We Love Dick Jauron... for 3 more years
ESPN is reporting that Dick Jauron signed his 3 year extension YESTERDAY.
1-7 over the last 8 games is exactly when I would sign my coach to an extension.
We as fans love when our coaches get extended during one of the worst stretches in franchise history.
I for one am really excited.
I mean - who wanted "The Chin" anyways? I personally like drafting in the Top 10 every year.

How do you
announce this now? What a weird and silly deal for the Bills. I thought Russ Brandon was good at marketing and PR? I guess I was wrong. Well, now that we are stuck with him, what to do? Do Turk and Perry stay? Will there be any changes in the front office?
I guess those rumors last week were just that rumors. The players love Jauron. He has done a pretty solid job of drafting and signing some free agents. The key to the Bills under Jauron has been and will be in 2009 simply QB play. Can Trent Edwards and whomever is the QB do enough to provide a competent offense? I have my doubts under Schonert and Jauron.

Regardless it is a really stupid time to let the cat of the bag
Bright idea guys, “My coach just choked away a very important game, the team has been impotent for over a month now, lets make sure to let ESPN know that the earlier reports by better outlets was correct.” Nice move asshats. Anyhow, now that is out of the way, the question must be begged, does Turk stay or go? I think Turk is gone this season, especially if some offensively minded HCs lose their jobs this year, we might be able to get someone decent.

This is even better than when the ticket department sent out an email for next year’s season tickets the day after the Toronto game.

yeah
but obviously those sources “leaked” it now. I think rather than have all this speculation about the future of Jauron, Ralph needed to take the heat off of him.
And now today at Jauron’s presser, the question will be “did you sign your 3 year extension?” and Jauron will say, “we don’t talk about contracts around here.” Yippee

Probably not. The source who confirmed this could have been anybody. I can almost tell you with 100% certainy that the source was not Russ Brandon or Ralph Wilson or anybody high enough on the totem poll that we have even ever heard of them. The source could have been Dick Jauron or somebody Jauron knows. I almost think it is more likely that somebody close to Jauron was trying to get his name off of the hot seat than it is someone in the organization let something slip.

the Bills aren’t that smart to produce propaganda.
That is exactly my point. I doubt Brandon and co. were even aware that someone within the organization had confirmed the Jauron extension. I don’t think Wilson and Brandon would have liked this story to be public. If all that is true, then you can throw any and all conspiracy theories out the window. The most likely scenario here is that Jauron signed the extension a couple months ago and the story finally got leaked yesterday. Depsite the headline of this fanpost, nowhere in the ESPN article does it say when the deal was signed and we were hearing rumors that the deal had been finalized for awhile now.
by kaisertown on Dec 15, 2008 6:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's because it was edited and ESPN makes no mention of this.
The original article stated:
Despite going on a 1-7 slide that left the Buffalo Bills out of the playoffs, coach Dick Jauron signed an extension on Sunday, sources told ESPN.
by twoeightnine on Dec 15, 2008 6:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t really know what to think about this situation anymore. Why this team continues to be so secretive about a contract extension for their head coach is beyond me. If they didn’t want the continued scrutiny from the media they would come out and say that Jauron has been officially extended. Instead they keep this distraction going for several weeks, which could have effected the team during this horrible stretch.
It clearly (jauron term) has become obvious (another jauron favorite) that our front office and head coach has become the laughing stock of the nfl and truly unfit to run an NFL organization.

The Old Man...
…hails from Detroit. Maybe he is trying to mimmick what they have in that town. I can really see a 0-16 type season in our near future too. Its starting to feel that way now, only much worse because we thought this team had something after the Seattle and San Diego games. They were truly talented teams last year and it felt good to beat them the way we did. The only other game that felt that good was KC. The other wins were squeekers and the losses have been just pitiful. Maybe when JP goes to Detroit or KC, he will be right at home with the garbage product that’s put on the field.

By not waiting until the end of the season
and signing Jauron earlier, whether it was two months ago or yesterday, they blew it, have eggs on their face and have no one to blame but themselves. I’m talking about the front office.
At least point, I almost feel sorry for Jauron. He’s caught up in the middle of this contract mess. Well, he may get the last laugh and get millions of dollars for sitting home.
This franchise, indeed, is becoming a joke, but it’s not funny to us (Bills fans.)

