I hope I'm not jumping the gun too much here but I need an upper after yesterday. We have the #11 pick next April. IF we stand pat at 11, the question is, who do we go for? I still want Mack but with DJ returning we may very well go D first. It is hard to judge OBD based on our history. (I never would have chosen Whitner at#8) And, not all underclassmen have declared yet. So, leaving out Mack, here we go. Some new years food for thought.
DE
Orakpo (likely top 10)
Michael Johnson (big and scouts like him)
Selvie (projected late 1st)
E Brown (projected late 1st)
DT
SenDerrick Marks 6'1,290
B J Raji 6'1, 325
Peria Jerry 6'2, 305
OLB
Aaron Curry (hey, ya never know) 6'3, 245
Brian Cushing 6'4, 255
Clint Sintim 6'3, 255
ILB
Rey Maualuga 6'3, 260
James Laurinaitis 6'3, 243
There are an awful lot of impact players there. I am crossing my fingers that our esteemed coaches move Poz to the outside. In that case we would not draft an OLB in the first. Maualuga is slipping on some boards because he sometimes takes bad angles and overpursues. But he IS an impact player. If Orakpo is available at 11 we MUST take him (this is without Mack in the picture). If he is not there, a LB or DT might mean more of an impact. At DE, Hardy, Shaughnessey or Middleton (one of those) will be available to us in the second. They are big boys. Who tickles your fancy?
As another aside, there is another good stat site offering a different perspective. It is sfa.stats.com/fb/notes.asp. Follow your way into players by position and go to tackles. Compare Peters to the good ones. Interesting stuff.

Another DE I left out and who should be considered is Aaron Maybin 6’3, 250 fron Penn State. He is an eligible sophmore. Very highly regarded.
everything goes better with a BIG MACK

Thanks for that site. The comparison of Peters to some of the best LTs (e.g. Jake Long) is striking.

The only guys on that list that I would consider with a pick as high as 11 are Michael Johnson, Brian Orakpo, Aaron Curry and maybe BJ Raji or Laurinaitis.
I know Brian loves Cushing, but I wouldn’t touch him in the first round. He is too big and unathletic and his production leaves a lot to be desired too. What exactly do people like about him?
Clint Sintim isn’t even remotely close to a fit in our defense. As a strong side linebacker in a 4-3 defense, I wouldn’t draft him until the third round or so and it looks like some 3-4 defense will draft him at least a round before that.
I don’t think Maualuga has the kind of athleticism and coverage skills to be anything other than an average MLB in a 4-3. I think he is a lock to end up in a 3-4, or in a blitz heavy defense where LBs don’t do much covering (like Philly).
I love Peria Jerry, but I don’t think he is special enough to draft at 11, especially since DT isn’t a huge need. He definitely won’t last past the first round.
Marks is OK, but he is more of a late first round guy to me and if I were drafting a DT I would be more interested in the eventual replacement to Stroud than an athletic penetrating guy.
I’ve already given my 2 cents on why I am not that high on Selvie and Brown and Maybin fits into that group too. Penn St. only lists Maybin at 236 pounds and will almost definitely max out around 250 and play in a 3-4. He shouldn’t even be in the discussion for the Bills.
I am much higher on Greg Hardy than most. I think a good combine will make him a top 20 prospect and a legit option at 11.

I agree with everything you said. My favorites would be one of the big DE’s (Orakpo or Hardy), Raji or Laurinaitis. Don’t know why I left Hardy out. I have no problem with his injury concerns. I agree with you that his stock will rise going forward. Maualuga is overhyped but somehow grades out about even with Laurinaitis. I threw in Maybin because he is getting a fair amount of press. Too bad he is not bigger. Peria Jerry is a good one too but Raji would be a better #11. I woud also take Laurinaitis over Cushing. I would take Hardy over Michael Johnson. There will be quite a few impact players available at 11.

You build a line from the middle outward
Stroud and Williams would be so much better with a space eater anchoring the line next to them. Give me Raji…..Raji……Raji!!!!!!

WHere would Stroud and Williams play????
Raji WIlliams and Stroud all in at the same time?

Williams would be 1st off the bench in the rotation.

We just handed him a fat contract
and we have glaring needs in other spots. He has played very well this year. Leave him on the field

I guess I didn't think it was that fat.
I agree Williams has played well, but he is not a space eater. We need another DT.

Why are we looking at DTs right now when we have so many other needs?
Stroud and WIlliams can hold down the fort. Draft a guy in the 5th or 6th and develop him like Williams. He can be a backup this year.

DTs that command double teams will free up our DEs and LBs to flow to the ball and make plays.

True
I just think we have bigger needs when Williams had a very good year.

I agree
We would have to address at least some of them in FA for that pick to make sense. Remember, the original premise of this was that Mack was off the table.

Mack goggles
I think Mack will be available in the second round. DE @ #1.

Unless Luigs
does well at the Senior Bowl and/or Combine, there is only one Center (Mack) that I think can start day 1 for us. Now, if we get a FA like Birk or Brown, then I will reconsider. Until then, I really don’t think Mack will be there for us in the 2nd round, so we should either trade back and take him later in the 1st or screw the “value” argument and take him at #11.

We need an impact player at 11
That being said, not a center.
DE – Orakpo, Hardy, Johnson
or OLB – Curry – lots of mocks have him hanging around if all the underclassmen declare.
I feel Unger, Mack, Luigs or Caldwell could come in and start at C and one will be there in Rd 2 or 3.

we have to get a de or a great mlb . please keep jason one less major worry
