Dick Jauron to remain Buffalo Bills head coach
It figures this news would break THE EXACT SECOND I hop in my car for my 45-minute commute from Rochester to my residence. Them's the breaks.
The Buffalo News is reporting that Ralph Wilson has decided to retain head coach Dick Jauron. The embattled head coach will roam the sidelines in Buffalo for a fourth season in 2009.
Wilson's entire statement:
It is well known that I share many of the fans' dissatisfaction with our offensive game management. That being said, I believe that this team, at this time, is better served by coninuity in the coaching staff rather than a disruptive overhaul. The team played hard all year long and there are many positives to build on. This is not to say that we will be complacent. in my discussions with Dick and our senior football people the issues are recognized and I am confident they will be addressed.
I believe in the last few years we have gotten close personnel wise and look forward to another strong draft, more assertive veteran leadership and continued improvement from our young quarterback.
I'm going to need a night or so to digest this. Much more opinion from me on the subject when I can. In the meantime, keep it clean, folks. Disappointing day in Bills Nation to say the least.

Jauron yes, Schonert?
I just hope (although unlikely) that Schonert gets the can I dont see what he did that was good. He was great for a few weeks before teams had a chance to break down his plays and watch the film, and then he was so blatantly predictable that he was terrible.

I will have no problem if Jauron stays so long as Schonert goes
Kawika Mitchell is a leader. He will help this young team develop.

Possibly, or possibly not
This line could mean staff changes:
This is not to say that we will be complacent. in my discussions with Dick and our senior football people the issues are recognized and I am confident they will be addressed.
Then again, this line could mean nothing will happen staff wise:
I believe that this team, at this time, is better served by coninuity in the coaching staff rather than a disruptive overhaul.
I’ll believe changes will or will not happen based on what comes out of OBD in the next 7-10 days as more people get canned from staffs around the league.
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?

agreed
good interpretation…..time will tell. Obviously at the meeting today stipulations were agreed to by Jauron. Lets hope those include as CB at bb.com speculates one of them is maybe someone to help him with his clock management skills. If I were Jauron. I’d watch Bill Belichick’s tapes and copy him. And I’d spend all off-season trying to figure out how the hell you can beat your divisional foes. Time to work harder than he ever has

I strongly believe that the first line you referenced means that Wilson and his brain trust aren’t going to be complacent in fixing the talent issue. Reading between the lines, Ralph wants more talent. Actually, you don’t even need to read between the lines… he’s made it painfully obvious.

Just how much continuity?
“Wilson elected to retain Jauron and the entire coaching staff, believing the team is "better served by continuity in the coaching staff rather than a disruptive overhaul.”
This, to me, is the most disturbing aspect…. From what i’ve heard so, DJ will be retained “thru” the 2009 season. I wonder if Ralph has something up is sleeve for next year. But I will stop speculating untill more news is released.

Did anybody expect that Wilson would fire Jauron?
This is probably the best news for Bills fans. Remember Wilson is a practical busnessman first and Bills Fan second. By retaining Jauron, Wilson will need to perform some marketing moves to hold fan base, not only in Buffalo, but also Toronto. That being said, he will probably demand and financially support the Bills making many and strong moves in the free agency market.

Strong moves in free agency?
If history is any guide, Buffalo won’t be making a splash in free agency. The closest Buffalo has come to a really active free agency was the year the Bills signed Dock and Walker. I don’t know that “We got a free agent center” is much of a rallying cry for a disgruntled fan base….
by Ron From NM on Dec 30, 2008 7:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
History is irrelevant at this point. This move dictates that the Bills NEED to do things differently just to sell tickets. I think they’ll be more aggressive than ever in acquiring new talent.

There are many ways to make a splash...a turd makes a splash,
and we have had enough of those. Peters must be licking his chops, he is almost certainly part of the big splash. We assume this means getting some quality free agents. They will have to be some big names like Birk or Brown for starters, hell, we all know where the holes are. I can’t wait to see if they can actually convince top notch FAs to come here.

I know i'm gonna catch hell for this but...
I actually think that Schonert should be retained. Yes, he made some HORRIBLE decisions (usually including passing on first and second downs inside the 5 yard line) but i think the offense he has implemented overall is not a bad one. I think it’s not that these guys don’t know how to coach, it’s that they have made bad decisions.
Schonert is a first-year guy, and though he often is too conservative when he should be aggressive (and vice-versa), but there are lots of coaches who have made bad decisions. The slide at the end of the season was embarrassing, but they did play in a good division (all three teams had a chance to make the playoffs up until the last week of the season), and they went 7-3 against non-AFC east teams. (That does make their 0-6 record that much more pathetic, I am aware.)
I just think that they DO have a solid foundation, and with a “player’s coach” it may be possible for them to lure some free agents. Also, it makes the franchise look semi-stable rather than the usual 3-year cycle that they’ve had with their last coaches.
Yes, I’m probably fooling myself, but I think it could be worse. Cowher wasn’t coming here, and there is a real dearth of head coaches. Even Tony Dungy got a guy who could finally help him manage the clock.

