Nothin’ like moving on ASAP. If Denver fans can do it, we can do it.
Guru, we made a mistake in 2006. If we all admit it, will you just throw us a bone and swap Jay Cutler for Donte Whitner straight up?

No Way! :) Seriously, hadn’t the Bills just drafted Losman? Sometimes guys come along at just the wrong time. For all of Mike Shanahan’s failures in the draft from 2000-2005, he has gotten it right, for the most part, in 06, 07 and 08.

Psshhh, no, they hadn’t just drafted Losman – J.P. was SO two years ago at that point.
And yeah, I’d say that Shanny got his top two draft picks right this year. Clady and Royal have been the two best rookies in the league not named Matt Ryan, IMO.

LOL...
Two years already?? I knew it was “recent”….
Seriously, there is alot of youth on the roster and like I said before they are trying to figure it out. When the core of the offense is entirely made up of players in their 3rd year or younger(Cutler, Marshall, Royal, Scheffler, Clady, Harris, Kuper,) the future has to look bright.
Now, if we could only have some success in the draft with defensive players.

Your last thought brings me to my second question: where have the likes of Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder, et al gone? I suppose I could find such information out there on the interwebs, but it’s easier to ask. :)

D-Line MIA
Moss has been doing a fair job and been on the field consistently. Crowder has been inactive the majority of the season. (I may have them backwards…Guru will correct me if so)
I believe the word we’ve been hearing is “they are both progressing fairly well”. Which I translate to: Neither of them is a star lineman and aren’t knocking our socks off (or anyone else’s).
I think the coaches are still trying to groom them, but we are awfully near “bust” status for those guys.
by sadaraine on Dec 15, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Crowder isn't real.
He’s imaginary. He’s been inactive all season long. Like sadaraine said, Moss has been in consistently and played well.

Just so you know. We are a very disgruntled, angry bunch of fans right now. Our team sucks. They suck on the road, at home, in cold or hot conditions. The only good news is that your defense is a sieve against the run. If Lynch gets 30 carries we might keep it close enough only to give you the game at the end.
I wouldn’t worry about playing us. We are an embarrassment right now.

We aren’t feeling much better about ourselves right now. This season has been such an up and down, topsy-turvey journey I won’t believe we have won anything until we have.
One week we beat Atlanta in Atlanta, or New York in the Meadowlands, then we come back and lose to the Raiders by 21.
As for disgruntled, Broncos fans aren’t much happier. The Chiefs collapse, coupled by the pounding we took yesterday, and this game has an eery must-win feel to it….

SHUT IT!
You are staring directly at a playoff spot. You have to be feeling pretty good, even if your D is terrible. I would be absolutely thrilled to trade places w/the Broncos.
But yeah, I can see your frustration. Losing to Oakland, KC and Jacksonville is pretty bad, especially two of those being at home. Playing down to the competition is the sign of a young team, IMO. At least you have talent at some important positions (QB, WR, TE, OL) that the Bills wish they had, plus you’ll be going to the playoffs in all likelihood.

Good point
I think as a fan when you are in the middle of a roller-coaster season, the grass is greener on the other side…
That being said you have a great point…we are fighting for a playoff spot and that is a heck of a lot better than last year (7-9 finish). We already have more wins than last year and our future is very bright.
I realistically think the Bills just need a QB…you have a lot of talented youth in skill positions. A good QB is worth his weight in gold to a franchise. We are so happy to have Cutler!!!

Defense?
I have to admit that I have not watched the Broncos much this year, but your defensive stats are not pretty and the one game I did watch (Monday night v. the Pats)….you guys could not stop anything – run or pass. What is the problem? Is it personnel? Is it the scheme? Has the team resigned itself to the fact that they need to score 30 points to win? Are they in trouble if the offense does not light it up every game?
by roscoe11 on Dec 15, 2008 2:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Defensive woes
The core of the problem is the front 7. We typically do do complex blitz packages. So 4 linemen rush and basically they are all mediocre with the exception of Dumerville. So no pass-rush or run stopping = swiss cheese defense. That is what it boils down to. You can pass on us cause you have all day. You can run on us cause the line isn’t good enough to stuff you consistently.
There has been a LOT of talk at MHR this year about our defense. Needless to say we are really looking forward to some defensive answers in the off-season. I think the big opinion is dominant DT and smart Safety would do us wonders.
That being said, the defense has been doing a very respectable job over the last 6 or so games. Yes there are clunkers in there against Oakland and Carolina, but if you watch the game, you would see the defense playing well overall. They look MUCH better now than they did the first 4 games of the season (where yes, we would NEED to score more than 30 to win)
by sadaraine on Dec 15, 2008 6:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
ANSWER
In a word, yes…
It isn’t so much how many points than it is the type of possessions the Broncos offense is able to put together. If they are portecting the ball, controlling the clock, the scoring will come. And it has.
When the offense gets sloppy with the ball, starts turning the football over, that is when the trouble starts. Case in point. If the Broncos turn the ball over more than two times the Broncos lose. It is all about protecting the football…

