Welcome to the new Buffalo Rumblings and SB Nation
Editor's Note: Hey Rumblers! Brian Galliford here. As you can undoubtedly see, we have successfully transitioned Buffalo Rumblings to the brand new blogging platform I've been pimping for weeks, SBN 2.0. I'd like to introduce you to Trei, code name "clockwerks", who headed up a team of tech gurus who put this new platform together. Below, he explains everything that's new with the platform and how to set up your new accounts. Take it away, Trei; we'll be back to regularly scheduled posting this afternoon. Go Bills! End Note
Hey Buffalo Rumblings,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.
Before we begin, I want to let you know we still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com. We'll be continuing to make changes and improving things.
Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:
- Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
- Once you're logged in, press your Z key in any thread with new comments
- Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
- Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
- Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to Buffalo Rumblings from YouTube or images from Flickr
- Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.
- Customize display options on your Edit Settings page
What Has Changed
SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change
Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.
To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)
We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.
FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.
Visual Redesign
This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Buffalo Rumblings and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.
Search
We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.
What's New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
Buffalo Rumblings now has all the basic information about the Buffalo Bills and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Recommending FanPosts
Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.
As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of Buffalo Bills material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.
Avatars
Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.
Network Profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.
Network bar
The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.
-------
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.
This FanPost was written by a registered user of Buffalo Rumblings. Its views do not necessarily reflect the views of Rumblings' editorial staff, but are just as valued as our own.

Great work
Great work Brian et al. New site looks good, and the transfer was shockingly simple.

"shockingly simple"
may be a tagline that the gurus use in their PR push of this project. :)

Short text
My only comment so far is that there doesnt seem to be a place to start threads/diaries that are short. Say for example ‘I miss the punching cat!’. I tried Fanposts, and you needed 75 words to start a thread there. I also tried fanshots, but you can only post there with an Image URL.
Of course something that needs an image URL just screams out for a link to our pugnacious feline friend.

Sure there is
That section is called “FanShots”, and it’s located directly below FanPosts in the right sidebar. FanPosts are essentially blog posts, whereas FanShots is a place for you to post links to videos, articles, chats, or just short little blurbs about the Bills.
Trei covers FanShots above in this intro post. It’s one of my favorite new features, and one I suggest you check out (especially if you can find a picture of that cat! :) )

I must say
as far as ads go I think I would prefer the cat to the guy in his whitey-tighties with the bulge that is there now.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

of course
now it’s Grand theft auto, so I guess thats better.

Yeah...
rotating ads are much better than three weeks of a cat punching your retinas out, if I’m speaking honestly.

hhahahahahaa
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha sireric that comment literally made me cry from laughter at work.

Short text
Hmm maybe Im just doing something wrong, but I dont think fan shots can do short text posts without an image URL.
by Thronsen on Apr 23, 2008 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There are several FanShot types: you can post Chats / Links / Quotes, etc
Note the small tabs above the FanShot editor fields, where you can switch modes. I think we’ll need to add a “Thought” or “Shout” category to these for folks who want to post something quick, but without a link.

The Borg!
Hey Sixfoot6-
I gotta say, Im amazed at just how easy this transition was. I was expecting a nightmare, given what I had seen other sites try to force.
This really has to be the most seamless major transition of a website I have ever seen.
Of course Im over 30, so what do I know. But seriously I came in thinking 50/50 I miss seeing the draft with Rumblings.
I appreciate the need for a serious (75 words or more) post section. But I also think a short text section, call it banter or whatever is good. Its not really a discuss football with lots of stats thing. Its a community thing, for shout outs, news updates, and finding the punching cat.
by Thronsen on Apr 23, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ooh, "banter"! I like that.
Trei and I were just discussing the need for a banter (or whatever) section this morning. We’re not sure if it belongs with FanShots – but either way it’s something we definitely want to get to in the next few months. Much to do in the meantime on other new features.
Glad the transition went well for you here. We took our time with the first few SB Nation 2.0 blogs (especially Athletics Nation) to refine the transition proces, fix bugs, and change the user sign up experience. It’s paid off, and we’re able to transition 10 blogs a night now, suffering only lack of sleep ;)

But as always with technology, I will reserve my final thoughts once all the kinks have been worked out. Thanks for teaching me that Microsquash.

I slept like a 5-year-old waiting for Santa last night. I’m really jacked up about this.
Like the avatar, btw. Really looking forward to that film. R.I.P., Mr. Ledger.

