Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Difference between the Jets and Bills

Dick Jauron leads the team to a third 7-9 season, this time building up hope and expectation with a 4-0 start. That all came crashing down as the team lost 9 of the last 12 games. He's allegedly got a newly signed extension in hand...reportedly signed right after finding a new and exciting way to lose to the Jets, thereby officially putting a stake into the heart of any playoff hopes.

Eric Mangini started the year amongst high expectations as well. Jenkins, Faneca and Favre were supposed to lead the Jets to the promised land. They fought to a winning record (9-7) and had a playoff shot until, what, week 16? He didn't get an extension. Instead the Jets canned his duplicitous ass and will probably now be the leading contender for the services of a top defensive coordinator...like the one who happens to already work in their stadium for the other New Jersey team.

I think if Wilson fired Jauron the Bills could interview Spags and see if he wants to run an actual New York football team....but I think Spags can only interview this week or he'll have to wait until the Giants get bounced from the playoffs, which could be in February.

Poll
Should Wilson fire Jauron and chase Steve Spagnuolo? Or chase Spags and then fire Jauron? Wouldn't that be ironic? Wilson would be playing not to lose....
Yes, Spags is a great coordinator and runs a 4-3.

No, we need the consistent 7-9 Jauron brings.

yes

Spags and other coordinators with a boat load of experience I would go after. I want a defensive coach and Spags has a great resume. However, ultimately this comes down to the talent we get as well. If Modrak is the man guy he has to work wonders with the new HC. The working relationship has to be a superb fit for any new HC to come in and succeed

I think the defense is better talent-wise than you apparently do

We have a pair of good DTs in Stroud and Williams.

Our DEs generate no pressure and are okay against the run. That’s just not going to cut it so the team needs some starting quality DEs. Schobel has a name (not deserved) so if the Bills can get a RDE capable of generating pressure on a consistent basis the DEs would look a lot better.

I think Poz is a good MLB, though some think he should be playing at another LB spot. Okay, we’ve got 1 LB spot covered. Mitchell needs to be replaced (or better coached) and Ellison has no business being a starter. We’ll get Bowen and DiG back for depth but two starting caliber LBs are needed. Buffalo could put DiG at WLB and bring in a better SLB for next year.

McKelvin came on as a starting corner and McGee was solid. Youboty was doing well before his injury (and he’s the best tackler on the team) and Corner showed some flashes. I think we’re set at corner.

Whitner is an okay safety, nevermind that he got destroyed by a third string RB on Sunday, with the range to play at FS. Scott didn’t do terribly at SS, though the Bills could use an upgrade there. I last saw Simpson on a milk carton.

So, on defense I see a pair of immediate pressing needs (RDE, SLB) and several other needs (LDE, WLB, SS) that can be patched for the time being. I think a guy like Spags can work with what Buffalo has, particularly if the Bills address one of the pressing defensive needs in free agency and the others in the draft.

I think the body of your post contradicted the title. You point out how more than half of Buffalo’s defensive starters need to be replaced or “didn’t do terribly” and you are going to argue that this defense has anywhere close to enough talent?

If your point is that Steve Spagnoulo and a few new pieces could lead to a great defense than I agree under the assumption that those new pieces are pretty good ones.

by kaisertown on Dec 29, 2008 11:52 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Could Spags work wonders with our D? Eh, maybe in time, but we have no defensive end talent, which his teams in NY have had an abundance of. We have no speed at LB and our safeties are mediocre at best. We’d still need a sizeable overhaul to get to the level of his current D’s….

MARV had posted “If I were a GM of the Bills i would draft all DE’s, OLB’s and DT’s and sign from FA too. That Front 7 is brutal” on another thread.

My point is that I think Buffalo can improve with a starting quality RDE and SLB…and better coaching. It won’t be a great defense, to be sure, but better than it was this season. Besides, was defense really the reason the team lost games? Opposing teams scored just over 21 points per game. I think Spags would have something to work with, in a format (4-3) with which he is comfortable.

by Ron From NM on Dec 29, 2008 12:30 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed

and for the record that If I were a GM of the Bills i would draft all DE’s, OLB’s and DT’s and sign from FA too. That Front 7 is brutal" on another thread. statement was in jest and sarcastic because of our inept pass rush.