I know
I’m vastly outnumbered here. But I think it is a very good move. Three years is not enough time to change things around especially when you have to unload and change things from a previous administration. On big problem was the Losman thing. DJ was in a no win situation, he had to let JP fail or succeed. Jim Johnson had a similar situation in Miami with an aging Dan Marino. I think giving Jauron 3 years with his QB and team is reasonable.
Regardless of how we feel about the season, I think we are all fairly confident that we have a good core to build on. What we need are to fill some starter holes, Center, one safety spot and a LB spot (Ellison) and we would be good with our starters and then we need depth and that takes time and we are getting there. Kudos to Wilson for not panicking.
I was watching Pittsburgh and they look worse on offense than the Bills. It is their defense keeping them viable and that took time to build. Also being in the DC metro area I’m watching the same thing happen with the Redskins. They were 6-2 and have imploded, losing yesterday to the Bengals. Their situation is horrible, they have no core to build on and no sense of were the organization is going after 10 years of crazy spending. It made me appreciate that even though the Bills have collapsed, we have a sense of a good core, direction, youth, etc. Although, interestingly enough, both teams had a catastrophic event with a young talented player, ours was Everett and they lost Sean Taylor.
Our 5-1 record showed our promise, our current record shows our youth and lack of depth. Our holes can easily be filled and our depth built on.DJ may have lost the fans, but I’m glad he hasn’t lost the players or the owner.
I apologize for the sunshine optimism. I know it is totally uncalled for but what are you going to do?

On paper and theoretically, what you say may be correct. However, when you see such poor in game coaching and no ability to lead your team to wins, the writing is on the wall. If we were continuously improving and playing tough football, I may even agree with you. But when you have 2 wins in three season against winning opponents and can’t win the most important games of the season every year, I don’t care how long you’ve been given. Jauron has proven he in not capable enough to be a winning coach and this team needs new direction….Unfortunately it’s not coming any time soon…

Three years not enough time?
Funny, try convincing those in Atlanta and Miami that three years isn’t enough time. Miami, from 1-15 to 9-5. Atlanta is 9-5 with a rookie QB. Both with new head coaches. I do appreciate the attempt at optimism because I have been the eternal optimist with this team for a decade. I cannot do it anymore. Going from 5-1 to 6-10 and no playoffs has been humiliating. I will not renew my season ticket next season. I will no longer drive 302 miles each way to see this product. After thew opener vs. Seattle, I actually believed things had changed. I witnessed agressive play-calling on offense, defense and special teams. We were, shall I say, exciting. I guess we used an entire season’s worth of aggressive and smart play-calling in one week.
And while I’m on the subject, the fake punt call in the 1st quarter was stupid. If the Jets could tackle yesterday, that play is a failure. Calling for a fake was not stupid, but having Ellison be a running back is stupid. Because it happened to work doesn’t make it smart.

This stinks....
My hopes for next season and the future are as dim as ever. We cannot win with this man as the head coach and now we’re stuck with him going forward. Why did the front office and old Ralphie feel the need to give Jauron a contract after starting the season hot against a bunch of cream puffs? They couldn’t let the season play out in its predictable fashion?
This makes me sick. Jauron’s a good man but he shouldn’t be getting the nine lives afforded to the cat species. His time is up, but only this organization would be dumb enough to continue with the ineptitude and mediocrity. Without any luck, this team will never win anything because of the way its run and because of who is in charge of key areas. Simply inexcusable for this steaming pile to continue.
Good luck selling out those home games next year FO. There are going to be revolts and people with pitchforks and a man on fire and I killed a man with a trident. Woops. Ralph probably doesn’t want to eat the contract, but he’s going to lose just as much, maybe more, in lost ticket sales, lost gameday revenues and overall ill will towards the organization…..

