Alex Mack Scouting Report
Scott Wright and NFLDraftCountdown.com put up his scouting report for California center, Alex Mack. He obviously says very good things about him, but like me doesn't seem to be all that blown away with him.
I think as the draft approaches you will hear fewer and fewer "best center in 10 years" type of comments from respected scouts. He is a legit first round guy, but it should be an excellent debate right up until the draft as to whether or not he really is worthy of the 11th selection.

Thanks kaiser
I think the fact that he won the Draddy Trophy will mean a lot to the current front office.
Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

Thanks Kaiser for that report. Now that the season is over the draft pundits are coming out of hibernation. I do like the way ESPN NFL Draft Tracker breaks down a player too. Like their format. There sure seems to be two distinct camps here on Rumblings as to how to use our 1st round pick. I continue to think that it is the measure of this man that he will be a first rounder. He addresses our biggest black hole for a long time and will provide much needed leadership on the O line. With him our running game becomes elite. I’ll try to throw up other reports about him to get a good cross section of opinion.

Not that they should be taken as gospel, but I’ve seen a lot of mock drafts with us taking him….in round 2….

I like only 2 of the Centers
Mack and Luigs have the size and speed we need if we are going to start a rookie Center. I have seen mocks with the Vikes taking Mack in round one if they decide not to resign Birk. Same with Brown. Also, KC taking Mack in round 2 before we pick.

he is smaller and slower
I want a center that has the size to take on 3-4 NTs.

I watched about a quarter of the Emerald Bowl and I twice saw him bury Antonio Dixon on run plays up the gut. Admittedly, Dixon isn’t really a great talent, but he is big dude and he got crushed. Good sign.

I saw several hellacious pancake blocks by him.
But his ability to engage his man and turn him any way he wants was clearly evident

I made it a point to watch him in that game....
Although I wasn’t completely blown away to the moon by the kid….I was impressed. He seems like a mean SOB…something we sorely lack on this team. I agree with the report, he might be too aggressive (if that truley is a bad thing). Saw him pulling alot too…seemed pretty quick on his feet.
I kinda wished I watched more college ball to get more looks at him.
I also watched Unger play last night….didn’t seem as “overwhelming” to me as Mack, but I see he can play multiple positions along the line. I think we would be set we either of two.
There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?

Nice work kaisertown
IMHO, he is the real deal and I believe we can get him in the 2nd. ESPN Scouts rate him as 62nd best player with Unger rated a little higher.
Have to believe Beast Mode will lobby for his old team mate!

Alex Mack
He’s going to be a better center than Nick Mangold, who was drafted by the Jets in the late part of first round. He’s a very good run-blocker for a center, is extremely intelligent, is very tough-nosed and gritty, has played against generelly top notch opponents and would be a big upgrade over Duke Preston and Melvin Fowler. However, what this comes down to is if our coaching staff wants a veteran center in there (Matt Birk would be a useful temporary option for two years, although Jason Brown is probably the best one available.), which would be understandable. Brown, though, would probably be rather expensive.
If we could get a Bertrand Berry in FA, draft an Everette Brown, get Matt Birk in FA on a two-year deal and draft a guy like Fili Moala from USC to groom behind Stroud, then our D-line and O-line would be in a much better condition.
