Something a little different

O.K. fellas, everyone is a little on edge (not that I blame anyone), so I'm doing something to get all of our minds on something a little different. This is what I've seen refered to as a "community building exercise." Here is how it works: just cut and paste the list into your response, delete my answers and replace them with your own.

Age: 30

Favorite movie: Has to be The Big Lebowski

Favorite cartoon growing up: G.I. Joe (Now you know, and knowing is half the battle)

Last book you read: Pool of Radiance, (Forgotten Realms,SciFi novel) I hope that this won't be the nerdiest thing on this list.

This FanPost was written by a registered user of Buffalo Rumblings. Its views do not necessarily reflect the views of Rumblings' editorial staff, but are just as valued as our own.

hmmmmmm

Should I tell the truth?

Age: just turned the big 2-7 last week. At least I’m not 30 yet.

Favorite Movie: Probably Rocky IV or The 40 Year Old Virgin

Favorite Cartoon growing up: Either Ninja Turtles or Duck Tales, haha

Last book I read: Well, I’m currently reading that book about the early 90’s Cowboys, Boys Will Be Boys, because it’s quite funny and jarring. And the books has an awesome quote courtesy of page 84: “He (aikman) needed a play called, he needed a primary target, and he needed to know that, after eight steps and a hard cut to the right, the receiver would be in the exact spot. When all went as planned, Aikman could be brilliant. When routes were blown or the line collapsed, Aikman could be Turk Schonert.” HAHAHA, I died when I read that. Last book I finished was something called Isaac’s Storm.

Oh, and by the way – 40 Year Old Virgin qualifies as one of the hundreds of movies I find equally awesome. In fact, anything Apatow is generally terrific.

Buffalo Rumblings - all you care to know about the Buffalo Bills and more

by Brian Galliford on Dec 5, 2008 2:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely classic show. It was on ABC (I think) every morning around 7 back when I was in fourth-fifth grade (so like 13-14 years ago).

The basic premise of the show was three cats who ran a pizzeria in Tokyo but also happened to be crime fighting samaurais. Each episode would start with them in the pizzeria, then they would find out about some crime or mischief that they would need to go fight, and their pizzeria would turn into a some sort of cannon and they would get shot out of the roof to go fight crime. Absolutely incredible.

Into the Wild was good, but I wasn’t a big fan of the ending. I’m not really sure what I was expecting, since its a true story, but I didn’t do it for me for some reason.

Best smurf reference in a movie is in Donnie Darko:

Donnie: [shouts] First of all, Papa Smurf didn’t create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel’s evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn’t happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don’t even have… reproductive organs under those little, white pants. It’s just so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. You know, what’s the point of living… if you don’t have a dick?

Stross is perhaps the best Sci-Fi writer currently working

He has an amazing ability to write about a wide variety of subjects from the purely speculative style fiction to the hard core- this is what will happen style fiction.

Books by him I reccomend:
Glasshouse
Accelerando
Iron Sunrise
The Atrocity Archives
The Hidden Family

Those 5 books will give you a wonderful taste of his writing ability and his wide ranging group of interests for fiction. Plus it doesn’t hurt that he is a retired IT guy and I can totaly relate to him that way.

BeBop is one of the best out there

But I got caught by Neon when in college, and that was all she wrote. Kino’s is perhaps one of the best series done in Anime that explores what makes a person a person, great stuff.

Others that I have enjoyed include:
Dai Guard (salarymen fighting aliens? Sign me up!)
Rahxephon (good show, sometimes get Neon flashbacks, but alot of the same guys worked this one)
Excel Saga (if you like crazy stuff and a woman who keeps a dog for emergency food but never gets around to eating him)
Ergo Proxy
Macross/Robotech (Robotech was the first series I watched religiously, and I got my oldest bro to thank for that, have since expanded into the original Macross stuff from Japan)

Whoa, I may be the biggest Nerd here excepting Brian!

Meet the West Coast College kid

Age: 18

Favorite movie: tough call. Pulp Fiction, Princess Mononoke, Star Wars (all three of the original trilogy) and City of God are all up there

Favorite cartoon growing up: I loved TMNT and the X-men, but in the end it’s no contest. My first words were “Thundercats Thundercats Thundercats HO!”

Last book read: The Republic. If we don’t count school reading then it’s The Truth by Terry Pratchett.

Anime: favorite movie is listed above. last movie seen is actually also Princess Mononoke (I couldn’t let my friend leave without having seen any Miyazaki) Last series watched is Big O. favorite series is probably Evangelion.
For the extra nerd points, my favorite manga is HunterxHunter.

A man after my own heart:

My first words were "Thundercats Thundercats Thundercats HO!"

Did you catch the recent Family Guy episode that had Mum Ra in it? I damn near fell off the couch when i saw it

There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?