Fewell did a worse job than Schonert. The team put zero pressure on the quarterback and they still refused to blitz ever. Plus if Posluzny isn’t horible and it’s just the scheme, that’s Fewell’s fault too.

I wont blame scheme for lack of pressure. I’ll put that more on personnel. Our wasn’t that bad this year (def. not great), but they kept us in games. But this could also be attributed to the quality of opponents we faced this year.

absolutely
the lack of pressure definitely had to do with our personnel, namely our DE’s.
However, don’t we need to blitz in that case? Fewell never, ever blitzed. And if he ever did blitz, the blitz were so easily picked up. I think that, while part of it is personnel, another part of it is a lack of urgency and a lack of creativity.
But yes, they did keep us in games.

Lets hope this ends up like the Giants and Tom Coughlin. Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004. In 2006, expectations were sky high and the Giants finished 7-9 and everyone wanted him fired. The Giants kept him for one more year and Eli Manning in his 4th season won the Super Bowl. Not to say that will happen but lets hope it will as Jauron worked with Coughlin and employs a similar philosophy. I am on board. I know fans want change, and nothing the organization says now will cure their feelings, but I believe come 2009 season this team will be in a good situation if Edwards finds “it.”
MARVelous
by MARVelous on Dec 30, 2008 6:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That only happened because of one thing MARV
Coughlin went from a strict disciplinarian approach to the game, which the team needed after Fassel’s buddy buddy years as a coach. After whipping them into shape, he then changed his on and off field demeanor and approach to handling the players which was much looser than before. Suddenly the players were given more freedom to play and be themselves, and so they played with reckless abadon on the field, BUT with the disciplined underpinnings Coughlin hammered into them.
Our team DOES NOT have that core of tough, trained, no mistakes football hammered into them. Why? Because DJ is a buddy buddy coach, and he will never be able to become the harsh taskmaster such a young team needs to become good. Its just like Wade Phillips claiming he will be “tougher” never going to happen, and no one will/would believe him anyway. Its easier for a tough coach to be nice than it is for a nice coach to become tough.
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?
by WABillsfan on Dec 30, 2008 6:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i disagree
people don’t change like that. Coughlin’s disciplinarian crap is way overrated. He fines players for being late and things of that nature and is more of a yeller, and in SI players rated that Couglin is the coach they would least like to play for. These are professional athletes. Every coach reaches his players in a different way.
You think just cuz a coach yells and screams players are better trained? No, look at Dungy. That is so overrated. People always bring up the Dick Jauron doesn’t yell and scream and show emotion so he isn’t a good coach. If anything, the pressure for 2009 will require more discipline and the staff will realize that 2009 they are coaching for their jobs which will hopefully result in more wins. All that matters is this team improves its roster and wins more games. Jauron will do that.
Pressure will make him tougher and have less temperment for errors and undisciplined play. This could be a good thing

Despite not being a great coach, he managed to somehow pull off a winning season in Chicago. Tom Coughlin was considered a dead man walking until he pulled off one of the biggest Superbowl upsets. Now maybe it isn’t likely, but these things do happen

Coughlin had numerous winning season prior to last year. He made adjustments to improve his coaching to and improve his team’s morale. I wish we could have seen something like that here.
How could history disagree with me anyhow? We should expect a winning season because Coughlin won the Super Bowl? How many coaches, besides Belichick (in his next job), had 3 straight losing season somewhere to start his tenure and still went on to being successful???

If they don’t lead the team to the playoffs in 2009, his tenure will most likely be over. If the Bills DO make the playoffs (as a result of adding some more talent via FA and the draft, improving game day management, and some luck), the current staff will be back for 2010.
Every year each team has a 37% chance of making the playoffs, a 6% chance of playing in the Super Bowl, and a 3% chance of winning it. Been supporting the Bills for their entire existence, and got spoiled along with all the rest of you fans during the Super Bowl years. Since we’ve been out of the playoff chase for 9 seasons now, it’s been tough to stay loyal. When they win, the week goes great. When they don’t, it hurts. But still we get up, complain about what we would have done differently, and watch the next week. Sometimes you just have to keep the faith, and this is one of those times. The Bills will be back in the playoffs at some point, and they will get back to the Super Bowl and win it. If it can work for the Red Sox, it can work for our team.