It may be a three-year deal on the surface, K, but if the Bills aren’t at least 9-7 next season, Jauron’s probably gone
It’s sad that we’d have to endure another season. I wanted JauWrong fired two weeks ago. I could even give the man another chance if I felt that he’d learned from his mistakes. But this is the same Dick from Chicago and he’ll never change. He is just too stubborn to turn things around. Perhaps we’ll fill some needs next year and the team will be better on paper; however any personnel gains will be nullified by a tougher schedule. You can’t play the NFC and AFC West every year.
If the extension is true…and if Jawrong is not fired at the conclusion of the season (or sooner), then look for another pitiful season next year. By that time, JauWrong won’t have the Wilson’s “lack of talent immunity totem” to play anymore.

Well, I don't think DJ is a complete failure of a coach
He would be my choice if I had a very veteran team that had just gotten rid of a slave driver coach and needed a more free spirited guy to bring out their best. People make fun of the Philips move in CowTown TX there, but after Parcells it was the right hire. DJ and Wade are alike in that they are very good player’s coaches in that guys like to play for them. But when dealing with heavy roster turnover and a youth movement like we are, we need someone like Parcells or old school Tom Coughlin to run the ship, not a DJ. Wrong guy for the wrong type of team.

I still think
we need to hear from Ralph at the end of the season that Jauron is his coach before we take this as complete 100% truth. Cuz there is a slight chance he could still can him even though he signed the extension. Although we would all probably agree that chance is very slim. I wish I could tell that Ralph really wants to win, and I believe he does, but sometimes you just really wonder. I mean why does he think he should go down to his last breathe with Jauron? I don’t really get it. I am a really big Jauron guy, but if he comes back and keeps Schonert. I don’t know if I can take that. Once again, being a Bills fan, the most interesting part of the season is the off-season. I mean our Super Bowl is the draft. Other than that this franchise has shown nothing but inept decision making that keeps us floundering in futility in the AFC East

There was a 2006 or 2007 Miami Game
It may be easier to make a list of games not lost by game management. The VP in San Diego made a good point when he cut Schottenheimer last year, where he said coaching all comes down to the decisions you make in just a couple minutes of the game in the 4th quarter.

I'd count the second Miami game on this list.
The play call for the pass to Evans was atrocious. Remember, we had 1st and goal from the three, and we call a fade route. A TD there and we are in position to win the game.

The play call wasn't the problem.
It was the execution. I’ll take Lee in single coverage in the corner any day. It worked in the past, Lee scored against the Chargers on that very play. It was just an absolute horrible pass.

Sort of...
Even if it didn’t work you’d have figured that JP would have floated out of the end-zone or bounced it, which he usually does. If it was McIntyre instead of Evans then the stupidity of the call would be more clear-cut…like in yesterday’s game. When will Schonert learn that touch-pass and JP are mutually exclusive. Bad call per se? No. With JP as quarterback? Probably.

by Zumone on Dec 15, 2008 11:54 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
hmmmmm – i’ll try and speculate.
Lets just say that Brandon is really really good at his job. He says the Bills are unacceptable and he knows that Ralph isn’t going to do anything about it. But he likes the Bills and wants to win in order to make him look competent.
So Brandon leaks the extension right at the worst possible time in order for the front office and Ralph to try and come up with something because they are being put in a predicament. Ralph is being put on the spot right now and must do something in order to sell tickets. The fans are obviously not happy – he knows that so something drastic must happen in order to sell tickets and merchandise next year. Hence Fire DJ. then hire Bill Cowher – trade for Tom Brady and bring Bruce Smith out of retirement. the mans a miracle worker!

I don’t think we can take news of a contract extension seriously right now. Does anyone honestly believe that if we close 0-2 Wilson won’t just man up, take the hit and dump him? I actually think if we can’t get a Cowher I want Jauron for one more year, as long as Schonert is gone.
That said, I find it very very hard to justify keeping a coach who finished a season 1-9, even with a contract extension signed. Ralph Wilson isn’t that detached from reality where he can’t recognize that a collapse this severe and complete warrants losing your job. I say we finish 0-2 Jauron is gone

I don’t believe Wilson will. Now that the extension has definitely been confirmed, or close to it, I can’t see the old man making the move. He’s as stubborn as they get and I can’t imagine he would turn around and admit his mistake that quickly. On the other hand, he’s got to be sick with the product on the field weekly and the coaching blunders that continue to occur. Who knows really? Any reasonable person would assume if a coach finishes 1-9 in his 3rd season with the team and having not had a winning season that there’d be no chance of him returning. But alas, this is the Bills we’re talking about, one of the most dysfunctional franchises in sports…..