MARVelous

by MARVelous on Dec 29, 2008 12:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It may have been in jest but it isn’t entirely without merit. All an offense needs is a weak link or two to make a defense look really bad.

by Ron From NM on Dec 29, 2008 12:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It shouldn’t be sarcastic. We need players at those positions, either starter or depthwise. 2 DE’s, another DT and 1 or 2 LB’s that’s for sure. We need guys to get after the QB, create turnovers and play with a much tougher attitude. Ain’t no arguing that….

~K

by Kurupt on Dec 29, 2008 12:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what I meant

is that obviously are DL and front 7 in general needs help. Our scheme needs to change their too to put more pressure on the opposing QB. However, I didn’t want it to come off that I literally would draft all front 7 of Defense. However, we obviously need to add 3-5 players to our DL and LB corps total.

We have some players there as well. The Crowell article on is interesting if we brought him back With Stroud, Poz, Williams, Mitchell we have some big, physical guys. Now add 2 new starters to DE and LB and a new scheme and let’s see what happens.

MARVelous

by MARVelous on Dec 29, 2008 1:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Crowell, now that’d be awwwkwwaardddd. But ya know what? If we do make a coaching change, Crowell could be a good move to re-sign. I wouldn’t do it for more than a year or two deal, but it’d lessen the needs a bit. I’d still look for a mid round rookie to groom, that’s for darn sure.

I don’t think it’ll happen though. I think Wilson was too upset with him to allow the FO to actually resign him…..

~K

by Kurupt on Dec 29, 2008 1:15 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

also

of course Crowell should be open to playing here again. He’s not going to have many offers, if any, elsewhere coming off knee surgery….

The Jets and Browns are moving quickly

trying to land Cowher. If we move as quickly on Spags, we could get him. But who really expects Ralf to move quickly at his age.

when spags could be interviewed? this week only? Then you’d have to wait a month till they win another super bowl to actually hire him so you’d have to have a verbal agreement at the very least

I came online to talk about this very thing

Ron beat me to it but he says exactly what I was thinking. How can we sit on our hands after three 7-9 years but the Jets fire their coach after a pretty good year. Mr. Wilson must set the tone that being mediocre is just not acceptable anymore. The Falcons and Dolphins prove that with the right attitude and personalities you change turn things around quickly.

Why would Spags even be on the Jets list of possible new coaches? He shouldn’t even be considered for the Jersey Jets job considering their defensive personel. They would have to strip down and start over if they were going to switch over to a 4-3.

Calvin Pace wasn’t effective as a 4-3 end in Arizona and only started playing well when they stood him up and moved him around. Shaun Ellis could play some left end, but he is a 32 year old, 290 pound player who fits MUCH better in a 3-4. Kenyon Coleman is another guy who just doesn’t work in a 4-3, but is a very solid player in the 3-4. The Jets don’t have one DT on the roster who could actually rush the QB. David Harris and Brad Kasell are the only LBs who could transition to a 4-3 now that Eric Barton is a free agent.

With Favre possibly coming back for a second season there will be pressure on the team to try and win next season and hiring a coach who can use their current roster is a must for the Jets.

The Jets

have to make a splash as they are asking fans to pay for personal seat licenses and then season tickets for the new stadium. expect them to go hard at big time names in the pro and college level.

It may take them time to recover in terms of cap room…

by Ron From NM on Dec 29, 2008 12:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Players yes, coaching no

Mangini had been unpopular for awhile now. if they bring in someone that will illicit some excitement then the Jets have done their job. in the end their situation is not much different then the bills. they can bring in all the fa’s and draft picks they want, unless Jauron is fired this team will not succeed.

Browns looking for Scott Pioli

Rotoworld is saying that the Browns are in contact with Patriots GM Scott Pioli because they’re willing to give him more power than the Pats he’s supposedly listening to offers from them! I wish we would scrap ths inner circle now and get involved!

Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

There would be a better chance of keeping him longer than 2-3 years, which seems to be how long it takes for Parcells to get bored.

everything goes better with a BIG MACK

The ouija board might get better results....

To steal a line from Scott Adams:

Dogbert: “They say if you put 1000 monkeys at 1000 typewriters for 1000 years one of them will write the works of Shakespeare.”
Dilbert: “And mine?”
Dogbert: “Three monkeys, 10 minutes.”
