Shanahan for OC

According to Adam Scheffter at NFL.com, Mike Shanahan has been fired in Denver.  Can't say I'm surprised.  Here is the link:

http://blogs.nfl.com/2008/12/30/broncos-fire-long-time-coach-shanahan/

I am starting the Mike Shanahan for OC bandwagon.  I like(d) Turk.  If you have a guy out there like Mike Shanahan and Turk sitting in the box, go with the proven hand who knows how to run the ball.  Turk might take a while and be great, but I like myt chances better with Shanahan.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

agreed

I wouldn’t hurt to try though….maybe he would like a break from head coaching?

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Al Davis tried to hire him?

I was thinking the same thing...

…but when I thought about it, its much more likely that Davis would only use it as a pretext to get Shanahan close enough to devour his flesh.

My guess the Chiefs might make a play for him if they let Herm go......

even the Jets might be intrigued by him

Whiel I would love to have Mikey here, he'll get work as HC somewhere else

The Jets, Chiefs, Browns and Lions are all desperately looking for someone to come in with some cachet. WIth the Chin supposedly only willing to listen to the Jets cash registers, I would put my money on Mikey going to the Lions who would pay him a HUGE crapload of cash to coach, especially since it would give them a splash with the fans, FAs would consider going there, and would buy the new GM and Vice Prez a couple more years of employment. I’m willing to bet on it, that he goes to the Lions.

Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

by WABillsfan on Dec 30, 2008 6:18 PM EST reply actions

Shanahan

Is either going to be a Coach and Vice-President like he was with Denver. His resume is good enough that he doesn’t have to be an offensive coordinator. Now, Romeo Crennel is another story.

by BuffaloWhiner on Dec 30, 2008 7:25 PM EST reply actions

i say he goes NYJ, maybe Cleveland….i don’;t see him sitting around, but you never know…he’s been as successful as Cowher, and he sat out a year. Being a head coach is hard, so he might stay away for a bit.

Anyone think Wilson could pull the plug anytime soon with DJ and just give Shanahan full reign instead?

That would have been a good thought, even though the post of the news conference has cetainly squashed that. But you know, how can we compete in the AFC East like this. Maybe the Jets do get him and then we are screwed. Now, if Parcells leaves, the Dolphins may flounder (pun?) and the Jets might screw it up still if Favre stays or goes, but the Patriots are still there, and we have to beat them….we just don’t match up and w don’t sack anyone…are we bottoms in the league?

Shanahan in Buffalo

Right, that’s gonna happen. Let’s bring Parcells in as OC while we’re at it. I’m sure Ralph will spend more for them than he does for a head coach.

This season has been the worst feeling ever provided by our Bills...a feeling of humiliation. Starting out 5-1 and finishing in last place has been a very cruel tease.

Buffalo is perfect for Shannahan

Because our HC has final say on personnel.

He’s a run first type of guy, which fits Buffalo
He’s a guy that knows how to build a team for the elements like we have in Buffalo.

When Wilson announced that Jauron was staying it was before he knew that Shannahan was available, maybe just maybe Jauron could still get axed? Sorry, I just woke up – must have been dreaming again!!

I wouldn’t want him even if we could get him.

If Shanahan settles for a offensive coordinator gig, it would only be for one season while he waits for the right opportunity. I’m betting that if he does settle for a one year stop-gap it will be as the quarterbacks coach and assistant to HC in Houston.

Shanahan is a zone blocking guy and Buffalo’s running game would be worse with Shanahan around because of it. Our current lineman couldn’t fit much worse in a zone blocking scheme.

I know what many will say and that is that he can just call the plays, but use our power scheme, but I’m not so sure that he can. When someone is a genius in something it doesn’t mean they will be a genius at something similiar (ie: Mike Martz as a pass happy down the field guy who is a genius at that, but wouldn’t do well calling plays even if he was trying to use a run first and short passing attack).

The only reason I would be interested in Shanahan is if you hire him as the OC and then fire Jauron next offseason, Shanahan would probably be first in line to be the new HC.

And if anyone is curious as to how I could see the Bills switching to a zone blocking scheme, you would have to cut Langston Walker and move Brad Butler out to RT where he would still be a little tall for the scheme, but you can get away with tall OTs. Jason Peters is good enough to play in any scheme, but I think he wouldn’t be as effective a run blocker as he is now. The good thing about a zone blocking scheme from where Buffalo stands is that it is much easier to find an effective center and it would be much less of a priority. Dockery also would have to be cut as he is way too big and unathletic. So you would need to find an entire new interior to the offensive line.
