What Could Happen...
Well--THE day has arrived. All the tape has been watched, interviews conducted and finally, all the speculation and rumours will be put to bed and reality will rule. Like all of you, I will be a close observer and am intensely curious as to how it all will turn out. I have a few thoughts as to what may happen over the next few days based on some informed speculation and will share with you what I am able here as the draft is about to begin. A couple things first--I have a very high degree of confidence in both Tom Modrak and Dick Jauron, and make no mistake about about it--despite Russ Brandon's public visibility, it will be Modrak and Jauron who will make the final calls today and tomorrow. They are philosophically in-tune and extremely good talent evaluators. I trust them and you should too.
The Bills Board was finished and polished up on Wednesday and the last two days at OBD have been spent playing "War Games." Going through scenario after scenario. A complete and comprehensive review of every "what if" possibility. Who will likely be selected ahead of them--what if there are surprises. Trade down possibilities, trade up possibilities. Who would be the likely trade partners. All of it. No stone left unturned. There are FAR more players on the Bills Board than will be drafted. Watch for the scurry to sign UFAs right after the draft.
Yestersday, the Bills spoke with almost every team in the league. If they didn't hear from them--they called. As of this moment, the best trade-down scenario is with the Chiefs, coming up from #17. The Eagles coming up are also a possibility. We will see if these talks amount to anything. So much depends on what happens in the top tem--particularly with the Chiefs. There will be surprises as always.
So--let's begin. I should say that I will NOT be editorializing on any of the following. That will come post-draft. Barring any last minute changes in the "assumed" top ten, and assuming a tad of good luck, if he is there (I thnk this is 40-60 against happening) and we do not trade out--I strongly strongly believe that Leodis McKelvin will be the pick at #11. He is highly rated, the Bills think he is a complete CB who can play from day one and he fills a need position.
If McKelvin is gone--the Bills will strongly consider (if available of course) WR Thomas, Rodgers-Cromartie, Derrick Harvey, and Keith Rivers. The latter may surprise you, but the Bills think he is an outstanding prospect and could make an immediate contribution. How and why they think that will have to wait for another day. DRC is viewed as the second best CB--not great against the run--but with truly outstanding ball skills and great athleticism. All the plusses and issues with Thomas have been debated ad nausuem--so I will not review them here. He is obviously liked at OBD. By far (to me anyway) the most interesting selection would be Harvey and he would be strongly considered. In the end the pick will be Thomas. Bank on it.
Obviously the rest of our draft will depend on what happens at #11. OBD is well aware of the need to surround Trent Edwards with weapons. They believe that TEs Keller and Davis can step right in, play and contribute. Carlson from ND to a lesser extent. Martellus Bennett and Finley are viewed as talented, interesting and intruguing--but raw and more project types.
Not surprisingly the WR wish list after Thomas includes Kelley, Hardy, Sweed (they have warmed up to him a bit) and Jordy Nelson. In Rosco we already have the grown-up DeSean Jackson. Of this group and the TEs --who has the potential to drop to us in the second round if we go Defense at #11? Hard to say--but OBD's interest in all that Nelson could bring to the table transcends the single knock against him--that he'd struggle making the transition from slot to wide-out. The Bills think he would have no problem. OBD doesn't really care about Kelley's 40 time...or his post workout tantrum. They are far more concerned with his knees. The character issues with Hardy are a non-issue with them. San Diego at #26, but no #2,3 or #4 I beleive really would like to move down for more picks. Could we move up to land of these WRs or TEs if we like him enough and it looks like nobody will make it to us in round #2? Possibly. Note to the friends and family of Adarius Bowman. Your boy's dope-smoking and other evil ways cost him a LOT of money. I mean a LOT. I know one team in Western NY, who positively loved you on tape. OBD sees Manningham as a 4th-5th round guy.
There is much more to talk about but little or no time or room left. CB Flowers is well thought of as is Cason. They wish he played tougher though. Jenkins is not all that well thought of.
I have NO doubt that we will see a surprise or two from OBD in the next 48 hours. One of things I like about them is that they totally resist the herd mentality of the League and actually have the courage of their convictions.
Should be fun!!! More after the Draft!!!
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Knee jerk reactions to these tidbits
I certainly don’t share the unwavering confidence in Modrak and Jauron’s talent evaluating skills, rather I see them as hit or miss, 7-9 types based on their extensive track records, but to each his own I guess…If the Bills like Devin Thomas a ton and WR is their unquestioned biggest need, they should select him with the 11th pick and shouldn’t gamble with trading down. I don’t care what Mayock and Kiper think, it’s ridiculous to risk losing a player you like a lot at a need position for the sake of an extra 3rd round pick…Why is Buffalo unconcerned with Hardy’s character issues? Domestic violence is a capital crime in my book….I’m glad to hear the Bills aren’t infatuated with Manningham or Jenkins as I share the middling opinion on them…I’m cool with taking McKelvin (albeit begrudgingly) as long as they can trade back up and nab a Sweed or Kelly late in the 1st round…if we get stuck with a middle of the pack receiver like Nelson or Caldwell I’m going to be a bitter person come tomorrow morning and it’ll seriously hinder my softball game…I’d still advise getting Sweed or Thomas in round 1, Flowers or Cason in round 2, and trading back up into the end of round 2 for a TE…I think this team has a better roster on paper than it did at the end of last season thanks to players coming back from injuries and defense acquisitions. I don’t think this team needs to be passive in this draft in an attempt to keep adding picks. Overall, I’d rather see this team trade up than down after their first selection in an attempt to get players they think can help immediately as Jauron’s career should be riding on this season…Go Bills.
Never forget 56-10. Revenge.
Modrak/Jauron
I actually REALLY like Modrak as a talent evaluator. i wish he would actually take the GM post, becuase I think he has the talent and experience to excel in that role. I understand that he doesn’t want to though, and that he loves the draft aspect of the scouting, as oppose to the pro player scouting.
Jauron is a different story. I don’t really have an opinion (or enough information) to judge him as a talent evaluator, but I don’t like him enough as a coach to really find out. Maybe he’d have a good career as a GM. As a coach, he’s out of touch and “soft.” But, I regress, this team is improving and Jauron is likely here for the long haul, so I will have ot suck it up and hope for the best. Anyways, this is draft day, so enough about that!
Big day for the Bills!

