I know DE has been one of the hottest topics here, so I'd like to continue discussing it until everyone's eyes, ears and fingers start bleeding.
Anyways, money has been a big issue regarding potentially bringing in another DE. I am one of a handful who thinks DE at #11 would be the best option for us (Derrick Harvey). Others have rebutted that we don't need to add another big time contract at that position. Well, I'd like to counter that argument with a little number crunching...
In 2007 we saw:
#9 pick Ted Ginn Jr sign a 5 yr $19.6M deal
#10 pick Amobi Okoye sign a 6 yr $15.4M deal
#11 pick Patrick Willis sign a 5 yr $16.655M deal
#12 pick Marshawn Lynch sign a 6 yr $18.935M contract
I wouldn't exactly say that the contract we'd be giving our #11 DE would be breaking the bank in anyway. Using last year's 9-12 picks as a guide, bringing in a DE at #11 would make him our 3rd highest paid (per season) DE, just ahead of Denney. At $3-4M per season, I don't think the pick would have that huge of a financial impact like so many believe. We truly need that pass rushing threat off the edge and if it takes the #11 picks, so be it. It sure wouldn't be a big issue financially.
By the way, what was Amobi Okoye thinking? That's a pretty terrible deal he signed compared to everyone around him.
