Latest on Shaun Rogers

From Pro Football Weekly:

Don't lock Rogers in with trade to Broncos -- yet

Feb. 27, 2008

Although the Broncos are among the DT-needy teams that have contacted the Lions about a trade for Shaun Rogers, don't expect a deal to happen in the next couple of days as many media outlets are reporting. We hear the Lions suddenly have found themselves in the catbird seat, discovering a healthy market for their defensive tackle. Although they are almost certain to part with him -- we hear the team thinks he'll never reach his full potential in Detroit -- they'll be content to sit back and let teams up the ante. The Lions will shoot for getting a second-round pick in return but may accept a high third-rounder, something in the first 75 picks, for Rogers, we hear. The irony of the situation is that team president Matt Millen probably would prefer to keep Rogers -- Millen drafted him, and the two get along -- but the relationship between Rogers and head coach Rod Marinelli is so broken down that it's clear that Rogers has played his final snap as a Lion. There is a bit of urgency to do a deal by this weekend, considering that Rogers is due a $1 million roster bonus on Saturday, but it's possible that the team may pay the bonus if the right deal isn't available to them yet and then wait for a better offer.

The article
says the Lions would be happy with a 2nd or high 3rd rounder. Considering the interest level, most likely someone will up the ante to a 2nd. Considering that we have so many picks, sacrificing a 2nd for a dominant DT is fine by me. McCargo would develop into a beast playing next to Rogers. Anyone think the Lions would be willing to trade for a packaged bundle of lower picks? I'll assume not unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Well
I think a 2nd is ridiculous for a guy with weight issues and a questionable drive. Even a 3rd is pushing it, but since we have two, I'd be fine with it.

All indications point to the Lions getting rid of him by March 2nd as he's due a $1M roster bonus....I'm sure they'd take a 3rd or 4th if that's the best offer....

Agreed
The draft is deep at DT, and while Rogers is better than most, given his baggage, he's not better than all. I would rather use a 2nd rounder on a DT than trade it for Rogers.

Tricky
I mean, an NFL ready DT is easily worth a 2nd round pick, however the weight issues and lack of motivation are red flags.  I hate to see him sneak away from us.  The factors to consider are A)would Rogers hate Buffalo B) Does he like Jauron and C) Can Jauron keep him motivated?

I mean, its a tough decision and that is why I can see your argument for not giving up more than a 3rd.  To give up a 2nd is a lot, considering the late 1st early 2nd round would give the Bills the opportunity to nab a 4-6 rated D tackle.

Another consideration
One more thing to think about, is salary. I know Rogers isn't making a ton of money, but he's making a lot more than a 2nd rounder would be making. Which equates to less salary-cap space and that means potentially less free-agent activity.

solid points....
as for the first one, how can he truly hate Buffalo? He's lived in Detroit since coming into the league. I wouldn't exactly say that's Miami-like.

I think Jauron would be able to keep Rogers motivated, though in shape is another story.

The switching of 1st round picks has been mentioned and I like that idea.  How about that and a 4th rounder? Anyone?  The switching of 1st's is roughly equivolent to a mid 3rd. Add in the 4th's value and the packages is about a high 3rd rounder.  How much more can Detroit actually get for him?

I'd be o.k. with that
I think that would be a solid offer. Millen would be hard pressed to find a better offer elsewhere.

good thinking
It never crossed my mind to consider switching picks, but I think that would be a great idea. We'd likely have to throw in another pick but moving from pick 15 to pick 11 could be pretty enticing for Detroit, especially if the top 3 corners (Talib, Jenkins, McKelvin) they need are going off the board.

yeah
I'm ok with that, unless the Bills have someone targeted 6-10 that they want to trade up and get which I highly doubt.

I just think everyone hates Buffalo, or thats what I'm led to believe anyway.  I guess he can have all the applebees and dave & busters he wants.

I also wonder what Jauron and Millen's relationship left as?  If they left on good terms it can only help

the motivation issue
Players like Rogers typically work hard and stay motivated when things are going well.  If the Bills can win some games next year he shouldn't be a problem.  It's when you lose a few games in a row or fall out of playoff contention that causes the trouble makers to become vocal or quit on the rest of the team.

And back down....
Rotoworld is reporting that Jonathon Vilma was in Detroit taking a physical today. I have a very bad feeling that we could be seeing the start of Shaun Rogers becoming a Jet. I just heard this on BB.com
