A Place To Vent
There were so many things that went wrong in the game so by all means have at it. Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. Duke Preston getting into a spat which cost Rian Lindell a chance at a FG at the end of the first half.
2. The consistent failure of the defense to contain the backside run.
3. Dick Jauron's utter lack of competitiveness.
4. The offensive line being repeatedly fooled by simple line stunts.
There was something of a positive, even if it's out of place to mention it here: Edwards was able to throw fairly effectively into the wind....once Jauron let him, you know, throw.
Anyway, vent away for we have a long, long offseason in which to be rational...

I am officially annoyed with DJ. I hope Wilson keeps him, but I won’t be torn up if he doesn’t.
Clock management was bad. Play calling was frustrating-throwing on 4th down, etc.
I still think we have a special team and a few more pieces and we are set to be dominant. And I think we can win with DJ, because when it comes down to it, our guys simply have to make the catches.
To this staff’s credit, they’ve shown that they can build a dominant run offense. A good pass catching TE and also FB and we could be all set.
Anyway, I’m done with football for the week. I just can’t handle it right now.
As I type and my anger level is rising, Cowher is seeming more and more appealing. I hope Wilson moves DJ to front office, because he does have a lot of football wisdom to offer, and maybe Cowher can live with that. We may not be the sexiest franchise, but you’ve got to believe that any prospective coach is drooling at the opportunity to make history with this group.

agreed. reason to look forward to next year

Couldn’t agree more. If you’re a great coach you look at the Bills and you know there is gold there. Young and so talented, this team can be molded into champions, which is why I worry that Turk will just waste that opportunity if he stays with the team.
I have to admit it now that the season is over: we sucked in 2008. That’s it. What a piss poor outing this year

poz i like the sentiment and i think great coaches should want to come to the bills, but they definitely don’t. The two main reasons are:
1. If you’re Bill Cowher, and they say move to Western New York so that Ralph can…not pay you, you’re going to say no.
2. Coaches don’t want to make a commitment to Buffalo while the franchise is in limbo. The chances are as good as not that in 3 years the team will have a new owner and a new city. A great coach isnt interested in going to Buffalo if they don’t know what they’re getting themselves into.
’
And it’s not like it matters, because Ralph is unwilling to bring in a guy like Cowher and give him too much power.

good point
about the teams future being uncertain. So are you saying you think we’re keeping Jauron for three years? This is going to be a long offseason waiting to see what direction this team is going to take

by poz on Dec 29, 2008 2:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
unfortunately
I think we will keep Jauron.
But my theory is that while the future of the team is in limbo, they’re not going to attract a big name outsider. Anyone who can avoid the situation, will avoid the situation. That’s why I think they need to bring in somebody who has no choice, but knows football. Marty Schottenheimer, for example. He’d take over the football operations, and the coaching, and in a year or two they’d be a 10-6 team, not a 7-9 team. I dont think Marty is a great coach, but he’s decent. And he knows football. And he might be the best we can get.

One more thing.
One reason Parcells and his type are very successfull is that they put the fear of God into players. Preston would not have dreamed of being such a dufus on a Parcells team. His career would be over.
Maybe we need that kind of fear with this young team—an in your face coach. I remember Cowher contemplating punching out someone who was running an interception back for a touch down against him. That’s a coach who isn’t scarred to mix things up a bit.

Well I wouldn’t think it was the only reason. The guy likes to build winners and he does a good job of it.
Detroit might be more appealing to him – if he can turn them around in 2 years or so then he can do it with anyone. come to think of it…..he can almost turn any team around. guys good at his job

Why what appealing about the New England job when he originally took it?
They were a worse team than the current Bills. 4 straight seasons with 6 wins or less, one of which was a 1 win season and the year before he started they were a 2 win club.
The Jets were 4-28 under Kotite before he took over.
The Cowboys had 3 straight 5-11 seasons before hiring Bill.
The precedent is there. Hell it’s his MO.

Jauron is 'good' for a consistent 7-9
by Ron From NM on Dec 28, 2008 4:53 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Why do I even bother with this team anymore?
I sat through another game (and the previous 2) freezing my ass off to watch this pathetic performance. Dick Jauron’s game management drives me nuts. Some of his decisions make me wonder if he is trying to lose. He is ultra-conservative at all the wrong times and tries something aggressive at the most bonehead points.
We ran the ball the first 15 or so plays with no sort of variance or attempt at throwing the defense off guard. It took us to be down 13 to take any shots down the field (not to mention we did it while we were throwing into the wind, not at all in the 2 quarters where we had the wind at our back). And then when we finally start to establish something, he tries to get tricky on 4th and 1 instead of pounding it with Jackson like it worked all day.
These complaints can likely be directly linked to Schonert, but it all eventually points back to Jauron. Head coaches are mainly responsible for game control, gameplanning (along with overall team philosophy), and making adjustments. Jauron has consistently shown that he is inept at all of those. It’s something different every week with this guy and he just shows he can’t make a rational decision at critical points in the game (or do so without wasting a timeout). Today’s Jauron circus continued with debacle at the end of the half and the wasted time out 1 minute in to the 3rd quarter on 4th down.
I say this now and yet I’ll still get excited about something this off season, giving me the same usual false hope next year. Then I’ll fork over the money and sit through another season of uninspired football…I hope this team finally proves me wrong next year.

