Fair Weather Fans

A lot of people on these boards seem like fair weather fans to me.  Everyone wants to build a great franchise right?  To build a great franchise you have to bring it talented and high character guys through the draft and free agency.  While Dick Jauron has been at the helm, he has been given a large say in who the Bills bring in through the draft and free agency.

It is my belief that Jauron has done a superb job of bringing in high character and talented players through the draft.  A lot of the guys he has brought in are still young, and I think fans need to wait until those players develop.  You guys forget that when Jauron came in, he basically started with nothing.  He has come in and given this team direction.

Sure, I have questioned his decision making in critical situations too, but if you look at it, even the greatest coaches make poor decisions.  Look, coaches make gametime decisisons like Jauron does all the time, it's just that the ball bounces their way.  Getting rid of Jauron, a guy who has brought in high quality talent and character would be a poor decision.

As mad as everyone is, I think most of us can agree that Jauron has given this team direction and given it great potential.

In conclusion, I like what Dick Jauron is building here in Buffalo and I am glad Ralph Wilson decided to keep him.

Many of you are fair weather fans because you want everyone gone when the team is losing, and everyone to stay when the team is winning.  Some of you may have wanted Jauron out when we were 5-1.  However, I bet that a lot of fans flip flopped.  The liked Jauron at the beginning, and now they don't like him.   Many of you need to realize that Dick is building a very good franchise here.

High character is appealing

however i dont see the correlation between it and success.

Look at the Patriots: Bill Belichek is hardly high-character. They won with Corey Dillon, who whined his way out Cincy. They’re winning with Randy Moss, Junior Seau, etc.

The fact is, while I like high character guys as a fan, i’d rather have guys who win.

And liking jauron when they win and hating him when they lose isn’t being a fairweather fan. It’s holding your coach responsible for what he does.

Being a fairweather fan would be loving jauron in week six and calling yourself a dolphins fan this week.

Tom Brady is high character

Wes Welker, Tedy Bruschi, Adam Vinetieri (when he was there)… these are high-character. Junior Seau is a hard worker, perhaps why he is still playing. We just don’t like him cause he talks too much and showboats. When you put Corey Dillon or Randy MOss onto Tom Brady’s team and say to them “Drink the Kool-AId or you’re out of here” I think that says a lot.

Maybe

but then why have him as a coach instead of a gm? i mean yea great hes bringing in some quality players but hes not a good gameday coach. I never really liked jauron. i do give him his respect thats due. he did a great job at the beginning of the year and then his flaws outshined what he did well. I dont think u can argue that he coached a good game against denver and dallas last year or arizona and the second jets game this year. According to his demeanor we dont kno who is actually calling the shots on the field. he says he is but who actually knows. he takes the blame for everything that goes wrong. I dont like him. Id rather have a coach that can manage the play clock correctly and lead his team instead of being everyones friend.

Honestly....

I stumbled upon this site earlier this year….around the times OTA’s started, and I made my first post right after the first preseason game with the Skins. And I must say, the posters here have to be least fair weathered fans on the net. Go check out BB.com of The Stadium wall…and then relish the fact Buffalo Rumblings is in existence. Every now and then I’ll to TSW, but only for a laugh.

Many of you are fair weather fans because you want everyone gone when the team is losing, and everyone to stay when the team is winning

I am impressed with the football knowledge on this site, which leads me my next statement. I don’t think the overwhelming majority of the folks here want to completely “purge” our roster. They are just stating facts that this entire organization as a whole needs major (too strong?) upgrading. I have been hearing this argument since i first started reading here.

Sure, I have questioned his decision making in critical situations too, but if you look at it, even the greatest coaches make poor decisions. Look, coaches make gametime decisisons like Jauron does all the time, it’s just that the ball bounces their way.

I agree….to a point. DJ has an unusually high aptitude in this area.

He has proven himself and his team are…well mediocre to average. Don’t think all of a sudden people have suddenly been down on Jauron, but as fans, we tried to have a little faith. He has definetly done some good things while being here, and I for one was a proponent for keeping him for a 4th year. I didn’t want to blow it all up and start over. But I have seen the light. I am pretty convinced that DJ and his staff aren’t gonna get us to that next level, and I would have rather started at the end of this year until having to wait next year, or next year, or….. next year (a Bills fan’s mantra for the past decade).

As far as the front office, what a mess right now. Please give me some example of when this “Inner Circle” thing minus a true GM has worked. (I’m serious, because I just don’t know often other teams have even used it in the past)

I think DJ might be a good guy personally, but HC material he will probably never be.

Getting rid of Jauron, a guy who has brought in high quality talent and character would be a poor decision.