Great work (an a minor suggestion)
I really like the new look, and the new features too.
I suggest you to change the text colour you use with the red background – the light blue is IMHO a bit difficult to read with cleartype on (expecially on high resolution screens).
by patamunzo on Apr 23, 2008 8:14 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Good call
That’s something that’s been bothering me as well, and I’d considered making the change. I just don’t know what color to change it to. Any suggestions?
by Brian Galliford on Apr 23, 2008 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That might be hard to read
Royal blue on red doesn’t promote easy reading. I’ve put in a color request to the tech guys to make the links the only other color the Bills employ – white. I’m guessing that will look better.
by Brian Galliford on Apr 23, 2008 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brian - nice job!
And that goes to the guys that you worked with from SB Nation as well. It’s taking me a little time to get used to the new format, but already I can tell I really like the new features.
One question – when you hit “C” to scroll down to the new entry, I notice that the background is highlighted, and I like that. But, can you make the contrast a little darker, or is that something I do on my end? I hope I’m explaining this correctly.
All in all, I really do like it so far.
By the way – what is your (and sirerics) avatar? I can’t tell…
by krytime on Apr 23, 2008 9:51 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Answers to your questions
No credit should go to me here – this was ALL Trei and the tech guys. Their genius makes me giddy.
I get what you’re saying about the highlight, but that’s not something that you or I can control. Hopefully one of the tech guys can talk to you about that. I never use “C” to scroll, by the way – I’m a “Z” guy. :)
My avatar is Boba Fett, the splendiferous bounty hunter from Star Wars. Sireric’s is Cobra Commander from GI Joe. We’re working on getting Kurupt and Jri111 some nice avatars as well…
by Brian Galliford on Apr 23, 2008 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you notice
Click the user names, which are highlighted blue and you can get a close-up.
What the heck is yours by the way?

My avatar comes from the eighties..
Back in the time when the Steel Industry went down the tubes (late 70’s), The City of Buffalo was going through some real tough times, image wise. The city came up with a marketing idea to make us all feel oh so much better about ourselves. Did you ever hear the song, “Talkin’ Proud?” It was played at Bills games until the Shout song took over. The avatar I chose (for now) was the symbol used in that campaign.
If anyone can find a link to that song, that’d be great. I haven’t had any luck. I’ll probably cringe when I hear it again. But for now, the nostalgia is appealing…
by krytime on Apr 23, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
We've tried to make the highlight unobtrusive
for people who don’t care to use the keystrokes (even though Z is totally addictive). If you notice, there’s a brighter top border above new posts as well. We’re aware that the effect is hard to see on some screens, so we may change this in the future.

Thanks!
I really love the fact that videos and pics can be posted on this site now. I’m not a tech guy by any means, so I’m just trying to get the hang of some things here. Sometimes, it’s not so easy to teach an old dog…..well, anything.

Yes
I’m really, really excited about the FanShots section, and how it perfectly complements FanPosts. There have been some outstanding posts written by y’all here in the FanPosts (old diaries) section, and it’s been great content. But the links/chats/videos/pics that FanShots brings is entirely new, pretty easy to pick up on in terms of use, and brings an entirely new type of content to the blog. It’s going to be fantastic.

I didn’t think the new site would be THIS cool. Sweet stuff. I can’t wait to use the enhanced features. I got a big presentation to give today but then I’ll be putting up some informed draft info later!

For the curious
What timezone do these guys (Lovit, odacrem, Bigfoot6 etc) live in, and how many of these transitions do they do a day.
This is all pretty impressive, especially considering they pick the most convenient time for the users, and the least convenient for themselves.
by Thronsen on Apr 23, 2008 1:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
As far as I know
most of them are left coasters. And they’re working on migrating all 30ish SB Nation NFL blogs this week in preparation for the draft, so that should give you an idea as to how quickly they’re moving.
by Brian Galliford on Apr 23, 2008 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
As I mentioned up above, we're doing 10 per night at this point,
but only every other night, so we can connect with the communities and squash bugs in between.
I’m from Massachusetts, but I live in Santa Barbara. Odacrem and Lovitt are in Austin, and clockwerks is in D.C. We get great server and config help from Jon, who’s near Seattle. So we span a few timezones, which is nice, since we sort of organically balance work, sleep and overlap.
Lovitt and odacrem developed the automated migration process and run each transition one at a time starting at 1 in the morning central time. They deserve trophies for their hard work.
And I’m so changing my name to Bigfoot6.

Just Signed Up
I’ve been a Rumblings lurker for several months and find the discussion level far superior to that of other “message boards”. So with the change over to the new platform I decided to sign up and be part of it. The process was quick, easy, and painless.
Great site ! Happy to be here.

Log in question
On the old platform once I had logged in I stayed logged in even if I shut down the computer while sleeping or while (gasp!) at work. On the new platform I need to log in every time I reconnect to the Internet. Is everyone else having to do the same thing? Is there a way to stay logged in so I can forget my password again?
by Ron From NM on Apr 26, 2008 11:16 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ron, I stay logged in simply by clicking the “Remember” box in the network bar at the top of this page. That doesn’t work for you?
by Brian Galliford on Apr 26, 2008 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I tried that....
...but every time I go offline I have to log back in. Maybe it will click eventually.
by Ron From NM on Apr 26, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s an odd one. I would send an e-mail to bugreport@sbnation.com if you feel like it – the tech guys get back to you quickly and they should be able to help you out. :)

Yeah, this shouldn't be happening.
What browsers and operating systems are your two computers using? Any other info you can give us to help us understand what you’re experiencing would help. Or send an email as Brian suggested.
