.

what do you think the trade value is for him?

I don’t think you can get a second round pick for somebody in their thirties unless they are Jason Taylor. All those DTs only got a third and fifth in return, why would we assume that Schobel can get that? I woudn’t move him now anyways. His salary is still reasonable for next year, so lets see how he plays next season and decide on his future later.

Where does Youboty fit?

If Greer doesn’t come back, I would like to see him start instead of McKelvin. I think Leodis’ 2 pick game against KC is getting overblown. I thought he got picked on a little against Miami and San Fran and didn’t play great against the Jets either. He is only 1 year older than McKelvin too. Either way its going to come down to a training camp battle.

Is that Detroit cast off Lehman worth watching?

No.

Does Bryan Scott have the most to gain/lose over the next few weeks?

No again, he is firmly entrenched as the team’s starting strong safety.

Could Kelsay and Denney be fighting for their Buffalo lives?

They have to be. One of those two or Ellis probably isn’t going to make this team next year and my money is on Ellis being safe. They have no trade value. Last year, Dallas traded Jason Ferguson just to move up 25 spots in the 7th round. You couldn’t get more than a 6th rounder and that even seems optimistic. If you could get trade value for those kinds of players, wouldn’t their be more than 10 trades involving players every year?

Robert Royal has played his last game as a Bill, correct?

I don’t think so. Why does everyone think he is better than Schouman again. It’s like when prospects from big time schools get criticized while the little shcool guys get hyped. People are too critical of guys like Royal, who isn’t good, but isn’t terrible. he is a rosterable guy and would make a for a solid backup to Fine next year (a better backup than can’t block Schouman), while a mid round rookie figures the NFL out.

Is there a coincidence between the decline of Moorman and Ryan Neil’s arrival at the long snapping spot?

No. He’s a long snapper. Statistically, this has been one of Moorman’s best seasons ever. I think people overreacted to a couple of great seasons from Moorman. He is an above average punter or better.

What happens to McCargo from here?

He comes back to camp next year and tries to earn that 4th DT spot. If he shows up healthy and in shape then he could be a factor next season. if he shows up fat, then he probably gets cut.

7 picks in the draft next year

Isn’t 7 picks pretty standard before comp selections?

What would Lee Evans fetch in a trade?

A lot, but not enough to make it worth trading him. Logistically it is really tough to trade a player immediately after he signs such a big contract too. The cap hit would be pretty steep.

but there is no way any of you can make the argument now that Crowell, Losman, or even McCargo should not have been traded when they had some value.

We’ve been over the Crowell thing before. At what did was he not the starter for a team that thought it could make a run at a wildcard spot AND had had trade value? He could’ve been traded before the season, but he was the starter. He couldn’t have been traded after he decided to have surgery because nobody would have wanted him.

The Bills DID trade McCargo. You can’t blame the team for McCargo’s bad back.

In hindsight, you can say that we should have traded Losman, but only because he stunk so much this year. If he had played anywhere near as good as he did in 06 when Trent went down this year, the Bills might still be in the playoff hunt and that would be far more valuable than the 5th round pick or whatever we could have gotten for him.

And here’s one I will get killed on, for sure. #23 is overrated.

Then we will have to agree to disagree. I think he is a Marian Barber clone running behind a bad line. You can’t hit the holes when there aren’t any.
