Free Agents 2009

Below is a site for Free Agents for 2009.  Go over the guys who will be free agents.  In my opinion the Bills positional needs in order of priority are DE, LB, TE, C, SS.  This is obviously debatable as a Center could easily be argued to be our top need.  Other than the obvious names which the Bills wont get such as Julius peppers, haynesworth etc. who is feasable for us to obtain that would help those 5 positions listed above.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

My bad. I just spent a while going over it and am not thrilled with the 2009 free agent crop in the positions I would like improvement. I was looking for a rumbler to open my eyes since I am really struggling to see anyone (that the Bills would/could reasonably get) that I would really want. Maybe spicer from Jax. Maybe there are hidden jems that would be a good fit. I know I’m getting way ahead of myself but Im on the next step which is FA’s or draft.

LOL no, it’s no big deal, you guys are just way ahead of me. :)

Hmmm, who might come here on a reasonable deal

Some Notes first- I am not going to advocate for any RFA’s even though some are good people to look into like TE Leondard Pope, we need as many draft picks we can get, so I don’t think we’ll see any RFAs being bid on by us, unless someone is stupid with their tenders to the players.

SS-
Not even bothering to look, we got Scott and Whitner and were set for starters, I think we go depth late in the draft and will go with Wendling, Scott, Whitner and draftee with Simpson let go this offseason.

TE-
Jim Kleinsasser is a choice if the teams feels that Schou and Fine are good enough as pass catchers and that we need a real blocker (though I think Fine IS that guy) and Royal is released.

Desmond Clark isn’t horrible, but he has the dropsies like our buddy Royal, do we want to pay ALOT more money to another guy like Royal when we already have Royal on the roster, NO.

Checking http://www.pro-football-reference.com there is NO ONE of any real value in the TE ranks to bring in. I mean, unless someone gets cut after the season or put up on the block, we’ll need to improve via the draft.

LB- These are the 4 guys I like best for us, but most probably won’t make it to the market.
Eric Barton would be an interesting choice as he is 6-2 and 245 and is playing ILB for the Jets right now and could become our MLB if the Bills move Poz to the outside. He is 31 though, so would be a very short term rental if the plan is to draft his replacement later in the draft.

Jonathan Vilma Here is the guy who would MAKE me move Poz to OLB and play immediately. I’ve always loved this guy and though Mangini was a complete putz for forcing this guy to play ILB in a 3-4. He has shown smarts and toughness and I think he could do a world of good for the Bills.

Bart Scott yet another guy who could fit into a 4-3 coming out of a 3-4 D, he has size, toughness, and definetly an attitude after playing with the Ravens the past 6 seasons.

LeRoy Hill A solid OLB candidate, he has been an integral member of the Seahawks D the past few seasons. I love watching him play and he can get after the QB, he had 7.5 sacks his first season, and then they added Julian Peterson and let JP rush the passer. He would be a good move if the plan is to keep Poz inside.

DE/DT- I think both need improvement (depth at DT) and playmaking at DE
Tank (Too Many Guns) Johnson he would come relatively cheap, hasn’t played badly for the Cowgirls as a DE in a 3-4 but would be better as a situational DT than anything else. Worth considering due to the derth of talent coming out in FA this year we can get.

Jonathan Babineaux A very good rotation guy for passing downs, he is a penetrating style guy who has 3.5 sacks so far this season in the rotation in Atlanta. I wouldn’t mind seeing him replace McCargo. Plus with Berry and others coming out who can play either DE or DT and pressure the QB, he might come cheaper than expected.

C.J. Mosley Only played in 8 games so far this year, has 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks, only 1 start. Just hasn’t seen the field a whole lot, but very good size though at 6-2 and somewhere between 305 and 320 depending on source. May be a good rotational guy as well for us, and would come cheaper than most probably.

Demetric Evans Well, if we discount guys like Berry and Peppers due to either askign to much or getting franchised, we will be scrambling around lower level charecters like this one. With 3.5 sacks as a situational guy he is better already than Kelsay is hands down, and might even come at a substantial discount too!

Kenny Peterson Plays a hybrid DE-DT position, is 6-3 and 296, he has 3 sacks in 9 games for the Broncos but is 30, probably no better than depth guy, then again, outside of Schobel, we have nothing but depth guys already, we NEED to draft a young DE who doesn’t suck golf balls like Ellis.

C- Our most important hole to fill this offseason, lets see what we got available to us.
Hmmm, looking through their list, I am NOT finding any of of the guys most mentioned in being up on the FA market at this position. Is this an oversight, I am unsure, but thus unable to give any real thought on this, will look for such a listing.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

Birk, T.J. Houshmandzadeh (sp?) and Dansby. their on my list

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

by J2 on Dec 23, 2008 9:59 AM EST reply actions

T.J. will cost a lot to get. I’m not sure the Bills are ready to have both Housh and Evans making that kind of money.

Love the idea though.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Dawan Landry and Mike Brown. Then we may very well be able to say our secondary is in no need of any upgrade.

Landry is restricted.

I like Jason Brown of the Ravens, though I doubt he makes it to the first day of free agency.

that would be awesome

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

by poz on Dec 23, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Hecks yeah it would. He’s a very talented young player, and he’d erase a pre-draft need. (Not to mention we could take a defender in the first round, which needs to happen.)

Exactly

Birk will get franchised at a minimum if not an extension
Saturday will get an extension here in a couple of weeks, the Colts have seen how the line does without him and Peyton will fight to keep him.
Brown would be wonderful, but he won’t make it to the market and if he does, it will be a big scramble to get him.

Jason Brown should have been ours to begin with but Donahoe had some sick fascination with dook preston. Guh.

by sabre74kkn on Dec 23, 2008 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

Has there ever been another GM type more clueless than Donahoe who got a job in the NFL? Talk about a perfect example of the peter principle. His dispute with Cowher should have been a big tipoff. Oh well. We survivied.

everything goes better with a BIG MACK

Clueless??

The guy helped build our defense into back to back top 3 finishes and helped us get our only winning season this decade. If he was so clueless, I can’t imagine what you must think of this Marv/Jauron led job….

Donahoe’s biggest failure was not being able to build an OL and letting a few key guys walk….

Poz

WA good analysis but I dont see them moving Poz from the middle. But none of those guys listed are really big upgrades especially considering what the will cost. Vilma has lost a step, Brown got blownup by dallas even though the Ravens ran for a lot of yards, and we dont need any more injury prone players like Mike Brown. I am just not impressed with the crop of free agents. Maybe they grab a DT and move spencer johnson to DE and have him lose weight in the offseason.

by Berg79 on Dec 23, 2008 5:55 PM EST reply actions

As I noted, alot of these guys are at best depth pickups

And some will be brought in due to the derth of draft picks we have this offseason as of right now. Of course, if we only draft scrubs and Greer leaves for a 8-10 million a year contract, we’ll get some high comp picks. But unless the Bills truly plan on falling back and stockpiling picks, were going to see alot of guys like those above brought in for a look and maybe a contract due to the need for bodies.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

by WABillsfan on Dec 23, 2008 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

I would like 1 free agent starter at either DE, C, LB, SS (assuming WHitner goes to FS), or TE. I dont know if that is possible. Seems like the LB class is the best chance for us to get a starter but there is not much out there.

by Berg79 on Dec 23, 2008 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure of the accuracy of that list...

Since it list’s Roscoe, but fails to list Fowler…
I’ve used this one in the past, fairly reliable, and updated regularly….

For the offensive players, then follow link at bottom for defense….