I think 11th. SF and us are both 7-9, but it looks like we’ll have the slightly tougher strength of schedule (116 wins for opponents vs 114 wins for SF opponents). I believe those are correct. Dang it. If we’re behind SF in the draft again and they take a Patrick Willis right in front of us again, ugh!!

A sad end to an utterly PATHETIC season
Yet again, we are all disappointed. I haven’t wrote on this blog for sometime now due to the horrible frustration that comes with being a Bills fan (I have a really bad temper problem when it comes to sports). It’s amazing to me how disillusioned I was at the beginning of the season after starting 5-1. I look around at other teams in the league, namely teams like the Dolphins and I wonder HOW THE $!# can they go from winning one game last season to possibly winning the division? The answer, my fellow faithful Bills fans, is good ownership and a strong front office, both of which we lack. I'd like to say "FIRE D.J.!!" but I'm not sure if I can handle another "transition" or "rebuilding" then again that COULD be the solution. In the end I would like to say I see big things next year, but I say that every God#$~ year. So it has come to where I sit now, like every single year, at my computer, reading, looking for an answer, scratching my head. I would hate for anyone to question my loyalty to this team because I will forever be married to the Bills; I, like everyone else who reads this blog feels betrayed in the sense that our undying loyalty and constant support goes yet again unrewarded. We can sit here and put blame in all sorts of places but my blame goes right to the source, our senile owner.
I apologize for being all over the place with my ranting and raving but I clearly cannot think straight at the moment and it will take me an entire offseason to get excited for Bills football again.
0-6 in division games . . . sad.
I’ll lift my glass to my fellow loyal fans who care as much as I do and the players that give their all every single Sunday, but that is it.
Signing off, see you all on Draft Day . . . hell, maybe not until September.

How bout Whitner
I was at the game and let me tell you the absolute worst feeling I got was when Sammy Morris went on the cutback and Whitner met him at the line and he got absolutely trucked and the no gainer resulted in a 30 yd run.
It was bitter sweet irony that the man who guaranteed we would make it to the playoffs was pummeled out of his mind by a below average running back. Now its obviously not his fault alone that we missed the playoffs. . .again, but it was utterly painful to see our team captain (co-captain???) get schooled by a scrub.

This is a talented team with bad coaches. I hope Wilson meant this team is not talented enough in terms of coaching.
We need guys getting nasty and hitting hard. They are a bunch of pusses out there many times. They do all right, but for the most part they are week, and it is equally bad through strategy and motivation. This team needs an Enema, and I’d say fire the coach. Three sub par seasons, with only coaching screw ups as highlights.
This game, the miscalculation at the end of the half was the team’s fault, Jauron’s especially for not having his team ready for that circumstance, and the idea to pass on 4th and 1 was also very stupid when Jackson is tearing it up. Call a good play and make something happen. A Wildcat, anything. They are a team with good soldiers and a bad general.
I vote to fire him (jauron)

But too me, I think in this defense he is asked to do things out of character for him.

rewatch the game today
he walks into blocks. He stands and watches the play. I agree that maybe it’s the scheme’s fault. But he stands still, gets caught flat footed, and I repeat, no scheme is responsible for him getting shaken out of his shoes by jay cutler in the open field.
go look at the touchdown run. He begins the play by standing four yards deep in the endzone. He sidesteps briefly, then he runs directly into a blocker.
http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80db641d
I beseech all of you posluzny apologists to check out that play. It’s quintessential him.
Not trying to be a downer, but he needs to switch positions because he’s worse than DiGiorgio in the middle. And again, not being able to tackle jay cutler is inexcusable, whether they’re running the tampa 2, a 3-4, or just a FG block on every play.
Here’s the cutler play btw:
http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80d85a08

On that Cutler run, I’m not sure many players would have actually stopped that. I won’t fault Poz for that, even though I think he’s as overrated as they get.
He belongs as a 3-4 ILB, IMO. He just doesn’t move all that well and doesn’t even shed blocks that well. I hated that draft pick last year and feel it was a waste of 2 picks even more these days….He’s an all right player that is talked up too much by Bills fans.

we have no idea how that contract is worded….
could be a clause in there for making the playoffs this year.
look at Miami – Parcells has an option to walk if Huizuga (sp?) isn’t the majority owner and that looks to be happening right now. this is an example of how contracts can be worded in such a way that one side could walk if they wanted to based off of circumstance. hopefully their contract guys were smart enough to put a playoff in 2008 clause in there.
