Other Mock Draft

I was told about a mock draft site that I believe prides itself on accuracy.  The site, http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com, lists mocks since 2003.  The site's draft coverage, done by Al Fronczak, also ranks prospects by position.  I found it interesting to see how his mock picks faired over the last four years, complete with predicted draft day trades.

Interestingly, he has the Bills trading down with Detroit (claiming Millen's relationship with Jauron as a possibility for the trade) and selecting Michigan State's WR Devin Thomas as a player with gamebreaking ability.  He also has Thomas ranked as his top WR prospect.

I haven't really seen much footage on Thomas, however, I have seen the youtube highlight vids of Kelly and Sweed.  I guess I may check out Thomas now, even though apparently Geronimo notes that Kelly is the Bills top rated WR.  On a lighter note, does anyone find it interesting that the Bills are most interested in players with the last names of Thomas or Kelly....and we already have a Reed.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I would love that scenario
I am high on Thomas for his physical play and ability to break off long gains after the catch on the short to intermediate routes that the Bills will be running.  To be able to trade down and get the best fit for our team would be a great start to the draft.

Who is this Geronimo
and where does he claim he knows the Bills board and what source does he attribute?

Geronimo
Someone who evidently has inside information on the Bills.  This person posts infrequent, but often accurate, information.
How good do you want the Bills to be?

Level of competition
Like I've said with centers, I don't follow college football closely enough to gauge the talent level of college players--particularly as it relates to what kind of competition they face. Whether or not Thomas' YAC will hold true at the NFL level is an open question. Does someone who follows college football (and Thomas' team in particular) have any information about what kind of DBs Thomas faced week in and week out? Long runs against chumps could turn into short gainers against NFL DBs...

Here's a sample from last year
Devin Thomas:

9/29 @ Wisconsin (Jack Ikegwuonu) - 4 rec. 111 yards, TD
10/13 Indiana (Tracy Porter) - 13 rec. 148 yards, TD
10/20 @ Ohio State (Malcolm Jenkins) - 4 rec. 77 yards
10/27 @ Iowa (Charles Godfrey) - 9 rec. 139 yards
11/17 Penn State (Justin King) - 7 rec. 139 yards, 3TD

He also had big games against UAB, Bowling Green and Purdue, but I left those out because I doubt he faced NFL caliber DB's in those games.

I listed the teams with CB's who will be drafted pretty high this year (Jenkins in '09).  The only problem is I have no idea how often Thomas was covered by these guys, so this type of analysis is somewhat useless.

In the Wisconsin game...
...80 of those yards (and the TD) came on one play. That means that for the rest of the game, Ikegwuonu shut him down.  And it's a pretty safe bet it was Ikegwuonu because he was always assigned to the top receiver on the field.

If you think Ikegwuonu is going to be an elite corner, those numbers aren't too bad.  Personally, I think Ikegwuonu will be a decent corner, but he'll never be a star.  Thomas may have just had an otherwise subpar game with one great play -- that one game isn't really enough to judge him on.  But if he's really going to be a star, he ought to be able to do significantly better than that more often than not.

Thomas = One Year Wonder
One good year in college does not make you a FIRST ROUND talent. I think we are going with Kelly and we are just interviewing these othe guys to keep everyone else in the draft on their toes. (I really think they would LOVE to trade down.) Thomas doesn't have great hands and he doesn't run great routes. It will take around 2 or 3 years before we start to see something out of him. Sweed on the other hand has STARTED all 4 years and he has won a national championship! What seems to be the problem??? Sweed is the right guy at 11. He is an extremely hard worker and he loves going up and getting the ball. HELLO??? Is this not what we NEED???

THE NEED IS SWEED!!!!
DO THE RIGHT THING OBD!!

I am a huge Bills fan! Have been since I was 5! I miss the good old days with Marv, Bruce, Talley, Ballard, Hull, Reed, Lofton and Thurman!
