Sullivan's article

This is completely inspired by the recent Jerry Sullivan article in the Buffalo News and I would like to hear some opinions of my peers in an open forum.

As typical football fans we're devoted to our team and its players.  So I can speak for myself when I say I quickly dismissed Stroud's suspenson last season for banned substances and took him on his word that "It was an over the counter subststance." But after watching the baseball issues with "Banned Substances" unfold it's become apparent all athletes have become more desperate to gain an advantage on the field.

Whether it's to increase strength and speed with steroids or to overcome the adverse effects of serious injuries or surgeries with HGH, it has become a wild card in player performance that makes it more difficult to qualify a player's true level of ability.  But this much is sure, with growing attention the media and legal system have dedicated to MLB there will definitely be a carry over effect to other professional sports.

So this brings a few questions to mind when taking another look at  Buffalo's decision to trade 3rd and 5th round picks to Jacksonville for the former Pro-Bowl defensive tackle. First, why would Jacksonville be willing to depart with such a "quality" player for such moderate compensation when they have a relatively young team as well, and made a deep run into the playoffs?  Second, was John Henderson's presence a major catalyst for Stroud's success, and will Stroud struggle to compete at the same level without such luxury in Buffalo? And lastly, as mentioned in Sullivan's article, will he go "Anthony Hargrove" on the Bills and do it again if he can't perform up to his or the team's expectations.  In the case of Anthony Hargrove and even our beloved Bruce Smith(how he avoided a negative was a little convenient) those violations were recreational drug use and didn't really translate to player performance.
With Stoud's violation eyebrows should be raised because at almost 30 he is what should be considered a player approaching the age where a player's performance begins to decline, especially considering the wear and tear linemen endure. I consider his situation different than that of Shawn Merriman who was younger and probably more ignorant than desperate. Also, his contract is not reflective of advertised ability.  There's no doubt he may have something "left in the tank", but it may be all unleaded because super will blow a gasket.  Personally I'm concerned that Stroud contributions to our team may go one of two ways.:

  1.  He will be a more restricted player because of his injury and because we have no one who "measures up" to "Big" John Henderson with McCargo, Williams, and Johnson as his linemates.
  2.  He will succumb to the pressure of gaining that advantage he looked for when he most likely took HGH to recover from his ankle injury/surgery, and will receive a serious punishment from the NFL for being a second time offender.
I'm not sure exactly how the suspension system works because, quite frankly, I have better things to do than learn what overpaid athletes have to suffer for choosing to cheat and/or take drugs. I'm more concerned about drunk drivers than athletes who take performance enhancing drugs but I really enjoy watching the Bills and I like to see them do well.  I'd rather lose because we tried hard and came up short than to struggle because we gave up draft picks for a guy who doesn't play due to suspensions  or who doesn't play well because he can't cheat anymore.

Don't get me wrong everybody.
I hope Stroud learned from his mistake like everyone has to in life.  There is, however, a little bit of concern that Buffalo may not be getting what they bargained for.

The bargain
Whatever that is, other teams will have to respect it, and strategize for it, thusly opening up things for the rest of D. Not to mention, I think McCargo might just be worth that 1st round pick and has a great chance to prove his worth next to Stroud (unfortunately people will say his success comes with his new neighbor, but success is success).
The Bills can win every game

McCargo showed good signs
I hope he steps up his game another level, too.  He did a great job of penetrating the backfield on a lot of run plays and maybe he can improve his pass rushing skills with a hopefully Stroud attracting some attention. Kyle Williams showed some signs too but i think those two just got worn out and were undersized/inexperienced to be really effective.

Good read
Nice article, jj24. Your concerns are probably well-founded, but I'm willing to give the new guy the benefit of the doubt for the time being. He got a clean bill of health from the Bills' (award-winning) medical staff, and he was very up-front and honest about the situation with the Buffalo media at his introductory press conference. He's an excellent player void of issues until proven otherwise, in my book.

Do we know?
He never really said what he took. Nor, do we know what the banned substance involved is.

Then again
neither did our "Governer" admit actually to what he did, he was the Attorney General before becoming the Gov and had "Whitehouse" written all over him, how do we make players accountable when we can't even hold elected officials accountable, admittedly, the difference in salary is substantial.  Nonetheless, how do you put your kid(s) to sleep with that.  I don't even get it.  Yet there are basically losers out there, that don't even give a "#$^%".  There is something wrong, and to quote Bill Murray "something is very wrong here, very, very, very wrong here".  Anyway, back to my point, the Bills, never, ever do what anyone or anybody expects them to do, therefore, even trying to mock them is useless.  It is fun, but futile.

Lyndon Johnson probably
Helped plot Kennedy's assassination.  I think we're way past trying to clean up politics.

Kevin Bacon
I guess you could say Joe Pesci was "Makin Bacon". Can you think of anyone else in the world that's named after a cut of meat.  "Footloose 2 starring...Johnny Porkchop!"

I'll
take his word for it. Players in the NFL know exactly when they are being tested and what they are being tested for. If you still get caught, you are plain stupid (see Shawn Merriman). I'm sure whatever he took was recommended by a trainer and there was something in it that they weren't expecting, blah blah blah. As far as his ability to improve our defense... of course he benefited from John Henderson, but that doesn't mean his talent is not evident. He will now be OUR John Henderson eating the double teams and watch John McCargo burst onto the scene. Then when McCargo becomes a free agent (hopefully he won't) everybody will say he benefited from Marcus Stroud. yadda yadda yadda... yackity schmack

I think
Stroud's ankle injury was pretty bad.  I bet he took HGH in an attempt to recover quickly.  You can't really test for HGH so he didn't fail a drug test.  The league likely got word of him buying the HGH and were able to prove it enough to suspend him.  Unless he sustains another serious injury, I don't think he is a risk to get another suspension.  HGH doesn't actually make you stronger or faster so there is no reason to use it except as a recovery aid.

The fact that Jacksonville traded him doesn't make me think any less of Stroud.  Good players get traded all the time.  DeAngelo Hall is a 24 year old, All Pro CB and he is about to get dealt.  Jonathan Vilma just got traded.  The Bills traded McGahee last year and there was nothing wrong with him except for the fact that he didn't like it here.  I think the Stroud trade is a win-win deal.

i hope you are right
All those players you mentioned kind of seem like trouble to me. Vilma had injury problems and then fell out of favor in the Jets new 3-4, and lord knows Atlanta needed to clean up some chemistry issues on their team after last season.  Wasn't that Hall who got ejected from from a game during WARM UPS against the Eagles.  And McGahee publicly says the team should move while playing for Buffalo, a blue-collar football-loving town.  Again, I hope Stroud plays well and doesn't suggest to the media we move the team to Canada.