Thanks G
I think a trade down is going to happen assuming KC doesn’t take Albert/Clady at #5. I think they’ll grab Ryan/Gholston and then try to move up for the top remaining OT. At least i hope so. Glad the Bills are being so proactive in shopping the pick.
Wonder if the Bills have any TE’s they like in the middle rounds.
Any clue if the Bills would move up for a WR assuming McKelvin was picked at #11?
~K
In regards to KC, don’t be surprised if they take a certain Mr. Harvey at #5, either. I believe that they’re looking at defensive linemen there, and with Glenn Dorsey likely off the board, any of Chris Long (likely gone), Vernon Gholston (possibly gone) or Sedrick Ellis (probably not gone) could be the pick. But Harvey is the wild card.
If Ryan is available at 5… then things get real interesting. Negatively so for the Bills, because it gives the Chiefs more trade options.

Thanks!
As always thanks Geranimo!
I’m pulling for a trade down. I like McKlevin and although I’m not one of the DE lovers, i have warmed on Harvey a little(yes Sireric, that’s all you are getting out of me), but I think trading down offers better “value” for the draft as a whole. I would much rather have Thomas and and extra 3rd and 5th, then McKlevin/Harvey at 11 and then worrying about possibly having to use your 2nd and 3rd to move up to get one of the top WRs.
Also, i’m curious as to why they are interested in Rivers. The obvious speculation is that Crowell wants a lot of money and they don’t think they will be able to extend him and Evans, with Evans being the obvious priority. Some what disconcerning.

Been Lookin'...
....for your post Geronimo… I’ve felt for a while now, that the Bills are in a great position to trade down to fill our need at WR… Unless one of the top tier defenders falls to us…. Also good to hear we’re looking at Keller and Davis as good TE options…
Interesting note on Bowman… Could be a mid round “steal” if he’s learned his lesson and gotten over his dropsies of the offseason workouts…
And it begins...
PFT is reporting that the first 3 picks will be:
1. Miami-Jake Long
2. Rams-Chris Long
3. Falcons—Matt Ryan
This would seem to add fuel to some rumors about the Saints and the Ravens trading picks. After all, with Ryan off the board the Ravens can drop back and take a guy like, say, McKelvin to shore up their secondary….although PFT says they’d take Henne at #10. I’m guessing, though, that the Ravens could trade back into the end of the 1st (say with San Diego) and get him later. That scenario, of course, would make it more costly for Buffalo to trade into the back end of the 1st to pick up a WR or TE.
It should be a fun day!
ESPN
is reporting this as well. They also believe the Raiders will take McFadden.

Geronimo
Based on what you said above, would this be a doable scenario by the Bills then?
#11- trade this pick to the Chiefs along with our 3rd rounder (72) in order to get the chiefs #17 and #35 picks.
Fear the mighty helmet wearing gopher, he is coming for your soul....
Geronimo
Thanks for your input once again. Based on those comments, OBD does not want project players if they don’t have to. Bennett is surely a project. Keller or Davis would help quicker. I do like WABillsfan choices. Still don’t see Sweed in a Bills uniform. Let’s hope KC is in a trading mood.
Kelly?
Geronimo – Thanks for the insight. Are the Bills still considering Kelly at #11, or in the second round? Are their still concerns about his knees?
Yeah, he mentioned in the post that the problem with Kelly in Buffalo’s eyes is the knees. They’re OK with the workouts and the outbursts, but the knees concern them.
