My Verdict on DJ
From Peter King's iMMQB column:
Buffalo. Going winless in the division, blowing a field-goal try at the end of the first half Sunday because of undisciplined pushing and shoving with the Patriots, going 2-8 down the stretch. Those things have to infuriate Ralph Wilson, who is not a patient man. I could see him keeping Dick Jauron or firing him. It's 50-50.
The words that keep coming up when noted football men I hear talk about the Bill is they lack toughness, aggressiveness, discipline, nastiness, and execution. All of you know that I have tried to defend DJ as much as possible. I love his personality as weird as that sounds. He takes after Coach John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood, in believing that after every game that you lose, all you can do is have a short memory and get back to work. I truly believe he has a great work ethic and gets his players to work. However, he doesn't have the ability to run schemes to matchup against top coaches and his assistants don't have the brains either. Every play New England ran yesterday was the right play and they executed it to make it the right play. Every play for us is an adventure. The execution is not there. We all know we have many front office failures. We have yet to have a real impactful FA come year in the last 3 years. We have drafted pretty well, but we need a new overhaul.
Here it here first. MARVelous is officially on the can Dick Jauron bandwagon. It took me 17 weeks, and three 7-9 seasons to get there but I am here. I want toughness, aggressiveness, and competency on gameday. I don't care about personality, press-conference ability or any of that garbage. Belichick is the most depressing, dry personalities in the business. But he wins. I want to win. Ralph is 90. He better want to win too. He better make the change today. It's Black Monday. But if Dick Jauron is fired, it will be a memorable Monday for Bills Nation. The bigger question will be who can Ralph get to replace this man and how does he restrucutre his FO? Will he bring anyone from outside to at least consult?
It hurt for me to say it. I think the world of Dick Jauron. He is a class act. He never threw anyone under the bus. But he didn't win. His 3 year plan didn't work. He gave us Whitner, Lynch, McKelvin, Poz, Edwards, Stroud, Mitchell, Dockery, Walker, Robert Royal (JK) and others that will be good young talent to build around. But at the end of the day, it wasn't enough, and now it's time to dump the coach, restructure the FO, make some hard, tough personnenl decisions in FA, and have another stellar 2009 NFL Draft with the #11 pick. There is room for hope Bills Nation. I always Billieve. I just hope Ralph finds clarity of thought and makes the right decision.
I mentioned Coach Wooden. I am taking a personal course in Coach Wooden as I played College basketball and am a high school coach now. Coach Jauron I believe took a lot of "Woodenisms" into his coaching. Tireless work ethic, never blame anyone, and always look at yourself. I believe Jauron will be able to live with himself because he knows he gave it his all. I really believe that, and if somehow Ralph keeps him, Jauron will be no worse for the wear and will continue to strive to get us to the playoffs. But if not, he will move on and keep his head held high and $6 million dollars. Our next coach should have these "Woodenisms" in his teachings and the Bills will become a perennial contender.
A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.
I'd rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.
"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but what you should have accomplished with your ability."
I see the light. I am more concerned with how to fix this mess thought then berade Dick Jauron. So feel free to leave your criticisms to a mild hum, and voice any other opinions you have. The "inner circle" is in session this morning. Nine season of no playoffs is at the center of the discussion. Models from the Dolphins, Ravens and Falcons in 2008 are out there. How can we turn this around in 2009? Let's hear it Buffalo Rumblings. Time to really vent it out. I'm ready to wipe the slate clean, but what all do we need to see from old Ralphy?

Mangini and Marinelli fired
No reason to stop the firings today as we should fire DJ.
After Miami going to the playoffs and Mangini getting fired I think Ralph has two fire DJ for a few reasons:
1) who’s going to buy tickets next year if DJ is the coach?
2) Ralph has an infatuation with being better than Miami (Toronto game, not going to AFC North when divisional changes were being made) and them going to the playoffs i’m sure chaps his ass
3) if Mangini gets fired after his “trial” period then Ralph has to realize that its “ok” to end the experiment and try again
well Marv if you can be swayed then maybe Ralphie can as well. Hopefully Brandon is as smart as we think he is and is reading the press clips and knows that tickets will be very tough to sell next year. He may have some pull with Ralph.
we’ll see.
good post – good thoughts – welcome aboard the bandwagon because I went from keep DJ unless upgrade to fire him today
Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