The Truth is some good Pratchett

Also, the Republic is a fine read, especially for school work. I read it 9 years ago now for one of Classical Greek Civ classes. One of the greatest moments in class came while discussing the ring of invisbility. We had a kid in my Ancient Philosophy class who liked to ask WAY to many questions and gave really bad examples while trying to explain himself. One of the classics is brought back for your reading leisure.

Teacher- Okay, so what is Plato/Aristotle saying here when he discusses what happens to a good man, when he has the use of a ring that makes him invisible? Is he saying that all good man are bad as well, or that our morality is all subjective?

Kid- Oh oh oh oh oh, so, like, what, I mean, like if I had a ring of invisibility and I put it on….

My Buddy Nima- Then no one could smack your fat ass for not shutting up.

Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....

Is anyone's favorite movie

Buffalo 66?

I have yet to see it, but many people have said I should.

Sweet home Orchard Park.

I’ve seen it. It has it’s moments. Bills fans with a sense of humor will enjoy it.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

Late to the party, but here you go

Age – Old enough to know better, but young enough to do it anyway!!!!

Movie – A Time to Kill, Apocalypse Now, Blazing Saddles

Cartoon – Battle of the Planets – I bet I am the only one who got up at 6am on a Saturday to watch it. It came on after the farm report.

Book – I am currently re-reading the "Mutiny on the Bounty" but will read the trilogy straight through. Tia-Pan by James Clavell is also one of my favorites. Truly classics.

by Joe P. on Dec 6, 2008 9:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I may not remember what time it was on, but I definitely watched Battle of the Planets. Good Call.

Chicks would dig the G-Force jet

over Battle Cat any day. Besides, who scoops his poop? No way to look cool cleaning up a giant steamy pile of cat crap!

by Joe P. on Dec 6, 2008 11:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree about cleaning up after the cat, but as a Prince I always figured Adam made Man At Arms do that

But, here is another series I watched as a kid alot:
Gummie Bears
Anyone else remeber this show?
“Okey Dokey Dukey”

Mel Brooks is great regardless of which movie it is.

Barely apropos of anything, but my brother goes to art school and had to insert a political figure into something, and came with Obama as the sheriff of Rock Ridge- linky

Might as well brag about the one with talent in the family, haha.

Something

Favorite movie: Slither. Stars James Caan as an ex-con and Sallie Kellerman as a psychotic speed freak. Very funny.

Favorite cartoon as a kid: Fractured Fairy Tales. I caught it at friends because my dad refused to buy a TV. He claimed TV ruined your eyes, though he never cited a source.

Book I read recently: “A Gathering of Saints: A true story of murder, mayhem and deceit” Robert Lindsey.
I’ve read it at least four times. Well written account of the Morman bombing/forgery scandal c. 1980. Good background to view the LDS funding of Prop 8 in California this year.

I almost mentioned the Simpsons, but I was already in college when it came out. I spent all my grad school years watching Simpsons reruns in syndication and new episodes (on either Thursday or Sunday evening, depening on the season).

Last book you read: for school: A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn

i just started Hell’s Angels by Hunter S. Thompson and just finished The Brothers Bulger by Howie Carr. I recently read Rob Ray’s book, Rayzor’s Edge which has some good stories in it, but the writing is just atrocious. I also really want to read the new Jim Norton book.

Age: 29

Favorite Movie: Comedy: Men At Work || War: Black Hawk Down || Drama: Dan in Real Life

Favorite cartoon: Gummy Bears

Last Book I read: Days of Infamy by Newt Gingrich / William Forschen

Recommend: Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse by Jared Diamond. Gives great perspective on where we are and where we’re going as far as human civilization.

Also recommend Steven Ambrose history books – all great reads.

I just read what I wrote and now I feel like I’m 60.

Thinking about anything but the Bills is good

Age: 36

Favorite movie: Dumb and Dumber Harry: So you got fired again, eh?
Lloyd: Oh yeah. They always freak out when you leave the scene of an accident, ya’ know? Harry: Yeah, well, I lost my job too. Lloyd: Man, you are one pathetic loser. No offense. Harry: No, none taken. You know what really chaps my a** though? I spent my life savings turning my van into a dog. The alarm alone cost me two hundred.
Lloyd: Hey, chicks love it. Its the shaggin’ wagon.

Serious movies have to be Schindler’s List, Glory and Braveheart

Favorite cartoon growing up: Star Blazers (anybody else remember it?) Though I am still growing up and pretty immature I now love SpongeBob, Simpsons and King of the Hill.
Last book you read: The Bible, Wild at Heart. Captain Underpants with my kids. Kids are a joy and I can never get too down about anything with them around.

Star Blazers

"We’re off to outer space
We’re leaving Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers

Searching for a distant star
Heading off to Iscandar
Leaving all we love behind
Who knows what danger we’ll find?

We must be strong and brave
Our home we’ve got to save
If we don’t in just one year
Mother Earth will disappear

Fighting with the Gamilons
We won’t stop until we’ve won
Then we’ll return and when we arrive
The Earth will survive
With our Star Blazers"