I'll add
that our safeties have been a problem all year. We started with veteran retreads in Marlon McCree (SD) and Marquand Manuel (too many teams to list), and when McCree hurt his ankle, we started tryouts for every safety and his mother. Two practice squad players and three street free agents later we finally found some playing time for Josh Barrett, our 7th rounder this year out of Arizona State.
He is definitely a specimen, possessing the physical traits you are looking for in a SS, and even Shanny admits that they should have tried him sooner, because we have looked vastly better since he has come in two weeks ago. But Manuel is still a weak spot,a nd the fact that we play our safety up in the box 90% of the time means that we are still asking for too much from our undermanned safety positions. Every week the stats for us in the run defense are the same: we hold teams to a 3 yard or less average EXCEPT for that one 56 yarder that went for a long score. Teams have been KILLING us with the big play, int he runa nd pass, and that has been the fault of the safeties. Good running teams like Carolina and Atlanta should be expected to get past the LBs from time to time, but that is why you have safeties, so that the big plays are limited. We haven’t been able to consistently do that.
Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

I thought I had anwered this but must have closed it…
Anyway, Obviously Lynch makes me nervous. On defense, your DBs are very opportunistic. Jay Cutler trusts his arm a lot, sometimes too much. There will likely be opportunities for the Bills to make some plays on the ball.
The real X-Factor for the Bills is the Special Teams. Roscoe Parrish, Terrance McGee. Both scare the hell out of me. We saw enough of those guys Week 1 last season.
Devin Hester and Josh Cribbs get all the pub, but the Bills have a top notch return game year in and year out.

Terrence McGee is no longer our KR. Leodis McKelvin currently leads the AFC in kick returns, and had another 100 yarder taken away from him yesterday. If Shanahan decides to kick it to him for some odd reason, he will burn you…

That is true….
McGee got hurt earlier in the year, so they made the move to McKelvin, who has really impressed the past month or two. He is the NCAA all time return TD leader, so it’s not like he’s some diamond in the rough. The change was going to happen this year, it just came a little earlier than we had expected….

Bills threat
Defensively: I’m not nervous about the Bills defense…when we have the ball it is always us that beats us. Jay has a habit of trying to force too many passes. If you watch our losses you will notice him doing that and costing us very pricey turnovers that kill our momentum.
Offensively: Marshawn Lynch. Our run defense is poor enough that if we miss assignments he will go all the way (see Carolina’s big run last week or pick any big runs from this season…it has happened often this year).

Marshall
He is an absolute BEAST. The problem is that everyone knows it and double covers him. At the beginning of the season there were lots of man-to-man match ups for him and you can look at the stats to see what happened because of it.
If your defensive coach calls man coverage on him with no safety help, he will score you many many points…if not, you are out of luck for the most part until we get to the red-zone.

I’ve watched nearly every Denver game to watch him and he takes off SO MANY plays, especially when you guys are down. That’s gotta be annoying when he barely steps off the line of scrimmage…

Marshall has been nursing a hip injury much of the 2nd half of he season. It was kept quiet for the most part(by Marshall) until a couple weeks ago. I think the Broncos young core(Cutler, Marshall, Royal, Scheffler) are still trying to figure out the best way to play off of each other. Cutler will usually start going to one of them and stay with the hot hand. You’ll know what kind of game Marshall is going to have after the first couple of minutes.

Mile High
If this season has in anyway been disappointing for you, then you have mile high standards. Yes, it’s been up and down and your defense has been suspect at times but you have to feel good about the organization in general; meaning they will address the problems as best they can and will always be well coached. However, that’s an outsiders perspective. Do you and the others in Broncoland see any cracks in your organizational foundation or do the front-office personnel and coaching staff have the unconditional love of their fan-base. We’re somewhat removed from Denver’s SB years, so is Shanahan under any pressure from anyone other than himself?
BTW: In the unlikely event that the Bills actually win on Sunday, this would create an interesting match-up for you the last game of the season—an NFL schedulers dream.