Why not? His team actually regressed in his third year…after brought in all that high quality and character. This is a business, and the name of the game is winning. And I don’t mean going to the playoffs. I don’t mean winning a playoff game, of the AFC Championship.

I’m talking Super Bowl baby….and not just getting there, I’m talking about winning the Super Bowl do you really think that with DJ leading these players and this team on the field and The Inner Circle off the field can provide its fans a Lombardi Trophy?…

There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?

by MonStarr_716 on Dec 31, 2008 7:23 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

do you really think that with DJ leading these players and this team on the field and The Inner Circle off the field can provide its fans a Lombardi Trophy?

Yes I do. You are using wins and losses as a metric to determine the direction this team is going. I agree that wins and losses are very important. However, I don’t think this team has regressed.

His team actually regressed in his third year

I completely disagree with this statement. While Jauron has been here, he has helped fill in many holes for this football team. I think they are very close to being a consistent winner. If you don’t think so, that is your opinion.

You are only using wins and losses. I think you have to look a little deeper than that. And, I think wins and losses are important too.

Agreed

This team is leaps and bounds better than the one he inherited.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 1, 2009 7:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All that really matter is W’s. We’ve been 7-9 for 3 straight years now. How exactly are we leaps and bounds better now? We’re still outcoached, outmuscled, outplayed every week, can’t beat good teams and still stink on O. Really, I don’t see how this team can be considered much better than a few years ago..

we HAVE regressed

how can you say that we haven’t regressed? same record but 0-6 in the division. you need to win the division. to say we have not regressed is wrong

Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider

by J2 on Jan 2, 2009 9:33 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

good point

on the division record….

sure maybe overall we’re a slightly better team, but losing ground in the division and going winless there is just pathetic. that’s a good sign of regression or at least being no better than before….

Calling someone a “fair weather fan” means that they’re only fans of the team when they’re winning. Fair weather fans are the folks who completely ignore football when “their team” sucks, and pretend to be the biggest fans ever when “their team” is good.

Not a single person here is a fair weather fan.

Yeah, I enjoyed snow-blowing at 6:30 this morning.

Nobody on this site is a fair weather fan. some are more passionate about the bills then others and want wholesale changes when things are going wrong.
I for one do not feel this team is any better off then when Jauron got here. I truly believe Jauron is incapable of producing a winner year after year and his historical record proves it. I don’t have high hopes for next year but attempting to get better via FA and the draft may temper my low expectations.

by gatornation on Dec 31, 2008 10:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think everyone is putting their finger up in the air, taking note on how the wind is blowing, and then screaming to get rid of Dick Jauron. That is fair weather in terms of Dick Jauron. Not in terms of the Bills.

Many liked him when we were winning. Now many don’t like him because we started losing. I think fans, including the people on these message boards, are being irrational in wanting to fire a guy who has done a really good job of building this team. You can’t just look at wins and losses. It’s ridiculous to only look at wins and losses.

I’ve rooted for the Bills through many seasons past that you probably never even heard of (how many here actually remember the 2-win seasons of the late 70s and mid 80s?). Not exactly a fair weather fan. But through that all, I"ve also not plunked down any of my hard-earned money on game tix or apparel, etc. Same level of support or disgust, doesn’t change from year to year.

All that said, I’ve been on this board this whole season complaining about the coaching: the pre-game prep, the in-game decisions, the in-game adjustments (or lack thereof). Why on earth would I want them to keep the whole *(&^$#@ staff when that’s what I’ve been complaining about the whole time?

by thefourwinds on Jan 1, 2009 3:42 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I remember, no matter how hard I try to forget

Do you think fans were this low then? Maybe time helps heal those wounds, but it seems to me we are at an all time low. I was younger then too.

"The Bills have no playoff aspirations"

by Joe P. on Jan 1, 2009 10:11 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Do you think fans were this low then?

Good question. FIrst, except for the old AFL days, the Bills never had had a huge string of success for the fans to recall as the fans have now (the early 90s SB era – not saying the AFL days were all that great, but they were one game away from playing Green Bay in Super Bowl I instead of KC). So the disappointment was par for the course. The Chuck Knox era was sort of a blip on the radar, and never resulted in any playoff wins (as I recall, maybe they won one during that time).

Now, though, much of the fan base became fans during the SB era, so the expectations, I think, are higher. I do recall seeing highlights of games at Rich Stadium during the mid80s where the stands were almost completely empty.

Another difference about now, though, as some people have already pointed out on Buffalo Rumblings, is the spectre of the Bills moving either to Toronto, LA, Vegas, etc. I think many people would stop buying tickets, which is really their only successful method of protest, but they’re justifiably concerned it would ultimately lead to the Bills’ departure from Buffalo.