1) The same schmuck as every year!!! If I lived in Buffalo, I would be one of those idiots buying tickets every year! We love the team, we can’t help it. Now, the people who come once a year, or are only casual fans, I bet they will be less inclined to buy tix. If Jauron returns, I’d almost guarantee we don’t sell out a couple of games unless we somehow become a good football team.
2) That is probably true. Maybe he’ll try to woo Parcells from Miami (haha yeah right, what am I thinking?) with a big contract and full power. Maybe he’ll go after Pioli (haha yeah right, what am I thinking?).
3) Mangini had 2 winning seasons and would have been in the playoffs this year had Brett Favre not been so awful for most of the season.
I just have a feeling Jauron is safe. If Ralph has to go back and talk to the Brandon’s and Modrak’s of the team, it’s pretty obvious he has no idea how to decipher what he’s seen on the field for 3 years. It’s been a pile of suckitude and there’s no defending it.

I hate Peter King
WTF is wrong this guy?
I could see him keeping Dick Jauron or firing him. It’s 50-50.
DERP. I could see Dick Jauron coaching the Bills next year. Or not. I could see myself eating tuna fish for lunch, or not eating it. It’s 50/50, I either do it or I don’t.
I can’t imagine what it’d be like to be behind him at Starbucks.
Not you Marv, just in general, but I keep hearing about all this great young talent on the Bills. Outside of Lynch, McKelvin, Williams, Edwards, Butler and maybe St. Johnson and Youboty, where is it? We’ve wasted a number of draft picks the past 3 years and gotten little to no impact players. We needed to rebuild and have a plan, instead the front office drafted a bunch of guys they thought were high character guys, though hardly superstar material. There’s a solid talent base, but with all the picks we had, we should have been able to build a much strong base, IMO. Yeah, coaching has been horrendous, but there’s another huge reason why we can’t make the playoffs, ever, and that’s because we have a subpar personnel department. We’re giving more power and say to Modrak now, even though his track record is spotty? I don’t like it. I wish we could just bring in a proven GM, that actually has a plan of attack….

agreed
k, i feel you. Which is partly the reason it took me so long to come around on Jauron. I never felt like we had the talent, and even what talent we had was mostly really young. The FA have just no really panned out and we have gaping holes that have never been addressed (ie DE, TE, FB, OLB) in the last 3 years.
The best way I can say it is that what we need is competent GM/HC relationship that does it all. The ENTIRE ORGANIZATION has to be better. I think Jauron has his faults but he has had no good QB play, no good OC, and a bend but don’t break defense that makes no big plays. We need someone that knows what they are doing in not only buying the groceries (players) but cutting the bad apples as well as replacing bad parts. We don’t need a complete roster overhaul, but there need to be significant changes. I’m seeing that clearly now

Here’s a history question. When DJ coached da Bears, what kind of defense did they play? Did they play a Tampon 2 then?

About time Marv
I don’t think this team is any better today then when Jauron was hired. I really don’t. We have absolutely no impact players on defense (mcKelvin may be but still too early to tell), our offense has no identity and is wildly inconsistent, we turn the ball over to much and don’t create enough turnovers. Jauron has been one of the decision makers w/regards to personnel for these 3 years. meaning he both coached and brought players on board who haven’t performed.
It’s time to add a GM that is a football guy first and let that individual hire a competent head coach. it’s time for Wilson to forget about the Donahoe hiring and focus on winning some damn games for a change.

The same
Even a player with a lot of promise, like Lynch, is no more productive than McGahee was…the Bills are not milking the talent they have, and until we get a real coach…we are done. Even the Levy hire, bway bck when, might have just been a stroke of luck, and it was lucky, and even more lucky, that we got polian…Polian got the talent, and Marv had the fire to get it going…I remember Marv pumping up those players and inspiring them to play, not kick field goals

I vote MARVelous the new bandleader so K can get a breather.
Let’s just for a moment say sanity takes over Ralph’s perspective and DJ is gone. Then what? Who could we REALISTICALLY get? And I do think we could lure Cowher here if the money was right. His comments this year have been very kind to us. BUT, IMO, not realistic.
I do not think Spags is realistic at all. He’ll want a brighter situation.
For this diehard fan the choice is Billick. BUT, ONLY if he accepts an assistant Head Coach for offense. Same with my second choice. Jim Schwartz, DC Titans.

Brian Billick is an offensive guy. He was the OC in Minnesota for 6 or 7 years before he got the HC job in Baltimore. He had little to do with the defensive success in Baltimore.

but I am not on the keep Jauron bandwagon, either. I am biding my time. I definately like the idea of Billick coming in to be OC. But would he?