As to cracks in the organization, not really, but I think we are all still stunned at the call yesterday late in the 2nd quarter. 15 seconds or so to go, we’re at our twenty or so, and Shanahan calls for an end run by Selvin Young, who hasn’t played in many weeks. At best, what is that going to accomplish? Then Young fumbles, and the Panthers get a cheap FG to go up 20-10. Idiotic, IMO. Being down 17-10 at the half in Carolina wouldn’t have been so bad, but to go idiotic like that is a bit much.
Maybe not as catastrophic as Jauron’s late call for a pass when Lynch was playing lights out, but…
At any rate, Shanahan is not beyond being second guessed.

Dick Jauwrong’s has an extensive rap sheet when it comes to bonehead calls. I guess most coaches aren’t immune to questionable decisions. I think success cloaks a lot of bad calls. People will view potentially disastrous play calls as gutsy or even genius if they work. In fact, if Selvin Young takes that run 80 yards to paydirt, Shanahan would look like a mensa, albeit one with a horseshoe stuck up in his a@#. Thanks for the reply!

The boneheaded call...
Unknown to many folks, Shanahan hasn’t been calling the plays on offense for years. He’s much more of a delagator now. A lot of us at MHR don’t like the move from west coast offense to spread offense, and feel the O coordinator is too aggressive and doesn’t use the run as much as he should. Shanahan isn’t above firing coordinators, and too many boneheaded calls may lead to a turnover, but one off the field.

Organizational weakness
It is funny to bring up that point. At the beginning of the season you would have had lots of Bronco fans grumbling about Shanny needing to get his crap together and make things happen. We do have very high standards in Denver and expect a competitive team.
But I think most of us see now where Shanny is taking us and how he has built a core of offensive talent that is set for years to come. Now this offseason he will in all likelihood target the defense and shore us up on that end.
by sadaraine on Dec 15, 2008 6:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh I remember those days...
When the Bills with Polian/Butler and Levy comprised a solid leadership core. It seems that they were able to strategically focus on areas and plug people in field a perpetually competitive team. It’s nice to see (that is outside of our division) examples of an excellent football operation…give us Bills fans hope, although I am a bit envious.

ZERO DISAPPOINTMENT, at least for me. The guys and gals that read MHR will tell you I have been saying 2008 is Year 3 of a 5 Year Rebuild that started when Shanahan drafted Jay Cutler in 2006. That process is continuing. The core of the team, on both sides of the ball, is young.
I pegged the Broncos as a 10-6 football team before the season. At the time I had no idea if it would be good enough to get into the playoffs. Now, 10-6 will win the West. Anyone who thinks winning a division, no matter how you get there, is a disappointment doesn’t know football.

Some would say we “should” win this game, but that means nothing to us this season. We have played horrible to really bad teams (Oakland, KC, Jacksonville) and have played lights-out against some of the best in the league (Jets, Atlanta, NO).

First, all San Diego had to do was win any of the remaining games after Week 2 — Miami, Buffalo New Orleans come to mind — but they couldn’t. Hochuli is old news, much like the Music City Miracle.
As for the running back situation, you’ll probably see a steady dose of P.J. Pope, Selvin Young and Tatum Bell…That is if any of those three could be considered a does of anything.

I hate Shanahan
Every year, I’m gullible. I always try to find the next Denver RB that comes out of nowhere. In my one league this year, I picked Young and Hall. I would have been better off picking Hall & Oates. In my other league, I picked up Hillis and got one week out of him. Damn you Shanahan! I did excel w/Mike Anderson like 2-3 years ago though….

Hillis would have been “the man” had he not tore his hamstring. Same thing for Selvin Young and the groin injury. Shanny loves to play musical chairs with his running backs to be sure, but this year has been about whoever is healthy.

I actually try to stay away from Denver RBs in fantasy drafts…I’ll pick up hot hands off the waiver if they are there, but otherwise, no way.
That being said, watch Hillis’s status next year. If he can stay healthy he will put up some monster numbers. I truly think he CAN be the answer for our RB situation. Time to heal up and show it though. (His injury was a fluke landing if you didn’t see it…anyone landing like that would have torn their hammy)