Cowher is going to the Jets since two of his daughters live in that area. If he was not interested in Cleveland job, he surely would not be interested in coming to Buffalo. He is living in Raleigh to be closer to family and that is why he left the Steelers.
Shanahan will probably end up in Cleveland with Pioli, the GM from New England.
Bills should make a run at Mike Martz as offensive coordinator.

cowher
is not coaching in 2009 according to Adam Schefter and he guaranteed that.
No Mike Martz….I bet they retain Schonert too. This is not good if they do

I gotta be honest though…Turk trumps Martz any day for me. That guy is cancerous to balanced football.
by TheAfghanTwilight on Dec 30, 2008 7:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah because Turk was super balanced this year. More like chemically imbalanced.

Turk had his problems
but all Twilight said was that Martz was worse
by Hopefulcynic on Dec 30, 2008 10:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly. It was Turk’s first year. Perhaps he will have learned from his mistakes. Perhaps he’s also on the hot seat and we just don’t know it yet. Mike Martz has been doing it so long, it’s habitual.

If Cowher was definitely not coaching
he wouldn’t be talking with the Jets.
by ccthemovieman on Dec 30, 2008 7:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
As Adam Schefter said, Cowher is too smart to consider himself above talking to interested owners. It’s expected by Schefter that he’ll do with New York’s Woody Johnson exactly what he did with Cleveland’s Randy Lerner – politely inform him that he’s not interested in coaching in 2009 and asking him to remove his name from consideration.

Cowher
John Clayton said that if the offer is right, then Cowher may go to the Jets. But true, Cowher has not agreed to anything yet. And Jets supposedly are going to try and make him highest paid coach with offer.
And I live in Raleigh and it was reported that Cowher, an NC-State grad, is going to be in NY to speak with the Jets this week.

Folks is you really want to voice your displeasure with the move (non-move)
Then simply stay home on gameday. Don’t buy that overpriced Jersey. If Schoenert isn’t a goner, this team surely seems to be doomed in the immediate future.
by TheAfghanTwilight on Dec 30, 2008 7:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yeah
I heard that, but reportedly he just wants to keep face and keep everyone wanting him. Then when his daughter graduates this year from high school in 2010 he will be ready to coach

yeah
if you don’t like it exactly don’t go to the games and don’t buy the merchandise. The dust will settle. Free Agency will come, the draft will come, and hope springs eternal every August for all 32 teams and it will for us as well

the continuity of sucking?
is that what that crazy old man is thinking of, because if thats so, he made the right decision.

Look on the bright side
If there really is one – How did the Cowboys and Patriots both not make the playoffs. Especially the Cowboys, who practically have quite a bit of talent. Either it’s the TOO and Pacman effect, or the Romo is overrated effect, or both – Or it could be that they hired a former Bills coach!

Continuity
Of waisting your timeouts in first quarter, passing on 2nd and goal when you have been running the ball down there throats, and the continuity of drafting busts like Duke Preston, Coy Wire, Mike Williams, Hardy, etc., etc.
by BuffaloWhiner on Dec 30, 2008 7:22 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Coy Wire wasn’t a bust because much was never expected of him.
by TheAfghanTwilight on Dec 30, 2008 7:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
and hardy has played like 13-14 games in the nfl. let’s be a little patient before labeling him a bust. I’d put Poz, Whitner and McCargo all higher on the bust list than Hardy.
by JPH on Dec 30, 2008 7:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I bet McCargo didn’t vote to retain Jauron.
by TheAfghanTwilight on Dec 30, 2008 8:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Also...
Wire/Williams were Donahoe picks in 2002.
Also, Preston was like a 5th round pick, and Hardy has been a disappointment but I don’t know that he was the worst pick considering not too many other rook WRs did that much this year. They have had at least as much success with their early picks (Evans, Whitner, McKelvin, Lynch) as flops (McCargo, Losman) over the last 5 drafts.

mangenius
no surprise about DJ. not terribly disappointed, because I don’t see any obvious alternative. would love to see schottenheimer, but don’t see ralph coming up with that kind of dough nor marty coming to work for our circle of jerks. do need to shake up our staff though. play calling was often brutal, but i don’t want mike martz and shanahan is obviously not coming to Buff as an OC. I would take Mangini as a DC. The guy can coach. much like belichek, he was in over his head as top guy so young, but he will be back. Plus maybe he helps us win a game or two in the division next year and then takes over the reins in 2-3 years, when DJ moves upstairs where he belongs.

He might at the very least get to the heart of why that play was called on 4th down against his defense. Oh how fun it was to have Losman in a Bills uniform.

If by fun you meant unbearably painful to watch.....then yes!

"May your QB play like Losman"
One of the worst curses in the NFL. Second only to “May your owner be like Al Davis” and “May your GM be like Matt Millen”

Losman vs. Leaf – who wins?
by TheAfghanTwilight on Dec 31, 2008 7:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Neither, they would both lose and end it in a tie
Unless there was fan voting, then JP would win due to the awesome shrub he has growing on his face.
Now if only this gopher could play DE, we would be doing better, I mean, who couldn't play better than the corpse brothers Kelsay and Denney?