What talent through the draft

Leodis McKelvin will be great kick returner and James Hardy showed nothing.
They have not addressed the defensive line or offensive line through the draft.
Getting Marcus Stroud was a nice pluck, but he needs some help.
Tennessee lost Haynesworth and VandenBosch for the year, both Pro Bowlers. Who stepped in, a rookie from Eastern Michigan who had 4 sacks.
Like that ever happens watching a Bills fame. Do you see the contrast!

by BuffaloWhiner on Jan 1, 2009 8:46 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Whiner

They have addressed those needs, though. Just not always through the draft.

Peters – Undrafted Free Agent
Dockery – Free Agent
Center – leave this one open for now :-)
Brad Butler – DRAFTED
Langston Walker – Free Agent

Schobel – DRAFTED
Williams – DRAFTED
Stroud – Trade last year!!!
Kelsay – DRAFTED

by MattRichWarren on Jan 1, 2009 10:13 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

schobel and kelsay were not drafted while jauron has been here.

by buffaloboy90 on Jan 1, 2009 7:34 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I didn't say that this administration drafted them.

Why would they replace players who have played well in the past (Schobel and Peters)? Even Kelsay has played acceptably. I’m not saying he’s Bruce Smith of even Phil Hansen but he has certainly played to starter level.

My point has been that they addressed the needs they had.

Tennessee has had the same coach for 15 or so years. They can build depth because they aren’t constantly overturning the roster and scheme. We have needs to address while addressing depth. This year, we have less needs than the year before. It’s how you build the team.

by MattRichWarren on Jan 1, 2009 10:17 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

uhhh no...

What so we are fairweather fans because we don’t agree with you that the decision to bring back Jauron was horrible? How can anyone here be a fairweather fan with this team when the haven’t made the playoffs in 9 years and still comments here. The fair weather fans don’t even bother talking about the team right now when we have been an embarrassment for a decade.

Don't forget to pay the troll toll...

This site is BY FAR the best sports blogging site I have ever had the priviledge of joining. I am constantly impressed with the football knowledge and variety of opinions expressed here. Ron from NM (beautiful country there) literally invented a way to evaluate line play. Most impressive. (I’ve read about “metrics” on other sites but never seen how that system operates) Brian does an outstanding job of moderating and keeping things sane. The different perspectives brought to this board are stimulating to me. What I like best, though, is the ability to express an opinion without getting punked. When I get criticized I consider it another learning experience. I sure have seen fair weather fans elsewhere but not here.

Oh, BuffaloBoy...

When is the last time we had fair weather? 1999, to be exact. And I’m still here, as is everyone else still writing and watching.

What team are you watching? Yes, some of the players are high character, some even talented, but a good many have been duds. Forgetting about his on-the-field coaching gaffes for a moment, Jauron hasn’t even excelled at personnel decisions.

How might you be related to Dick Jauron?

This season has been the worst feeling ever provided by our Bills...a feeling of humiliation. Starting out 5-1 and finishing in last place has been a very cruel tease.

Again, wanting Dick Jauron does NOT make a fan fair-weather.

What is your definition of fairweather?

Here’s one definition of the term:

Present and dependable only in good times

Jeez, are we in the midst of some good times and I’m missing out here? Fairweather is hardly a way to describe Bills fan.

Wanting the coach fired has nothing to do with being fairweather, as Brian says below. Watching him really stink if up on the sidelines every week is why he should be fired. Some of us didn’t like the hire to start with and have been calling for his head for a long time now, not just the past 2 months. Guess we’re bad fans.

I never once said anyone was fair weather for not liking the Bills. My post specifically talked about Dick Jauron.

by buffaloboy90 on Jan 1, 2009 7:38 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And many of us have pointed out how we have complained about the substandard coaching this entire season (many were making these complaints LAST year, as well, before I was on this board).

by thefourwinds on Jan 1, 2009 7:44 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not fair weather

Something that does need to be addressed though is that Ralph gave Jauron an extension in Week 6. And why wouldn’t he? Hardly any coach is a “lame duck” with no contract beyond the season, and after a 5-1 start it was a no brainer. Had he not given Jauron that extension though, it makes you wonder if the decision to keep him would have been as easy?

No Pass rush still

Matt,
I don’t have a problem with Schobel, but the other side has not generated enough pressure. I don’t think Kelsey or Denney are earning their pay. Kelsey has had one good season when he had 6 sacks several years ago. Plus, besides Stroud, Kyle Williams and Spencer Johnson in my opinion, are hardly interior forces.
Personally, if the Bills draft a Mauluaga, put POZ on the outside with Mitchell, I would like to see them blitz like the Steelers do.

As for the draft in 2006, still wish Bills would have taken Ngata over Whitner. McCargo was drafted that year as well. Last two drafts have been better, but curious to see how Ellis pans out and Hardy.
