Kelly, Sweed or Thomas

I know that this has been a huge debate over the past several months and I have nothing new to argue about either three of them. I just spent the last half hour looking at random videos of all three and have come to one conclusion.

If all three are healthy and we picked any of them with our 11th pick, I would not be disappointed.

People say rookie WR don't contribute, I think it is a product of who they are lining up with. You are telling me that with Lynch in the backfield, Roscoe or Reed in the slot and Evans on the opposite side that any of the top three WR is not going to put up decent numbers (like I said before... if they are healthy).

This post is not for ney-sayers... I want to hear peoples excitement for selecting either one of these guys. I personally think if we don't take one at 11, we will do what ever it takes to move back up and grab a top 3 WR.

Right on!
Good to hear from you, hilliarddavid. I'm with you on this one (though I'm still a little down on Sweed) - Kelly or Thomas would be instant-impact rookies in Buffalo. I'm jacked up to see what either guy could do in their rookie season in Buffalo.

I agree
I would take Thomas or Kelly before Sweed.

Just curious
Are you down on Sweed because the Bills are apparently down on Sweed, or for some other reason(s)?

I was just wondering, because I don't like Sweed either.  However, I'll admit that I don't have any legitimate reasons to support it, either.

How good do you want the Bills to be?

I can't wait
Derrick Harvey is going to look good in a Bills uni.

Oh wait, this is a WR at #11 thread.  OK, I'll concede. I don't care which of the 3 we get, as long as they turn into a quality starter for us and help take some attention away from Evans.  I hope all 3 develop into stud WR's, so the chance we drafted the dud would be gone.

I'm a little miffed by everyone's opinion of Sweed. I think he's going to be a very good player and has much better game speed than track speed. I love his YAC potential and ability to go up and get the ball. Of the 3, I think Kelly is the weakest in picking up yards after the catch, but he seems to have the best hands.  It's going to be a tough call and at this point it's hard to choose the wrong one assuming Kelly is 100%.

Hands
Purely in terms of hands, Malcolm Kelly is the best at catching the ball.  Hands down.

Sweed
I believe uses his body in traffic the best.  DT can juke you, but Sweed can break tackles.  I think that's what we need most so that's why I like him best.

Sweed or Kelly........................
Thomas had one good year! Kelly has awesome hands, a huge frame and goes up to pluck the ball from the air. I like Sweed a lot. He has great game speed and he makes big plays when the game is on the line. Did I mention he won the national championship?? Sweed and Kelly are NFL ready and they will be the immediate impact we are looking for. Either one makes me happy!
I am a huge Bills fan! Have been since I was 5! I miss the good old days with Marv, Bruce, Talley, Ballard, Hull, Reed, Lofton and Thurman!

sweed or kelly
I've been hooked on the texas WR lately. Andre Johnson, Roy Williams. They have established pretty quickly and still are making huge contributions. Not sold on Thomas yet and I havent really seen what kelly can do after the catch.

Won't disagree
but FYI, Andre Johnson is a Miami (FL) guy. I can't think of another receiver to come out of Texas than Roy for some reason... there must have been others, right?

Sweed
I would love Sweed in Buffalo. My only thing is when watching the highlight videos, he just does not look as fluid and smooth in his route running and catching as Thomas and Kelly. But he is great in traffic .

Who is ready now?
From what I've read, Sweed is viewed as the most polished WR of the three. If that's indeed the case (and I'm not saying it is) then he'd be more likely than the others to have the instant impact that Buffalo needs. Edwards needs someone to throw to now. As a UT grad, he's kind of my sentimental choice.

Kelly reportedly has the most upside. Over the long haul that might make him the best choice. However, his potential has to be weighed against his injury history. I read that he had a torn ACL in high school but I don't have the faintest idea if that makes it more or less likely that he'd have the same kind of injury again. Speaking as a guy who owns most of the grip strength toys in the Ironmind catalog (and who rolls a pair of 8 pound shots in rather small hands) I love Kelly's hand strength.

Thomas I know little about other than he had one really good year. Well, in the NFL teams are wary of guys who put up big numbers in their contract years. Shouldn't the same hold true in this case? Again, I'm not saying that he's a one year wonder but rather that the team should look deeper into his history and why he didn't produce earlier in his collegiate career.

For one thing, he went the JUCO route, so he was only at MSU for 2 seasons. Who knows how quickly he picked up the offense when he first got there. Also, I don't know much about JUCO's, but he may not have gotten to MSU until August, like a typical freshman does (I've got no idea on that, so hopefully someone can clarify).

MSU also brought in a new coach before this past season (Mark Dantonio), who obviously brought in his offense, which better suited Thomas' skills.  It's tough to know, but maybe the prior coach just didn't utilize Thomas' abilities.

That's all I know about his situation. I wouldn't hold his one year wonder status against him.  I'd rather see that out of a player than a couple of mediocre seasons capped off with an above average final season.  Putting up the numbers he did, it's easy to see how explosive he can be, so that is very intriguing.

Finley
Ron, as a UT grad, can you tell us about Finley (TE).  I heard that he is a fantastic athlete with great potential -- but has not lived up to his physical abilities.  Could he be a steal in the 3rd round?

by labill on Apr 2, 2008 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Finley
From what I know of Finley, and this is probably not even close to what Ron will know of him, he's a great athlete at TE, but more of a WR/TE at this point.  He's got good hands, but really isn't much of a blocker. He needs to add a little weight/strength to hold up on the line, or he'll be forced to play more in a Dallas Clark role...He has very good receiving skills though.  That's my opinion of him, anyone else?

And I do like him in the 3rd or 4th round if that's where we go after a TE....

Finley
I love what I've seen from this kid.  Only problem is, I don't think the Bills will get him.  I think he won't go higher than the middle of the third, and by then, I think the Bills will have addressed their TE need.  The only way I could see him in Buffalo is if we added picks in the second or early third, and reached for him a little.

College Prospects
Labill,

I gave up trying to predict how a college player would do in the NFL after the Mike Williams debacle. I thought he was a can't-miss stud. Ooops. It dawned on me one day that Williams, while a good college player, looked better than he should have because UT played some poor teams. College teams are so uneven that it's tough to tell who will do well against the elite competition (compared to college) they will face every week in the NFL.

First round selection
Everyone is talking about what WR we should take with the 11th pick. The bills need a WR. BUT like Jaron says, the draft has a lot of good receivers. Some goods one will be there in the second round. With that said, I believe the Bills will pick the best player available when the 11th pick comes. They won't trade down because if they do the player that they have targeted will be gone. So with the 11th pick in the 2008 Draft the Buffalo Bills take D. Harvey, DE.. Hows that one guys.