At one point in the game, the cameras showed Jauron, and it sure looked like he had just eaten a handful of Super Sour Warheads.

In the end, it's too bad.
I truly wanted Jauron to be the coach to finally succeed here. I wish things unfolded differently, but it looks dire for everyone involved – no matter what the outcome may be.

10 predictions IF JauWrong doesn't get canned...
- He doesn’t fire Shonert, because the Turk is a first-year first-time coordinator. He successfully argues that, with a full year of experience and better talent he should get another chance.
- The Bills finally draft a pass rushing DE to complement Schobel, but he doesn’t make an impact until the final 6 games of the season.
- Buffalo decides to keep Preston and Fowler because JauWrong “really likes the guys we have on the roster”. This causes some fans to spontaneously combust.
- The Bills finish 5-11 against tougher competition in 2009, but win their last two games saving Jauron’s job for yet another year.
- A Russian spy satellite captures a 10 nanosecond clip of the Bills head coach actually getting angry. A copy of the video is auctioned off on eBay for $12,000.
- The Miami home game is played again in Toronto because the Dolphins apparently have quite a fan base in the Canadian metropolis.
- Speaking of Toronto, despite JP Loserman lands a job as back-up QB for the Argo’s.
- Jame Hardy, on the slow train to bustville, never makes it past Steve Johnson on the depth chart.
- The Bills are finally back to 7-9 in 2010 and begin 4-0 in 2011. JauWong reportedly signs another 3 year extension and the cycle repeats itself with the Bills losing the next 10 out of 12 games.
- Anthropologists from around the globe converge on Buffalo, apparently puzzled as to why the fans continue to support the team. It is determined that removing the Bills from Buffalo is about as dangerous as extracting a bullet from a gun-shot victims spine. So the team is left and the
patientsfans are left in a state of perpetual agony.
I could throw in a prediction about owner, but that wouldn’t be nice.

No way Losman ends up in an Argos uniform.
They all saw him play 2 weeks ago. That ship has sailed.

That would normally be true…but look at the Maple Leafs. They would love him up there…he’s provide an endless source of complaints.

Another thing that makes no sense to me is the issue of this team’s value after Ralph dies. What is he thinking? Does he wish to devalue the franchise and make it a bit easier for locals to buy it (hardly)? Or does he wish to maximize the team value for his heirs? If he wishes to maximize the team’s value for his heirs he sure is going about it in the wrong way. If I were Ralph I would want my family to get maximum value for this franchise. My final gift to the family. Perhaps his family just doesn’t need the money. In any event, his actions do not make much sense to me. Wierd.

this is from blogs.buffalobills.com
aparently from today:
Q: What assurances have you gotten that you’ll be back next season?
DJ: Well we haven’t really talked about it so in that regard I suppose not and there has also been no indication I won’t be.
Q: There’s a report that you have signed a contract. Have you signed a contract?
DJ: Well you know the answer to that. We don’t talk about contracts and I certainly don’t talk about them.
Q: What’s your rationale behind not talking about it?
DJ: I’m clearly not the one and it would be irresponsible for me to respond to that.
Q: Do you think you’ll be here in the next two weeks, a month, next season?
DJ: I would anticipate that I would be yes.
Q: Are you saying you might have signed a contract?
DJ: I’m not saying anything.
Q: You’re not going to address it either way?
DJ: Right.
Q: You’re not denying it?
DJ: I’m not saying anything about it.
Q: Do you anticipate that you will be here next season?
DJ: I do. I do at this point.
Q: Who’s rule is it that you don’t talk about the contract?
DJ: It’s from inside the organization.
Q: It’s an organizational rule?
DJ: Right.
the bold one is what bothers me. its YOUR contract dumbass. if anyone can talk about it its YOU – for the love of all thats holy

Your thought is wrong, J2. Jauron is an employee of the organization; whether it’s his contract or not, there’s a club rule that permits details from being released.
Love DJ. So cool in the face of the media. Particularly liked the “I’m not saying anything” response. That’s awesome.

