Kris Jenkins on the Block?

From where are we going to get that DT?  Maybe Carolina?  The Charlotte Observer (http://www.charlotte.com/sports/story/513343.html) has posted that Kris Jenkins might be traded so the Panthers can avoid the $1 Mil roster bonus he's due.  He's a pro-bowl caliber tackle who can get into the backfield when healthy.  I like him as it sounds  less and less likely that we'll be getting Rogers.  Thoughts?

Don't forget
about Jacksonville's Marcus Stroud. Per PFT Still prefer McFarland, as he's a bit less of a risk.

I like Stroud but
...I am not so sure about his PED past.  I am a little nervous about the possibility of giving up valuable draft picks for a guy who could go Tony Hargrove on us.

I like McFarland, but I like the upside of Jenkins more if he can pass a physical.  After watching the Giants run up the gut, I really want to see a rotation that can get at the QB fast and consistently.  With the opposing O-Line changing its focus to the interior, that can hopefully free up Schoebel, Kelsay, and Denney more.   Adding Jenkins to the Williams and McCargo rotation could be something really nifty (yeah, I just used nifty).  Rogers would definitely be ideal, but there are too many in that sweepstakes and I fear his price is going to be driven out of our range.  I wouldn't mind giving up a second for him I suppose, but I got a feeling Modrak will.

Ultimately, I yearn for the days when we went out and got a Speilman or Paup; when we made plays for guys like the Biscuit (a little before my day but I've heard stories).  Does anybody feel will make those kind of moves again?  I hope we do it this year.

McFarland
Do you consider McFarland to be the run stuffer DT that we need (and finally, Jauron has admitted to wanting)?  I consider him to be more like McCargo and Tripplett, the nimble penetrating tackle, whereas I'm looking for a big body to replace Kyle Williams on most downs.  I know everyone is down on Tripplett, but he makes for a decent 3rd tackle and his salary is not all that out of line considering what tackles make on the open market these days.  I expect McCargo to win his starting job next season and Tripplett will make for a valuable contributor as he was with the Colts.  In my opinion, it's Kyle Williams' starting spot that screams for the upgrade and I'm not sure McFarland covers it.

i agree
here's a question that I would really like answered. I agree that Kyle Williams needs to be upgraded. Is there a reason the Bills haven't considered throwing him into a potential trade for a guy like Rogers? Williams is certainly not a bad player. McCargo, Tripplet, and Rogers wouldn't need Williams around. So why not?

His role in Tampa
Was as the one gap guy, letting Sapp be the dominant DT as the three gap guy.  In his heyday, he's perfect for the Tampa 2 defense.  I just think he's finished as a player.

And please, don't mention Booger McFarland as being nimble.  Even he would laugh if he heard someone called him nimble.

Three Gap?
A defensive tackle that can control or occupy three gaps in the line would be one helluva defensive tackle.

Three-technique defensive tackles are typically only responsible for one gap in the line.

In general, defensive tackles are usually classified as either one-technique, two-gap run defenders or three-technique, one-gap penetrators.  Shaun Rogers excells at both.  That is unique and that is rare.

Which position did McFarland and Sapp play in Tampa Bay's defense?  Did they alternate positions?  I have no clue.

No, I do not believe that McFarland will help solve the Bills' weakness at defensive tackle.

How good do you want the Bills to be?

Stroud quotes from Chris Harris
of Big Cat Country.
Recovering from surgery during the off-season and then a late season hammy.

He's more of a sure thing than some of the other DT's that are out there.

(On why he's being traded) Contract perhaps, he's owed a bunch of money. I think the idea is for nobody to bite on the trade so the team has leverage. 5 mil this season, 5.5 next year, 6 the year after.

Get me one of the 3
Jenkins, Stroud or McFarland, and I'll be happy.

The first 2 are probably going to cost a 2nd or 3rd round pick, I'd guess. McFarland is a FA, but is older than the others.

We gotta get one of these available DT's though...

Exactly....
K, once again you are dead on we NEED to get one of these guys, that would help us so much and open up the options in the draft without Having to reach for a DT.

I would lke
to get any of those three. But in all reality we haven't been a player in many of these talks. Do you think they will be aggressive towards the wrong player??
I am a huge Bills fan! Have been since I was 5! I miss the good old days with Marv, Bruce, Talley, Ballard, Hull, Reed, Lofton and Thurman!

that's what scares me....
knowing how this teams has operated the last few years, they'll probably throw something like a 5-year, $25 million deal to a guy like Wilford that has never been a starter in the league, but is unwilling to give up a 2nd round pick for a pro-bowl caliber DT that has a base salary of $4.5 million in '08.