Reading that interview you printed
makes me – if I was Jauron – ask “what DON’T you understand about my statement that I can’t comment on my contract?”
These annoying reporters just hate it when they can’t get what they want, which is why Belechick, Parcells and others get special delight out of tormenting them!
Thanks for printing the interview!

ralph aint eatin 3 years
get used to it. Dick’s our guy for at least 2 more years. I like him, players like him,he’s a good coach BUT his uptight nature has this team in knots. Biggest problem, Edwards has lost his confidence and maybe getting a bit yippy like his coach (remember chuck knoblauch). Without Trent at his early season level, we are screwed. I wonder if Dick being wound so tight effects his goofy play calling…lob to evans last week on 1st and goal at the 4 and then yesterday??Lots of other issues, but this is a QB league and without an above average QB, you got no chance. Thought we had one, now not at all sure.
by sestak on Dec 15, 2008 5:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
the biggest mystery of the Bills season
is still QB Trent Edwards, who played like two different people: pre-concussion; post-concussion. I don’t think we’ll know the answer (whether he’s good or not) until next year……but I agree with you: he’s the key.
I still have a lot of faith in him, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

lob to evans last week on 1st and goal at the 4
I know that this has been mentioned around this blog a bunch of times already, but that play call was for a run. JP audibled out of it at the line with a sight adjustment when he saw Evans had single coverage.

Where there is smoke there’s fire. What’s with the phantum groin injury? Last night’s news had Vic Caruci saying that something is going on in the locker room. He sounded like he wasn’t positive he was hurt all that bad.

Jauron's extension
whether or not he got one (and I believe that he did), it probably won’t be announced by the team until the end of the season, so until then, everything is speculation. For me, I’m going into off-season mode, which means its time to start researching which players I want the Bills to go after in free agency and the draft (that they inevitibly won’t).

It's tough being a Bills fan
First you have the Organization against you. They choose to give away winter home field advantage to your warm weather arch rival team. Whats with that. I guess they were counting on the 40 year old rivalry to fill the 72 degree Dome at $250 a pop. Next we have an advertising guy selecting the players on our team. I bet we will have the best roster for GQ models in the league. Not to mention that the top guy in finding our GQ allstars doesn’t want to live in WNY. I could go on, but I’m too affraid the Bills will get mad and move away.
by gjv on Dec 15, 2008 7:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
The winter home field advantage is a myth and has been for years.
The Bills are exposed to the elements as much as the Dolphins are. I’m not sure how you can be a cold weather team when you practice in the element controlled Field House day in and day out.

Thank you for that extension!!
Great news for Dolphin nation. A couple of extra win per season.
Ps Seriously, what the hell the GM is thinking?

Alright.. Here's My F@$#^%*&!$ing, 2 cents...
Which BTW, may make very little sense to y’all…
As possibly the oldest Bills fan on this site, even older than Brian’s dad; I have to remind all of you, Ralph is anything but dumb… A shrewd businessman, he actually earned his fortune through his insurance, manufacturing, and even radio investments… Quite diverse investments in fact.. But his passion, has been the Bills, and I guess you may even call them a sort of “hobby”, but believe me, he has the Bills best interest at heart, for the simple reason, that he wants that Super Bowl ring, before he moves on….
Question his decisions if you want.. Heck, we all have for years… But don’t even question his devotion to the Bills, or his desire to finally win a Super Bowl for our team… Question those decisions, but don’t question his business smarts… Heck, just google Ralph Wilson Industries…
Now finally… As for an extension possibility for DJ… Yes, it could be true, but then it may not… But, I would like to believe, that a man so business smart, would have also written in a stipulation, regarding the rest of this season (actually, Brandon’s job, also business smart)…
Barring that however, I truly believe, Mr. Wilson, will do what he thinks is best for the Bills, regardless of any financial consequences… He still wants that ring folks… And I for one, pray he’s around long enough to finally get it….
